What to expect
  • Meet your private guide for morning pickup at your Singapore hotel, and head first to Chinatown, Singapore’s vibrant Chinese enclave, by private, air-conditioned vehicle. Stop at the Thian Hock Keng Temple, one of the city’s oldest Hokkien temples. Head inside to explore the extravagant courts and halls, and learn how it was once the first port of call for Chinese sailors arriving in Singapore. Next, visit the Singapore City Gallery on the edges of Chinatown, charting the development of the city over the past 50 years through the fascinating architectural models. Travel to Sago Lane, the narrow street known as the ‘Street of the Dead.’ Learn how this now-redeveloped street was filled with Chinese ‘death houses,’ where the poor came to die, until the establishments were banned in the mid-20th century. Visit a traditional medicinal hall to learn about Chinese herbal remedies, and stroll down Pagoda Street, one of Chinatown’s main shopping hubs. Browse the markets for souvenirs, and enjoy lunch (own expense) at the Chinatown Complex Food Centre or Food Street. These food courts or ‘hawker centers’ are culinary heaven, with a myriad of food stands selling Chinese and local dishes like fish noodles, seafood, satay, and barbecued specialties. Afterward, drive to Little India, the historical home of Singapore’s Indian community. Wend your way by shops selling flowers, saris, and sweets, and see colorful temples, churches, and mosques. Continue to colonial-era streets like Dickson Road, Clive Street, and Dunlop Street, and finally, explore Kampong Glam, Singapore’s old-time Malay-Arab quarter. Explore lively Arab Street and Haji Lane, where traditional carpet and textile shops co-exist with trendy boutiques and cafes. Stop to admire the golden domes of the Sultan Mosque as you discover its intriguing history and links with the aristocracy. Your tour then concludes with a hotel drop-off.

This a fantastic tour to get an overview of Singapore’s people, culture, geography and points of interest. We did this tour on our first day here and it gave us lots of ideas and pointers of places to explore for the remainder of our stay. Both guides, Jesslet, (sorry about spelling), and Melvin were extremely knowledgeable and answered all our questions very well. The van was air conditioned, clean and comfortable with an unlimited supply of water. Highly recommend this tour.

You can't go wrong if you choose this tour. When we first met Monica, our guide, she wanted to know what we had already seen and done and it became apparent that much of what she had initially planned was already covered. So she almost completely replanned the day to be a good use of our time and did it brilliantly. We thoroughly enjoyed her company and wonderful sense of humor and all the things she did to keep us cool in the nearly 95 degree heat.

Our driver Melvin operates a new and large Mercedes van. Talk about comfort! It is large enough that I wouldn't hesitate at all to recommend it for two couples or even three couples as there are three-seat seats facing each other behind the driver and front seat passenger seat with lots of leg room between the guest seats.

We saw some things that we found very interesting which are not likely a part of the standard tour including a current favorite, some crazy rich Asians' homes, and model units at the Housing Development Board for the government housing in which over 80 percent of Singaporeans reside. Americans have a concept of government housing which isn't at all likely some of the lovely model units we saw.

If you tour with Monica and Melvin, you will definitely enjoy your day and pay a bit less than if you book it through your hotel concierge. We also received very prompt confirmation from them after booking the tour with hotel pick up, which I found very reassuring.
