Stop At: Cotopaxi National Park, Ecuador

We begin this adventure driving south on the pan American highway for about 2 hours, this area is known as The Avenue of Volcanoes, it was named like this by the famous German Explorer Alexander Vond Humboldt, on the way you might be able to enjoy views of volcanoes like Cayambe, Antisana, Pichincha, Illinizas,

Pasochoa and Corazon.

Once we enter the park we will drive on the high alpine line, and we will learn from our local guide about the flora and fauna of the Paramo Ecosystem, along the road we will cross a pine tree forest and with some luck you could spot a white tail deer.

The biking experience will start at 13000 feet of elevation and will take place on a dirt road surrounded by the remains of the last eruption of Cotopaxi that was about 140 years ago, we will see wild horses and bulls along the road, and later we will ride on a fun single track all the way to the Pucara Inca Ruins, here our guides will prepare some delicious lunch for you. Then in the afternoon we will continue riding for about 1 hour to the Hacienda Santa Ana.

Biking Distance.- 20 miles ( 32 Km)

Elevation Gain.- 300 feet ( 91 m)

Wow! More than I expected.
This was my second adventure trip with the same group of four. We traveled with our guide Christian and driver Jose and nine other new friends. Christian and Jose did an excellent job of making us all comfortable with the trip and our co-travelers. Accommodations were first class, and none of the important details were overlooked. We had a great time getting off of the beaten path and exploring all that Ecuador has to offer. The whitewater rafting was a personal favorite for me, along with our stay at the lodge in the Amazon - with wonderful hosts! I would recommend taking some time to train and prepare, as the elevation can make what sounds easy a little harder! The planning list was very helpful for this fun-filled adventure. I would travel with Jose and Christian anytime!

A truly amazing holiday
Everyone who enjoys experiencing different cultures and seeing unique wildlife in its unspoilt natural surroundings should look to go on the Ecuador and Galapagos islands 12 night escorted tour run by Adventure Journeys. Our holiday was made even more enjoyable thanks to our fabulously knowledgeable tour guide Paul Aguilar. He is able to tell you so much about the places you visit and areas you drive through. He knows where to stop so you can get such lovely photos of the surroundings as well as where to get some lovely local delicacies to try. We started off in the Galapagos and the islands Santa Cruz and San Cristobal showed us all the creatures we had hoped to see including blue footed boobies, manta rays, sea lions, iguanas, giant tortoises, and lizards. Back on the mainland we explored Quito including its old town as well as the cable car up the mountain which gave terrific views over Quito. We then moved on to Mindo into the cloud forest to see a variety of humming birds at close quarters. It was then on to Otavalo for its local crafts and a night in a lovely old Hacienda. It was then onto Papallacta for a night in the thermal pools. Our tour guide Paul regularly suggested the 12 members of our group went out together in the evening to eat at local places he knew served nice local food but that was not too expensive. He was keen to ensure our food orders were taken correctly. Paul is the ideal guide you need on this type of holiday as he added so much to our holiday experience.

Adventure of a lifetime
Our tour with guide Christian and driver Jose was the adventure of a lifetime. The trekking on the mountain was beautiful, the canyoning in the waterfalls was awesome, the white water rafting was incredible. I can not think of a single activity that I didn’t enjoy. Christian is fluent in English, very knowledgeable about Ecuador’s ecosystems, terrain and culture. He made this trip wonderful with his enthusiasm and passion for nature. If you’re not afraid to try new activities, if you like a day filled with singing on the bus, seeing amazing views of mountains, volcanoes & jungles & learning about Ecuador, this trip is for you.

Heaven on earth.
This tour was wonderful from start to finish. In the words of our tour guide Paul, we were travelling in the path of Angels. The activities were many and varied the photo opportunities seemed endless, and as the tour progressed l was amazed at the amount of planning and attention to detail that was a part of the Galapogos experience. The structure of the tour meant that our tour guide, Paul, was able to add his own input, which was considerable. The choice of hotels was good, plenty of luxury if you wanted it, (or had time to persue..... massages etc) however we found that an early to bed was needed ready for each new day's itinery. Transported in a minibus with a most competent driver, Andreas,(he looked about 15) ,but was much older! And an only one of the highlights of the tour. Sitting next to a blue footed Boobie, was an extreme pleasure, (they're so cute) , was another wonderful moment. It was an honour to listen to Maurice at the Charles Darwin centre, a guide who had been at these forefront of the ecological work that has been going on for many years. Oh my!!! I wish I was back there!!!! Such memories!! Lynda and I will remember this forever.

Discover Ecuador and the Galapagos.
We have just come to the end of two week tour of astonishing diversity and interest. We started off in the Galapagos with our guide and tour leader, Paul, who is a mine of information and a genius at making all go smoothly. We made several trips on the islands of Santa Cruz and San Cristobal and saw blue footed boobies, sea lions and giant tortoises - animals so unworried by humans that we were able to get really close to them, which gave ample opportunity for photos. Back on the mainland we explored Quito before moving on to Mindo in the cloud forest - a paradise for hummingbirds and photographers. We then moved on to Otavalo to revel in the local craft market and to Cotacachi to visit the leather shops. The Cotacachi Cayapas ecological reserve, with a hike along the rim of the Cuicocha and a boat ride to the centre of the crater to get closer to the volcanic domes, followed. Our itinerary was long so I am giving only a taste of the first part of it. Throughout the whole trip we were guided by Paul with efficiency and unfailing good humour. He added very considerably to our enjoyment of all we saw with enthusiastic commentary. I highly recommend this trip as an excellent way of getting to know more about the Galapagos and Ecuador :-)

Great trip and guides
We came from Minnesota for an adventure and we were not disappointed. Our tour guide, Christian, did a wonderful job and made it fun for everyone on our tour. We hiked 2 days, went mountain biking, zip lining, canyoning, white water rafting. We visited some beautiful places like the lagoons, hot springs, and the Amazon. The accommodations were excellent. If you’re a person who likes to be on the go, and you’re not afraid of trying new things, I would highly suggest booking this trip, and ask for Christian and Jose.

The food was tasty and plentiful with local dishes added. Our guide Daniel was the best! Extremely knowledgeable with enthusiasm. He made the trip special with all of the information about Ecuador he provided. Andrew our driver was safe and very helpful. These two guys made our trip so very special! Great Travel Company
I don’t usually write reviews, but decided to write a review for Adventure Journeys because I traveled solo with them and am a young woman, which can make traveling alone scary, but I had a great experience traveling with AJ and felt safe the whole time I was in their hands. I booked my own flights in and out of Ecuador and took a taxi from the airport to the first hotel ($25 vs. $65 booking with AJ), but the rest of my travel while I was there was arranged by AJ and went very smoothly. All of the guides/activity leaders I had were knowledgeable and friendly and the activities (I was on the Active Mainland/Galapagos) were well thought out. There was at least one planned physical activity every day except my travel day to the Galápagos which takes all day. AJ was a little pricier than some of the other options I saw, but they had the most activities and all the hotels I stayed at were very nice. The activities included hiking, biking, canyoning (my favorite activity), rafting (second favorite), kayaking, and snorkeling. I had a lot of fun and this was easily one of my favorite vacations I have taken because there was so much variety in all of the activities. Special shout out to Fatima who was my guide in mainland Ecuador and was so hospitable. She really went above and beyond making sure I was comfortable and sharing a lot of information about the culture of Ecuador and the areas we visited. I would definitely travel with AJ again.

Loved
I actually consulted TripAdvisor before deciding on this trip and want to pay it forward. We had a small group of 5 trekkers, all half our age. The treks were diverse and beautiful and when my husband and I found certain parts to challenging, Chritian our guide found some alternative routes that were just as enjoyable. It you like being outdoors and can manage moderate level trekking, just go. Ecuador is a beautiful and beautifully diverse country well worth the visit. Food was good too and if you dare, you can zipline safely across a canyon headfirst..probably the coolest think I did.

An experience of a lifetime!
This is an amazing company! I just finished the Avenue of the Volcanoes trip and I cannot say enough good things about the activities or accommodations of the trip, the company, the guide, the driver or any one we interacted with along the way. I am already planning to go back to Ecuador with this company and am looking into trips with them in other countries as well. The customer service, organization, and communication of this company was always better than expected. The philosophy of this company was also something I also greatly appreciated and have not found in other companies (i.e. their eco friendly, plastic and waste free approach in addition to their life is an adventure, support for local and immerse in the culture approach). Our guide, Christian, was the best guide I've ever interacted with (and I've interacted with many over the 22 countries I've been to). He was extremely knowledgeable about all aspects of Ecuador whether it was an area we were currently in or not. Additionally, he was very professional and made accommodations for all skills levels in our group while still making sure that everyone involved had the level of challenge they wanted and ensuring a good time was had by all. We had one day where the road to where we were going was unassailable and Christian was able to easily develop and provide an exceptional alternative plan where you never would have even known it was a "plan B". The information provided (day to day activity guide and explanation of the trail and elevation gain along with the packing list) prior to the trip was very helpful. I felt that I knew exactly what to expect and that I was prepared with the right gear and clothing for every day. The treks themselves were amazing. The order in which they do the treks sets you up for success and acclimates you appropriately. I'd never been to Ecuador but heard it was beautiful. What I saw while trekking was far superior to "beautiful". The treks are challenging but very doable. I would recommend that those planning to do this trip be in shape and have a general understanding or have completed a few long hikes that include elevation gain (6+ miles). During the treks and other activities, I never felt unsafe. Christian was very attentive to safety, ensured everyone was ok along the way, assisted those that needed a little extra attention during the treks, and ensured those who needed a little less assistance were taken care of as well. I can't say enough about how pleased I was with this trip, the activities, the company, the guide, everything! I can't wait to return soon!

Awesome
Paul our guide was ‘sensational’ to say the least. We were a couple, and had family with two teenage boys to cope with, and a newly married couple on honeymoon. Absolutely everything ran like clockwork, & supremely smooth. Transport, food, various activities with & without equipment, even time for our own solitude & all with a great sense of humor. When a time was quoted for the following day, Paul would arrive 5 mins before. He got us to pretty much all the wildlife & sealife we could have wished for. Paul made this trip unforgettable in every sense.

Amazing Trek with a Phenomenal Guide
I had an absolutely fabulous time with Daniel of AJ tours leading the trek through the avenue of volcanoes. Not only were all of the hikes fun (challenging but completely doable) and the views beautiful, Daniel enthusiastically explained to us the history of Ecuador and how the landscape and culture evolved. He gave us the opportunity to meet locals which was a really nice touch. Our driver Andrew navigated the mountain roads smoothly and always greeted us with a smile. All of the meals (picnic lunches and at restaurants) we delicious and the accommodations were extremely comfortable and in some instances better than I expected - especially since we were in some pretty remote areas. I couldn’t have asked for a better first time in Ecuador (and South America)!

Adventure of a lifetime!
I recently completed the 8-Day Ecuador Multisport trip with my wife and 2 boys (ages 10 and 12). It was a fun, exciting adventure from start to finish, and the group that we were with (aka "our family") was great! Our guide, Paul, and our driver, Jose (aka Joselito!) both went above and beyond from start to finish to make my family and me comfortable, and the entire trip an outstanding experience. Paul was a wealth of information and an incredible resource to have leading our group. To pack so much into such a short period is understandably a challenge, but Paul and Jose did a fantastic job. One necessary "evil" of doing so much in a short period of time is that it required quite a bit of time on the bus, but Paul's "surprises" did a great job of breaking up the trips, and the rest of the group did a great job of keeping the atmosphere fun and upbeat. I highly recommend this trip for anyone looking for a fun, action-packed way to experience Ecuador and it's amazing natural beauty!

Incredible tour with Adventure Journeys
Just finished an amazing tour with Adventure Journeys on the 8 day trekking the avenue of volcanoes. Our tour guide Daniel was incredibly knowledgeable and I learned a ton from him about the history of Ecuador and the current state of the country in addition to the ecology of all we saw. The hiking was of beautiful scenery - moderate to challenging but totally doable for anyone that's done some good hiking in the past. The hotels were all very nice and the food was tasty. Our driver Andrew was wonderful as well. Would fully recommend this trip and ask for Daniel as your guide!
