- EPHky220 contributionsAwesome trip to TibetWe had an excellent trip to Tibet and Chengdu in June with the help of Cecilia from Asia Odyssey Travel. Thus even after 5 months after the trip (cos was too busy), I feel the company deserve a review. We initially were worried when we wanted to engage a local agency. We sought a few and Cecilia from Asia Odyssey Travel gave us the best assurance and confidence. From the planning to booking, Cecilia was thoughtful and detailed, giving us suggestions and always reply in time. She also took the extra mile to help us booked local activities that we were interested in. During the trip, we had some hiccups. Even though we had never seen Cecilia, she was always a Wechat away to help us solve the problems immediately. We were also lucky to have an excellent Tibet tour guide, Norbu. He was patient and sincere. Giving us an in depth understanding of their religion and culture. We covered all the planned itinerary and when we had extra time, he even brought us to extra places to immerse in the Tibetan real life culture. He was like a friend who introduced their best hidden places. It was an eye opener. One of the unforgettable add-on was an impromptu stop along our journey to see the Tibetan shepherds and their herds in the vast Tibetan landscape. An extra bonus, he takes great photos of us! We had travelled to many places and had services from many different tour agencies and guides. I must say that Cecilia and Norbu had provided top-notch services, making this Tibetan trip one of our most memorable one. We will definitely engage Asia Odyssey for our future China trips.Written November 24, 2024
- 809maggiw0 contributionsTIBET, NEPAL, BHUTAN - Our AWESOME Adventure !!!We were a group of 5 friends who all travelled from different parts of the world, met up in Lhasa and set off together to discover this largely restricted, mysterious part of Asia. In other circumstances we would have chosen independent travel but as our time was limited and there were permits required in 2 of the countries we opted for a "private tour" which would include drivers and guides throughout. Our research lead us to ISAAC at ASIA ODYSSEY and, having established a rapport by email and phone, we took the huge "leap of faith" to entrust our trip (and our money) to them !!! We need not have worried - right from first contact our questions were answered and our concerns allayed quickly and efficiently. Throughout the whole setting up process the information we needed was fed to us "as required" so we were not overwhelmed and we always felt under control. This included arrival flights, local communication advice, health, packing, passport and visa advice plus anything else we had thought of along the way. We were able to speak to Isaac whenever it seemed important, international payments were processed seamlessly and by the time we set off we all felt well prepared. At each stage of the trip we were kept informed about what was happening and given the opportunity to make requests and changes. Our guides were all very knowledgeable, enthusiastic, friendly, attentive and willing to "go the extra mile" - we felt we were in good hands. Our drivers were all familiar with the roads and conditions, drove with care and attention and as smoothly as the roads allowed. They made us as comfortable as possible and kept us supplied with water and oxygen, as required. The vehicles used were sound and kept clean. Water was always available. We all consider our trip to have been INCREDIBLE !!! The kaleidoscope of scenery and colour is breathtaking. The contrasts in customs and culture are absolutely mesmerising. The animals are strange and wonderful. The mountains are SOOOO high !!! We did not know there were so many variations within Buddhism; that there were so many different styles of monasteries and stupas; that EVERYTHING could change so completely just by crossing a border. Most people will experience some symptoms whilst adjusting to the altitude in Tibet and, although it's usually manageable, it's best to be prepared. We opted for hotels with oxygen available into the bedrooms which was really helpful. It's early starts and long days but IT'S TOTALLY WORTH IT !!! If you had sufficient time for your trip you could factor a few hours of "down time" into your itinerary. We would have allowed about half a day in each country if we could have. We have no hesitation in recommending Asia Odyssey. They delivered an amazing trip for us and have been receptive to our suggestions and constructive feedback which demonstrates their commitment to continually trying to improve their travellers' experiences. We would especially recommend ISAAC - Thank You for helping us make our "Asian Adventure" become reality !!!Written November 22, 2024

As our designated travel consultant, May was responsive to our queries and needs. Communicating with her was a pleasure as she warmed our hearts with her commitment, patience and empathy. 'Terima Kasih' May!!! A heartfelt thank you also goes to our dedicated tour guide, Timo. He was knowledgeable on Xi'an history and had answered all our queries with patience and professionalism. He gave us ample time to explore each tourist site and was always around to help us with our shopping needs and photograph taking. He also understood that food is an important way to learn about culture and had gone all out to let us sample different kinds of (halal) foods. We enjoyed them all. One culinary experience that we cannot forget was the hot pot dinner, where we chose the hottest dip sauce, despite Timo's repeated caution (😃😃😃). Needless to say, we were steaming hot!!! Suffered and yet happy. Once a while, you are lucky enough to hit a jackpot. We felt this way with AOT. Sofiah Abd Rahman Selangor, Malaysia 21 Nov 2024Written November 22, 2024
- Tour341807463610 contributionsThe travel agent with an extra mile helping hand. When I joined the group for the trip to Tibet (China), the itinerary was already in a good shape except the missing domestic flights and train info. The Chinese government only allowed to purchase the tickets in advance no sooner than 6 months for domestic flights, and two weeks for train. Knowing we would arrive Chengdu from Lhasa on 24.11.12, I purchased my returned flight to Los Angeles for the next day 24.11.13. The flight would depart from Chengdu and connect at the Shanghai airport. For the day 24.11.12, I planned to stay around the airport area as I had visited the Chengdu city before. When the info for the domestic flight from Lhasa to Chengdu became available, I knew I was in trouble because I would arrive Chengdu at the CTU airport and leave Chengdu at the TFU airport (TFU was 40 miles from CTU). I contacted Thalia the travel agent. She changed my domestic flight to the TFU airport and booked a hotel near TFU for me. And everything seemed to be in good order. On 24.11.12 the day before my departure, the airlines’ web page did not allow me to pick the seat for my Shanghai to Los Angeles international flight. I went to Thalia for help. She said I could only select my seat a few hours in advance (instead of 24 hours) prior to my departure. Because the hotel that Thalia booked for me was a 5-minute walk from the airport check in counters, I could afford to walk from my hotel to the airport twice that day: one to inquire the seating process, and a second walk that evening to select the seat I preferred. That was fantastic because the flight was eventually full! Thalia continued to track our progress once we started the trip from Beijing. She sent us weather reports, reminders, info of the local guides along the way. Her assignment was supposed to complete after I boarded the Lhasa-Chengdu flight. And yet she extended her helping hand for an extra mile (while she was on vacation), changing my flight to TFU, booking the perfect hotel, and directing me to get my preferred seat. I know I could not thank her enough, but at least here to express my appreciation: Thank you Thalia (of Asia Odyssey Travel Co.)!Written November 21, 2024

- S612MBallisons0 contributionsGreat tour of Beijing with Asia Odyssey!Wasn’t able to attend the full 8 day Beijing/Xian/Shanghai group tour so Asia Odyssey let me join in on just the Beijing part and I had a great time! There were 6 of us so it was more personalized and easier to get around. Asia Odyssey answered all my questions and the booking process was super smooth. The trip itself was also seamlessly organized and our tour guide Kang was great! Overall really enjoyed my time on this tour and was glad I booked with Asia Odyssey.Written November 16, 2024
- FellowTraveler5850960 contributionsA memorable tripWe recently took a 6 day tour to Tibet , booking through Asia Odyssey Travel through agent Thalia. Our itinerary including 1, flying from Peking to Xining (with one day private tour in Xining) 2, taking overnight train from Xining to Lhasa. 3, Staying in Lhasa for 4 nights visiting several monasteries, palaces and Yamdrok Lake. 4, flying from Lhasa to Chengdu with one day private tour in Chengdu. The highlights of the tour is the overnight train ride ( around 19 hours) passing snow capped mountains with breath taking scenery. Although we were told by several tours that it was extremely difficult to obtain train tickets, Thalia was able to secure train tickets and Tibet permits for us as promised ( soft sleeper cabin for four) Thalia is the best travel agent I have dealt with so far. We communicated by WhatsApp and paid by PayPal or WeChat. Thalia sent us itinerary first and followed us throughout the whole trip with updated detailed instructions of flight information, airport pick up and tour guide contact information, scenic points on the train ride , and precautions for high altitude sickness. ( there are oxygen and humidifier in Lagani hotel in Lhasa) When our flight from Lhasa to Chengdu was delayed, Thalia made her best efforts to rebook different flights. We also had fantastic tours in Chengdu lead by Tina Chen and in Xining by Sally Thalia is reliable, always replying texts promptly and available even when she was on vacation. Her English is excellent. She is professional , pleasant , optimistic and reassuring. We definitely will contact her for any future trips to China. - 698miguelb0 contributionsExcellent professional service, thank you Thalia, guides and drivers from Asia Odyssey TravelI contacted Odyssey and Thalia replied. My wife, Nora, and I traveled to China for the first time. We visited Hong Kong, Beijing, Xi'an and Shanghai. Thalia, from Odyssey, organised the trip at our request and excelled in the provided services, including internal travel in China, hotels, guides and drivers in Beijing, Xi'an and Shanghai. Hong Kong, as she advised, was organised by ourselves to be cost effective given the area and period of time we visited it. The hotels were excellent, the guides were fantastic and the drivers took us to all of our destinations safely and professionally. As an additional and remarkable note, when I lost my camera bag with camera and lenses in it at the Airport in Hong Kong, Thalia organised its pick up and sent the items to our hotel in Shanghai via a courier, which was a highlight in our trip. China is, in our impression, a fantastic country, worth visiting, with an extraordinary infrastructure, amazing places to visit, an enjoyable culture, delicious food and very hospitable. We felt guided and assisted by Thalia, who was reachable at all times via WhatsApp. The cities and places we visited were simply extraordinary. The high velocity trains were fantastic. The assistance from the teams was particularly important given that English is not commonly spoken and when it is, the local pronunciation is not always easy to understand hence being guided and helped by the Travel Agent was in our case of paramount importance. An additional fact to highlight is that the flight from Xi'an to Shanghai was cancelled due to bad weather and Thalia quickly organised, after consulting with us via WhatsApp, going by high speed train. Thank you Thalia, from Odyssey, thank you Thomas, our guide from Beijing, Kimi, guide from Xi'an, Linda (picked us up at train station in Shanghai and took us to the airport to return home), and Jessica, the Shanghai guide. Thank you to all three excellent drivers.Written November 13, 2024

Our trip was the 7 day Lhasa to Kathmandu combined with a custom made trip to Chengdu and ride on the high altitude train to Lhasa. The experience was incredible. Our tour organizer Jamie was a gem and left no stone unturned to cater to all our requests in order to make are stay as comfortable and enjoyable as possible. Our guides Rosa (in Chengdu) and Susan (for the Lhasa trip) were simply wonderful. We are senior citizens and they went out of their way to ensure our safety and comfort even when we were in the midst of landslides and natural disasters. The three ladies are absolute gems.

Top preparation before the trip by Cici, an employee of Asia Odyssee Travel. Excellent logistics (airport-hotel transfer, Lhasa city tour, Lhasa-Kathmandu tour). Both guides (Lhasa and round trip) were very competent. And the management of the many permits worked excellently.

I am two tourists from Baotou City, Inner Mongolia. My seven day trip to Tibet is coming to an end. With nostalgia, I am very satisfied with the work of the tour guide Comrade Wang Jinhui. In the past few days, my husband and I have not only taken care of our daily life, but also given full play to our own skilled business expertise, enjoying the local conditions and customs of Tibet and the beautiful scenery of Tibet, His sincere, simple, optimistic and cheerful personality makes his trip to Tibet full of joy and nostalgia. He will come in the future! Goodbye Tibet!

We decided to do something different for our 25th wedding anniversary and decided upon a tour visiting China (inc Tibet) & ending at Kathmandu, Nepal. We contacted Vincent at Asia Odyssey Travel who assisted us with ensuring that the holiday we wanted was what we got. We made quite a few changes to the standard itinerary, including flying from Xian to Lhasa. We would have loved to have taken the train journey of 31 hours but the smallest berth was for 4 people. This may have been fine but was unwilling to risk being stuck in a small berth with people we would have preferred not to be with. Please research the various options yourself if you take this tour. Think about getting an eSim before you arrive in China and a VPN although we still couldn’t access most emails of social media.
We arrived in Beijing and was met by our guide at the airport arrivals and then taken to our first hotel. All our guides were very friendly, spoke good English and were very knowledgeable. Similarly all our drivers were very professional and safe. Driving in China is an interesting experience.
All the sites we visited during our tour were amazing. In Beijing, these were Tienanmen square, the forbidden palace, summer palace, Jingshan park and the great wall at Mutianyu which was a 2 hour drive but less touristy and had been renovated. All places were fairly crowded and you will be pushed at times by Chinese tourists - don't expect the same courtesies as you would expect in the west. Also be prepared to have your passport check multiple times at each location.
Next stop was Xian which we traveled to via the high speed train. We choose first class seats which was worth the extra cost, There are actually 4 classes of travel - 3rd, 2nd, 1st & business. The train was very smooth and it was difficult to believe that during the journey we were traveling at 348km/h (216mph).
The hotel was very comfortable (Ramada) and a step up from the Beijing hotel. In Xian we visited the Terracotta army which encompassed 3 separate sites all in large halls. This was extremely crowded and difficult to get to the railings to take pictures, but we did manage. Later we visited the Drum and bell towers and had a walk on the city wall. Followed by a visit to the Muslim quarter and mosque. If you have been to a middle eastern mosque or bazaar then this is not as grand but still worth a visit, including sampling some local food. Finally in Xian, we visited the Shanxi history museum which was very informative. We did attend two shows recommended by our guide - the silk road and story of the Empress. The silk road was phenomenal - we sat on a giant turntable which revolved around the different stages. This show included volcanoes, volcanoes, wolves in addition to the regular actors. The Empress show included a dumpling dinner with 12 varieties of dumplings.
Following a short flight to Lhasa we relaxed at our hotel. We did suffer from altitude sickness but in a few days had acclimatised and were OK without the need for oxygen which was readily available. The next few days were very busy with visits to Jokhang temple, Sera monastery (inc monks debates), Bakhor Street and Potala palace. All these were amazing and we had an excellent guide who explained each place with a good level of detail but didn't overload us.
The highlight of the trip was Everest base camp. It was a great drive through the twisting mountain roads with great vistas. The accommodation was a large tent divided into separate bedrooms and a living area. Thankfully they had electric under-blankets as it down to minus 14 inside the tent at night. Be aware that each evening between 10 and 11 they play loud music so don’t expect to sleep before then. Also the toilet facilities are very basic and there is no washing facilities - fortunately we had bought hand wipes with us.
We then traveled to Gyirong for our border crossing to Nepal. The number of hotels is limited and are of significantly lower standards than found in western countries. However this was not part of the normal tour. The Chinese side of the border was very impressive with a fairly new imposing building. Expect to have your phone taken off you to see what photographs you have taken. The Nepal side of the border is in essence a shanty town with an unmade road - definitely need a 4x4 vehicle, as on the 7 hour journey to Kathmandu, 4 hours was on unpaved roads full of potholes. The tour company supplied a guide to obtain our Nepal visas, this was a god send as there was a free for all approach at immigration.
Overall a great experience enabled by Asia Odyssey travel. Thank you.
