What to expect
Noted as one of the 'top 10' things to do in Hong Kong, Old Hong Kong style dim sum is not so much of a food tour, as it is trying a new experience. Often thought of as Chinese tapas, dim sum, are small dishes meant to be shared around the table and is the epitome of Hong Kong food. It's about a 5 minute walk to the traditional dim sum parlour and it makes no concession to modernity or English speakers, so be prepared for pantomime. Fear not: your guide will be there every step of the way, making sure you know what you’re eating and that you have plenty of dim sum and tea. Not only will you eat dim sum, but you'll learn how to look for your own seat and wash your own dishes. Learn what classic tea pairing is with dim sum and how to get food. Hear about the history, traditions, and culture of yum cha. The dim sum lunch is included. There is no set menu, but there are around 30 different dimsum varieties that we can choose from on any given day. Experience pouring tea from an old teapot (it’s a lot harder than you think) and enjoy bottomless Chinese tea to accompany your lunch. Tour will end at approximately 1pm. Your guide can walk you back to the Central MTR station or give you directions to the Sheung Wan MTR station.

What A Great Lunch Experience!
Jan 2020
We met Virginia outside of a subway exit this morning to begin our dim sum guided luncheon. She was on time with a big smile on her face and excited to help us experience what is considered by many a classic dim sum lunch.

Since Virginia is Canadian born Chinese her English is impeccable which helped us in our conversations as we learned more about each other and about many of the cultural traditions in Hong Kong.

The restaurant was a short walk from our meeting point. I somehow felt transported back in time as I looked around the dining area with the servers pushing their dim sum carts up and down the isles, stopping at the tables, and dropping off their delicious wares with their patrons.

Virginia told us all about the traditional customary dim sum lunch and explained the various dishes available. She showed us how to wash our cups, bowls, chopsticks and spoon are using hot water provided at our table in a traditional manner.

She explained how to steep the tea properly and how to serve it to one another, thanking the pourer with an age old tradition of tapping two fingers on the table.

Once bowls and chopsticks were clean and ready and our cups of tea were poured we begin to explore the wonderful world of dim sum!

Frankly, I cannot recall precisely the names of the various dishes we were served, but they were all so very, very delicious! The dumplings were rich and flavorful with filings made from pork and chicken and shrimp and other delicious stuffings.

Virginia guided us through the various offerings each step of the way with an explanation of what we were enjoying. She also pointed out intricacies about our surroundings telling us about the locals who traditionally enjoy their dim sum lunch and how the entire process works. For someone only familiar with traditional American restaurants this was quite an eye-opener for us and a marvelous learning experience.

I wholeheartedly recommend Virginia and her guided dim sum lunch experience! The food was phenomenal, the ambience memorable, and Virginia made the whole thing simply spectacular! In fact, I would endorse any tour which Virginia provides because she is a fun, professional and engaging hostess!

Dim Sum with a Chance of TASTY
Sep 2019
Because the other guests cancelled I had Virginia and Kelly all to myself. We had a great time talking about Dim Sum and Hong Kong while they tried to get me Dim Sum that would suit my taste best. And they nailed it! Every single dish was amazing and I wouldn’t have ordered most of them myself as I wouldn’t have dared to try them.

I highly recommend Virginia and Kelly and this food tour!

Dim Sum tour
We had the best time trying traditional dim sum at a local tea house, from learning how to wash our plates and utensils in tea to trying all the delicious and different dim sum! Kelly was great at explaining everything to us and telling us all about the history of dim sum. Our kids 10 & 11 really enjoyed this too and had a try of everything, highly recommend this tour!

Authentic Dim Sum Experience
Aug 2019
My partner and I thoroughly enjoyed our recent Guided Dim Sum Lunch in Hong Kong.
Kelly, our lovely guide, explained and demonstrated some of the traditions behind dining at this old teahouse. All the food selected for us was delicious and we felt privileged to be dining in such a traditional establishment frequented mostly by locals. This tour by Humid with a Chance of Fishballs is a tour with a difference.

We have visited Hong Kong many times. The reason for participation of this tour was that we wanted to know the traditional manner of dim sum and to feel Hong konger's real life. Thanks to this tour, I was able to learn the table manner of dim sum. The restaurant is very rare and old style. The dim sum was very good. We are able to enjoy this tour with other participants It was a nice memory to feel specific atomosphere of Hong kong. I want to join this tour again. Thank you Ms. Virginia!

Unique Dim Sum Experience
Mar 2019 • Couples
Virginia was very knowledgeable about eating at a traditional tea house/dim sum parlor. It was a unique experience that I did not expect and I would not have otherwise experienced without this Airbnb experience. I am familiar with dim sum, but this was different. Virginia included the tradition and background of dim sum which was new to me. Most importantly, the food was delicious and was made in-house that morning. I would highly recommend this experience for your next Hong Kong trip.

Glimpse of the chaos of old Hong Kong
Jan 2019 • Solo
I've had dim sum quite a few times, but this tour showed it could be at a whole new level. Chaotic, bustling, people scrambling for food as it comes. It was really fun to enjoy the food amongst the craziness, all the meanwhile being given really interesting tidbits of history. Really great experience as a solo traveller!

Authentic Dim Sum Experience
Feb 2019 • Friends
It was the first time in Hong Kong for my sister, my cousin, and myself, and we all agreed that this tour was one of the highlights of our time there. Virginia is a very knowledgeable guide with a great sense of humor (as I'm sure you can tell from the tour company name!). She took us through an authentic dim sum experience—one that we could never have done on our own. In fact, I'd probably still be standing at the door, hoping for a seat. You can find dim sum places in Hong Kong, but you won't find one like this. And even if you did, you'd need someone with the know-how to get you through it. Highly recommended!
