BAD TOUR - CANCELLED LAST MINUTE
Horrible experience. On Christmas Eve, with less than 24 hour notice, the tour company cancelled the trip. (I booked through Viator, a subsidiary of Tripadvisor, who mandates consumers can only cancel with more than 24 hour notice.) Luckily, I was able to go with another tour company. When contacted, the original tour company claimed it was cancelled due to weather. However, when I went to Rainbow Mountain, there was no issues with weather. I talked to other tour guides from other services and they said there was no issue with weather. Additionally, the other tour services speculated this service suddenly had their guides absent due to Christmas and just blamed weather. I would not trust this company ever and would recommend to go with other services to Rainbow Mountain.

Photoshop at its most extreme......Totally underwhelming mass tourist trap full of Instagram posers. 7 hours on a cramped minibus only to be taken for an idiot

It’s worth doing it for the experience!
We had a very rare experience since it snowed on the day we went. It was still fun but it was cold! We didn’t see the different colors of Rainbow Mtn but it’s unique to have pictures of the snow covered terrain. Ours guides Luis and Alfredo were super nice!! The breakfast buffet was okay but lunch was great! The hike is not that hard as long as you pace yourself.

Did Rainbow mountain and Red valley hike with Alpaca tours, although hike was grueling due to Altitude our guide Luc was great she encouraged all the way and kept pace slow to match ours. Meals were great, Wonderful experience. Thanks Luc.

          Rainbow Mountains - Honest Review
Had a great day out in the Rainbow Mountains organized by Machu Pich Reservations. Even though it is not a long trek up to the top, being over 5000m high you will feel the effects of the lack of oxygen. As long as you take it nice and easy, drink plenty of water you will do it, you don’t even need trekking boots, just a decent pair of trainers will do At the top the weather can change suddenly as we found out, wind, then scattered shower followed by hailstones so make sure you have a warm fleece and waterproof jacket with you at all times. If you think you are going to struggle or have just come into Cusco and not had a chance to aclimatise then recommend that you let your guide get you a horse to take you up three quarters of the way, that way you still get to experience walking the last bit whilst safeguarding your health. Reason why I am saying is that because in our group, one couple were rushed to hospital in an ambulance due to the altitude and then whilst on the way down a young girl collapsed in the back of our van and we had to get her out and giver her oxygen, thanks Shep. Machu Pichu Reservations can you make sure that you remove used oxygen bottles as the first one we used was empty, second one nearly empty, luckly the third one was full.

Took a tour with this company after reading other recommendations here, and do not regret it. We heard horror stories about other tour operators and feared the worst, but thankfully wasn't the case with this company. Both breakfast and lunch options were ample and delicious (though I'd be careful with eating too much for breakfast given the altitude and hike to follow). Both the driver and Anibal knew what they were doing and ensured we were taken care of at all times. I myself couldn't do the hike myself after messing up my knee in Macchu Picchu days before, and Anibal helped me secure a horseback ride to and from the mountain. (Side note--that was a great option if you can't do the full hike. They drop you off sufficiently far enough for you to brave the altitude and part of the hike so it's not "cheating".) We also got to the mountain early enough to beat crowds, which is helpful. Would definitely trust this experience with them again.

Amazing tour and it was not as busy in the off season! Many bathroom stops along the way (cost 2 soles each time to use - but you get toilet paper and running water!) Tour guides are good at making sure group is okay

Rainbow Mountain - Worth the hike!
Rainbow Mountain is a must see in Peru! Never experienced anything like it. The hike is not for the faint of heart, but the views at the top were breathtaking and so worth the trek up! Anibal was an excellent tour guide and made the trip that much better! Highly recommend!

Tour guides were great! Mountains were beautiful! It's next to a glacier which was a nice bonus. The hike is challenging but doable.

Best way to visit Rainbow Mountain is by taxi from Cusco! For 280 Soles the taxi will bring you and will wait for you to go back. If you leave around 08:30 you won’t be sharing the mountain with hundreds of tourists. (Most tours arrive the same time which makes it very busy, you’ll have to wait to be able to make you pictures). Don’t skip Red Valley, it’s a 30 minute hike from Rainbow mountain and costs 20 soles. At the top you’ll have a 360 view of Rainbow Mountain, Red Valley and surrounding mountains.

We decided to take a private tour, looking online we found the company "Rainbow Mountain Cusco" a local company that operates the tours the this wonderfull place .

Since the first email they were very informative and they told us that we were on the rainy season, then it was a risk to take the tour because of the weather, after a discution with my parner we decided to take the risk and go ahead!.

We are very happy to take this private experience, the weather wasw good, the guide very kind and informative and the van with 9 seats it was only for us, they take care of you and follow the rules against the covid. (I guess on a private tour is easier to follow those rules).

The food was on a local restautant and was delicious!! .. the guide took a extra oxygen tank and there was not to much people on the way.. there were 2 groups of peruvian people .. and our private party.. the guide explained that it is common to have more than 800 people a day on the route but this time was very few.

The hike is quite hard, but if you take your own pase you will conquest this amazing wonder.

Support local companies!! they really need it and they have a very goos service, we really recommend "Rainbow Mountain Cusco" Local tour operator.

My wife and I are on our honeymoon, travelling throughout Peru for three weeks. We booked this tour back in January of 2024 and have been looking forward to it for many months.

First off, there seemed to be some kind of dispute between the local leaders allowing access to Mount Vinikunka so our original tour was put into question. It just so happend that this dispute landed the day before we were set to start. The tour company was forthright with us and offered an immediate solution via the Palcoyo Mountain.
Luckily for us, en route with our tour guide Anibal and driver Victor, they recieved confirmation that we could access Mount Vin via another road. Success!

Anibal, our guide for the day, was such a pleasure to be around. He is funny, kind, and knowledgeable in his craft. We couldn't have been happier with how the day went. Being a private tour, we felt more secure going with our own guide at our own pace as the altitude is no joke! Again, Anibal was fully prepared, offering extra warm clothing like touques and gloves if needed. He had some spray that we would put on our hands and inhale rapidly to help with the altitude which came in handy. From the moment we were picked up to dropped off, we knew we were in great hands and will always look back on the day we got up to 5,036 m with a smile on our face.

This tour is a must for those who want a more personal touch to hiking up to Mount Vinikunka. Having gone through it, we feel it was worth every cent!

Thanks Anibal and Victor for an unforgettable experience!

Annibal and the driver was a great experience.

They take care of you and value your time and money. I felt very safe regarding the fact that altitude was challenging there but Annibal was waiting for me and also motivating me.

Also very punctual which is very important as you wake really early up.

        Best experience ever!

        Thank you guys!

If you planning to visit Rainbow mountain
especially with kids under 10 years old,
private tour is the way to go. This company
took care of us. Started at 03:30 took us
in a comfortable van with warm blankets on a 3 hour ride, had breakfast eggs, sausages western style mixed peruvian. Our tour guide made assured that had everything with them o2 tank, snacks, water.. Brought another guy just incase needed help with kids..

        Thanks, everyone was okay tolerated
the high altitude. I've seen some hikers throwing up along the way, altitude was intense. If you've plans, make sure had enough time to acclimate, atleast 3-4 days in Cusco altitude sickness, no joke.. Drink  a lot of water, bring gatorade powder, and bring meds such NSAIDs very helpful.. Horses are also available if needed one way or roundtrip.

We had a great experience on our tour! Anibal and our driver were very accommodating. We left at 4am and returned around 3pm. This was perfect as we had to catch a flight at 9pm out of Cusco.
We would definitely recommend Anibal and the private tour if you want to go at your own pace, fast or slow! We chose to ride up the mountain on a dirt bike and walk down.
The roads are narrow near rainbow mountain. Our driver was confident and was concentrated on the road. We never felt unsafe. Our driver was also very polite and always opened our door.

Breakfast, lunch, snack were included. All delicious.

        Thanks Anibal!

It was a wonderful experience. You have to be in very good shape. We first went from Lima to Urubamba, next day we went to Cusco and finally the third day to the Rainbow mountain, to get our bodies ready for the altitude, go gradually increasing the altitude. It is very hard. We did it. You can also take horses that will take you up, and just walk 200 meters. Take good care of the food you eat and prepare yourself. It is a wonderful feeling when you get to the top of the mountain. It is beautiful.

My husband and I reserved a private hike with Exploor to the alternative route to see rainbow mountain. Carlos was our driver and he was super safe driver. In addition, another Carlos was our guide and he was super attentive, patient, sharp, and fun. We stopped in a town known for making bread. PS bathrooms were pretty dirty and bring toilet paper as it limited in the various stops. After 30 minutes we stopped in a town with 3 bridges very old, old, and new and it has an incredible background. Then we headed to a restaurant close by for breakfast eggs, toast, and the bread we purchased, cool coffee, and fresh juice. All with filtered water. Here the bathroom was dirty and no hand soap so bring some. Then we drove another 1.5 hours to the mountain range which took about 1 hour to drive up the mountain range. We saw alpacas and llamas everywhere and my husband got to plant some potatoes the old school way by the driver asking the local to show him. The towns are quaint, you see natives walking, children going to school, in the last 30 minutes you will find the entrance to the mountain range that costs 10 soles per person and you can use the bathroom for 2 soles. These bathrooms were clean. A local baby toddler came to our car and we gave her granola bars which she loved.
Take loose change because it may be an issue. We saw an enormous pack of llamas and alpacas being transferred to the local towns carrying potatoes it was so cool being so close but they get scared and don't let you come close. Once at the top we used the bathroom which you put water in after use for 2 soles one last time just in case, again clean for the location. Got geared up and hiked up. Our guide made the pace to ensure we got accumulated and we started slow and took breaks stopping at different times for pictures and enjoying the site. We had mura tea at the top which is tasted soft and it a relaxing. We hiked up to the remainder approximately 16400 feet played a victory song at the top and celebrated making it and without oxygen or issues. (Although we did have a US prescription for altitude medicine we started 2 days before.) We then headed back which took at 1 hour stopped one last time before driving back to Cusco because we were tired we skipped lunch. Got back to our place at 4pm after driving thru main Cusco which was crazy traffic. Our guide was constantly ensuring that we were comfortable and gave us fun facts on the region. This experience is on my top 5 things I have done and was amazing and I would definitely recommend. Bring gloves, good grip shoes, jacket, light snacks, and hat to protect from the sun.

In my opinion, this is a must see. I enjoyed it more than the trek to Machu Pichu that we did on the same trip a few days later. This is like stepping back in time. There are herds of alpacas roaming about because there is a wool collective nearby. You hike in a valley with mountains and a glacier. Rainbow mountain is the destination and it is nice, but the hike to get to it is what counts, and it is worth it. Do not worry about physical conditioning or altitude, you can rent a horse one way or both ways (although they look more like mules).
Buy your tickets in Cusco, we went for $40 per person. Do NOT buy outside Peru. Give it an entire day, it is 3 hrs. by car from Cusco, although the drive itself is quite scenic, albeit unnerving.

Get the horse ride for those with altitude sickness/low stamina - save some energy for the hike. The horse ride only gets you to the bottom of the hill (easy trail walk for around 1 hour), you will then need to hike for another 30-45min (can be slippery/strong wind/cold) in order to get to the instagrammable view. Horse ride costs 60soles for a trip/90soles return.
The crowd is almost gone by 11am.
