- ariovaldoj5380 contributionsBreathtaking Day at Cajón del MaipoMy trip to Cajón del Maipo was absolutely unforgettable! The scenic beauty of the Andes mountains was beyond what words can describe. Our guide was incredibly knowledgeable and passionate, sharing fascinating insights about the area’s geology, history, and wildlife. The landscapes were mesmerizing, from the towering peaks to the turquoise waters of the reservoir. We stopped at several viewpoints, each more stunning than the last, offering plenty of photo opportunities. The fresh mountain air and the peacefulness of nature made this a perfect escape from the city. The highlight was definitely the Embalse El Yeso, a pristine reservoir with crystal-clear waters nestled between the mountains. Our group enjoyed a delicious picnic surrounded by this incredible scenery, which added to the overall experience. Whether you're an outdoor enthusiast or just looking for a beautiful day trip from Santiago, Cajón del Maipo is a must-visit. I highly recommend this tour for anyone wanting to immerse themselves in Chile's natural beauty!!Written September 16, 2024

- Trev L0 contributionsAvoid this tourBooked this tour two days before we were to go. They said we'll receive an email confirming pickup time 21.30 day before. So when no email arrived I was trying to contact MTO tours but no answer, called the vivitar help line ( who TripAdvisor booked through) and they were very helpful to tell me my booking was confirmed ( which I knew) and more importantly the pickup time was 8 am. So next morning no one showed up . Frustrated and angry we waited an hour then tried to contact MTO tours again and no answer so contact vivitar and they tried to contact the tour operator too and no answer. After 2 hours we gave up and organised a credit which hopefully was promised to arrive in 7 days. We read the reviews and there were lots of 1 stars but we gave them the benefit of doubt. How wrong were we. Avoid at all cost to save frustration and valuable holiday time.Written September 11, 2024

It was an early start, our hotel pickup was 6.40am but the overall experience was excellent. Christian was our guide and driver and he looked after us extremely well. Even though some of the roads in the Andes, particulacy on the last lap to the reservoir are hairy, at no time did I feel unsafe. The views in the mountains are spectacular and once reaching the reservoir, it is awesome. The value for money was first class and there were nice touches such as a picnic of cheese and meats, crisps, nuts, crackers and a glass or two of 'Concho Y Toro' red wine. The journey back was broken up well with a stop for the picnic, a visit to a chocolate shop where they serve delicious ice cream and a town stop for a few drinks and light lunch/snack. We enjoyed every minute of our experience today at a very reasonable cost and led by a first class guide/driver, who was also a very considerate person. A great day, thank you!

We originally booked the trip to Cajon del Maipo, but were reassigned to the Portillo tour. They said it was because Cajon was closed due to an accident, but after investigating with some travel angencies, we found out that it was not true and that they do this because it’s not cost effective to take a small group to Cajon. We decided to go anyways, and the place was nice enough, the guide was ok (not the best I’ve had, but fine) and the van was conforable enough too (very ok driver). However, they promised small groups of Max 8 people, and we were 16... it wasn’t an amazing experience, it was only ok. So if you’re looking for something great, this is not it.

Our guide Roxana was amazing - really friendly and great English. However, I found this trip to be slightly random. We went to San Jose de Maipo yet there was nothing to do there except use an ATM. I feel as though driving through it would have been more than enough. Then we went to a chocolate shop (which I HIGHLY recommend purchasing from) but the bonbon flavours did not stand out particularly - rather that the chocolate itself was delicious. The walk at the Yeso reservoir was beautiful albeit short - around 2km (30 minutes) in total including the time we took to take pictures. We were not warned about the ground condition so I recommend wellies / walking shoes or boots if you have them so you don’t waste money on rentals. Picnic was small but the wine was lovely so I’d just recommend taking snacks if you have a big appetite like me. Also to be noted that from pick up to drop off this tour lasted around 12 hours so I highly recommend dedicating the full day to it as we did. Highly recommend but those are just things to bear in mind

After leaving the hotel at 6:20 in the morning we picked some other guests and drove with a stop to the beautiful lake in 2500m above ground. There we had a picknick with wine and cheese and salami. We also saw a waterfall and a glacier in the distance. On the way back we stopped in the Chocolate house where we bought delicious ice cream. After an other stop we returned to Santiago. Van, Driver and guide were great

This tour is great and such an awesome value!
Started out with an early pickup from my hotel, picked up the rest of the group throughout the city, then headed out on the road. The journey is pretty long, so be prepared for that. We stopped about halfway there and grabbed some breakfast and coffee, then continued on to Tinoco Tunnel, a cool experience at a place with a really dark past.
We then headed up the mountain a bit where the roads get very narrow, we had an excellent tour guide and driver, Jaime, who I felt completely safe and confident with.
After reaching the Embalse, we were allowed a lot of time to take pictures, soak up the environment, and enjoy the breathtaking views. We then had a very nice picnic with wine and cheese and crackers, stopped off at a chocolate shop for some much needed gelato on the hot day, and then headed back to the city to drop everyone off.
This isn’t a history-rich tour, our guide was great at giving us occasional tidbits of information and answered any questions we had, but the main purpose of this was to get to the location and enjoy the sights. A lot of time is spent in the van, so just be ready for that.
One big critique and the main reason I didn’t rate 5 stars:
- The pickup process could be a lot more streamlined. While I enjoy the convenience of a hotel pickup, we could have all easily met up at one location in the city and saved a lot of time in the van. I was the first person picked up and the last person dropped off so I had a unique experience in that sense, but it still seems a bit excessive to drive to 7 different hotels in addition to the actual long journey to the embalse.
I would totally recommend this experience to solo travelers and even bigger groups, the pictures do not do justice to this place, it was really amazing seeing it in person and a wonderful day trip to end my stay in Santiago.

Our trip to Embalse del Yeso was simply wonderful!
Starting with the guide Andres, who was very punctual, picking us up at our accommodation exactly at the agreed time. Furthermore, he is very friendly and playful, making the experience even more pleasant.
Although we were in a group with speakers of both Portuguese and Spanish, there was no problem understanding the instructions and interesting facts told by the guide, as he can communicate well in both languages.
As for the itinerary itself, it is very good, with the highlight being the visit to the Embalse del Yeso. Even though it wasn't completely covered in snow when we visited, the landscape is fantastic, making for great memories and photographs of the place.
The itinerary also included lunch at an all-you-can-eat buffet restaurant in San José del Maipo, paid separately. In this restaurant, there is also a mini zoo, where you can see animals such as llamas, deer, horses, peacocks, cockatiels, parakeets and pheasants.
We also visited an artisanal chocolate shop, which is a good place to buy souvenirs.
Finally, we had a nice picnic and took a group photo before returning to Santiago.
I highly recommend the tour!

I booked ths trip to Cajon del Maipo because it was the keast exoensive one and they offered tours in English with a hotel pick up. I was sent a message on wattsup with the pick up time and the driver made arrangements to meet at my hotel. I was the first one to be picked up and the driver was half and hour late. The scheduled pick up was 6:10 and he arrived around 6:40. That being said Diego was very pleasant and was fluent in Spanish and proficient in Portuguese and English.
The trip to the canyon takes around 2 hours and it took another 45 minutes to collect all the other passengers.
We stopped at a hiking equipment rental and I rented some boots because I did not want to get my new sneakers dirty. Boots are highly recommended if it is snowing. The canyon itself is lovely and we spent around 2 hours there including the pinic, which really was just a collection of snacks and salami with some wine but there were no complaints from the guests. Diego maintained good spirits throughout and got everyone back safely. We did stop at the "chocolate house" which is a chocolate shop on the way back. I had seen delicious icecream and authentic hot chocolate. In reality we spent more time in transit and picking up/dropping off guests than at the canyon but for $45 CAD, I thought the experience was pretty good.

The highlight of the trip was the views of the Andes and the glacial lake but the rest was a huge disappointment. Starting with the van, which had dirty windows and few shocks so it was a very bumpy ride. The pickup was quite late, and the host did not respond to texts on the time of arrival. The "picnic" should be been described as a light snack, even though it was served at noon and there were no options for lunch. The description promised a glass of wine, but the wine ran out before everyone had some and not everyone was drinking. There was no water available on the van and was told there was no where to get it. Portosans were locked at one location, and out of order at another, and when I asked to stop the guide wasn't sure if we could. I have been delighted with Viatour on my other experiences and this one just didn't meet that standard.

I booked a small group tour and there were 16. The guide warned that it was going to be very cold at the lake inducing people to rent unnecessary gear at the first stop. The restaurant where we stopped for lunch was a rip off. The buffet was overpriced, particularly for a vegetarian. Rice, beans and a little bit of salad was not worth$16. No drinks were in my for that price, not even water. Dessert was extra too. The other three stops were not anticipated and took longer than they should have.

Pros: Driver was great. Tour guide was pleasant. View at reservoir was spectacular. Chocolate house was really "sweet".
Cons: p/u time was send via whatsap instead of email previously used for communications with me. Their email a few days prior had informed me to check my email, not whatsap. Their website should have recommended wearing hiking boots. Instead the van stopped at a rental place and strongly advised us to rent boots at $8000 pesos. The "lunch" consisted of crackers, cheese cubes with toothpicks, a little salami, chips and dip. And a small glass of wine. There were no plates so everyone stood around the table, using fingers and toothpicks to get the food. Shocking considering how strick Chile is with covid protocols. I ended up with 5 cubes of cheese and 7 chips for my lunch. The last stop at a small town on the way home didn't make any sense at all and put us into rush hour traffic. We ended up leaving the van and walking to our hotel because it was faster.
