We stumbled upon Free Spirit Tours when looking for a free walking tour in Zagreb and were so glad we did! Luka our guide was so excellent that after our 11 am, 2-hour free tour if Zagreb, we decided to book the 3 pm tour that same day for the paid Croatian War tour. Luka’s passion for history and personal experiences from the war really made these tours impactful, enjoyable and interesting. We truly felt they were essential for our understanding Zagreb and Croatian culture in general- so helpful for context for the rest of our Croatia trip! We learned a ton and got to see all of the major tourist sites. As an added bonus, Luka’s recommendations for food and activities were so helpful. Highly recommend!

Luka was an excellent story teller and makes history come alive. He delivers jokes at appropriate moments with a complete deadpan expression which makes for great comic relief moments throughout the tour. He's engaging, passionate and knowledgeable and it comes through in how he delivers the tour. I've learnt more than I expected to with this tour and would strongly recommend it to everyone who's even the slightest bit interested in history.

We had a brilliantly informative free tour with Luka, learning all about the history of Zagreb. The tour lasted two hours and was very engaging. We enjoyed the free tour so much that we signed ourselves up to that afternoon's war tour, for which we got a discount after having attended the free tour. The war tour was equally informative and very moving. Luka did a brilliant job of explaining Croatia's troubled recent history in an objective manner. Hvala Luka.

Free tour of Zagreb:
I have attended the free tour on 10. of July 21 with Luka about history of Zagreb.
It was nicely done. I guess we were under 20 people in a group.
Luka was always heard clearly and his English is superior.
We walked to the Gradec and after to Kaptol. During the walk Luka explained to us how the two towns were united under one city Zagreb. There was everything in his interactive presentation/tour - historical facts, legends and personal experience. I my mind this is how the tour should look like. As a bonus you will get recommendations where to eat local food and what else you can do in Zagreb.

In the end of the tour we were offered paid tour Communism & Croatian Homeland War Tour that takes place in the afternoon. Which I eagerly attended.

War tour (paid):
I met Luka in the afternoon there were I think 5 people in the group. Luka had well prepared lecture (I will call it a lecture because I learned a lot). It starts with modern history of Crotia and Yugoslavia. Basically goes through both WW and communism (60 min) to set the stage for the Croatian war for independence (60 min).
Luka gave us a top notch lecture. He has the knowledge and more importantly first hand experience with the war. It can be seen that behind this lecture is lot of research. I left the tour with more understanding about lives and struggles of Croats. If you want to understand the world around you, definitely go on this tour. It is worth the money.

Thanks for the tours.

We heard about this tour during the “regular” free walking tour and opted to take it the next day. For everyone with just a little bit of interest in history, especially the very difficult one of the wars within former Yugoslavia, this is a 100% must.

Zid was our guide for the second time and his personal passion to provide an insight of many different aspects was remarkable. He included his personal view/opinion as well as those of previous generations of his family and friends, and those are not the same but ranging from A-Z in terms of “who is guilty of this and that”. We valued especially this “two-folded” story-telling as very positive.

This tour is priced at 150 KN, but that’s definitely worth it.

We took a free walking tour with Luka and a war tour with Ivana and enjoyed both of them. Thereafter we went with Spirit tours at each city in Croatia we visited, which was all the tours offered as of today in Croatia 😀. We enjoyed all of them and highly recommend it as the first thing to do when arriving in a new city. You will get great insight about the city and history as well as food and sightseeing recommendations and will feel like home for the rest of your stay.
Big thank you to all our guides. Luka and Ivana in Zagreb, Sandra in Zadar, Silvija in Šibenik, and Andrea in Dubrovnik.

This was a good tour to provide a flavour of Tito's socialist regime and the break-up of the former Yugoslavia from Croatia's perspective. The tour guide was well informed and I was impressed at how well she held her own in a large crowd and one particularly difficult guest (who continually compared vaccine policies to communism).

Note that there are not too many actual "sights" in Zagreb related to this tour (aside from the WWII tunnels) so a lot of it is standing around in various spots as the guide talks about the history and shows photos. For this reason, the ability of the tour guide is even more important than in the typical walking tour.

The tour is simply fantastic. It allows tourists to move around the city and learn about Croatia's history and how certain key events have shaped the country. The guide, Katarina, was well informed, passionate and competent. She was extremely clear in the explanations, which sometimes involved also personal anecdotes that rendered the experience emotionally stimulating and not simply historically interesting. In conclusion, the tour offers a window on Croatia's very recent past, and allows tourist to feel, for a few hours, what that past must have felt like

The tour with Luka was amazing! He is very knowledgeable and funny. More than 2 hours passed really fast because he is explaining the history in a very interesting way. We strongly recommend this tour to everyone interested in the history of Croatia in order to understand the country and its people better! The customer service was really helpful when we tried to re-arrange our booking.

We took a free spirit free walking tour the day prior to taking their homeland war tour, and were suitably impressed. Our interest piqued, we paid to come on this tour and were both absolutely blown away. The quality of the information, the personal anecdotes relating to the subject matter and the engaging manner of our guide made this a memorable experience. We both felt completely floored by what we had learnt and how quickly the time had gone, and would go so far as to recommend this tour to anyone and everyone who visits Zagreb. The content of the tour was both informative and moving, we have learnt so much about a topic about which we sadly knew so little before taking this tour.

Worth every penny. Please, if you visit Croatia, take this tour and learn all you can about this (often covered up) part of their history. You won’t regret it.
