A delicious education and culinary journey
Chef José Luis of Uchu restaurant met me at my hotel to take me on an awesome culinary journey through Peruvian food and culture. He prepared some delicious bites for me in the form of Cuy (guinea pig) prosciutto on one of the nearly 4000 varieties of potatoes, and an alpaca sausage with twice prepared potatoes to dip in a yellow sweet pepper sauce that I’m still thinking about over a week later….all washed down with a Chilcano (using Pisco) laced with my favorite fruit….passion fruit purée. It was an awesome start! We proceeded next door to Uchu to try an amazing ceviche and papas rellenas, mashed potatoes stuffed with peppers that were also flavor bombs! We then walked the streets of Cusco trying the street food hawkers wares (sweet tamales….Wow! & Picarones best described as a Peruvian donut made from (yet another) sweet potato variety and squash blossoms all doused in sugar cane syrup). How amazing those were!! The best part of the experience though was knowing that my financial contribution to this experience would benefit human awareness globally to combat ongoing pollution, illegal logging and other environmental issues in Peru that threaten the Amazon cloud forest which makes up nearly 40% of Peruvian territory and protects hundreds of species of birds specific to only certain areas in Peru. On top of tasting Peru in a few hours time I felt really good about doing my part to make sure my experience can be shared with many others after me.

Great class with a great host.
The food was delicious, and the host was great! The chef, Jose, was friendly, funny, and personable. He really made the class special. Nothing bad about the experience at all. The food, dishes, fruits, and cocktails were very similar to other things we'd tried in Peru.

      BEST cooking class ever!
This was the best cooking class I’ve ever taken! We did a private class, learned all about unique Peruvian ingredients and the influences from other cultures. Started with a fruit tasting, learned about perus unique potatoes, corn and peppers found at a market, made our own ceviche (this was the best ceviche we had, even compared to ones we had in Lima!). Then we did a pisco tasting and made Chilcanos and followed that with making our own alpaca lomo saltada with the most amazing flambé I’ve ever seen. This was professional level cooking! We finished by enjoying our meal and chilcanos in the beautiful courtyard. Christina our chef was amazing, so warm and friendly and knowledgeable! Christina sent us all the recipes and welcomed us to email her with any questions we have. Highly recommend this experience!! If you like cooking you will absolutely love it, and if you like food you will not be disappointed!!! Nice activity to mix in your itinerary with visiting all the ruins as well.

An Amazing Peruvian Cooking Class in Cusco!
Chef Alejandro shared the history and evolution of Peruvian culinary arts. We learned about the local meats, veggies, grains, herbs, and their significant health benefits. We were served several samples of local fresh fruits and delicious appetizers made with local fare. He demonstrated, then coached us as we made both authentic ceviche (accommodating our individual food preferences) and limo saltado. We topped off our three hour class with him teaching us how to make several Peruvian Pisco drinks. Chef Alejandro was personable and knowledgeable with the skills of a high quality instructor. We left happy, smarter, and satisfied!

      Wonderful cooking experience!
We had a wonderful experience learning to cook local Peruvian food. Christina and the team put on a fabulous class - first learning and tasting local fruits, making local dishes such as ceviche and lomo saltado and of course a pisco beverage (Chilcano)! Thank you for a wonderful experience!

      Amazing dishes with an expert
Angelo was an exceptional tour guide; highly knowledgeable on both the culinary history of Peru and gastronomy in general. Definitely come hungry, you get a nice mix of high end faire at a restaurant and traditional street food with a couple cocktails thrown in. Highly recommend.

Brilliant, well thought out, fun experience. José was so knowledgeable and even sent some recipes for us to take home and try out. The passion he has for cuisine makes it 10/10

      Fun, entertaining, and educational too!
This cooking class was so fun! It started with learning about the foods and spices of Peru, which was so interesting. We tried a variety of fresh fruits and they were delicious. Then we made a ceviche dish that was so fresh and perfectly seasoned. One person in our group couldn't eat uncooked fish so they made ceviche zuchinni which was also delicious. We then learned to make a couple cocktails including the famous pisco sour. And the class ended by cooking a delicious alpaca dish. Even if you don't cook often, this is a class someone with any level of cooking experience can enjoy. It was so fun and everything tasted great! I would highly recommend this to anyone who wants a unique experience and full stomach. :)

      Great Time!
We loved our food tour with Jose! We tried so many great local specialities - from pisco sours and chilcanos to ceviche, tamales, anticuchos, and piccarones! Our host Jose was amazing! He gave great overviews of Peruvian food and drinks, made sure we were having a great time, and offered great recommendations outside of the tour itself. We highly recommend taking this tour with Marcelo Batata group!

      Wonderful experience!
This was a wonderful experience! We learned so much about Peru, Cusco, food, and local agriculture. We really had a great time cooking too! I’ve already made one of the drinks at home - the Chillcano. My family loved it and I plan on cooking the other plates too. Of course I will be making a Pisco sour too! I can’t say enough about how comfortable and fun our experience was. Definitely a highlight of our trip to Peru!

The cook was very nice and had a way of explaining things in fun and interesting way. I ate the most delicious piece of meat I have had in a long time, and it was my first time eating alpaca as well. I would highly recommend this cooking class.

Wonderful experience in Cusco. Would recommend to anyone. I felt that it was a good value for the meals you get (ceviche, lomo saltado, cocktails). Plus we learned a lot about the culinary history of Peru. We especially loved our guide Alejandro who was very kind and entertaining.

i've been to quite a few cooking classes. and while practice makes better, i'd prefer not to have someone else review proper knife skills and have us spend 30-40 minutes chopping vegetables up. this cooking class actually had a designated sous chef!

YOUR IN PERU! spending this time actually learning about how the culture, climate, and landscape intersect was something i didnt know i was missing from other classes. i learned a great deal about peruvian cuisine, history of people/styles, agriculture, etc. i did do the actually cooking of several appetisers, and a main dish, but didnt waste time chopping onions (again). Instead spend learning and focusing on unique COOKING techniquies (instead of chopping techniques).

    absolutely worth every penny.

My family of four, including a 5 year old and 13 year old, loved this experience. We sampled various Peruvian fruits, made Pisco sour and Chilcano, and cooked a 2 course meal. Even my 5 year old was able to cook with the chefs assistance. Our ceviche, alpaca, and sides were delicious! Everyone was so nice, informative, and accommodating. As promised, they sent all the recipes via email so we could add Peruvian flavor to our meals at home. Highly recommend!

We had an amazing time with this class. We did it during COVID and while precautions were taken, it did not negatively impact the experience. Chef Jose was knowledgeable, attentive and made the class very enjoyable. We highly recommend taking this class.

We had a wonderful time with our chef instructor Alejandro. There were only four of us in the class so it was a very intimate experience. He gave us a great background of Peruvian food and we enjoyed seeing the different products in the small sample market that they have. We enjoyed making lomo saltado and ceviche as well as two pisco drinks. We also had two additional appetizers prepared by the chef so we were very well fed! Go hungry!

What a great experience in Cusco! Jose Luis was a gracious and engaging host who showed us how to cook ceviche, Lomo Saltado and the best Pisco sour! This was one of the highlights of our trip to Peru. Even if you don't think that you can cook, Jose Luis will lead you through it -- all while having a great time and learning a little about Peru's deep culinary history. Don't miss this!

We joined the class, guided by Cristina. It was absolutely an interesting and fun experience. We were explained about and shown (and tasted!) Peruvian cuisine staples (fruits, quinoa, potatoes…). Then we had the chance to cook our own ceviche and limo saltado, with in between a pisco tasting and Pisco-based cocktails making session.
Cristina was absolutely an amazing host, kind, knowledgeable and friendly. Recommended.

This class was a perfect mix of understanding how Peruvian cuisine has developed ( a little bit of history) and fabulous cooking and tasting . We did this as a family and we all really enjoyed it ,it was a perfect length of time and the content was really good. I also liked how particular the chef was about hygiene as we cooked and how we learnt about the market ingredients

The cooking class was very informational, they explain you a lot of the history of food in Peru and how it was evolved into what it is today. I have done other cooking classes before in the past and I feel like while they are explaining the history they can also have everyone prepare the ingredients needed for the plates that are done in class rather than have everything precut and ready for the class. In the class they mention that they don't take people to the market because it is not clean but the market in Cusco not only is in walkable distance to the class but also one of the cleanest markets I have seen in Central / South America. They have a market in the restaurant but it is for demonstration purposes only; I think they should make it a real market for the students to pick the ingredients for the class that way it adds more value to it. At the end of the class we all didn't feel like the price paid was worth it and they put too much emphasis on having all the bills super crips and they can't even have the regular wallet-middle-bill-rip. If they can't have "damaged" dollars then they should accept other payments methods other than cash.
