- 1Amazon Rescue Center (CREA) is a conservation project that works in partnership with The Dallas World Aquarium Zoo and the Research Institute of the Peruvian Amazon. Located 30 minutes from Iquitos downtown by tuk tuk or 1 hour by bus, CREA offers you the possibility to experience the real conservation in the Peruvian Amazon. The species in the rescue center were rescued from different places where kept illegally in captivity. After the rehabilitation, they are released to their natural habitat. So far CREA has released 23 manatees, 2 pink dolphins, anteaters, sloths, turtles and other animals. One of our guides will explain you the rehabilitation process in the different areas we have such as: Reptiles (yellow spotted river turtle, tortoise), monkeys, birds and manatees. You will also visit our interpretation center "The flooded forest" with real size fiber glass statues of the main aquatic species of the amazon. The tour lasts an hour, you will walk through our path in the forest where you can learn more about the Amazonian.

- meredythM0 contributionsHighlight of my tripThis was the best part of Iquitos. These people are doing great work to educate people and save wildlife.Written February 16, 2022
- T5950WIpeterm0 contributionsManateesWe had stopped at the sanctuary to see the rescued Manatees. They were very adorable. They looked like a cross between a walrus and a dolphin. They eat a lot of plants that float in the river. It was so nice to see the small ones rescued and will go back into the river when they are big and strong. I congratulate the staff for doing a wonderful job in saving those animals.Written November 21, 2021
- Alena B0 contributionsA great place to see manatees, monkeys, sloths, guacamayos and paiche (arapaima)This rescue center is a great place where you can see several animal and bird species together. All animals are rescued and are treated with great care. Most of them return to their natural habitat when they get better. The biggest attraction are definitely the manatees. They are super cute, kind and quiet. Make sure to pay them a visit and support the center with a donation.Written September 21, 2021
- Kenzo V0 contributionsThe work humanity needsI went here a couple of days ago and the work the people do to rescue animals from the amazon is totally touching. The amount of work they put into saving lives is something to admire and to motivate generations for the future. More of this work is needed, if you can volunteer! We need to save the amazing fauna of the world.Written June 16, 2021
- Altadog10 contributionsFantasticWe stopped in here at the end of our Amazon Discovery Tour. The highlight was the rescued manatee’s which will soon be returned to the wild. There were also several species of monkeys which we had seen in the wild but not so close up. The facilities for the animals are stark but they will soon be moving to a new facility which will be much more comfortable. This facility has a relationship with the Dallas Zoo in Texas. The volunteer guide was enthusiastic and knowledgeable. RecommendedWritten February 15, 2020
- Marea13mcz0 contributionsgreat job they do thereAt the centre they indeed do a great job. from rescuing and rehabilitating hurt animals to educating people. Worth a visit. If you can donate, its for a noble cause. Dont expect to interact with the animals.Written February 9, 2020
- 46patriciaj0 contributionsQuick tourQuick tour of the premises. The guide was in training, so we had another guide supervising. Neither were very nice nor accommodating with questions. The animals are kept in small cages, but I guess this is the best that can be done. These are rescued animals and most of them cannot be returned to their natural habitat as they wouldn’t survive. The highlight of the tour was seeing the manatees and knowing the process of rehabilitation being done and that some have been successfully released in their natural habitat.Written January 24, 2020
- NatayaL1_trip0 contributionsThis is a real rescue centerIt is important to understand that you will visit a real rescue center, not place for tourists entertainment. You will have an opportunity to learn more about Amazon nature, to understand eco challenges and how local people address them. Good educational tour for 6+ children and adults.Written January 2, 2020

- Elaine B0 contributionsA Moving ExperienceOur visit to the Amazon Rescue Centre was very memorable. In addition to caring for and releasing injured manatees, the centre strives to build compassion for them among children when they are released and reduce harm caused by human predators. Our excellent guide had helped release one of the manatees when he was younger. In addition to manatees, the centre cares for other injured jungle animals. We found this visit to be a very informative and moving experience.Written December 14, 2019
- sealcoater0 contributionsThis place is not beautiful but what is being done there is!This is a must! The reason why is the cost of entry goes to what these rescue people are doing on a shoestring budget. It will also give you an opportunity to give them a generious contribution to help them in their work so that they can help save the Amazon and its people that depend on tourism to survive.Written November 22, 2019

Such a good and interesting place to visit while in Iquitos. Very informative and accessible outside Iquitos.
Your visit supports the project.
It is better if you go with a tour guide so you can also visit other places on the way.

The Amazon Rescue Center is one of my favorite places outside Iquitos. The effort of those volunteers in impressive. You can learn about the good care they are doing to rescue the amazonian manatee.
Actually, they are now working on rescuing other animal species that are endangered.

After our Amazon River cruise on the way back to Iquitos, the tour stopped by the Manatee Rescue Center. The center works on rehabilitating manatees and other Amazonian animals back to the wild. For animals that cannot be rehabilitated, the center will take care of them or release them to the preserve nearby. Our guide there was very warm and polite to us. He was informative and told us how the center worked and how it was founded. He is very dedicated to preserving the rainforest and hopes that we learn how to do our part.

This is one of the few reputable animal rescues in the area, and they're doing great work. They educate - travelers and locals - about the manatees and the crucial part they play in the ecosystem. They're working to eliminate manatee hunting and other destructive practices. They raise orphaned manatees and release them, and they seem to be doing this all very responsibly. That's why they deserve your donation.
But it's also worth taking the time for a visit. The guided tour is about an hour long, and you get to see and learn about more than just manatees. They have areas holding other rescued animals that needed homes, animals that unfortunately cannot be released back into the wild due to injuries, health problems, or domestication.
And don't go expecting to hold or touch animals. This is a reputable place that puts animal welfare first. It's not healthy for the animals, so no you can't pet a manatee.
The center is easy to get to - about a 30 min taxi or tuk tuk ride from the center of Iquitos. We splurged 100 sol on an air conditioned taxi that would take us there, wait, and bring us back, but you could do it for 5-10 sol each way in a tuk tuk. It costs 30 sol apiece for entry & tour.

You will get a tour which is included in your entry ticket of 20Sol/adult. Despite the manatees you will also see different types of parrots (macaws and loros), kaimans, ocelots, turtles and quite a lot of monkeys playing around. At the entrance they show a short movie about their work. If you ask for it the guide will also translate into english for you.
Great place with people doing a great job saving these animals!!

Very interesting and informative experience and our guide translated our whole tour into English for us. A good way to spend money towards something worth while in helping the rehabilitation of the animals!

CREA is doing such incredible work for the wildlife in the Amazon rain forest. I could have stayed and stared at the manatees for hours. Our guide also woke up the sloth for us to meet, and it was a highlight of my whole trip to Peru. The part of the tour about plants was not quite as exciting, but there were some fun places to take pictures. It felt special to contribute to CREA's mission and is a fun activity in Iquitos for visitors of all ages!

Hard to imagine the good reviews. I know the mission the group is doing is good, however all they have is a couple of young manatees in jacuzzi size tubs. There's nothing else. Then they walk you around and show you a few turtles and some plants. It's really unimpressive.
