Machu Picchu by Train (1 Day)

By Minka Peru Expeditions
About
For many visitors to Peru and even South America, a visit to the Inca city of Machu Picchu is the long-anticipated highpoint of their trip. In a spectacular location, it’s the best-known archaeological site on the continent. This awe-inspiring ancient city was never revealed to the conquering Spaniards and was virtually forgotten until the early part of the 20th century.

          Historic Sanctuary of Machu Picchu
Stop: 4 hours - Admission included
At 3.55am hotel pick-ups will commence, so be up early and ready to go! You’ll be driven to the train station in Ollantaytambo, where you’ll catch the 6.40am train, arriving into Aguas Calientes at around 8.00am. On arrival, your guide will meet you at the train station in Aguas Calientes to take you to the bus, up to Machu Picchu. The bus ride is about 30 minutes. You should arrive to Machu Picchu at around 8.45am, and enter the site. During a tour through this magnificent place, your bilingual guide will explain all about the historic site of Machu Picchu, and you’ll visit all the major places within the lost city. The guided tour will take around 2.5 to 3 hours. Afterwards, you'll have free time to wander around and admire this awe-inspiring place on your own. It’s possible to exit the site to eat a snack at the café, and then re-enter. Your ticket is valid for the entire day. Optional: You can climb the mountain of Huayna Picchu (tickets need to be bought at the time of your Machu Picchu purchase), which is a 1.5 to 2-hour roundtrip. This trip is without a guide. The entrance time is 10.00-11.00am, so if you choose to take this tour, your guided tour will be quicker in order to finish in time to enter Huayna Picchu. After, you’ll descend to Aguas Calientes, the town named for its hot springs. You can get there by bus: it’s a 30-minute trip, and buses leave every 5 minutes. Then you’ll return by train to Cusco. You can choose the 4.12pm train to return directly to Cusco, or the 7.00pm train to return to Ollantaytambo - the train ride is about 1 hour and 40 minutes. A mini-bus will be waiting in Ollantaytambo to take you to Cusco (approx. 90 min).

          It was okay....
It was okay, but I won't do it again. Main language was spanish, not really bi-lingual. Entrance was 20sol, not 10 like on Tripadvisor shown... For me this trip is not bad but overpriced.

Very good for the price and the views!
Absolutely amazing ruins and the salt mines were out of this world. For the price it’s a fantastic excursion!

          Decent budget hike
Enjoyable hike and cool option to ride the horse; only critique is that the bus had very narrow seats and with bumpy roads caused pretty bad motion sickness (would recommend you bring motion sickness meds).

          Negligent and dangerous tour provider
ATVs were in very bad condition and caused at least one near fatal accident. All the Cusco tour companies use the same ATV provider and they need to be put out of business due to negligence.

          Worthy rough hike
Chose this trip without knowing anything, at the end it was wonderful! The guide Wilian was very nice and the transport and food was tasty. This time I think the information provided by the guide could be improved, though he was very talkative and eager to answer questions he was too obsessed with checking on the slowest walkers of the group that those of us who arrived to the top got almost on our own (my case following the horses), aside from that, everything was amazing.

          Great experience
The trip was really good. The hike to the lake was around a 6/10 difficulty but was worth it when we got there. Be prepared for a long drive back to cusco.

          Essential cultural experience
Fantastic ancient engineering feat, masterfully and traditionally preserved for 600 years! Please go and walk across this piece of history, feel it swinging under your feat, see the river flowing beneath you, feel the braided ropes in your hands. The tour itself was also a great experience - our guide, Diego, was kind, intelligent, and funny, and he knew the answers to all our questions. The first stop, the mini volcano was a wonderful trip into the archaic depths of prehistory, and it's got to be the cutest volcano in the world! On the way back, we stopped to see a few lagoons, which were hosting some migratory flamingos! (My wife particularly enjoyed the flamingos.) Breakfast and lunch were provided at a tourist-pit-stop buffet, which was convenient. However, since the tour began so early, we were hungry before breakfast and before lunch, so bring pleanty of snacks and water. The only reason this isn't a 6/5 star rating is that we had to get up at 4:15am. It would have been much more enjoyable if we could have started a few hours later, even at the expense of cutting parts of the tour out or arriving in Cusco later. However, my wife and I seem to be the only tourists in Cusco that think such, because nearly every tour leaves well before dawn - making for a lot of busses full of groggy, unenthusiastic tourists.

Nice glimpse into rural culture and history
This day trip isn't going to compete with Machu Picchu or Rainbow Mountain, but if you enjoy learning a little about the culture and history outside of the main tourist areas, I highly recommend this tour. Watching the family prepping the bridge (some watering and stressing) and understanding how this is built annually is really interesting. And riding in the countryside and seeing the small villages is a peek into the past. Yes, the long ride is a bit of a pain, but the vans this company uses do seem to have slightly more legroom than the other vans I rode in on other tours. And tour guide seemed very mindful of photo opportunities along the way, making very brief stops for photos as we saw interesting things along the way, such as the flamingos. I thought the winding road into the valley was cool and asked if we could stop for a few minutes and they obliged. Overall, if getting away from the typical tourist stuff excites you and you want to experience a small slice of very rural life, take this tour!

          A magical place
Our excursion to Humantay was incredibly well organized. Our guide was excellent and ensured that everyone was safe and knew a lot about the area. The breakfast took place in a beautiful inn/restaurant overlooking the mountains- the views were just amazing , it was simple but filling, the lunch on the other hand was robust and had many options such as soups, pastas, salad, stews, and juices. It was very filling. I also appreciated that our transport had heat and we were with a very fun group. I recommend this to all.

          An incredibly beautiful place!
Humantay lake leaves you speechless with the mountains and glaciers immediately behind the stunning turquoise lake. We took horses up to help with the altitude, and it was a fun way to get up to the top. From the horse drop off point to the lake is only a brief trip up and over a rise and then the most incredible sight beholds you. The walk back down was a bit rocky. We used Minka Peru Expeditions to get there and our guide Wilson was excellent! he was very attentive to all the details and very punctual. We loved this trip. Can't recommend it highly enough. Thank you Wilson!

          Fantastic guide, questionable transportation
My daughter and I booked this tour and had a pleasant time. Humantay Lake is a beautiful sight and definitely worth the hike. Our tour guide was excellent. He made the experience meaningful and was very attentive throughout the day. On the other hand, the transportation left a lot to be desired. The van was full of mosquitos and we ended up with dozens of bug bites. Additionally, the tour was entirely full (18 people) and there was no room move at all on the van. The van had a hole in the interior wall and there was no heating, so the six plus hours of driving was very cold. Lastly, we were one of the slowest vehicles on the road. The drive took longer than it should have. Overall the guide was fantastic, but I would look for different transportation options.

Hello. I would like to tell you that our experience with this agency and with the guide Fredy Callanaupa was EXCELLENT. We liked not only the punctuality, kindness and experience but also the more human side of him. Being a long trip and climbing Machu Picchu was very demanding, he gave us the best advice to make the experience the most rewarding and wonderful.
