About the operator
- savlou2200My favorite part of my trip to Beijing! This was genuinely my favorite part of my trip to Beijing. I’m a major foodie and plan my trips around food, so it was wonderful to be able to try so many different traditional dishes while also hearing about their history. These locations are incredibly unique—some that I never would have found on my own. It was the perfect balance of different flavors, different beverages, and socializing. Garth was our tour guide and I could not stress enough how incredible he was. I left feeling entertained, informed, and wanting more! We did the old Beijing dinner tour, but if I ever find myself back in the city, I will definitely be booking the breakfast tour. I 100% recommend this experience for anyone visiting Beijing!
- 742juliay00Fantastic food tour!!I had such a great time on this tour! Each stop was authentic and delicious. It was clear that locals truly eat at these restaurants. Garth was an incredible guide, sharing history about the food and China. Not only was it informative, but a very fun dinner!
- Willie P00Best food, best guide, best night! If you’re looking for good food and a great time, look no further than this tour. We did the Old Beijing dinner tour and I seriously cannot recommend this enough for anyone traveling to Beijing. Garth went above and beyond to give us a phenomenal and traditional culinary experience with a nice dose of history to go with it. Be sure to save room at the end for the chicken wings - they will be unlike any you’ve ever had before! Thank you Garth for making us feel at home even though from halfway around the world, it truly was a memory and experience of a lifetime.
- Michaele500Outstanding culinary and cultural experienceOur guide - Garth - showed us places only a long-time resident like him could know: Small restaurants and snack shops serving the most delicious, typical and varied food (and plenty of it, too). Most of the dishes were prepared on order within minutes right in front of us. The pace of the tour was well-planned, no wait-time and no haste either. Food was a well-balanced mix of street food and sit-down restaurants plus a stop at a unique rice wine distillery. In addition to enjoying a great culinary experience we gained insight into Chinese history, society, economy, culture; Garth has deep expertise on these matters and shared it in a considered, articulate manner. Fyi, we also booked the Hutong Breakfast Tour with Garth before and posted a review on TripAdvisor, and two more tours in Shanghai with the same company Untour Foods.
- 930amritav00Great food and guide! We had a great Old Beijing Dinner Tour with Garth! The food was delicious, and we explored many local places that we never would have found on our own. Garth was an excellent guide, sharing his experiences and Beijing history, while creating a really unique and authentic experience for us. We had such a good time that we booked another UnTour experience in Chengdu for the following week. We would definitely recommend to anyone wanting to go a little deeper in terms of Beijing food culture and eat really yummy food!
- 181harrya00Awesome & authentic tourI had the pleasure to have this tour on Saturday of my business trip. It was really really really good!! First, the food was phenomenal! Like really good, authentic Chinese food, a couple of surprises... but also not too crazy. Second, the locations were the real deal. I would never have entered most of them, and I really would have missed out. I saw no other tourists at all. Third, the explanations and talk were genuine, and very interesting. Cannot think of one thing that could be better. 10 out of 5 from me.
- 925ankurd00Best Beijing time for the hungry and the curious!Wonderful dive into the amazing food and history of Beijing. So satiated, some of best meals I’ve ever had. Our tour guide Garth was friendly, knowledgeable, and a great dining companion for my wife and I. From small local family joints to street stalls to a trendy rice wine bar, a great variety. Easy to get to meeting point by subway. Very accommodating of dietary preferences. Good pacing.
- jannikacao00Great experience with tasty food and stories about Beijing and the Hutong area that you did not know! This tour is highly recommended. It is a great way to learn about the history of Beijing while walking around in the cozy Hutong area and eating local food. The food and drinks were really tasty and definitely things from the menu that we would not have ordered ourselves. Don’t be afraid of going hungry to bed, because this will not happen after this tour! We had a lot of different dishes served in different places that we would never have found and we were really full at the end. Besides the great food, we also enjoyed getting to know more about the Hutong area of Beijing. Our guide new a lot about the area and history of the city and could answer all the questions that we had. There were so many things that surprised us about the history. It was a good balance of great food and history without getting bored 😊 If you are a food lover this tour is a must do in Beijing. The food we ate on this tour was actually the most tasty food we had on our vacation in Beijing.
- PBlyth00Terrific Dinner Food TourThe best food tour we took in China. Our guide was Celia who met us at the entrance to the Metro. We found her to be very friendly, fun and quite knowledgeable about her city and its food. We first grabbed some takeout dumplings with skin so thin you could see thru it and brought them to a loud and authentic Mongolian hotpot place. The lamb and vegies were all good. From there it was onto an upscale rice wine bar for some delicious wine sampling. Yum!!!! Then onto donkey burgers - like small hamburgers except sweeter. She also introduced us to a favorite couple of street foods - one a crepe with fried tofu skin - out of this world and Mongolian yougert with honey. I would eat both of them every day if I could. After that we ate biang biang noodle soup with pork belly and vegies - good and the last was an old gambling den converted into a chicken wing place with fiery hot fried chicken wings. By the time we were done I was stuffed with great food and we were sad to say goodbye to Celia who was a terrific food guide! Do not miss this food tour! It is great!!
- pannsen00Super tasty local food -- lots!We booked this tour due to a recommendation of a colleague of mine. We did not regret this. Our tour guide Celia (a local from Beijing with perfect English skills) led us to places we usually wouldn't have entered or even recognized as a restaurant. The choice of food an drinks was superb. Our favourite was the Mongolian Hot Pot. Celia was really nice and added much to the atmosphere by explaining local customs, stories about the Hutongs and the history of the meals served. At the end of the day we ware totally stuffed and happy.
- STEVYSTEVYSTEVY00Celia is amazing! This tour is so much fun and so delicious!Celia was an amazing and knowledgeable host! She knows a lot about the history. She showed us around the magical hutongs and we tasted so many delicious typical Beijing foods of which many I hadn’t tried before but I can’t wait to have again. Also she showed us places where you would normally not end up. The group was fun - it was like hanging out with a group of friends. Book this tour! It’s worth it!
- stevenharz00Fun & Insider tourCelia is great fun to be around and she knows how to turn a group of strangers into instant friends for a night. There are tour guide who're in it for the money, Celia isn't one of them. She's the real deal and knows her stuff, not just the stuff she shows you but any question you might have will be answered thoroughly. Expect to taste real local cuisine and gain access to spots you won't get into as a laowei
- xxzz987700Highly recommended for discovering Beijing food!We had a great time on this tour, led by Celia who knew so much about the real Beijing, and adapted the tour to our interests. The tour visited some classic sites, ticking off all the boxes we had for food we wanted to check out. And Celia provided us with extra information to do our own exploring afterwards. Absolutely worth the time and the cost. In a city where it can be a bit difficult to know where to go for the 'classics', this is a great introduction - highly recommended.
- 38lianaw00Great local experience! We had a wonderful night with our guide Celia. Celia is a local Beijinger so we were able to get a true local experience. Every dish on the tour was unique and delicious. Would definitely recommend to all travelers who are interested in an authentic Beijing culinary experience.
- Shelby T00Authentic Chinese Cuisine!First off, Julia is an amazing guide and is super friendly and knowledgeable. She was happy to answer any questions we had and even emailed us some useful info about the questions we asked (relating to NYE). I'm a very fussy person when it comes to food (especially trying new things) but I absolutely LOVED this tour! It was fantastic, the food was delicious, the rest of the group were friendly and a good time was had. I would highly recommend this tour for anyone who isn't sure about eating in Beijing because this has helped us so much! One thing I would advise is to do this tour at the start of your time in Beijing not the end!

I really enjoyed the Breakfast food tour and Garth was a wonderful tour guide! If you are interested in trying new dishes at off-the-beaten-path places you will love this tour. We tried 10+ different foods, both sweet and savory, and toured all over the Hutong. Garth took me to tons of places to try foods I never would have tried in my own. He shared interesting history about both Beijing and the food we ate and had tons of great information about the area. Really a can’t miss tour whether you’ve just come to Beijing or have been here before! And you definitely won’t leave hungry!

Dear EB - Thank you for taking the time to review the Hutong Breakfast Tour. We think it’s unmissable too! We love getting out into the neighborhood in the mornings to see who’s cooking what and where the tastiest breakfast items are being served. Even more, we love sharing our discoveries with friends and visitors, so we’re really glad you enjoyed exploring as much as we do. We’d love to see you again for the Old Beijing Dinner Tour next time you’re in Beijing or come visit us in Shanghai. We’ve got many more great restaurants and great dishes we’d love to show you. Thanks again!

So glad I joined the small group tour, exploring hutongs and little food outlets I would never have come across otherwise. Kelly, our fantastic guide, was extremely knowledgeable about the food, it’s origins and it’s place in Chinese society. A great way to learn more about Chinese history whilst enjoying sumptuous snacks!

I really recommend this tour. Our guide Garth was very knowledgeable of Chinese food, culture, history. You can tell there is a lot of work and passion behind selecting every stop and dish during the tour. I wish I had unlimited storage as everything we tasted was incredible!

Dear Pasquale - Thank you for your recommendation! We too wish our guests could have unlimited storage so we could share every single fantastic local dish available at breakfast time. Instead, we need to carefully curate them all to make sure every dish we share is worth the room it takes up. It’s a tough job, but someone has to do it. We’re thrilled to hear you enjoyed them all!

Garth is the perfect host. His choice of breakfasts and their locations were spot-on. Lovely tasty food from dumplings in local restaurants to street food kiosks. I got real insights into the food and also the local neighbourhood. All complemented by his expert insights into the food preparation and history. Unforgettable experience and I highly recommend it,

We did the breakfast food tour with Julia and it was fantastic. There were so many things to try that we were stuffed by the time we finished. Julia also gave us lots of great advice for the rest of our vacation which was greatly appreciated. If you’re looking for a unique and fun food tour this is a great choice.

Celia was the best. Food was amazing, her explanations were on point, and the tour far exceeded our expectations. It was so good, we went back to the same hutong the next morning for breakfast.

I arrived in Beijing on a Saturday in late August, and I was looking for a way to jump right in to the culture. This tour, set for the next morning, did the trick…and then some!
I met Julia, our tour guide, at a designated street corner conveniently located right outside of a major subway stop. Julia was very upbeat and friendly. She spoke wonderful English, which was perfect for our (all) American group of 5. We proceeded to weave through little neighborhoods (hutongs) and stop in little hole-in-the-wall local places that nobody would ever find on their own. Seeing those streets and neighborhoods is a big part of the fun, as they are NOT tourist areas.
The food stops consisted of everything from delectable fried dough sticks dipped in sugar/soy milk to mung bean juice. And many more things in between, many of which you would not think of as “breakfast”. We always received a full explanation about the types of food, where and why it was served, and in some cases, how lucky we were to get to eat that food. Many places are so popular with locals that they sell out within hours in the morning.
Believe it or not, a few bites here and there over three hours really makes you full…I literally could not eat another thing the ENTIRE day! Julia was wonderful and we had such a great time. I highly recommend this tour. DO NOT eat anything prior to the tour! Have fun.

Thank you so much for your amazing review – you really made our day! The best way to dive into Beijing culture is to explore the Hutongs and all of the amazing food that has been feeding the neighborhoods for decades. Hope to see you again soon, maybe in Shanghai this time!

First, kudos to Untour for hosting the tour even with only 2 people. I've had tours cancel because a minimum amount of customers couldn't be met.
Ricky, our guide, was superb. He explained each dish and some of the history of the hutong. The stops were all definitely unique and local! I recommend this tour as a Day 1 experience for anyone who comes to Beijing.

We spent the morning with Julia. She was amazing at guiding us through the hutongs and explaining all of the different types of foods that we ate. We had quite a variety of foods and all of them were delicious (even those that I likely won't eat again). The tour is easily worth the price as we ended up being too full to eat lunch! I would gladly do another UnTour food tour. I recommend Julia for anyone booking the Breakfast tour. She was great and a huge part of our enjoying the tour.

Thanks so much for your review, Garrett. I firmly believe that one of the best things about going on food tours is having the opportunity to try a range of food in a short time, and that's even better in China where most dishes are served family-style so you get to try even more! Hope to see you again, maybe in Shanghai this time.
