This was by far the best part of our trip to Beijing!

We had always planned to check out the Great Wall and got so many different suggestions that we procrastinated to book anything. Finally, while we were in Beijing, we decided to check out our options online. We figured we'd book a private tour being that you spend enough time with huge crowds staying in Beijing + this was right around Chinese Labor Day vacation.

This trip is great for people who enjoy hiking and being outdoors. We spent a little less than 4 hours total hiking upto the wall and getting back to the car. We stopped quite a bit to take pics, use the restroom, and to wait in line for the Tobbogan. We were told that it usually takes closer to 5 hours (so overall trip is going to be around 9/10 hours from pick-up to drop-off).

The hike up to the wall was not the most difficult hike we've ever done but it wasn't super easy (also depends on the weather). My favorite part of the trip was the beginning when we hiked up to the wall and got to the first parts of the wall and the first tower. It's truly breathtaking to see the views (remembering that a mere 2 hours ago you were in the middle of Beijing where you hardly see any greenery + some days can't even see the sky because of the smog).

When you get to the Mutianyu area it does get a little more crowded. Most of the people who you run into there are taking a quick trip up the cable car and back. When you're going back down you're given 3 options-- take the cable car back (if you're super tired do this), hike the rest of the way down (walk down a little further) or if you're up for it, you can go down a tobbogan slide (walking the furthest down). We did the tobbogan ride and it was awesome! It was roughly $20 USD per person so bring extra cash for this if you are interested.

Our tour guide Miko was great! We noticed during our stay in Beijing that not many people spoke fluent or even conversational English. It was nice to have a private tour guide who could answer our questions about the Great Wall and give us some insight on Bejing in general + way of life in the city. He let us take all of the time we needed for pics and volunteered to help us take a bunch too!

Miko brought us to a great restaurant that was on our way back from The Great Wall. It's about 30 minutes out from the area you finish at. It was pretty busy considering the random time of day we were there-- which is always a good sign to me! Food was some of the best we've had while we were in Beijing!

Suggestions:
- Wear sneakers (duh) and if you are able to pack them, bring your hiking shoes. They provided us with some poles but we opted to go without them.
- They provide you water, snacks along the way, and a lunch. Doesn't hurt to bring some extra water, sunblock (not going to get a lot of shade anywhere on the wall), bug spray (hiking up it was a little buggy), allergy medicine or nasal spray if you have allergies, pack of tissue paper/cottonelle for the restrooms, and a light rain coat (depending on what time of year you're going).
- Extra cash for tip + Tobbogan slide and/or cable car.

Great Wall, whichever part you wanted to visit he is the man to go to. We chose to take the cable car up and down and walk the Wall from Mutianyu to Jiankou - it was unbelievable, words just can't express how amazing the whole experience was. The views, the feel of the history in every step and stone. We didn't want to leave, it was so magnificent. We would highly recommend Jonny for whatever part of the wall you want to visit, the difficult for the very fit, or the more gentle parts for the not so fit. He does overnight camping on the wall, whatever you choose to do you will enjoy.

We woke early and met Jack in the lobby of our hotel. From start to finish Jack was professional, friendly and very informative. His English is excellent. Our three daughters aged 8-14 loved the 5 hour hike up to and along The Great wall. Jack could not have been nicer to them and answered all of their many questions and even told them old stories about the wall. Seeing the wall from non restored to restored was fantastic and we all agreed that we preferred the old section. This walk is steep and you need a certain level of fitness but is absolutely a fantastic way to see The Great Wall of China. The toboggan ride at the end was super fun and the perfect way to get down. Our driver waited for us at the end and took us to a delicious local restaurant for a late lunch. We have never eaten so much food! Very generous and delicious. Thanks Jack for a brilliant day. It was one of our favourites from our 3 week trip away!

Our guide, Peter, was awesome! He was warm, friendly, and knowledgeable about the Great Wall and Chinese history. He did a great job assessing when we needed a rest and would use that time to tell us something interesting about the area or the language. I have celiac disease and he even called the chef ahead of time and gave instructions on what I could eat. As a result, I had the best meal of our stay in a lovely restaurant. The Great Wall itself was amazing and hiking the ruins was the experience of a lifetime. We are so happy we chose this tour and had Peter for our guide. If you like going off the beaten path then this is the trip for you!

My wife and I recently spent several nights in Beijing and this tour of the great wall was easily the highlight of our entire trip. We were collected early in the morning by our superbly friendly, funny and knowledgeable tour guide Miko, as well as our equally nice driver. As we drove out of the city, Miko shared with us the rich and fascinating history of the wall and even gave us a crash course on how to count in Mandarin! We started our hike on the outskirts of a small village and got to experience the beauty of the wilderness as we made our way up to the wall. We're not hugely experienced hikers but Miko was very patient with us and allowed us to set the pace and take frequent breaks. When we reached the mountain peak we arrived at a battlement of the Jiankou section of the wall and were treated to incredible views of the wall snaking out endlessly across the mountain ranges and into the distance. Here we walked along the unrestored section of the wall and saw the remnants of the original structures as well as getting fantastic panoramic views of the mountains. Since a hike is required to get up to Jiankou, this section of the wall is less heavily populated by tourists so we got to soak up the views all to ourselves! Along the way Miko also gave us more detailed history about the functions of the wall as well as a retelling of a classic folk story about the wall. As we crossed to Mutianyu the restored wall sections became apparent which allowed us to visualise the past grandeur of the epic structure. Reaching the end of our walk we opted to get the cable cars down to the base which were relatively cheap and gave us some good views of the wall. Afterwards, we were driven to a local restaurant on the outskirts of Beijing and treated to a feast of amazing food. My wife is vegetarian, so Miko very kindly organised meal options for her too. We finished the day with full bellies and a truly unforgettable experience. I don't exaggerate when I say this tour is incredible and a MUST DO for anyone visiting Beijing. Unlike a simple visit to Mutianyu, with this tour you get see a side of the wall not visited quite as frequently by tourists, giving you access to stunning views and a real glimpse into the past when the wall stood tall and grand. Additionally, our tour guide Miko made this trip even more enjoyable and exciting and helped us to understand and appreciate the beauty, significance and importance of the Great Wall.

We did this day trip with our 8-year old son and he hiked this section no problem.

Our guide Dennis and his driver picked us up at our hotel in a new minivan. It was a private tour for just our family. Dennis gave us great history all the way to the Wall. He spoke excellent English and gave very clear expectations. There was never any up-selling or awkward moments that sometimes accompany a tour. Everything was very easy and professional with this company. I highly recommend! Dennis was superb.

This is a fair bit of hiking - much of it uphill. If you are in bad shape, it will hurt but it's doable. If you are in moderate shape, you'll be sore in the calf muscles. If you are in great shape, it's a breeze.

This is a WAY better option than just going to see the wall on a bus. Hiking along the unrestored section toward Mutianyu gave us time to marvel at the vastness of the wall and the surrounding mountains.

Must Do's:
- Take the toboggan down.
- Eat at the local chain dumpling restaurant at the bottom of the wall in Mutianyu.
- Go in mid-October (before the leaves drop off) to miss the big crowds.

As a family of five (kids 18,16 and 9) we hiked from Jiankou to Mutianyu. We took a private tour with Roy as our guide. It’s a steep hike through the forest up to the great wall, quite an excersise. Make sure you bring water and snacks ( the included lunch is actually around 3.30PM) The views are awesome and there were hardly any other people at the Jiankou part of the wall. Maybe because it was slightly raining and misty, which actually made the experience even better. Would defenitely recommend Roy as a guide. Pick up from the hotel was accurate. He speaks perfectly well English and shared his great knowledge with us. Could not have done this without him.

Wow - what an incredible experience. Justin our guide was just wonderful. It was very knowledgeable from the outset and was great with communication. He took us to a very isolated area where we were able to hike through the forest to the unrestored parts of the Great Wall. It was magical. Definitely would have not been able to explore the areas we did without his guidance. Would 100% recommend this tour and Justin. Thanks again, I look forward to seeing you again some day! Cheers, Michael

We were met promptly by our guide, Miko, who was engaging, funny, educational with fantastic English skills. He went at our pace, clearly knew the hiking trail and the interesting history of the Great Wall of China. Miko showed us a fantastic day and we both had an experience that we will never forget!
