Miguel our local guide and Alejandra our winery guide were both amazing, knowledgeable and super friendly!! We had a wonderful time and a delicious lunch with wine pairings. - L7452CKmikeb0 contributionsDo it!Great experience! They don’t just take you to big, commercial wineries. You get to see smaller or older historic wineries. Great guide/translator Miguel! He was on time, spoke multiple languages, studied the profess of wine making, and very friendly. great wine, and amazing lunch at Santa Rosa winery, over 100 years old! Beautiful cellar and dining area.Written June 24, 2024
- 163fional0 contributionsLovely vineyard and guide! It was so wonderful to spend time at Casillo Viejo, meeting the family behind the vineyard who were so lovely and made us feel so at home! Miguel was a super guide with great English and was also an excellent translator for some parts of the tour. The lunch was also amazing and so well matched with the wines. He also provided some great recommendations for what else to do in Montevideo - highly recommend!Written May 26, 2024
- Edward P0 contributionsA must do experience when visiting Montevideo!Miguel arrived right on time and we had a great drive to the wine country leaning more about Uruguay. At Castillo Viejo we were met my Raquel who gave us an in-depth history of wine making in Uruguay as well as the history of the bodega. She is extremely knowledgeable and was patient in answering all of our questions. Next we proceeded to the amazing cellar where we tasted 4 wines, with very generous pours and a gourmet lunch. Along the way we met family members who own Castillo Viejo and we were warmly welcomed by them. Overall a great experience, very relaxing and most importantly delicious food and wine. I highly recommend the experience.Written May 14, 2024
- ChrisP63480 contributionsAbsolutely Awesome Experience!!We had the most amazing time with Ryan on this trip. There were 14 of us from an Atlas cruise and everyone said it was their favorite day tour! Ryan picked us up in a very comfortable roomy van. We arrived at the winery before it opened and we had 4 different wines and an amazing meal. Lots of history of the area and Ryan knows his wine!! 🍷 most bought multiple bottles for the rest of our trip and we were dropped off right at the tender boat back to the ship!! I can’t recommend this trip enough to anyone interested in Uruguay’s premier vineyard!!Written April 16, 2024
- J7599HKjmc0 contributionsDouble your pleasure and experience Uruguay wines!Ryan arranged an excellent day to visit two very different wineries and Miguel was a wonderful guide, translator and storyteller who kept us informed and entertained. The hosts at each winery were gracious, hospitable, charming and obviously took pride in their wines. We also appreciated the peaceful country settings.Written April 12, 2024
- gjmatt260 contributionsOne of my favorite tours of our trip...a MUST DO experience!!Wow, I can't say enough about Ryan and this tour! The communication from booking to the tour day was spot on, and Ryan is one of the coolest guys you'll ever meet...so many fascinating stories! The short drive to the winery is picturesque and you'll be amazed as soon as you arrive. The grounds are beautiful, the wines are delicious, and the lunch was by far the best meal of our 2.5 week trip! We had a blast sharing this experience with new friends, and Ryan easily has a way of connecting us all. Of course we bought a bottle to enjoy later on our trip, and there's some fun surprises along the way. We toured Argentina, Uruguay, and Brazil...and this tour easily stands out as one of our favorites of the whole trip. I would highly recommend this for a fun filled day...and definitely get the lunch!! Cheers to Ryan for putting together an amazing experience!Written April 11, 2024
- loise8690 contributionsWine TourAbsolutely fantastic wine tour! From the picturesque vineyards to the knowledgeable guide, every moment was superb. The tastings were diverse. Thoroughly enjoyed the experience. Ryan proceeded to offer us tips for the next two weeks of our holiday in Uruguay and Buenos Aires which all turned out to be amazing and were perfectly suited to us without us even asking. Thank you so much Ryan - you made our holiday! “Vida dura en Uruguay”Written March 6, 2024
- cricketts1080 contributionsGreat day in MontevideoWe're so happy we did this tour! I had been wanting to taste wine from the Tennat grape. We were greeted with a glass of wine when we arrived at Castillo Viejo. Then we walked among the vines and tasted different grape varieties. This was followed by a tour of the production facility. After that, we went to the wine cellar for a luncheon with about 5 different wine pairings. This is a fabulous excursion for any wine lover!Written February 22, 2024
- Michael C0 contributionsIncredible Day and Well Planned! This was one of the best planned tours we’ve done anywhere in the world. The organizer, Ryan, reached out via WhatsApp weeks in advance and was kind enough to coordinate the best way to pick us up and provided tons of recommendations for Uruguay. Our guide on the day of the tour, Miguel, was incredibly kind and fluent in Spanish, Portuguese, and English. We had a great time with him at an amazing winery with an experience just for us. Their food was also amazing. We can’t recommend this enough!Written February 9, 2024

He took us to Ana amazing local establishment that had a restaurant and made much of their own food in addition to the wine. He was welcomed like an old friend at the place, and we had a great time. He also paired my daughter and me with a fun couple from Brazil, and we all had a great time. Can’t recommend it enough. ThanksWritten January 18, 2024

A day of fun, friends, food and wine. The Winery is about 1 hr from Montevideo. Tour operator communicates very well ensuring you have a great time. Our guide Miguel was exceptional. The winemaker hosted the tour educationing us on the vines and varietals. They had just flowered.
Be sure to have the lunch. Well worth the additional cost. A full lunch and exceptional food. Provided one of our guests great vegetarian and gluten free options. Great quality wines. The winemaker reintroduced me to a terrific Cab Franc.

Lovely day trip out of Montevideo into the wine region. Miguel the tour guide and Alejandra at the winery made it such a great time. Their hospitality and passion for the industry comes through as soon as you meet them. It was the most detailed and insightful wine tour that I’ve been on anywhere in the world. And of course, the wines sampled were all delicious.

Ryan is a wonderful host! He is super knowledgeable about wine as well as the locations he took me. He's a great conversationalist and did an excellent job with providing an amazing wine tasting experience! So far, I have had two wine tasting experiences with Ryan and am hoping I can do one more before I leave Uruguay. If you like adventure and going a little off the beaten path, Ryan is your guy.

Such a great experience! We were happy to be accommodated for a last minute tour the next day, and enjoyed our tour with Miguel very much. He shared lots of information about winemaking, along with Montevideo and Uruguay in general, as we made our way to Castillo Viejo winery. There we were greeted by the winemakers themselves, enjoyed a wonderful tour of the grounds and winemaking operations, and sampled several delicious wines with a light lunch. If you are considering this tour, book it!

Excellent tour if you want a private and intimate winery experience. Four generations have tended the vineyards at Casa Grande, producing small-batch wines of excellent quality. But the best part was the friendly and welcoming family who shared their experiences, along with our exceptional guide Dario. They all made sure we had a great time, learned a lot about winemaking, and enjoyed some fabulous wines. Special thanks to Dario whose local knowledge and love for his home country made it a truly memorable experience. Highly recommend.

Loved the fact that this was not a large tourist bus experience. When it promises an intimate tour, that's exactly what you get. We met the owners of the winery and enjoyed their terrific hospitality over the lunch provided. The wines were superb and they did not skimp on the portion size! Having done a few wine tours in different areas, this is as good as it gets.

We enjoyed the wine tour with our guide Miguel. He was knowledgeable and passionate about wine and Uruguay. Pickup and drop off at the hotel was easy. Once there, we walked around a small, pretty winery to learn their process. Then we went to the cellar and tasted 4 wines, accompanied with a charcuterie plate and some empanadas. Lovely half day.
The tour did say ‘private’, but we were told a few days prior that another guest would be joining us. Luckily, we are friendly people and we enjoyed her company so it wasn’t a problem at all - however, others may have been disappointed by that.
Would recommend. 👍🏼

We just took the Tannat Wine Experience tour from Montevideo. This tour exceeded our expectations in so many ways. While this was our first tour with The Wine Experience, we have previously taken wine tours in many wine regions around the world. Ryan was a perfect host and handled every aspect of our planning and touring to perfection. After reading the TripAdvisor reviews, I felt confident that this was the company I wanted to use in planning our wine tours in Montevideo. I contacted Ryan through his website and he responded back very quickly. Everything was set up quickly and easily.
The tour itself was visiting a small family run winery. The visit in our case was led by one of the owners of the winery, the great grandson of the man who started the winery over 100 years ago. We were seated in an exclusive room overlooking the vineyard. We were given a tour of the winery and then after that we had some wonderful wine tastings along with empanadas. While we were tasting the wines we got a real understanding of how each of the wines were produced. After that we had a wonderful three course meal including some delicious Uruguayan beef.
The tour was not rushed at all and the ability to stay in the one winery made us feel like we were visiting with the family instead of just taking a tour.
Thank you Ryan for all your work in making our day so memorable.

Argentina and Chile are the two South American countries known for producing wine, but I had no idea Uruguay also produced wine as well. Tannat is what they’re known for and they’re big and bold. Matias was my guide for the day. He picked me up right on time, was great company for the day to learn about Uruguay and also the wines. I did two wineries, but recommend doing at least three. You won’t be disappointed. I ended up buying twelve bottles to bring home!

We enjoy our wines but could hardly be called oenophiles. We had booked a small group tour, but it was only me, my wife and Ryan. He picked us up at the hotel and off we went to a winery outside Montevideo for a tour and lunch. He's a chatty and very friendly fella. We were shown around by the owner's son (the person who actually runs the place) and who gave us a relaxed, friendly tour of the premises/cellars etc. This was followed by an excellent lunch in a darkly wooded private dining room combined with tasting 4-5 of their wines. Initially we thought only visiting one winery wouldn't be enough and I still think at least one more stop on the tour would have been good to allow for some more tastings, but we thoroughly enjoyed our visit at this winery. Not cheap, but highly recommended.

How long is the average tour? Also, we don't want a lot of walking, so is this a good tour, given that?
Written October 1, 2018
The drive is about an hour each way - not a bad drive though. Good tour with very little walking - we found it interesting to compare their methods with what we are used to in the US. Lunch was very good and not at all hurried.
