10/10! Learned so much about communism and Sofia!
Jul 2019 • Solo
This was a great tour. I went in the morning and was the only person. Guess it was a slow day, though Sofia also isn’t a very touristy city. The guide was very knowledgeable and answered any questions I had. He also was curious to know if there were any subject in particular that I wanted him to touch on. He explained things in a way that was interesting and easy to understand without sounding boring. It was a lot of fun riding in the trabant and seeing the city in this sort of way. As someone who didn’t know much about the communist era, once the tour was done I felt like I could teach a class about it. Would recommend this to anyone who wants to see Sofia in a different way and learn about Bulgaria’s past! It really helped me understand why certain things in Sofia are the way they are.

Great tour with friendly guide
Really enjoyed our tour with Danny. Was great to hear about Bulgaria and Sofia during the communist era and with a few more personal anecdotes thrown in. It was a fun bonus to have a short trip in the Trabi too!

It was a freezing cold day but well worth the time :)

(Tour is a pretty flat walk but some steps so not easily accessible for wheelchairs and strollers - although maybe the guides have ways around it. Not so much walking as other tours we have done in other cities.)

Highlight of our time in Sofia.
Dec 2019
The communist Trabi tour was a great experience. The tour guides were very knowledgeable and made the tour both informative and entertaining.
The tour was free with the option of a tip at the end. Start and finish locations were central and easy to navigate.
We would highly recommend this tour to anyone exploring Sofia. It is definitely worth it!

The Two-hour Communist Tour was our very first acquaintance with Sofia.   It seemed appropriate since Bulgaria had been under Communist rule for 35 years (ending in 1989) and a good way to get a handle on the subsequent thirty years to the present.

The first thing our guide Danny (who showed up even though he was somewhat under the weather) explained was the quirks of the vehicle we would use for the entire tour - the Trabant...  As for the history of that unbelievable "cotton" car just Google it, but I can say that it did much to get a taste of what life was like during Communist times in Bulgaria.

The tour itself began with a visit to the National Palace of Culture where Danny explained how this huge structure began with the suggestions of Lyudmila Zhivkova, daughter of the communist leader of the former People's Republic of Bulgaria.

We later visited the City Garden are across from the National Art Gallery.   This was the location of the Georgi Dimitrov Mausoleum, a structure used as a platform for Communist party rulers during parades and such.   As Danny somewhat humorously explained, it was built in just six days but took four attempts to demolish with high explosives in 1999.

Then we went on to the Museum of Socialist Art.   Here rests the huge red star that once adorned the top of Communist Party Headquarters and the large statue of Lenin that faced the star. (The original location of that Lenin statue is now occupied by the imposing Saint Sofia Monument) . Outside this small museum you will find a garden filled statues of Communist leaders which once peppered the city.

There is much more to this tour than I have described in this review. Don't hesitate to ask any questions!   Danny - and I'm sure the other guides -  are quite passionate and knowledge about this period of Bulgarian history.

If you are at all interested in Bulgaria's communist era, book this tour.  Danny or another knowledgeable guide will pick you up at your hotel...  This memory my wife and I have of Sofia is well worth the price.

Really enjoyed our tour. Driving in the trabant car was such fun. Our guide was incredibly knowledgeable and we really got a great sense of what it was like in Sofia during communism. He has moved here and actually has a rose plantation...lots of great stories to share with us!

The tour provide an excellent overview of what it was like to live in the Communist era, and highlights some interesting spots around the city, testimonies of the past that otherwise would lie unnoticed. The guide was friendly, fun, and very well prepared. Would totally recommend this tour

Amazing tour with amazing tour guides
We were a company of 3 who was lucky enough to take this amazing tour. Lots of information about the terms people had to live with during the communist regime.

The only negative part was saying goodbye because I wanted to keep going for 3 more hours.

We met with the guys from the Sofia Communist History tour while walking through the NDK Centre park.

They were so friendly and very passionate about sharing Sofia's history.
We even got to pose for photos in a real Trabant. What a cool experience!

Found out about this tour during a previous visit to Sofia, and was keen to join, as I was keen to have a ride in a Trabant.

The guides Evo, and Chris were fantastic. The tour was lead primarily by Evi, who we found to be very engaging, and due to the small size of the group, was happy to adapt the program, to allow us to see a couple of extra places, and was happy to point out some interesting places for us to visit ourselves.

The highlight of the tour however the ride in the Trabant, which is an experience not to be missed.
