- kathrynsD3061ZW0 contributionsAmazing experience meeting local people and seeing Machu PicchuThe Lares trek was an amazing way to see the Andean mountains and see the way of life of the local people. Mauro was an excellent guide, always taking the time to explain the nature and history of the Quechua culture. The trek took us over a high mountain pass with two nights camping and then the trip to Machu Picchu on the train with a night in a hotel. We had excellent support from the horseman Jonathan carrying the equipment and our chef Edgar who cook great food. I have never been so well fed on a camping trip! I would really recommend the Lares trek as an alternative to the busy Inca trailWritten March 7, 2025

- A6451DSpaolah0 contributionsWe conquered Machu Picchu :)My recent two-day tour of the Sacred Valley and Machu Picchu was a truly unforgettable experience, offering a perfect blend of adventure, culture, history, and natural beauty. Here’s a breakdown of my journey, which I highly recommend to anyone looking to explore the wonders of Peru. The Sacred Valley of the Incas, a region rich in history, culture, and stunning landscapes, was the first stop on this incredible tour. Our journey began early in the morning, with a pick-up from our hotel in Cusco. The drive to the Sacred Valley was a scenic one, and I couldn't help but marvel at the rolling hills and dramatic mountains that surrounded us. Along the way, we had a chance to stop at several significant sites. First on the agenda was the ancient town of **Pisac**, famous for its vibrant market and the Pisac Archaeological Site, which sits atop a hill offering panoramic views of the valley. The Inca ruins here were impressive, with terraces that stretch down the hillside. Our guide was knowledgeable, explaining the history of the Incas and their advanced agricultural techniques that were showcased in the terraced fields. We had ample time to explore the ruins and also wander around the market, where I picked up some beautiful handmade crafts. Next, we headed to **Ollantaytambo**, another archaeological gem. The town itself is one of the most well-preserved Incan settlements, and it serves as a gateway to Machu Picchu. The Ollantaytambo ruins, perched on a steep mountain, were even more stunning in person. The complex consists of massive stone structures and terraces that demonstrate the advanced engineering skills of the Incas. Our guide explained how these ruins were used in religious ceremonies and military purposes. The highlight here was climbing the terraces for incredible views of the valley below. The day concluded with a visit to a local restaurant, where we enjoyed a traditional Peruvian meal, including dishes like **alpaca**, **cuy** (guinea pig), and the classic **ceviche**. The food was delicious, and the atmosphere was warm and welcoming, a perfect way to end our first day. After an early breakfast, we made our way to the town of **Ollantaytambo** to catch the train to **Aguas Calientes**, the base town for visiting Machu Picchu. The train ride itself was a remarkable experience, with views of the Urubamba River and surrounding mountains. The journey was scenic, with lush green landscapes and the occasional glimpse of waterfalls along the way. Upon arrival at Aguas Calientes, we had a quick transfer to the bus station, where we boarded the shuttle to the entrance of machu Picchu. As we ascended the winding mountain road, excitement built up, knowing that we were on our way to one of the New Seven Wonders of the World. Stepping through the entrance to Machu Picchu was nothing short of awe-inspiring. The misty morning added to the mystique of the place, and I was instantly captivated by the towering peaks that surrounded the ancient citadel. Our guide took us through the ruins, explaining the significance of various structures, such as the Temple of the Sun and the intihuatana stone which was used as an astronomical calendar. Machu Picchu itself is a marvel of Inca engineering. The precision of the stonework, combined with the stunning natural surroundings, creates an atmosphere of reverence. We explored the main plaza, the terraces, and even hiked up to the Sun Gate for a breathtaking panoramic view of the entire site. The hike was moderately challenging but well worth it for the views. After several hours of exploration, I took some time to simply sit and soak in the atmosphere, allowing the serenity of the place to wash over me. The entire tour was well-organized, with knowledgeable guides who ensured that we not only got to see the highlights but also understood the cultural and historical significance of the sites. I particularly appreciated the mix of guided tours and free time, giving us both structure and the opportunity for personal exploration.Written February 28, 2025
- S3381DWchristianc0 contributionsLifetime experience with Happy PortersMy 4-day trek along the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu was an unforgettable adventure, full of challenges, breathtaking scenery, and rich cultural experiences. The journey started with a mix of excitement and nervousness, as I knew the trail could be physically demanding, but the anticipation of reaching the iconic Machu Picchu kept me motivated. The first day was relatively easy, offering a chance to acclimatize to the altitude and start getting used to the trail. We hiked through beautiful forests, crossing rivers and gazing at the stunning Andean mountains. Our guide, who was incredibly knowledgeable about the history and the flora and fauna of the region, explained the significance of each stop. The sense of connection to the past, understanding that we were walking along the same paths once used by the ancient Inca, made every step feel significant. Day two was the most challenging. Known as the hardest day of the trek, it took us up to Dead Woman's Pass, the highest point on the trail at 4,215 meters. The climb was steep and exhausting, but the sense of accomplishment upon reaching the top was indescribable. The views were jaw-dropping, and the weather, while cold and cloudy, only added to the experience. We descended into the valley below, where we camped, tired but elated. The third day brought its own unique charm. Although still challenging, it featured lush landscapes, ancient ruins, and a great deal of historical insight. The Inca Trail is dotted with remnants of Inca architecture, and each ruin we encountered was a reminder of the impressive civilization that once thrived here. The trail's natural beauty was equally mesmerizing—dense jungle, colorful flowers, and birds soaring overhead. On the final day, the excitement to reach Machu Picchu was palpable. We woke up early to catch the sunrise over the Sun Gate, which provided a magnificent view of the Lost City of the Incas as it was bathed in early morning light. Walking down into Machu Picchu itself, seeing the ruins for the first time, was an emotional experience. The sense of awe, combined with the fatigue of the journey, made the arrival feel like the culmination of a life-changing experience. In conclusion, the 4-day Inca Trail trek was a challenging yet incredibly rewarding journey. It tested my endurance, but the reward of seeing Machu Picchu in such a personal and intimate way made every moment worth it. I would recommend this trek to anyone looking for a physically demanding yet culturally enriching adventure. The combination of nature, history, and achievement made this an experience that will stay with me for a lifetime.Written February 28, 2025
- josecarlosp5090 contributionsHighly recommended for visiting Machu PicchuThe Sacred Valley and Machu Picchu 2-day tour offers a whirlwind but unforgettable experience of Peru's stunning landscapes and ancient Incan history. The journey begins in the Sacred Valley, which is renowned for its lush scenery, charming villages, and impressive archaeological sites. Visitors get to explore highlights like Ollantaytambo, a fortress that once served as a key strategic location, and Pisac, with its vibrant market and terraced mountainside ruins. The second day of the tour is dedicated to the iconic Machu Picchu, which requires a scenic train ride from Ollantaytambo to Aguas Calientes. Upon arrival, a guided tour of the Lost City of the Incas unveils its breathtaking architecture and fascinating history. The experience is enhanced by the sheer magnitude and mystery of the site, with panoramic views that add to its allure. While the 2-day itinerary is packed and might feel rushed, it effectively showcases the most significant cultural and natural attractions in the region. For those with limited time, this tour is an excellent way to experience both the Sacred Valley and Machu Picchu in a condensed but enriching manner. However, it is important to be prepared for some physical exertion, as exploring these sites can be physically demanding due to the altitude and terrain. Overall, it’s a truly memorable trip for those eager to delve into Peru's ancient wonders. The best Happy Gringo team in PeruWritten February 28, 2025
- esenciatubea0 contributionsGreat service with Mauro at Machu PicchuA day trip to Machu Picchu from Cusco is an unforgettable but intense experience, requiring careful planning to make the most of your visit. The journey typically starts early in the morning, with a train ride from either Poroy or Ollantaytambo, followed by a bus from Aguas Calientes to the ruins. The stunning views along the way, from the Sacred Valley to the lush cloud forests, set the stage for the awe-inspiring moment when you finally arrive at Machu Picchu. While a day trip allows you to witness this world wonder, the limited time can feel rushed. You’ll have only a few hours to explore the site before heading back. Guided tours provide valuable historical insights, but those wanting to hike Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu Mountain should plan accordingly, as time constraints may make these hikes challenging. On the downside, the trip can be physically demanding due to early departures, long transportation times, and high-altitude conditions. Weather can also be unpredictable, so dressing in layers and bringing rain protection is essential. Additionally, train and entrance tickets should be booked well in advance due to high demand. Overall, a day trip is perfect for those short on time but eager to experience Machu Picchu’s magic. However, for a more immersive experience, staying overnight in Aguas Calientes allows for a more relaxed visit, possibly catching sunrise over the ruins.Written February 28, 2025

- maurosW1104ND0 contributionsExcellent bike tourThe Death Road Bike Tour is an unforgettable, adrenaline-pumping experience. From the moment you begin descending from the high-altitude Cusco, you’re immediately immersed in a world of jaw-dropping landscapes. The thrill of riding along narrow, winding paths with steep cliffs on one side and stunning jungle views on the other keeps you engaged throughout. The tour guide ensures safety with clear instructions and provides top-notch gear. Although the route can be challenging, especially in areas with loose gravel, the sense of accomplishment at the end is immense. The mix of excitement, natural beauty, and camaraderie makes it a must-do adventure for thrill-seekers.Written February 22, 2025
