I gave this an average rating only because the sites themselves are so interesting. I would've given this a zero rating if I were just rating the tour operator. We bought this tour through Viator. Nowhere on their tour details does it say anything about a shopping stop other than the jade factory, which is also where lunch is provided (as it turned out). What I didn't know was that right after Tiananmen Square and the Forbidden City, our next stop was a silk factory. We were shown a five minute explanation of how the silk is made, then led into their shop. Unfortunately, we allowed ourselves to be talked into buying silk comforters which turned out not to fit our American king size beds. Because we were hesitant about buying, we asked over and over about the sizing and were assured they were fit. They don't. The shop, which is called something like Yuan Hou (at least that's how it is on my credit card) is totally disreputable. I tried to deal with them after I returned and realized that the size was wrong, and they eventually offered new ones if I'd pay to ship which I agreed to. They then insisted on a wire transfer, which I refused to do. Be aware that Visa will NOT stand behind customers...they are merchant driven and back them over the customer, asking for things that do not exist, like credit vouchers I never got.
Back to the tour. After the silk factory (where our tour guide must have been disappointed at his cut of the sales, as we were with a group of young men who weren't interested in buying), we headed to...the jade store. Again, we were given a brief overview of jade, then ushered into the shop where there were a lot of sales people pushing for sales. Then lunch, then to the Great Wall, where we spent about an hour or so...the tour guide just sent us off on our own, so if you expect to be led and have things explained, you'll be disappointed. After the Great Wall, we headed back...to a tea shop, where we tasted some tea and then led into their shop. The tea stop was for sure the most profitable for our guide, as it was something the guys were interested in. Then back toward Beijing with traffic that was so bad that the guide suggested we get out and take public transportation like a taxi or subway to our respective hotels. A couple of the more adventurous guys did that, but there was no way we were going to do it, having no idea where we were or how to get to our hotel. About a mile later, we happened to be next to another tour bus and we were instructed to get off and get onto theirs as they were heading towards our hotel faster than our bus was. Their bus was new and much nicer than ours, which was pretty old and beat up. Between being sold something that was completely the wrong size, being suggested to three shopping stops when we could have spent more time at the attractions, leads me to advise people to avoid this tour operator as it seems making sales commission is more important than guiding. Plus, the quality of the bus seems to vary widely. And being told to take a taxi back after paying 80+ dollars for a tour per person is adding insult to injury. Avoid if you can, but if not, don't buy ANYTHING at the silk factory.

I'll restrict my comments to the practicalities of the tour, since the enjoyment of the sights themselves is completely subjective. Our guide was pleasant, informative, efficient, and spoke English very well. I had to meet up with everybody at a hotel in the city center at 7:30AM because my hotel was not on the route. The mini bus was comfortable. There were 3 other participants on the my tour - from Indonesia and Australia - and that was fun. I wouldn't have attempted this tour without a guide.

Know in advance that you'll be taken to the shops (silk, jade, and tea, in my case) for an informative lecture and shopping. Knowing this in advance was important to me (my hotel concierge tipped me off) as otherwise, I might have been put off by the commercialism. We spent more time at each shop than we did at Tiananmen Square, FYI.

Ladies, bring tissues or toilet paper, as the public toilets don't usually have it. Bring your own water bottle. Be prepared for strenuous climbing at the Great Wall. I'm super-fit and still found it hard work. Going down is harder than going up. My GPS watch told me I walked about 8.5 miles that day, so wear good shoes.

So long as you know you'll have the commercial aspect, it's a tour worth taking. I understood from my hotel concierge that a similar tour can be arranged without the shops, but it costs at least 2x as much.

We scheduled a full day tour which included Tiananmen Square, The Forbidden City and The Great Wall. The tour was advertised as a full day excursion and we were picked up promptly at 7:15 at our hotel by our docent Cynthia it was a short ride to the parking lot at Tiananmen Square were we disembarked and proceeded and headed on foot to the main entrance of the Square. It was at this moment, I knew that my life was over. We rounded the corner and I looked down the street to the horizon and still did not see the entrance to Tiananmen Square. The trek down the street was a gorgeous one because the street was lined with beautiful flowers and shruberies. And as I gasped for breath and felt the searing pain in my hips, I thought to myself “ this is not a bad place to have a massive heart attack”. I must say at this point, that my wife and I have taken 100s of tours but it has been 30 years since we took a walking tour. So in all fairness, shame on us. I can’t tell you much about the tour because I could not hear Cynthia over my wheezing. And when I wasn’t wheezing, I was so far behind I could only see her waving that yellow flag at me and calling my name. At this point, we had made it to The Forbidden City and Cynthia had transformed from a tour guide to an emergency room nurse. I was failing fast and in sympathy for her loving husband, my wife decided to have a heat stroke. We were a saaaaad sight. From this point to the other end of the Forbidden City, the tour turned from a tour to the Trail of Tears. It was a series of rest stops, sips of water and dragging a leg. Cynthia literally took us on her back and got us through The Forbidden City. At this point, she frantically hailed down a cab, poured us into it. As we drove away, I could see the relief on her face and her lips mouthing “Thank God they didn’t die on my watch”. Needless to say, we didn’t make it to the Great Wall of China that day. After reassessing our health, we decided that private tours are better for us.

It's a full day, the forbidden city is huge, you really can't appreciate how big the place is until you've been. And Tiananmen square is again massive. When you go to the great wall, see if the guide can take you to the unrestored part, it's as it was and there's no crowds, you really don't want crowds when your trying to climb those massive steps, one foot in front of the other

First of all, our tour guide was wonderful. She made every effort to educate us on the culture and traditions of her homeland. Her English was good and personality was kind and friendly. Tiannamen square was amazing and we were lucky enough to be there to see the changing of the guard. The forbidden city, no fault to the tour company was insanely crowded and we rushed through shoving crowds and in hot conditions so not to say it wasn’t impressive but aside from a few nice photos didn’t get much out of the tour. I can only say go off-season or this is what to expect. The Great Wall however is amazing and worth every minute we spent there. It’s a really tough climb but worth it. There were two stops- a jade factory with lunch and a tea house both with nice presentation then high pressure sales which often accompany tours like this. Goods can be bought for 25% of their asking price which we did later in our stay at many stores and markets so it’s not worth the magic they weave when there. Overall it’s a good experience and I can’t speculate how to improve it much as the conditions dictate a large part of it. I recommend this group wholeheartedly.

Good way to see as many things as possible within one day. You should be aware that it is stressfull and they will bring you to some attractions you are not dealing with.

I booked this tour instead of my hotel tour , and reached the hotel 30 minutes prior to the departure time . They told me they couldn’t accommodate me since I booked the night before and left me to fend for myself.

They were absolutely of no help to even arrange an alternate tour or transport for me . I ended up making my own arrangements and wasting a lot of time and money.
