My partner and I landed in Beijing the night before and we wanted to experience Chinese cuisine the next day so we booked this tour in. Jimmy met us in the lobby of our hotel on time and with a friendly welcome. Together we walked and talked as he informed us of the history and lifestyle of those who live the city. Jimmy took some extra time to find a place that served donkey burgers, which were amazing to our surprise, before leading us to a variety of restaurants that were popular with the locals.
We especially loved the walk through the Hutong's, where Jimmy explained the old ways in which the people used to live. Jimmy was also kind enough to walk us to the metro where he taught us how to purchase tickets and read the map.
My partner and I loved this tour, we recommend this tour for anyone wanting to experience Beijing as a local!

Anson was a perfect host for this local food tour the 3 of us booked for our first night in Beijing. He guided us to some great local food outlets in Dongsi, close to our hotel on Wangfujing street: Bejing lamb burger, Kebap (Eggplant Kebap was amazing), Szechuan soup and finished off with some new year's 'Donkey rolling on the ground' dessert.
Anson had a lot of great stories about the food and the neighborhood.
The tour was focused on good food in local down to earth restaurants and allowed each of us to eat to his/her level of adventure.
I also recommend to do the tour on the first night, as Anson gave us good tips where to head for the following nights.

I was a bit nervous since I was traveling alone, but Jimmy showed up 30 minutes early to pick me up at the hotel (note you can only be picked up at hotels within a certain distance from the tour area). He was super friendly and so easy to talk to. We ate a ton of delicious food and when I was too full we would walk a bit to make space for more :) At one point I asked if we would be eating food with red bean paste and he went out of his way to find a couple treats for me that weren’t part of the tour. I HIGHLY recommend this tour, with Jimmy.

We have been to China a number of times, but have not have many opportunities to try street foods. It's a little hard if you're unfamiliar with the area to know which street foods to try and from where. Becky helped us a lot with that, in addition to providing any historical or cultural background that goes with the food. We were able to be as adventurous as we wanted, and felt encouraged to go outside our comfort zone. Would definitely recommend it!

Anson met me and my husband at our hotel and we walked to Dongsi. He is really knowledgeable about the food and the history of the Hutong area. We experienced all kind of food in that stretch of Beijing and Anson explained the origins, traditions and how to eat them. It was a great night out for us and we returned to some of the places he showed us in the following days. Needless to say that the food was amazing and at the end of the evening we were full.
He also indulged me in writing down some of the dishes I liked most so I was able to order them again when I was on my own. Definitely will call him again if we return to Bejing. Thanks Anson!

If I can offer one piece of advice for your trip it would be to book a private food tour with Lucy. As a first time visitor to Beijing, I visited all the main attractions; I wanted to experience the culture, but I didn’t know anyone. Lucy took me to several food stops and beyond tasting the different foods, she talked about the history and culture behind the food, which was so interesting. We definitely went to some places off the beaten path and walking through the hutong and learning about the history was such a highlight of my trip.
I learned so much from Lucy about Chinese customs, culture, history...if you’re a foodie, you will definitely enjoy this tour, but it is so much more than that.
I would recommend this tour to anyone visiting Beijing. It was the highlight of my visit by far.

We loved that this tour was private-just our friends! Our tour guide was Jimmy. He was so much fun to be with. He fit right in with our group. His English is amazing. His stories and knowledge of the local culture and food made the tour so much fun! He definitely introduced us to foods we had never seen or tried before. He always asked us how we felt about certain foods. He never pushed us to try something. He would just order something else if there was a dish we just felt we couldn’t try. This tour is definitely local food!! It was an amazing adventure! I highly recommend this tour!!

Ended up being a nice tour for a solo traveler. I had limited time and they were able to work me into the schedule on short notice. My guide Cactus was an excellent host for my evening of eating in Beijing. I tried more types of food than I could have possibly imagined beforehand!

Hi - what time does the tour start? Trying to figure out if I can get into a tour on Friday Sept 20.

Hi, when I took this tour, it was a private tour so I could nominate the time it began. I think if you get in touch with the tour operator directly they will sort it out. Ask for Lucy - she was a great guide.

We booked our food walking tour through Expedia. We did the Bizarre food 4 hr. walking tour. It was a good tour, however we walked about 1.5 miles from our hotel at night and once we were done our guide left us to return on our own while he went home. We could have taken a cab but with the language barrier, it's easy to be scammed by cabbies. So we walked and in Oct/Nov it's cold. Beware that when you book tours you're hotel must be within the 2nd ring road to be picked up by the tour otherwise you'll need to walk or cab to a location within the 2nd ring rd. READ THE FINE PRINT of your tour. All in all we did have a good time and experienced a culture well worth all the little problems.

Can you clarify about the price? One place it says from $34 but when I wen to find out about scheduling, there was only a $148 option. What does that include?

The pricing on all the tours in China is very confusing. The quoted price essentially assumes that a full tour group is going. Thus the "from...$(quoted cost)" - Invariably, when you actually try to book, the price is suddenly much more.
It does include all the food. You just pay what you paid for the tour. But, yeah - you kind of need to pretend to book the tour to find out how much it will really be.

How long is the tour?
we are planning to do it with our 2 kids (8 and 4 years old) and we're afraid it might be too intensive for them.
and the last question is regarding the food: can the tour can be without pork and sea food (just cheicken, beef and vegetarian stuff)?

Oops! I think I answered your question regarding the cooking lesson. The hutong walking tour to different restaurants is not appropriate for the kids, and not for the faint of heart re: unusual foods. We paid for our own taxi to the starting point. So if your question is about the walking tour of different restaurants, I think different tour might be better with such young kids.

Hi, does the price include hotel pick-up? Because it says in the tour selection, Tour starts at 17:30. YOUR GUIDE WILL PICK YOU UP FROM YOUR HOTEL'S LOBBY. How long is the tour? Does it include alcoholic beverages?

Beware! Most, if not all tours claim they will only pick you up from your hotel ONLY if your hotel is within the 2nd ring rd. If not, you will have to cab or walk to a location within the 2nd ring rd. Read the fine print of your tour! We re-booked our hotel to within the 2nd ring rd to avoid the hassle with our tours.
