About
We will not be taking you down "food street" or to any of the tourist places that Chinatown has a lot of. At Singabites we believe that the best way to explore an area like Chinatown is by trying local food, made by local vendors for locals to enjoy. As a private tour we will be experiencing Chinatown at your own pace. On this tour we'll explore the real Chinatown and see how the different Chinese communities have made Singapore their home. We'll see the old opium dens and hear the stories of how life was for the workers who came here from China in the 19th century. We'll try dishes from Teochew, Cantonese, Hainanese and Hokkien hawkers. We'll get a chance to learn about hawker life and to get some tricks and tips on how to order the right thing. We'll explore a wet market and learn about the unique way that people live in this part of Singapore. Our guides have mapped out their favourite hawkers and vendors that will tell you the real story of this area.

Yummy food with a side serving of Singapore history and culture
Booked this tour several months ago as one of the first things we wanted to do as part of our long planned trip to Singapore. Staying not far from. Chinatown, it was an easy walk to our meeting place and a huge pleasure to meet Linda. Linda had contacted us the day before, introducing herself and confirming our attendance at the tour. She was so lovely and super knowledgeable about the history of Singapore and its multicultural population. As we moved from place to place, she delivered to us delicious tastes of well known dishes for us to try all while explaining the etiquette of the hawker markets. Each stop was something different. Amazing chicken rice, Kaya toast and coffee and even a famous laksa. We finished the tour with a full belly and a much better understanding of the food culture of Singapore. Linda stopped to take photos of us and provided us with great memories Highly recommend this tour and Linda as your guide for anyone visiting Singapore

Great guide - poor food. Overpriced.
Our tour guide was amazing and so knowledgeable about Singapore. He really brought to life the areas we visited. Unfortunately the food wasn’t great, and the tour is wayyyyyyyy overpriced. The first stop in little India was a strong start - but after that the flavours were average. The places were likely picked only because they’d been around a long time, and felt like they were tourist traps. My friend was a vegetarian and couldn’t try a lot of the food, and there were no alternatives usually. Often, the places we went too had run out of their special food as well. The guide was asking us what we wanted to eat, but we don’t know, we’re relying on him. I would expect like at least 10 snacks and 5 drinks on a tour like that - especially for that price and the cost of food in Singapore.

    Wonderfully curated tour of Katong
Absolutely brilliant late afternoon/ early evening walking around Katong with Linda. Learned so much about the history of Singapore as well as the neighbourhood. The different dishes we tried were all thoughtfully chosen and carefully narrated. The side visits to see traditional shop houses and the Hindu temple were also a real treat. If you want to see a different side of Singapore with a great guide - book this tour!

A fascinating insight into the food and history of Katong, Singapore.
We were fortunate to be guided by Shabnam for the tour. She is a Katong local and her knowledge of the history of the Peranakan food and people is incredible. We were treated to a feast of great food and fascinating history. Shabnam pointed out the Peranakan heritage in the buildings we visited and explained how the different variations of food in Singapore came to be.

Sunset Street Eats of Katong - excellent tour of a fantastic local area
My husband and I did the Sunset Street Eats of Katong. We have been to Singapore many times but had never done a food tour, but decided to do one to get to know a local area like Katong which is out of the typical tourist zone. Our guide Kathy was excellent - very knowledgeable about the history of the area having being born and grown up in the area. The food was amazing - as it is everywhere in Singapore - from the best chicken rice we have had, to the roti and laksa. The Hindu Temple was unfortunately closed but it was really wonderful to just walk around a local area like Katong to see the houses etc. Visiting the Peranakan house and museum at the end was excellent as well. At the end of the tour we stayed in Katong and had a drink at one of the many lovely bars and then finished off with an ice-cream. We would never have know what to see in Katong without having done the tour and will definitely come back to this area next time we visit Singapore. This was our first holiday overseas since 2019 due to COVID-19 and this food tour was a really wonderful part of the trip.

    Katong sunset food tour
The tour was amazing. We are a family of 4 with children 10 & 11, the tour was engaging for all of us and our guide Shabnam made sure the children were made to feel part of the action. The tour was a great mix of history, culture and a lot of fun. Can not recommend this tour enough. The time flew by and Shabnam was an excellent host, this is her local area so her knowledge is broad ranging. 10/10

Fantastic Little India food & culture tour
We had such a wonderful morning exploring vibrant and colourful Little India and its cultural and food treasures with tour guide Shabnam. She had so much passion, insight and local knowledge. One of the best tour guides we’ve ever had. We have lived in Singapore for many years, but discovered many delicious new dishes and so much history. Highly recommended!

New experience to explore Little India
Found that there was very nice briyani stall in tekka market - Yakader Muslim Food.... really damn gooddddd 🤤🤤🤤 Explore the tekka wet market and saw the crowd in the morning ... was interesting - people come and buy their daily needs (even you can find the cheapest ingredients in the area) New mural walls to explore, spotted instagram able places, and ended to sweet shop for dessert —— which means hope the sweet memories will be remained with you forever ☺️

    Enriching experience
We were lucky to have Shabnam as our tour guide, she was very engaging and knowledgeable. It was a lovely 3.5hrs discovering katong, learning the little nuggets about katong heritage, peranakan culture, tasting the famous food (curry puff, bakwa, chicken rice, roti prata and nonya snacks), history of the area and streets. As a Singaporean, the food was not the highlight of the tour but the whole experience including visiting a Hindu temple and peranakan museum. I would highly recommend this tour

Great staycation experience which you must try!
I joined the private Little India Morning Staycation Tour with my friends yesterday. This 2 hours tour was really amazing and I would like to recommend to more people who just stay in Singapore as we can't go travelling abroad during this Covid19. We followed the safe distancing rules during the tour as well. Since beginning of our morning tour, our tour leader (Shabnam) was very engaging, informative and fantastic! We were so excited as this tour help us big time to understand the culture and historical stories Little India and we also had a chance to taste some great Indian delicacies during the tour which we never had before! This tour really help us as a tourist to learn more deeper about our Little India. We love it so much to experience it with Singabites in near future to some Singapore great gem areas! Thanks again Singabites for the awesome staycation experience ever!

    Great Family Evening Out
We've lived in Singapore for a few years, and after enjoying food tours across SE Asia, signed up for this one to get a different view on the place we now call home. We really enjoyed this view of the neighbourhood, trying all new restaurants (to us), and hearing the stories behind them. Our tour guide, Shabnam, was lovely and patient with our kids (ages 5 and 7) as they asked questions. At the end of our tour, the kids asked when we could do another one - I don't think there's a better endorsement than that!
