Nice Snow and Lagoon views, nice tour guide Santiago (provide a lot of infos and best photo spots) and nice driver Mario (the funniest). Really enjoyed this tour.

We were originally booked on to the Cajon Del Maipo tour but received an email the day before stating that due to safety issues the tour was unable to go ahead. We were offered a full refund or the option of
The Portillo tour instead.
The lagoon and the mountains were stunning and gave good photo opportunities. The guide was good and made the day a lot better than it could have been with the knowledge and information he shared.
It seemed to be a long day in mini van for not a lot of gain. We spent a lot of time at stops along the way which all seemed rather unnecessary; buying snow gear, getting coffee and then a place for lunch that only did a buffet (not food everyone will eat).

Overall the day was ok but not something I would recommend as a must do whilst you are in Chile. If we could chose again we would take a refund instead.

Recommendations:
- Pack warm and cool clothing depending on time of year (Very different in the mountain compared to Santiago).
- Don't buy any snow gear - you don’t need it!
- Take your own lunch and water, it is more than enough.

Easy and relatively cheap way to visit the beautiful ski resort of Portillo. If you're a tourist who doesn't have access to a car, this is probably one of the best ways to see Portillo, as it is impossible to get to via public transportation.
Pick up and drop off was relatively easy; however don't expect to be picked up at the exact time they tell you (we waited around 20 minutes). Don't rent the ski clothes they offer on the way up; a warm jacket, sweats, and tennis shoes are fine for this trip since you only walk from the van to the hotel and back.
To be transparent, don't expect a classic tour - think of this only as a means to visit one of the most remote and beautiful ski resorts in the world at a decent price.

We originally booked the Maipo tour but was emailed 1 day prior to advise that the route had been closed to tourists due to an accident. They then offered us the Portillo tour instead, claiming that it was twice the cost and we would still see lots of mountains.

The first stop was to the snow clothing hire shop. We were convinced it was going to be a lot colder and the tour guide recommended that we dress accordingly. Our hire came to a total of $86aud for pants, gloves and snow boots for 2 people. Only to find out when we arrived to the mountain that they were not necessary.

We then were taken to a snow area on the side of the highway to play in the snow. We were told that the ski resort would be too crowded and this would be a good time to get photos etc.

As most of the bus was from Brazil, our tour guide spoke mostly in Portuguese, translating to English every now and then. However when we arrived to the ski resort at midday, our understanding was that we were to spend and hour and a half at the resort and have lunch at the restaurant. The guide took a list of names who were wanting to go to the restaurant as we were told that the hotel only wanted paying customers at the resort.

The food was terrible and overpriced. We paid $70aud for 2 meals and the meat was so over cooked, it could be cut or chewed. This was quite disappointing considering how much we paid and even though we bought lunch, we were not allowed to use the bathrooms. We were told that these were for hotel guests only.

The resort is a bit of let down also, there’s not much to do, other than take photos in one designated area for tourists.

When we arrived back to the bus, we were told that we would drive for another hour and half to take back the snow gear and then have lunch! We approached the driver and told him we thought he asked us to have lunch here. There was another English speaking person on the bus and she too had lunch at the resort from the guides instructions. Clearly something was lost in translation.

The food at the lunch spot was half the price too and looked much more appetising. We were very disappointed.

Overall I would not recommend this tour to anyone. It was boring and we ended up paying more on the day then we did the tour cost.

Stopped at 7:50am for buffet breakfast half way for 40min; carpark had around 15 to 20 mini-busses; restaurant only has limited food type (buffet or coffee) quality was less than average, mostly cold food ; after we returned to vehicle at 8:30am , they said we had another 20min to walk around the carpark. 9:00 am, at this stage, carpark had only few mini-busses left and we are still here , driver and guide are missing in action. MTO decided to transfer one more person to our tour.
Salvador, the tour guide, started talking to try to gain additional time. He then received a message from his company to wait until 9:15am , so far stop started at 7:50am.
Salto del soldado , great spot but it does not have a protection barrier and it is full of rubbish.
Portillo ski resort is an small complex, where non-guests have limited mobility options, many areas are reserved for resort guests (picture 2). For example, toilets are avaliable in a container sitting on the carpark.these toilets did not smell good at all, also the user needs to pay $500 (ref picture 3)
We managed to get an spot on the lagoon viewing area of the Inca lagoon , there were a lot of tourists for such an small space. Time at this location 1:15 hrs.
Our last stop on the snow was a rubbish dump with plastic (ref picture 4)
Hotel guard at the front door makes sure only people with intention to buy something visit the hotel, a good way to feel unwelcome.
Lunch at the same place where we stopped for breakfast , this time a more well- prepared lunch incl wine for $7500.
Only two bathroom for about 40 women.
