It is one of the greatest wonders of the world and when you see it there is no need to question why. We visited the Mutianyu section a 1/2 hrs trip from Beijing. Exceptional as was our tour guide Ivy from China Highlights (see review China Highlights).

When you're in China, you really do have to go and see this incredible place. I've been twice now, the first time, I went to the Mutianyu section, but the tour didn't include the Ming Tombs and Silk Factory, just the Jade Factory and the Walls. So I would recommend the Badaling tour over the other. I also found the views more impressive here, though it would perhaps be remiss of me to not consider that the weather was much better this time around, and the visibility was greater. The wall itself is incredible, and I learnt on a documentary that the cement holding the bricks together contains human bones, all ground up.

Pros:
It was fast, they picked up, and left us next to our hotel, it was low season so only the two of us on the tour.
Cons:
The guide and driver think you are:
1) ignorant
2) stupid
3) full of money
4) they want to finish as early as possible
5) they don't give a sh*t about you
The guide did the minimum explanation and pushed us through the full tour to go faster, so they both could finish early and go home. They convinced us to go on a different part of the wall because of "parking problems" for the part of the wall we wanted to visit. We hade 1h30 on the wall, which was quite short, and after that the food was bad. The tea and jade shops are mandatory stops that were not advertised beforehand, and are completely useless.

The tour information is deceiving. The tour could have been shortened by 3 hours if we weren’t forced to tour a Jade “factory” and Tea room. While the Jade factory was mentioned in the tour description, it was in context of during a lunch. The first stop was a 1.5 hr factory visit while we waited for people to shop and the tour guide to get his cut. Then at lunch (which was very bad) there was another Jade “factory” that we had to walk through. There was no mention of a Tea tasting (another sales gimmick) yet we spent over an hour at the end of the day.
Jackie Lie was a bad guide. Very bad English and he repeated himself over and over like a tape recording. He has been doing it to long.
We won’t book Viator again!

Our tour guide was awesome. She was a spunky lady who has definitely done her share of tours. Sometimes it was very obviously scripted, but that was ok! She's very proactive in taking pictures for the group and is a pro at setting that panorama shot with your iPhone (lol).
Be sure to read the instructions well because I had not realized that I was supposed to contact the company prior to the tour, but after booking it. Luckily, they were trying to get in contact with me as well and through our powers combined, we made it work!
I'd definitely go on a tour with this company again!

Jackie seems pleasant enough. His accent was very thick, and he spoke so fast it was hard to understand him. Apparently I was not the only one that couldn't understand much of what he said. When others would ask a question about something he had already said, he would chide them (playfully, but still annoyingly) for not listening. He also went on about how in ancient China big feet meant ugly girt. So he pointed out several females on the tour and said, you see, you have big feet, you ugly. Again, this was in a playful manner, but at least one of the women was visibly annoyed. He was helpful, took many pictures for the group. And the Wall and Tomb and Eating experiences were superb.

Han Tours was great: they (1) notified us at the hotel the night before to confirm pickup time, which was exact. (2) provided an excellent Tour Guide, Zoe, who not only provided information on the sights but also relevant and real life comments & candid discussions on life in China, (3) a driver who was adept in Beijing traffic (which is something in itself), and (4) for very little costs - ya go head try do it yourself. lol
Yes, there are two shopping stops which most wouldn’t choose. If you don’t understand that this is what makes the tour cheaper, there are options. But for the ground you cover, the skill and effort of the guide and driver- this is an excellent value!

This was the experience of a lifetime and on my bucket list. I enjoyed it more than i thought I would. It was cold the morning we went in early March but warmed up during our walk along the wall. The view was spectacular. I was so happy to share this experience with my husband who I met on my 14th birthday. I am now 67 and he is 69.

The tour guide Alice, was amazing. She is very knowledgeable, friendly and accommodating. She stopped by the hotel the night before confirming the pick up time and were given a choice of which entrance we wanted to go to (there are a few). It was a weekend and was bound to be busy so we decided for the quieter Juyongguan section. The group was small (only 5 of us) and the ride was smooth. On the way back we stopped at a jade factory, got a few souvenirs, had lunch upstairs and headed out for the emperor toms. Once done we went of to a tea ceremony, tasted some very nice teas and headed back to the hotel. Would highly recommend the tour but also recommend you book in advance.

You would have to confirm with the tour provider but my experience is that they are very accommodating regarding the pick up locations. Our tour was small, only three people. My wife and I were picked up at our hotel lobby.
