Beijing is the best place to sample regional specialties, but most visitors get stuck on the same tourist track. During this insider’s food crawl through Lao Beijing, or Old Beijing, you’ll discover under-the-radar eateries and family-run restaurants. Sample traditional dishes alongside locals as you tuck into 15 different treats from three different food stops, along with local stalls. Tours are limited to 8 people for a personalized experience. Prepare to be treated to an edible history lesson as you embark on a fact-filled taste tour. Learn about the invasions of Genghis Khan as you tuck into a Mongolian hotpot, and explore the city's hutong culture through a taste of Beijing BBQ chicken wings. Top off the evening with a Beijinger favorite—a family-run chicken restaurant—and a taste of the city’s one-of-a-kind jarred yogurt.

- meeg_sian00Couldn't recommend this food tour enough - UnTour does it again!Having loved UnTour's dinner tour in Shanghai, we were keen to try this hutong breakfast tour on the next leg of our trip in Beijing - it didn't disappoint! Garth was warm, friendly and informative - he adapted the tour to our pacing and encouraged us to spend lots of time chatting and enjoying the food at each place. The tour provided a great overview of the history of the hutongs, and we left stuffed with amazing food (and knowledge)! The tour was a really enjoyable way to familiarise ourselves with lots of different foods in local, authentic spots which we would never have found by ourselves and we could then recognise some favourite foods during the rest of our trip. Garth was always keen to answer our many, many questions about food and life in Beijing. We were due to visit the Forbidden City after the tour and Garth made sure we knew where we were going and were generally well prepared for the rest of our day/remaining time in Beijing. Thank you so much Garth - we couldn't recommend the tour enough!
- Lil_lisa4800Amazing Food Tour with HistoryMy colleague did an Untour Food Tour in Shanghai and loved it so much that she convinced me to book the breakfast and dinner Hutong tour in the same day! The tours were both amazing and we left so happy and stuffed. Our guide was Garth who spoke perfect english and who was so knowledgeable about Beijing’s history as well as the history behind each food. You’ll go to places you wouldn’t go on your own and will get to try so many authentic dishes (I’m determined to find some of them in California). Aside from being so knowledgeable he was so organized and helpful. He pointed out all the “nice” bathrooms and even brought toilet paper for the women just in case! 10/10 recommend this tour you will not regret it!
- Sightseer2934954925800Great experience! The combination of great food and in depth knowledge about its history and the local culture in general made the breakfast tour great! the food was delicious, the places were authentic and non touristy, serving local customer. even with some Chinese knowledge it would have been difficult to find alone while going around the area. Thanks Garth for the super enjoyable experience!
- 398emilyd00Fantastic Food FunIf you like delicious food with a side of history and context then this is the thing for you. Pace yourself on the eating because you'll get to try a *lot* of different breakfast foods. Most of these stops are hard for the casual tourist to independently find since they include pop-ups and convenience store windows, but everything was a treat - even the douzhi. I have only good things to say about my two tours with Garth. Both the dinner and breakfast tours that we took with him were delightful and delicious.
- mattbU3054HP00Tasty food and authentic experiencesGarth is the perfect host. His choice of breakfasts and their locations were spot-on. Lovely tasty food from dumplings in local restaurants to street food kiosks. I got real insights into the food and also the local neighbourhood. All complemented by his expert insights into the food preparation and history. Unforgettable experience and I highly recommend it,
- huilingch00Great way to discover Beijing through foodReally enjoyable breakfast tour, amazing way to discover Beijing and try different local food and learn about the interesting history behind each dish. Garth was a great guide and very knowledgeable of the city. Thanks for a lovely experience!
- jannikacao00Great experience with tasty food and stories about Beijing and the Hutong area that you did not know! This tour is highly recommended. It is a great way to learn about the history of Beijing while walking around in the cozy Hutong area and eating local food. The food and drinks were really tasty and definitely things from the menu that we would not have ordered ourselves. Don’t be afraid of going hungry to bed, because this will not happen after this tour! We had a lot of different dishes served in different places that we would never have found and we were really full at the end. Besides the great food, we also enjoyed getting to know more about the Hutong area of Beijing. Our guide new a lot about the area and history of the city and could answer all the questions that we had. There were so many things that surprised us about the history. It was a good balance of great food and history without getting bored 😊 If you are a food lover this tour is a must do in Beijing. The food we ate on this tour was actually the most tasty food we had on our vacation in Beijing.
- academicjess00The best food tour I've been onI feel full and happy even just thinking about this tour! Definitely go hungry, you're going to eat so much and it’s going to be impossible to have any kind of self-restraint. I’ve been in China a while but there was so much I’d never tried before, as well as Beijing classics, including the longest youtiao in the city! My faves were the doufu nao (literally tofu brains, but so much more delicious than it sounds), mungbean juice ( a real surprise) and the ‘donkeys rolling in the dust’ sweet treats, that I’ve been looking out for everywhere since then but I think our guide, Garth, found the only place in China that serves them warm. He was a big highlight – it felt like touring with a local celebrity, even people passing on the street were stopping to say hi! This is way more than just a food tour – I learnt so much about Beijing, China and Chinese along the way. He obviously knows loads, but he explains it in such an engaging, conversational way. And because the stories were linked to different foods, I’ve found I actually remembered them when I next ate that food. Food tours are my go-to when I travel, and this is the best I’ve been on anywhere. I really can’t recommend it enough, and I’ll definitely be doing their dinner tour next time.
- SJK60400A wonderful culinary experience! We visited Beijing in July 2019 (sorry for the late review!) Our tour guide Julia was very informative and was able to answer all of our, and our 7 year old daughters questions about the food and areas we walked through. We enjoyed so many of the different food options it's hard to choose a favourite, but what made the the experience was eating in the restaurants and little pop-ups in the back streets where the locals usually eat. I particularly loved walking through the Hutongs and seeing streets and alleys you probably wouldn't normally walk down if you were just visiting a city. I felt we saw the real side of Beijing and not just the popular sights! My family and I highly recommend this tour!!
- Rod_NBTBM00Educational, Exploratory, Fun Food Feast! So glad I joined the small group tour, exploring hutongs and little food outlets I would never have come across otherwise. Kelly, our fantastic guide, was extremely knowledgeable about the food, it’s origins and it’s place in Chinese society. A great way to learn more about Chinese history whilst enjoying sumptuous snacks!
- rogozhkinad00Besy experience in Shanghai!!!We joined the tour with my husband initially just to explore the food of Shanghai. But it made us understand Chinese culture and people. Food unite everyone and China does not seam so alien and different after this experience. Un Tour organization is just impeccable. We definitely will join another tour with them.
- Nancy R00Authentic Cuisine and Cultural ExperienceI am a repeat customer of Untour. Always delighted. The food tours are one of the best ways to learn about China. This tour takes you through the ancient hutong courtyards to sample the diverse array of breakfast foods. The guides are knowledgeable and share the history as well as their personal knowledge. Expect to try some dishes that you would never find on your own. I have ordered some of the dishes for breakfast during the remainder of my stay in China. Meander through the courtyards to discover hidden local restaurants and watch the Beijingers begin their day. Learn about the history of the Hutongs and the dishes. There is a bit of walking at a leisurely pace with sit-down venues along the way. The guides are Chinese or expats who have lived in Beijing for a decade. Their knowledge adds to the delightful experience. It is one of the reasons that I am a repeat customer. Great for teenagers too. My 13 year old daughter loves these tours. They are by far the highlight of her experience in China. This is a MUST DO event!
- 168marisah00Perfect Hutong tour for lunchA group of about 12 of us went on a lunch Tour of the Hutongs. Our tour guides were Garth and Lily. They were both absolutely fabulous! Not only did they take us to amazing restaurants, they gave us the background on the types of food we were eating and history of the area. We couldn’t be more impressed by their professionalism and knowledge.
- hooberh00Fun and InformativeBeing a Beijing local, I found it interesting to go on this food tour with foreign travelers. Our guide, Greg, was very knowledgeable and I even learned something on this tour. Greg and his assistant were also considerate. They provided me with vegetarian options wherever possible. Other foreign travelers were quite excited while walking around Hutong and tasting local food. Highly recommended!
- TomS73800Amazing food in a place we would have never venturedCelia was the best. Food was amazing, her explanations were on point, and the tour far exceeded our expectations. It was so good, we went back to the same hutong the next morning for breakfast.

Celia is great fun to be around and she knows how to turn a group of strangers into instant friends for a night. There are tour guide who're in it for the money, Celia isn't one of them. She's the real deal and knows her stuff, not just the stuff she shows you but any question you might have will be answered thoroughly. Expect to taste real local cuisine and gain access to spots you won't get into as a laowei

Hi Steven - thanks so much for reviewing! We've designed our tour so it feels like a night out with friends (albeit one friend who knows A LOT about food), so we're so happy to hear your experience with Celia and your fellow UnTourists felt like that. Hope to eat with you again soon :)

Celia was an amazing and knowledgeable host! She knows a lot about the history. She showed us around the magical hutongs and we tasted so many delicious typical Beijing foods of which many I hadn’t tried before but I can’t wait to have again. Also she showed us places where you would normally not end up. The group was fun - it was like hanging out with a group of friends. Book this tour! It’s worth it!

Hi Stevy - We’re so glad to hear you enjoyed both the food and the legends behind the dishes – and that you enjoyed meeting your fellow UnTourists! We honestly have the BEST guests in the world, and we love when the tour ends, but the friendships forged over food continue. Hope to see you again!

I had the pleasure to have this tour on Saturday of my business trip.
It was really really really good!!
First, the food was phenomenal! Like really good, authentic Chinese food, a couple of surprises... but also not too crazy.
Second, the locations were the real deal. I would never have entered most of them, and I really would have missed out. I saw no other tourists at all.
Third, the explanations and talk were genuine, and very interesting.
Cannot think of one thing that could be better.
10 out of 5 from me.

Dear Harry - Thank you very much for taking the time to review. We think the food on our tours is phenomenal too and we're very pleased you enjoyed it as much as we do.
We agree that the locations we visit are absolutely the real deal. So many of Beijing's best dishes are either tucked down quiet alleyways or hiding in plain sight. We aim to make them as accessible as possible and help visitors eat like locals.
We hope you'll have the opportunity to visit China again so we can show you even more of our fantastic neighborhood and its cuisine.

Wonderful dive into the amazing food and history of Beijing. So satiated, some of best meals I’ve ever had. Our tour guide Garth was friendly, knowledgeable, and a great dining companion for my wife and I. From small local family joints to street stalls to a trendy rice wine bar, a great variety. Easy to get to meeting point by subway. Very accommodating of dietary preferences. Good pacing.

I had a long day tour and was tired when I got back to Jinguo Hotel. I just wanted to some dinner and sleep when I realized I had a Old Beijing Dinner Tour with UnTour. I was worried that I would late so I went to the hotel concierge for a taxi ride. But for some strange reason the hotel concierge made up some lie about the hotel does not have taxis service. So I hit the street in search for a taxi ride. I approached a taxi. A strange man in the taxi took me to his car, which was a rip-off in the making. He got me to my destination but it cost 80 RMB, a taxi ride would been less than half the price. At the subway station I met a young American who led our tour. I believe his name was Zeben. While I am a Chinese-American I grew up in the US, and Beijing appeared a large, chaotic city with a fascinating new culture. Zeben did an excellent job picking places to eat from restaurants, to street vendors, to Chinese fast food (traditional). All the places he took me to were tasty and included a wonderful cultural experience with added information/stories from him. All the stops were memorable. My favorite was the Mongolian Hot Pot restaurant where we tried out the hot pot with its many items. Zebec also brought some Chinese Dumplings (not part of the restaurant, Zeben brought them for the guests as an added bonus for our tasting experience). Our last stop was an interesting local restaurant in an old Hutong neighborhood. The decor was fascinating and the owner seem to know our guide personally. The owner even showed his collection of grasshopper which he collected and trained for grasshopper combat competition. The place served tasty chicken wings (BBQ) style with strong Chinese rice wine, more like hard English whiskey/rubbing alcohol. I generally I do not drink hard liquor, but I wanted to try out a new experience. The aroma of the rice liquor was surprisingly fruity, pleasant aroma. I drank the small amount in my glass and I was fine at first. Slowly my mouth began to burn, then my throat burn, and then my esophagus began to burn. Shortly I lost my appetite and ate only one chicken wing. Still I would say it was a good experience. I learned that strong rice wine is not for me, and to be honest I had so much to eat I am not surprised I lost my appetite. Overall, I thought the dinner tour was an excellent experience. We tried out many types of food and got to see how the local Beijing people lived. Priceless. For the price and the amount food I got it was a great value. I would do it again with UnTour.

The best food tour we took in China. Our guide was Celia who met us at the entrance to the Metro. We found her to be very friendly, fun and quite knowledgeable about her city and its food. We first grabbed some takeout dumplings with skin so thin you could see thru it and brought them to a loud and authentic Mongolian hotpot place. The lamb and vegies were all good. From there it was onto an upscale rice wine bar for some delicious wine sampling. Yum!!!! Then onto donkey burgers - like small hamburgers except sweeter. She also introduced us to a favorite couple of street foods - one a crepe with fried tofu skin - out of this world and Mongolian yougert with honey. I would eat both of them every day if I could. After that we ate biang biang noodle soup with pork belly and vegies - good and the last was an old gambling den converted into a chicken wing place with fiery hot fried chicken wings. By the time we were done I was stuffed with great food and we were sad to say goodbye to Celia who was a terrific food guide! Do not miss this food tour! It is great!!

First off, Julia is an amazing guide and is super friendly and knowledgeable. She was happy to answer any questions we had and even emailed us some useful info about the questions we asked (relating to NYE). I'm a very fussy person when it comes to food (especially trying new things) but I absolutely LOVED this tour! It was fantastic, the food was delicious, the rest of the group were friendly and a good time was had. I would highly recommend this tour for anyone who isn't sure about eating in Beijing because this has helped us so much! One thing I would advise is to do this tour at the start of your time in Beijing not the end!

We had a total of 8 stops with some really extraordinary food options that you would never find by yourself like a traditional Mongolian hotpot on a coal oven, a hidden rice wine bar and a restaurant that was basically someone's living room in a Hutong.
Our host Julia gladly answered all our questions and even sent us an email afterwards with additional information about recipes and other things that we asked about.
She also let us take our time and in the end we were 45 minutes back later then planed, which made the trip feel more like an evening with a friend, than just a booked tour.

Hi Alex - thanks so much for your review! Our goal at UnTour Food Tours has always been to create an experience that feels more like hanging out with friends (albeit one who knows A LOT about Chinese food and culture) - that's why we called it "UnTour"! So it makes our day that you felt like you were amongst friends exploring the hutongs. Hope you'll eat with us again soon!

I booked this trip not really knowing what to expect so with some interpretation we turned up and was met by our host, Garth. He soon put us at ease. This man knows his food! His knowledge of the area and the places he took us were well thought about and he seemed to know what our pallets would like before we even tasted the food. To add to this, his knowledge of not just Beijing, but Chinese history and politics was immense. It was so enjoyable, the conversation, food, drinks and the company was amazing. I would recommend this tour a thousand times, preferably on your first night so you know what food you want to try for the rest of your trip. Thanks Garth, you made our trip extra special and Beijing will stick in our memories for years to come.

I am trying to book for next week, but I fail to see why you need everyones date of birth?? In this age of ID theft, there is no need for our dates of birth. If you want our ages thats fine, but I cant book without providing these. It is a party of 7 and I havent got the other family's dates of birth. But I want to book and confirm it now.

Hi Worrall Family!
Thanks for contacting UnTour Food Tours. We do not require the ages of your family on our website, but Viator does require this for all bookings on their platform - not sure why! There's no age restriction for our guests.
