About the operator
Don’t take it from us – here’s what people have to say about this operator:
- 124mirkol0 contributionsThe experience of a lifetimeWe did a 3-day, 2-night trek to Machu Picchu (an expedited version of the classic 4-day hike) and, as challenging as the trek was, it was an unforgettable experience for my husband and me. The tour guide, Nico, was extremely caring, patient and knowledgeable, our chef was producing fantastic meals and our porters made sure our campsites were warm and comfortable and our belongings were well taken care of. We could not have asked for a better tour or a better crew! The views of Machu Picchu are breathtaking, but the hike up to that point fills your heart with wonder and tranquility, and you can’t help but feel a certain connection to the sublime mountains surrounding you and the spirits within watching over you.Written January 12, 2025
- heatheri4950 contributions100% RecommendThis trip was a character building experience. I think everyone should have an experience like this. The trail naturally has a some hardships but when you get to the top, the experience is so rewarding. The Inca trail reinforced some important life lessons for me. Nico was my guide and he is the absolute best. He was so knowledgeable about history, flora and fauna. It was such a treat to learn about the many ecosystems we experienced. At one point, during the trip, I became quite ill and Nico became my doctor and got me back to near perfect condition within a few hours. It could have been my worst day of the trip but it turned into the best day of my trip. I completely recommend Tierras Vivas and Nico. I travel a lot but not every travel experience is life changing but this definitely was. I will never be the same.Written December 29, 2024
- 314eliasj0 contributionsInca Trail to Machu Picchu Challenge 3-DayDid the 3-day challenge, with Tierra Vivas. Everything was smooth from booking to the initial trip and ending. Our guide Plinio, and portors were very friendly and helpful. The food prepared by the camping chef leoncio was delicious. Recommend!Written December 25, 2024
- P765MIarmandom0 contributionsCool experience the three day is a challenge.Leonceo was good cook and provided us with a wide range of traditional Peruvian food. Pelinio (PEPE) was our tour guide from beginning to end and was very knowledgeable.Written December 25, 2024
- Zak M0 contributionsUnforgettable and Impeccable Experience!Review: Inca Trail with Tierras Vivas Difficulty Day one of the trail was fairly easy, lasting only a couple of hours with just one small hill to climb. I expected the trail to be moderately difficult overall, but the second day was especially challenging. Climbing over Dead Woman’s Pass was tough due to the steep ascent and the high altitude, which left me gasping for air and struggling to get enough oxygen. Day three started with another ascent, which was also demanding, but the rest of the day was mostly downhill or flat, with small ups and downs. By this point, I was feeling quite tired, but it wasn’t unbearable. This section of the trail also offered a glimpse of fascinating Incan archaeological ruins, which were a highlight for me. Food The food on this hike was exceptional. Every day, we were served breakfast, lunch, and dinner, all freshly prepared and with a variety of options. The meals showcased local Peruvian cuisine, providing a great opportunity to try new dishes. A typical meal included soup before lunch and dinner, followed by 4 options of main courses. We were also treated to evening tea, coffee and hot chocolate with snacks before dinner, and occasionally small desserts. The portions were enormous, and I never felt hungry throughout the trek. Leoncio, the head chef, and his assistant did an incredible job. They were hardworking, friendly, and always went above and beyond to make us feel comfortable. The food was delicious every single day, and I can’t thank them enough for their dedication. Tour Guide Our tour guide, Ruben Huaman, was fantastic. He was incredibly knowledgeable, having grown up in the region, and spoke Spanish, Quechua, and English fluently. This unique ability allowed him to explain the cultural and linguistic significance of the towns, mountains, and archaeological sites along the way. Ruben was kind, approachable, and always helpful. He explained every step of the journey clearly and answered all our questions thoroughly. His great sense of humor added to the experience and lifted our spirits when we were feeling tired or deflated. His positive and friendly nature made a huge difference throughout the trek. Porters I want to give special mention to all eight porters, including the chefs. They were truly amazing to watch, carrying 20 to 35 kg packs through the mountains with ease, even at high altitudes where I struggled. The porters worked tirelessly to set up our campsites, tents, and everything else we needed. Their hard work and efficiency were astounding, and they made the trek much more comfortable. I can’t compliment them enough – they were absolutely fantastic. Views & Attractions Before this trek, I had completed the Lost City Trail in Colombia, and I wasn’t sure how the beauty of the Inca Trail would compare. Let me say that the mountain ranges, flora, and overall scenery were breathtaking. The towering peaks, rivers, lagoons, and constant presence of nature made this an unforgettable experience. Although we didn’t see much wildlife beyond a few hummingbirds, the Incan archaeological sites along the way were fascinating. These ancient ruins were stunning and added a rich historical context to the hike. Tour Group My only criticism of the experience isn’t about the tour itself, but the size of my group. There were only three people in our group, which made it harder to socialize and build connections. I was hoping for a larger group to foster more camaraderie and a sense of community. If you’re considering this trek, I’d recommend reaching out to the company to ensure you’re part of a group size that suits your preferences. Some people might enjoy the intimacy of a smaller group, but I personally feel a larger group would have enhanced my experience. Conclusion Overall, the experience was phenomenal. The scenery was gorgeous, the food was incredible, and the hard work of the porters and chefs was inspiring. Ruben, our guide, made the trip even more enjoyable with his expertise and positivity. Reaching Machu Picchu at the end of the trail was the icing on the cake – an awe-inspiring reward after an exhausting but rewarding journey. I wouldn’t change anything about the experience, except perhaps the group size. I highly recommend Tierras Vivas for the Inca Trail. Good luck, and enjoy this unforgettable adventure!Written December 14, 2024
- 808giggles0 contributionsEnjoyable tour with Tierras VivasThis review is for part of a 10-day tour that I took with Tierras Vivas as Tripadvisor doesn't have it listed. The 2-day MP tour was great. I received the train and bus tickets from their representative in Cusco and I met their representative (Sam) in Aguas Calientes the night before going to MP. My private guide at MP was Fred and I had an awesome time with him (5 stars for him). He was very knowledgeable, spoke English very well and offered to take numerous photos of me at the site since I was on my own. My tour was Circuit 2 and we used the 3 hours allotted for this tour. Fred mentioned that 5,000 persons are allowed at Machu Picchu per day; down from 9,000 before the pandemic so be sure you book your tickets online or have a tour company do it ahead of reaching the town if you have your heart set on visiting this wonderful site. Tierras Vivas booked the 10 am entry slot for me. I am not sure if you can request for an earlier time which I would have preferred. Same for the train-I would have preferred earlier times arriving to Aguas Calinentes and departing the town. I arrived at my hotel in Cusco ~ 830 pm as my train ride was booked for 422 pm and there was a slight delay during the train ride back to Ollantaytambo. I would also ask if you can choose which circuit you will be on since there are now 5 different ones. I lucked out and got Circuit 2 which was the one I wanted to do. You may end up on a circuit that may not be your 1st choice. The tour included assigned seating on the Vistadome train and 1 night stay at a hotel which I have a separate review of. Due to the crowd it is best to stand in line for your bus to MP 1 1/2 hours before your entry time to the site. There were people lined up 2 hours prior to their entry time. The plus side is the staff who checks your ticket and passport will stamp your ticket with the MP stamp (which you can also get at the IPeru office near the main square and onsite at MP). The line to catch the bus back into town was also very long and on a 1st come 1st serve bases. Be sure to allow enough time to catch your train back.Written December 3, 2024
- S480HZeliasd0 contributionsGreat experience but over-pricedGood and responsive prior to departure. Good on admin (all tickets organized before departure), and good guide (Pepe). The hike is amazing and the views are spectacular, so the trip will always be a great memory. However, over charged for what we got… for example charged $80 to climb Huayna Pichu, when the added cost is 30 (the normal entrance is already included in original price). We also ate at restaurants far from main strip (next to train tracks) with average food, and stayed in hotel with no AC and no hot shower (!!!) The tour operator should reconsider the value for money they provide and future travelers should consider negotiating.Written November 27, 2024
- fredwE8400VB0 contributionsOverwhelming, majestic nature, challenging, out of this world...This was the best ever...! I got the chance to see (and hear about) wonderful Peruvian landscapes and Inca monuments in good company, with thé best guide ( Ruben) and the wonderful Nicolas from Germany.... I could sing all day without anyone complaining and was challenged to do my best in this overwhelning nature. We had the best food and enjoyed the company of the team... Despite the sometimes possibly depressing weather we kept our spirits up and ended joyfully together at Machu Picchu!!! Thank you all!Written November 20, 2024
- Llomoptz0 contributionsReliable and InformativeWe had a good experience with Tierras Vivas. They took care of all the details of our trip and explained everything clearly. The only surprise was that we were the only people in our group, so we basically had a custom tour of the Inca Trail and Machu Picchu. Our guide, Nico, was very informative and supportive, and could answer any of questions on topics ranging from modern life in Peru to botany, architecture, and history. I would highly recommend this company.Written November 18, 2024

- Footprints7226800 contributionsFantastic tour, well organised, knowledgeable guide, helpful with translations, allergy needs met.An unforgettable experience and a fantastic way to explore Machu Picchu while learning about its rich history. Everything was seamless and it took away a lot of the stress of having to organise all the transfers and entry tickets ourselves seperately. Our tour guide, Ruben was incredibly knowledgeable and helpful. We had so many questions, and he always provided insightful answers. He also went above and beyond by translating for us, especially in restaurants where my peanut allergy was a concern. Plus, he generously let me use one of his hiking poles during the trek—thank you, Ruben!Written November 4, 2024

What an incredible experience. The Salkantay route is stunning and it was made even better by our guide Pepe (Luis). He spoke excellent English, and was a really genuine person to be around. Clearly passionate about the outdoors and Inca history, Pepe was also always incredibly clear about our plans for the day and attentive to our interests and needs. A fantastic tour guide around Machu Piccu too.
A very professional operation overall- bus from hostel was comfy, tents and camping equipment were very good quality, food too on the way was excellent. It would’ve been a lot harder without three tasty and filling meals every day! Can’t imagine how one would improve the trip.

I did the tour with my friends this august. I really enjoyed the tour. We had a good time with the crew, consisting of the guide Nico, the cook and the assistant. Nico also was happy to organise some extra wishes for us, like for example asking the cook to prepare the famous cui (guinepig) for us. Nico is a professional guide who studied for a couple of years the history of the incas and is himself a descendent of the incas. He will tell you a lot about the myths and history of the incas. Also he helps you a lot with managing the height and has some tricks up his sleeve against altitude sickness.
If you are used to hicking from times to times and enjoy amazing views then this is the right tour for you.

Four lovely days with high mountains on the first day, then jungle on the second day. Long hike on the third day, which can optionally be shortened by taking the train. Machu Picchu is also good on the fourth day. Hikes are always easy to do, the altitude is difficult at the beginning of the tour, but it gets over quickly.

If there’s any review you read, let it be this one! To preface: the Salkantay trek is the perfect combination of highly unique, challenging, and beautiful. You will embark on a journey where you’ll encounter several different environments, climates, views, and people.
Disclaimer: we did the Salkantay trek as 3 days and 2 nights, not 4 & 3.
Compared to the Inca trail, you’ll trek between two mountains (one of which is a magestic glacier) for the first leg of the hike. Then it’s a downhill (and for the most part, flat) hike to small towns and eventually, Aguas Calientes. Scenic views everywhere, completely immersed in nature and totally amazing. THAT SAID, this trek is VERY challenging to accomplish in 3 days time! Even if you are very fit and in shape! The altitude is what makes the journey challenging.
My boyfriend and I recently completed the 3 day trek (private tour) and while it was worth everything, I wish we had known how hard it was going to be when we booked it. It took a big mental and physical toll on our bodies.
The Salkantay trek is also offered in 4 or 5 day journeys (which I would personally recommend post trip) - but should you choose the 3 day, be warned that the first day is the MOST trying. We hiked 16 miles in total the first day, half of which were uphill at altitudes ranging between 10-15K feet above sea level.
The last 4 miles were hiked on downhill, rugged terrain in the dark, which was a bit of a surprise (and a little scary) but also made our journey fun and adventurous. The following 2 days are MUCH easier after the first.
You will hike mostly flat terrain and if you’re too tired, you can always opt in for a car ride instead. The first day is by far the most difficult because the mileage you hike is normally completed in 2 days time. Again, the altitude must be kept in mind.
This all said - the best part of our trek was our guide, Alibeth. Alibeth was AMAZING, and amazing does not even sum it up. She made us feel SO safe and cared for during our trek, even during the hardest moments.
She also was enthusiastic enough to practice Spanish with us along the way and teach us about Peruvian culture. We really enjoyed our time with her and not enough can be said about her incredible character. She offered a glimpse into Cusco native life and shared so much valuable information with us along the way.
When we reached Machu Picchu, Alibeth gave us a unique tour of the site that included invaluable pictures with llamas and scenic views. She knew where all the best places were to take pictures and to visit. Not to mention, pre-Machu Picchu she made sure all of our accommodations were taken care of.
We stayed in a very nice hotel the night before and had a really nice dinner with her. Basically, we loved her! The entire trek, Alibeth was fully attentive to all of our needs, I would not have survived without her!! Having a great guide is essential.
I also want to mention how incredible the rest of the tour staff were, including our cook (Teacher). The food was incredible the entire time and we savored every meal. The staff went above and beyond to ensure we were super comfortable and fed.
Our point of contact for scheduling the trip was Liz, she answered every question we had and was super helpful as well.
Summed up: do the Salkantay trek!!! It’s beautiful and you will have an awesome and personal experience with Peruvian nature (as opposed to the very crowded Inca Trail). Prepare adequately and know what you’re getting into.

It’s a jungle trying to find the right tour (company) that suits your wishes and expectations to visit Machu Picchu.
The main reason my girlfriend and I chose Tierras Vivas was that we wanted to do the Salkantay trek as a 4 days tour, but also include Humantay lake (which is normally only on a 5 days tour). Rafael from Tierras Vivas was extremely helpful, replying to our questions very patiently, quickly and pragmatically. Although it was only the two of us, Tierras Vivas did not transfer us to another company (which seems to be a regular problem), so we were very (!) lucky and ended up having the whole tour for the two of us. Another main reason was that Tierras Vivas states on it’s website that tour guides, porters, chefs etc are paid fair wages, animals aren’t exploited and they provide sustainable tourism. Although we had no real means to verify this ourselves, we had the impression that this might well be true. Further, we are both vegetarian and the food provided on the trek was amazing (in particular with regard to variety and quantity).
The Salkantay trek itself was an amazing experience! However, when choosing your trek, do not only think of the beautiful pictures (which are all exactly as displayed, the landscape is unreal…). The Salkantay trek is hard. The Salkantay trek in 4 days including Humantay lake is very (!) hard, since you practically do most of days 1 and 2 of the 5 days tour in the first day. For us this meant 19 km hiking with 1,300 m elevation gain, going up to a max of 4,600 m above sea level (this is very challenging). The reward was an absolutely stunning view of Salkantay mountain! Days 2-4 were much more relaxed hiking and we could, therefore, enjoy the spectacular scenery even more. We also did the hot springs and a zip line ride on days 2 and 3 respectively. The grande finale at Machu Picchu was absolutely stunning and a real life time memory, especially as we were so so lucky with the weather (end of March).
Our tour guide Wilian must be singled out here. I have done some tours in my lifetime, but Wilian was hands down the BEST tour guide I have EVER experienced. Wilian was beyond forthcoming with any wishes or questions we had. Not only can Wilian share his immense knowledge of Inca and Peruvian history, culture, geography, wildlife and plants with you, but he also has a personal passion to show you all of this in a way that makes you feel you are talking to a dear friend who is happy to share intimate aspects of his culture with you. Further, Wilian does not only go the extra mile, he circles earth to make sure that your long awaited holiday is filled with wonderful memories that you will never forget. Bonus points: Wilian is an insanely good photographer and extremely dedicated to provide you with absolutely great pictures! Also, he seems to know every second person working in the general area and is, therefore, more than capable when it comes to looking for flexible solutions for spontaneous ideas, wishes, you name it. I can only hope you are as lucky as we were with Wilian on any tour you book!

This trek was excellent. We saw impressive and unique landscapes such as the Humantay Lake, the Salkantay Glacier, the Jungle and Machu Picchu!
Our guide was the best. His name is Rosbelt. He was truly attentive to us, he always made sure the pace of the trek was working for us and he made this challenge an unforgettable memory we will have of Perù. Rosbelt's explanations in Machu Picchu especially were incredibly interesting. He gave us information you would not find anywhere else, which made the experience unique.
The great thing about this trek is you get to every place before all of the crowds - which really changes the experience and differentiates Flashpackers!
The team we had on the Salkantay was great: Rosbelt as a guide, Aurelio as a chef (the food was truly delicious) and Antonio as an arriero. The team made this experience unique. We did not have to worry about a thing - we just enjoyed the journey.
I would definitely recommend this trip with Flashpackers and specifically with Rosbelt.
Overall, Flashpackers were great - Abel, the manager in Cusco is really the best at making sure customers are happy. I definitely advise this trip with Flashpackers!

Danny our guide was very enthusiastic and passionate about the whole trek and he’s extensive Inca knowledge was astounding.
The trek was extremely challenging, particularly the first day, but the landscapes were amazing. Highly recommended using hiking poles!
We had a delicious 3 course meal for lunch and dinner each day, curiously of the chefs!
We booked through a touring company (tour radar) this made contacting Tierras Vivas challenging.

Overall the trek is worth it, great views and a great way to arrive at Machu Picchu. With that said a few things: The trail is very busy, you are never alone, but instead a constant line of people. You vary from walking on a dirt road which I did not like to being on a trail which I loved. I really enjoyed the trek through the jungle where we were on a trail. The accommodations are huts, and rooms rather than tenting. The food is mostly carbs on the bland side but filling. The gear they loaned us was crap, the air mattress leaked, the sleeping bags kept you warm but were way past their prime. The final night was at a nice hotel in Machu Picchu, great to get wifi and a nice shower! Let me qualify that I am a mountaineer, having summited over a 100 peaks including Mt Rainier 14.4K 7 times by 6 routes, so I have excellent gear and I am use to altitude and hiking etc. I admit this is really not my style I really do not like to be guided, I normally lead climbs, and rough it, where as this was more holding you hand. Nonetheless I recommend it, my comments are to ensure you know what you are getting into. Finally anyone in reasonable shape can complete this.

Why is this priced at $550 when it is the exact trek as kbtourstravel. -salkantay-trek/salkantay-machupicchu-4-days/ which is priced at $275? In fact KBS is the ultimate tour guide. SKIP Trip Advisor's mark up and book with them directly
