Adventuring We Go

A wonderful culinary experience!
Apr 2020
We visited Beijing in July 2019 (sorry for the late review!) Our tour guide Julia was very informative and was able to answer all of our, and our 7 year old daughters questions about the food and areas we walked through. We enjoyed so many of the different food options it's hard to choose a favourite, but what made the the experience was eating in the restaurants and little pop-ups in the back streets where the locals usually eat. I particularly loved walking through the Hutongs and seeing streets and alleys you probably wouldn't normally walk down if you were just visiting a city. I felt we saw the real side of Beijing and not just the popular sights! My family and I highly recommend this tour!!

Educational, Exploratory, Fun Food Feast!
So glad I joined the small group tour, exploring hutongs and little food outlets I would never have come across otherwise. Kelly, our fantastic guide, was extremely knowledgeable about the food, it’s origins and it’s place in Chinese society. A great way to learn more about Chinese history whilst enjoying sumptuous snacks!

Authentic Cuisine and Cultural Experience
Dec 2019 • Family
I am a repeat customer of Untour. Always delighted. The food tours are one of the best ways to learn about China.

This tour takes you through the ancient hutong courtyards to sample the diverse array of breakfast foods.

The guides are knowledgeable and share the history as well as their personal knowledge.

Expect to try some dishes that you would never find on your own. I have ordered some of the dishes for breakfast during the remainder of my stay in China.

Meander through the courtyards to discover hidden local restaurants and watch the Beijingers begin their day. Learn about the history of the Hutongs and the dishes. There is a bit of walking at a leisurely pace with sit-down venues along the way.

The guides are Chinese or expats who have lived in Beijing for a decade. Their knowledge adds to the delightful experience. It is one of the reasons that I am a repeat customer.

Great for teenagers too. My 13 year old daughter loves these tours. They are by far the highlight of her experience in China.

This is a MUST DO event!

Amazing food in a place we would have never ventured
Nov 2019
Celia was the best. Food was amazing, her explanations were on point, and the tour far exceeded our expectations. It was so good, we went back to the same hutong the next morning for breakfast.

Hit all the local spots. Enjoyed lots of different foods and heard about the food and history. Leisurely stroll from spot to spot. Good was awesome. Garth went above and beyond by helpimg me understand how to get to train for the next leg of my trip and sent me detailed instructions and links to maps. Highly recommended.

Absolutely brilliant!!
Having done the dumpling tour in Shanghai we decided another Untour Food Tour was a must in Beijing and we weren’t disappointed. Garth, our guide, was fabulous, so knowledgeable about the history of the area and the types of food we were eating. We loved most of the food, and even quite enjoyed the fermented mung bean milk!! The Hutongs were fascinating, an area we never would have found if left to our own devices. Thanks Garth for such a great morning!!

Limited Vegan Options, Beware.
Sep 2019 • Friends
I decided upon this tour because I’d gone on other similar tours (not with UnTour) within China that were fabulous and catered well to my dietary choice. This tour did not meet my expectations, sadly. On three occasions I was unable to get an alternate dish as the vendor had either ran out of the vego option or it simply wasn’t possible to get anything else. On the stops where I was able to enjoy the food, we were only offered small amounts so I couldn’t even fill up at those stops. I wish it was made more transparent on the website (e.g that food options will be limited at times). I wish I had also checked TripAdvisor first! I felt the price was far too expensive for what I had and left feeling hungry. I also couldn’t believe my eyes when the tour guides stopped to show us grasshoppers that had been caught in teeny tiny cage for people to purchase simply so they can enjoy their own grasshopper chirping. Several members of our group were horrified and walked away. Probably not something to jovially and pointedly stop to share.

Hi Erin- thank you for reviewing your experience with UnTour. We are so sorry we did not meet your expectations. As mentioned when booking on the website, vegetarians & vegans are welcome, but there will be limited options. Unfortunately, due to the upcoming national holiday one of our vendors sold out of the vegan option early, and our guides let us know that you turned down several of the alternatives we offered at other stops. We always make substitutions where possible as we understand how hard it can be traveling through a country with a language barrier like China when you have dietary restrictions. We have worked hard to create experiences that are vegetarian- and vegan-friendly wherever possible. Please contact us directly so we can offer you a complimentary ticket on one of our other vegan-friendly tours. We hope you can join us again on our Old Beijing Dinner Tour, Shanghai Night Eat Tour, or Shanghai Street Eats Breakfast Tour all of which are vegetarian and vegan friendly!

Really Cool Tour with Amazing Guide
Sep 2019 • Solo
This is a must-do if you’re in Beijing. Delicious food and an interesting way to learn about the city’s culture and history and how to eat like a local. The tour guide Kelly was great- very friendly and knowledgeable and provided interesting background information on the food and places. This is off the beaten path - hutongs are alleys and a lot of these places would be very difficult to find outside of the tour. Also I had never heard of a breakfast tour but this was a really great experience.

Thank you very much for your kind review. I agree that the Hutongs are a MUST visit in Beijing and there is no better way to experience them than with tasty local breakfast treats! We hope to see you again on another tour in Beijing or Shanghai soon.

Untours Breakfast in Beijing – Do not miss!
Aug 2019
I arrived in Beijing on a Saturday in late August, and I was looking for a way to jump right in to the culture. This tour, set for the next morning, did the trick…and then some!

I met Julia, our tour guide, at a designated street corner conveniently located right outside of a major subway stop. Julia was very upbeat and friendly. She spoke wonderful English, which was perfect for our (all) American group of 5. We proceeded to weave through little neighborhoods (hutongs) and stop in little hole-in-the-wall local places that nobody would ever find on their own. Seeing those streets and neighborhoods is a big part of the fun, as they are NOT tourist areas.

The food stops consisted of everything from delectable fried dough sticks dipped in sugar/soy milk to mung bean juice. And many more things in between, many of which you would not think of as “breakfast”. We always received a full explanation about the types of food, where and why it was served, and in some cases, how lucky we were to get to eat that food. Many places are so popular with locals that they sell out within hours in the morning.

Believe it or not, a few bites here and there over three hours really makes you full…I literally could not eat another thing the ENTIRE day! Julia was wonderful and we had such a great time. I highly recommend this tour. DO NOT eat anything prior to the tour! Have fun.

Thank you so much for your amazing review – you really made our day! The best way to dive into Beijing culture is to explore the Hutongs and all of the amazing food that has been feeding the neighborhoods for decades. Hope to see you again soon, maybe in Shanghai this time!

Perfect way to start your Beijing experience
Aug 2019
First, kudos to Untour for hosting the tour even with only 2 people. I've had tours cancel because a minimum amount of customers couldn't be met.

Ricky, our guide, was superb. He explained each dish and some of the history of the hutong. The stops were all definitely unique and local! I recommend this tour as a Day 1 experience for anyone who comes to Beijing.
