The one day tour was an amazing, unforgettable experience. Without the time to do the 4 day hike, I can’t imagine having done Machu Picchu any other way. The one day hike (~15k) was challenging but extremely rewarding as we were able to experience both the Inca trail and Machu Picchu itself all in one day.

It’s a long day but extremely worth it, and if you’re willing to do the hike a bit quicker, I’d highly recommend the one day option to avoid crowds. It’s the same itinerary as the 2 day but more condensed, so we were the first to make it to the sun gate and Machu Picchu for some prime views and photo opps, got to tour the site in the afternoon, and had time for a nice dinner in aguas calientes before heading back to Cuzco.

Our guide Armando was incredible. He’s an excellent storyteller that answered all our questions along the way. He is also an amazing photographer that knew all the best stops to take excellent photos along the way. He was great at communicating where we were and what was next, and he was extremely encouraging on the hike and never was frustrated when we needed to take a break.

Our driver Junior was excellent getting us to and from the train station in Ollytantambo. He was super efficient and good and navigating some treacherous roads smoothly.

If you do the hike, I recommend bringing: a light day pack to hold everything, a lightweight poncho, good quality hiking boots, good socks, a hat, sunscreen, lots of water and an extra shirt or set of clothes in case you want to change after. Leave room in your pack to carry the boxed lunch as well.

Liz, my tour guide, was amazing. This was one of the best experiences of my life. With Sam Travel Perú, the tour is customized because the groups are small. They are local people who love to share their customs and create a personalized experience. We left early and we’re practically alone because all of the other companies start hiking later in the morning. Because of this, we were able to get great pictures and really enjoy the solitude and sounds of nature. This is especially important on day 2 when going to Machu Picchu. Because Liz knows the area, she knew when to leave so we could see the sunrise over the mountains and to avoid the people/crowds. There were maybe only 5 other people there, so I feel that the other companies don’t do this. Also, she shared traditions and customs you wouldn’t otherwise know. Also, she had great recommendations for places to eat in Aguas Calientes and other places I was going. Overall, I wouldn’t book with any other company and cannot speak highly enough of how amazing this tour was!!!

I joined the 3day sacred valley & short Inca trail with awesome guide called Jhonny. What good about Jhonny is that he keeps very close eye on you and give necessary support. Of course the knowledge and friendliness are excellent but his attitude to provide personal support was just outstanding. For example, I was alway being the last in a hike and dragging the party but Jhonny never leave me during 6 hours of hike and give me the encouragement. Thanks to such support, we were the one of the first group to arrive to Sun Gate and saw the magnificent view without crowd. I will never forget his support.
I would recommend Sam Travel as they keep the party to not more than 6-7 people and give a great support as explained above.
My next hope is to make myself fit and someday join the 4 day Inca trail with Jhonny.

We did the 2-day Inca Trail with Samtravel and were really happy with everything from start to finish. The communication was great throughout and they left us without any doubts as to what documents were needed, what to bring, and what to expect logistically.

We were picked up from our hotel and drivеn to Ollantaytambo from where we took the train to the starting point of our trek. The trek itself took several hours and wasn't too difficult, but the sceneries and sites we saw were absolutely mesmerising. Our guide Liz was fantastic and was very important to us having a great time - she explained everything well and made sure we were feeling well throughout the whole experience. We finished at the Sun Gate and just above Machu Picchu where we took some amazing photos. We spent the night in Aguas Calientes where Liz took us to dinner, and we went back to Machu Picchu early the next morning to do the tour of the famous city which was led by Liz and was super interesting.

Overall, we are very happy with Samtravel and with Liz and would highly recommend doing the Inka Trail with them!

My husband and I had an amazing time with Raymer, Maribel, and our group of 7 travellers doing the Short Inca Trail from Km 104 to Machu Picchu + guided tour of Machu Picchu next day. We felt well informed about all the logistics before the trip and during the trip. Ray happily answered any questions we had in regards to Peruvian culture, and he was very knowledgeable of geography and plants that grew along the Inca Trail. He passionately explained the history and importance of each Inca site. Ray led the group for the fast walkers. Maribel made sure everyone was taken care of and walked with the last person. Both guides had great positive energy and taught us the phrase "Si se puede." We took frequent breaks for chatting and photo taking. The view were breathtaking (literally and figuratively). They made accommodations for one member who wanted to catch the sunrise before the rest of the group. Maribel woke up extra early and went up to Machu Picchu in the pouring rain. We went with Ray at a later time. We sat on the grounds of Machu Picchu listening to Ray explain the history of the Incan people and watching the clouds swirling across the mountains and the ancient city behind him. Halfway through the Circuit 3 guided tour, my husband and I broke off from the group to do the Huayna Picchu trek, and Ray walked us to the checkpoint and went over the logistics of how to meet the group back in town. The entire tour was well organized and ran so smoothly thanks to the beautiful teamwork of Ray and Maribel. We laughed, bonded, and felt like a family within our short time together. Thank you for the beautiful memories!

SAM travel managed to get us good food on the lunch box, nice hotel and restaurant for dinner. Transfers were punctual and safe. Our guide Jorge was very helpful, providing seats with great view on the train and taking photos at the memorable places. He kept encouraging us during the hike although providing quick stops for shadow and water, always being sure that we are ready to continue. At the archeological Inca places he seemed very passionate and knowledgeable about its culture and history. At the end of the first day we were gifted with a perfect sunset at the most magnificent viewpoint of Machu Picchu.

Dayvit was an amazing guide, and he was very friendly and engaging throughout the trip. Sam travels also did an amazing job taking care of all the itinerary plans and everything, so we can enjoy fullest in one of the lifetime worth of experience. Dayvit was very helpful in telling us so many historical facts of both Inca trail and Machu piccu and even recommended places to try out in the local city we stayed at. During Inca trail hike, Dayvit was very mindful of everyone pace and made sure everyone was okay throughout the hike. I'm very glad we chose Sam Travels for our trip, and we were so thrilled to have Dayvit as our tour guide. Definitely recommend them. They don't disappoint.

The short inca trail that was lead by Jhonathan was nothing short but incredible. Jhon gave not only his expertise and experience, but his passion to show and tell our group ‘the family’ about the history and culture of the Incas. No question was put of bounds and he was happy to answer them all.

We felt safe, well looked after and communication was fantastic. No detail was left unturned.

We highly recommend hiking Machu Picchu mountain on the second day, you gain such a sense of accomplishment reaching the top of many many stairs, but the views are impeccable and mind blowing from seeing snow capped mountains to Machu Picchu and having a 360 view of the mountain ranges… a very special moment that I will cherish forever with my husband.

This company is extremely well organised, attention to detail and communication is 24/7

What an amazing trip! We booked Sam Travel for Cusco city tour, sacred valley tour, and the short 2-day inca trail. All three tours went way above our expectations.
Johny was our tour guide, and he made the entire experience so much fun for my family, especially my two kids (17 and 15 years old) loved it.
Johny did a fantastic job of explaining all the history, we never felt rushed.
The inka trail was the highlight of the trip, and we were so happy Johny was our guide. As our family sometimes moves slow, we didnt feel rushed, and took our time taking some breathtaking photos.
Johny's restaurant recommendations were great also.
What a great well run travel company!

I went on the Short Inca Trail to Machu Picchu at the end of August 2021, and I have to say this was one of the best decisions I have made. We could have easily just taken the train to Machu Picchu, but I would have missed out on some of the greatest views on the trail to Machu Picchu. The trail is about 7.5 miles long, and took us about 6 hours to complete with plenty of time to eat, drink, enjoy the scenery, and take pictures. When you reach the Sun Gate, you are rewarded with an awesome view of Machu Picchu. Jorge was our tour guide, and he was very knowledgeable about Peru, the Incas, the sites we visited, local foods, drinks, etc, and many other topics. The stay in Aguas Calientes was also enjoyable, and the hotel we got was definitely not bad. The second day was a history lesson as we walked through the actual Machu Picchu Citadel. We were lucky that it was only 33% full due to the pandemic. It was quite an enjoyable experience. I highly recommend if you aren't up for the 4 day hike to consider the Short Inca Trail.
