About the operator
Don’t take it from us – here’s what people have to say about this operator:
- Tamara N0 contributionsDinner tourA really great way of trying lots of Beijing dishes intertwined with history. Some of these places you would never find one your own. Only downside was I would’ve loved Peking Duck included. But this tour included some lesser known dishes to the outsider which I think was great. Guide was very knowledgeable.Written January 17, 2025
- Resort335400112800 contributionsHighly recommend the dinner tour with Garth! This was the best food tour we've done in any city! Delicious food and drinks, interesting eateries and we learned so much about food, the neighbourhood, and Beijing and China in general from our super knowledgable guide Garth. He also made sure to look after all our needs along the way and took into account our preferences etc. Thanks for such a great evening!Written January 12, 2025
- Rickb010 contributionsFantastic experience! Thanks GarthThe Food/diner tour was excellent. Garth has a lot of knowledge about the beijing (and Chinese) kitchen he will also give you little history lesson. For me it was a 10/10! Thanks again GarthWritten December 12, 2024
- Roam275850479170 contributionsInsightful, Fun and DeliciousGarth was a fantastic host and we loved this tour around old Beijing. What made it special was the opportunity to have all different experiences in restaurants, bars, homes and even convenience stores. We tried things we wouldn’t have known about on our own. Garth bought the food and streets to life with his knowledge of the food and the town. With a passion that was infectious. It was also lovely to share an evening with fellow travellers. Thank you for a wonderful evening GarthWritten December 9, 2024
- anouke8190 contributionsMjamjamIt took me only 5 years of living in Beijing to take this tour and though I've spent a lot of time in the hutongs the tour brought us to several unknown spots. Garth and his co-guide were awesome, enthusiast foody's and storytellers. Def a must-do if you visit the capital and like food. Who doesn't?Written December 2, 2024
- Q8813IXcrystalb0 contributionsDelicious food and super interesting tour! This is such a superb food tour! Garth is a welcoming and knowledgeable guide to his neighbourhood hutong. It's so evident how much thought has gone into the choosing of all the stops on the tour, not always because something is the most delicious, but because it is an important or staple Beijing breakfast food. That said, we visited a very diverse range of food shops, markets and restaurants and just about everything was incredibly delicious. I especially enjoyed being able to compare homemade versions of certain treats with those produced for restaurants, as well as a number of different versions of the classic breakfast bing. I'm vegetarian and Garth was easily able to accommodate me. He also has so much knowledge about the roots of different Beijing food traditions and so you feel like you're getting a much richer understanding of how these breakfast foods connect to Chinese culture—not only a tour of delicious and interesting foods, but a cultural history lesson too! Hugely recommendedWritten November 30, 2024

- SandiliebNY0 contributionsSign up now! Excellent food and history tour!We visited China for a month and this was one of the highlights! My husband loves food, and this tour did not disappoint!!! In addition to fabulous food (from jenbing to donkey burgers to hotpot to the longest hand-pulled noodles we've ever seen...and more!) Garth gave us the history of each dish, as well as an amazing tour of the "real" Beijing hutongs (this is not the view you get from the rickshaw tours!) I have celiac disease and do not consume alcohol, but I went along for the history and I had a great time, even though I could not eat at the chosen establishments (China is not gluten-free friendly.) Garth went out of his way to bring some delicious fresh fruit for me (first time trying fresh mangosteens!) and I was able to eat the yogurt (delish!!!) so I did not feel deprived at all. Walking was totally manageable and my recommendation - which Garth says himself - is don't fill up too quickly! Highly recommend this excellent tour!!!Written November 25, 2024
- tates120 contributionsCome with a big appetite! We had a great time with Garth, I love his food selection and the sequence we did the tour. I liked them all and would have wanted to buy the rice wine but it wont do well on air travel. I highly recommend the tour and come with an empty stomach!Written November 19, 2024
- Jay2310070 contributionsThe perfect food tourI had a great time on this tour with Garth and it was definitely worth my time and money. I can eat a lot and I was so full by the end and it was all food/shops I wouldn’t have tried on my own. Garth also provided historical info on China/Beijing along the way. Highly recommend!Written November 16, 2024
- Brittimholz0 contributionsAmazing food tour in Beijing!During our trip to China we decided to book a dinner tour in Beijing to learn more about the Chinese / Beijing kitchen and food. The tour with UnTours was really amazing and Garth is a great tour guide!! He teaches you about historical facts and facts about the food. We tried a lot of different things! You should definitely go on the tour if you like to try some new food and drinks!Written November 13, 2024
- nastynick1230 contributionsTake this tour on arrival in Beijing .I enjoyed Garth's Beijing dinner tour immensely ; Garth is very knowledgeable about both China and cookery & makes a very considerate host . There was no shortage of food & beverages & we definitely went to places & enjoyed dishes I would not have encountered without Garth's guidance . He also provides a post tour package recommending restaurants and walks for later in your trip. I consider this to have been the most memorable part of my visit to China & I am now thinking of visiting Chengdu just to take the UnTour food tour there .Written November 11, 2024
- alsisi0 contributions5 star food tour in BeijingI thoroughly recommend the old Beijing Dinner Tour. It was a great introduction to some of the city’s best known dishes as well as some that I wouldn’t have known to try on my own. Garth was a terrific host, clearly passionate about food and life in Beijing. His sharing of history, culture and food customs made the evening even more memorable. If you love to learn about food when you travel this is a great way to spend an evening.Written November 8, 2024
- Discover2852130 contributionsFantastic experienceGarth's dinner tour was wonderful, 7 or 8 stops at a variety of venues. Starting at small hole in the wall places you would walk past and not even realise existed, shop fronts where we would not have know what they offered or what to order, a rice wine tasting and finishing in a private home. Instruction on how to correctly eat a hot pot, concoting your own spice paste to dip the meat and vegetables into after cooking was knowledge we utilised later on in our trip in China. The highlight for me was the sczechuan chicken wings which were sensational - I finally got the numbing and tingling experience properly after many fails in Australian restaurants. I highly recommend this tour, it took the guessworkout of ordering food elsewhere on our trip, and was great fun.Written November 7, 2024
- katie260 contributionsFab eveningGreat tour with Jesus (& apologies again for being late). We were a group of 8 and lovely company for the evening as we wandered the hutongs eating and drinking. Jesus was an enthusiastic and super friendly knowledgable. Guide with just the right amount of detail on each place. We ate Mongolian hotpot; yoghurt; donkey in crispy bread; chicken wings; noodles; sampled rice wine (& beer!); had some tasty bimbi and more. The 3 plus hours flew in and highly recommended.Written October 31, 2024

We had an amazing tour with Garth! His knowledge made the experience so great, giving us insights into both Chinese food and its culture. We were able to try so many dishes at locations we would have NEVER found on our own. The variety was incredible. We highly recommend taking this tour at the start of your trip; that way, you know what to order for the rest of the time. We've been on many food tours, but this one really stands out as one of the best. The attention to detail was incredible, and we left with a newfound love for Chinese cuisine and a lot more knowledge. If you want an unforgettable food adventure, this tour is the way to go!

Our tour with Garth was fantastic! Knowing that there was amazing food to be had in Beijing, but not knowing what or where or how to order it can be frustrating. Garth walked us confidently and rapidly through some of the best food we'd ever eaten, in places we never would have thought to look. We also got amazing descriptions of the history and significance of each dish we had, as well as the neighborhoods they were in.

Dear John - We’re so proud (of Beijing) to hear the dishes you tried on the Old Beijing Dinner Tour are some of the best you’ve ever eaten. They’re some of the best we’ve ever eaten too! Selecting the dishes we include on our tours is a truly delightful job, as is then getting to share them all with visiting foodies like your family. Thanks again for dining with us and for your kind review!

The food tour has been fantastic and the guide has been incredibly knowledgeable about the food, its origins and the history of Beijing overall. I loved that we went to local, hidden away places that I would have never found myself and really got to try to eat the food from the people that cook it for generations and know exactly what they are doing.
This tour is one of the best investments to make in Beijing and I'd really recommend it!

Dear Rita - Thanks so much for your kind recommendation! We’re very pleased to hear you enjoyed the neighborhood restaurants we visited on your tour. It does indeed take generations to build up some of the skills needed to cook the dishes we try and we love showing people the history and culture that’s behind the food. Happy travels!

Outstanding night. Exceeded my high expectations, China / Beijing really does offer a broad spectrum of outstanding food that In Australia we don't really get to taste. Garth was a thoughtful, insightful guide who really added to the tour - he's super passionate about his craft and it showed throughout the night.

This tour is highly recommended. It is a great way to learn about the history of Beijing while walking around in the cozy Hutong area and eating local food.
The food and drinks were really tasty and definitely things from the menu that we would not have ordered ourselves. Don’t be afraid of going hungry to bed, because this will not happen after this tour! We had a lot of different dishes served in different places that we would never have found and we were really full at the end.
Besides the great food, we also enjoyed getting to know more about the Hutong area of Beijing. Our guide new a lot about the area and history of the city and could answer all the questions that we had. There were so many things that surprised us about the history. It was a good balance of great food and history without getting bored 😊 If you are a food lover this tour is a must do in Beijing. The food we ate on this tour was actually the most tasty food we had on our vacation in Beijing.
