It was a wonderful experience, one of our best experiences of Peru overall. It was pretty tiring and did have a level of difficulty, but in the end it was so worth it. If you can make this trip later on your Cusco itinerary the altitude should not be underestimated, we’re from the mountains of Colorado and we did this on our 3rd day in Cusco after Machu Picchu and it still was difficult, but it was the best time for us to do it since we were acclimated to the altitude. Chew coca leaves, be fully hydrated and you’ll do just fine. Be ready for an easy amazing time with the company and great food and great views.

We were a little nervous to book this trip after reading some reviews regarding the difficulty of the hike. The hike itself it not too bad, however, the altitude makes it strenuous. Having done it, we recommend having at least a couple days to acclimate to the altitude in Cusco before attempting this trek. Make sure to drink plenty of water and bring along any altitude sickness medications (we used Acetazolamide) and coca leaves. Take as many breaks as you need to in order to make it safely to the top. Horses are available along multiple points if needed (80 soles round trip). We also recommended doing the extra hike to Red Mountain as the views are incredible.

There are two places to use the bathroom on the hike to Rainbow Mountain. There isn’t a bathroom along the trail for Red Mountain. We went during rainy season and while it was sunny during the hike, it had rained the night before, leaving snow on the mountain. Luckily by the time our group ascended the mountain (second group that day), the sun had melted most of the snow. Due to the changes in weather, make sure to bring layers, warm hat, gloves, sunglasses, good hiking boots, and a poncho if hiking during rainy season.

Excellent and skilled tour guides! Our tour guides and driver made the experience today! We made plenty of stops to use bathrooms along the way to rainbow mountain. We were also fed both a delicious breakfast and lunch which was much appreciated! We were provided walking sticks, water, and oxygen was available if needed. Our tour guide was very knowledgeable and gave a history on rainbow mountain and how it came to be. Would definitely recommend horses on the way up and would encourage this excursion for people that have acclimated to the altitude appropriately.

Overall, excellent service and excursion!

We went on this tour on our 4th day of being on Cusco. Although we were somewhat acclimated, it still was a very challenging hike. For us, it was mostly due to the altitude. The views on the hike were beautiful and worth the visit. However, if possible, we recommend to take the hike towards red valley because it had a stunning view. Sadly, during the hike, our tour guides were constantly rushing us because we had to come back before midday to our bus. Because of this, we felt that there were little space for breaks, further admire the view and take photos. This was very bothersome, specially during our hike to red valley. For further improvement, it would be better to give more time to do the hike and divide the groups that payed to go to red valley as it takes longer to arrive there.

In the end, the views over the Red Valley where more spectacular than the Rainbow Mountain.

From Cuzco it is a three hour bus ride to the starting point of the hike. From there it is another one to two hours hike, depending on your physical shape and how you cope with the altitude. On the Rainbow Mountain there are dozens or even hundreds of people, the view is nice, but more impressive than the colors of the mountain are the views on the surrounding valleys and mountain ranges.

If you are willing to take a little detour on your way back you can have a look from a nearby mountain ridge into the Red Valley. This i found more spectacular than the Rainbow Mountain and way fewer people were there, so everything was more relaxed and one could enjoy the view.

Overall, a day well spent. However, if you do a different tour instead you will also be fine.

Amazing trip to see Rainbow Mountain and the extra trip to see the Red Valley (which was entirely worth it!) I was especially happy with how early our bus got to Rainbow mountain, we were one of the first three busses there which was great as we could hike and take pictures without it being too crowded. We had about an hour at the top of Rainbow mountain which was perfect. And then we had plenty of time to hike and admire the red valley. Overall a great tour!

We did this trip on January 2, 2020. The trip was amazing. We were picked up very early (I think at 4:00 am) so we were one of the first groups hiking the mountain. It was snowing on that day so we didn't see colors and we didn't do a red valley, but views were incredible. Staff is incredible and very professional; they make sure everyone is doing well during the entire trip. They all speak English and share a lot of interesting stories. I might be back in the future to do this tour in the summer. Thank You!

Rainbow Mountain and the Hike through the Red Valley was an amazing trip!!

I seriously suggest you go back from Rainbow Mountain through the Red Valley. Yes, it is a 3-hour hike but you will always be descending from the 5000m.a.s.l that Rainbow Mountain is located at.

Trust me, it is totally worth it. You will see different landscapes, a river, llamas, alpacas and vicunas. Near the end, like an hour before getting to the bus I had this feeling like being in a Lord of the Rings movie, hahaha. All those mountains, the rocks, the vegetation have some similarities with those movies.

Weather is quite variable so be sure to bring a waterproof jacket, a rain cover, sunscreen and sunglasses. Hot chocolate would be nice once you get to the top.

I am posting a few pictures from the Red Valley, hope you do this tour, you will love it!!

This trip takes you to a different region, which made the trip worthwhile. Wait until you get to Cusco to book this trip. We paid 3x what other by booking early. There are scads of places to book this trip in Cusco. The best part of this hike was going on to see the Red Mountain for an extra 10 soles. The Rainbow part of this hike is a human highway - we were on the trail with 100s of people.
Nonetheless, we got to see this part of Peru, outside the Sacred Valley.
Also note that you top-out well above 14,000 ft, so if you have issues with altitude, be prepared.

Those we intend to do this must really be mentally, psychologically, physically and emotionally prepared.

Due to the high altitude, just going up rainbow mountain alone can be breathless and sucking up one’s energy in the early morning. You can rent a horse up for 60 sols to conserve your energy but the last part to the peak would still need you to complete on your own. And honestly it’s not easy to battle the high altitude and the cold air, and hunger.

After rainbow mountain, if you are continuing to red valley, it would be around 6km of trekking up and down. The trekking could be challenging so proper trekking shoes would do you good. Also trekking poles.

During my trip it was hailing and those it’s small, it’s actually painful. With the cold win and wetness (do bring a good poncho) trekking down 6km is no joke and many places were slippery. Me and a Friend slipped and fell and I suffered severe back pain. If not that I am carrying a backpack I believe my spine would be injured too.

Overall the scene may be night but it also depends on the weather and how prepared you are. The high altitude would most likely be the killer as it caused one to constantly feel the heaviness on your forehead area.

Hope above information would be helpful for you should you choose to do this activity. Proper gear, and some food to munch and water to drink is really necessary.
