About the operator
Don’t take it from us – here’s what people have to say about this operator:
- arcuda0 contributionsBeijing forbidden CityWe had a transit stop in Beijing for 20 hrs on our way back to Melbourne AUS. For the 20 hrs, we booked a tour to take us around to the forbidden City. We had as our tour guide Jason with his driver. Jason is very professional and experienced guide explaining all the history of the Forbidden City. Jason was very kind and was very good with our kids too. I highly recommend Jason for guided tours in Beijing.Written July 24, 2024
- lolita7320130 contributionsFirst trip to BeijingWow, where do I begin! This was our first visit to China, we booked this trip from the UK in advance. Our guide Mel, met us at our hotel and on the first day took us to the Temple of Heaven, Tianemen Square and the Forbidden City. All our admission tickets were booked by Trippest prior to arrival which meant we didn't have to queue at all. Mel was super informative and gave us lots of information whilst we were travelling to the sights. Day 2 was Summer Palace and the Great Wall, a truly unforgettable experience. Mel took great care of us throughout the day, again giving us lots of useful information whilst travelling. He took some great photos of us and ensured we were comfortable throughout the trip. Thank you Mel - you were brilliantWritten May 3, 2024
- danielatS9881RT0 contributionsThe best way to experience the Great WallWe had such a great experience seeing the Great Wall on this tour. It is so worth the extra drive to go to this part of the Wall if you want no crowds and unobstructed, spectacular views! Lisa and the driver picked us up at our hotel and we had a comfortable drive out to this section. Lisa was very knowledgeable about the history of the Great Wall and led us on a great hike across the watch towers. The views were amazing! There is a bit of climbing if you want to go to the highest watch tower but you can choose easier route as well. We saw only 10-15 people on entire hike plus you get to see unrestored sections which was very interesting. After our hike, Lisa took us to a local restaurant where we had our best meal so far. The restaurant owner was very kind and let me into the kitchen so I could watch. Best homemade tofu we’ve ever eaten! On the way home, we saw a photo from the more popular section of the wall from that day and it was a sea of people! Do yourself a favor and book this tour!! We are very grateful to Lisa and our driver for this amazing experience. On the way home, as an extra bonus, we even did a short tour of the hutong district.Written April 29, 2024
- johngle0 contributionsChina Highlights Beijing Tours - excellent service, private but VERY pricy!Raymond and Selinda were our guides in Bejing from China Highlights and they were excellent and passionate and knowledgeable about Beijing - we would certainly ask for them again if using China Highlights. Very personalized service and private car. It's all top-notch but beware - it comes at a premium. We paid on average $500.00 per day for 2 adults and 1 child which included no train transfer and only one airport transfer.Written April 21, 2024
- weekendpant0 contributionsDumpling makingWe had a fun time making dumplings at a local lady's home in the Hutongs. Our guide Colin was first class, friendly and knowledgeable and very chatty. The lady who we did the class with was brilliant and managed to get us to make some decent dumplings despite the language barrier! The only reason I didn't give 5 stars was that I was expecting to make dumplings from scratch, making the dough and fillings and cooking them, rather than just assembling pre made ingredients, but it was still a lot of fun.Written April 13, 2024
- IceMDD0 contributionsIntimate Experience As a Small GroupLily was an awesome guide, explaining the history and background of the places we visited, and answering our endless questions about everything we saw. She was patient while waiting for us, and the ride to and from the various sights was comfortable and luxurious. No one else was on the tour so it was just me and my 2 friends. It felt just like a private tour just for us.Written April 2, 2024

- yanneel0 contributionsHighly recommended tourResearched a few companies and I had decided to go with Trippest. Niko was prompt in his email replied. Hence, I booked a private tour (1 to 1) for 2 days at Zhangjiajie with an English tour guide. Lily command of english was quite good and she is able to explain to me the history and etc throughout the tour. She also helped me to take lots of beautiful photos and video! After the tour, we even become friends and have a meal together. Overall, I enjoy myself during the tour.Written February 29, 2024
- 761zyt0 contributionsNot worth the price! ☹️The experience was drastically different than promised in the description, which did not justify the price of the class. Instead of going from the very start (picking ingredients and preparing the dumpling filling), the dumpling dough and filling were prepared before we arrived. All we did was to make a few little flat circles to wrap the dumplings, fill them with the filling, and wrap them. All in all, this took maybe 20 min of the 3 hours top. Unlike the description of the class, we did not get to pick our ingredients from the local market, make the filling, nor cook the dumplings. The saving grace was that the host family and guide was welcoming and friendly. There were no clear instructions via email as after-sales care either, so we had no clear idea of where to be picked up for the class.Written November 29, 2023

Tom was an excellent tour guide. The entire day was smooth from pickup to drop off. He was knowledgeable about the Forbidden City and the history of the Great Wall. I used this day as a side trip when I was in China for work. It was the best part of the entire trip. It was me and four other people so the group was not big and there were other solo travelers. Tom also contacted me the next morning to give me a heads up that because it snowed the night before I would want to head out earlier than I had planned for the train station!

We did the Mini Group Tour: Beijing Forbidden City Tour with Great Wall Hiking at Mutianyu with Dan as guide. It was a wunderful day with a very well organized tour, which we enjoyed very much!
The trip through the forbidden city was a little bit less detailed than I expected but still very nice. You basically just follow the very touristic route straight through the core of the city and the guide will tell some instersting stories or facts about the buildings and artworks.
The stay at the Great Wall was amazing, we really took a lot of time for a hike along the wall and Dan answered all questions in detail. But keep in mind that you have to pay an extra 15-20 US$ for the caple car. They offer you to walk to the wall but I am not sure if that is really an option because than you would not have a lot of time at the wall itself.
The only thing which was really bad was the lunch. Dan told us there wouldn't be any good chinese restaurants in Mutianyu so we would have to eat at Burger King. After we ordered at Burer King the WORST meal of our whole trip in Asia, Dan left and came back with some amazing chinese food for herself from a little place just around the corner. We were sitting there asking ourself why she didn't tell us about this place beforehand but nobody explained to us why.
For future tours: PLEASE give people the choice where to eat lunch! Besides that we had a great day! Thank you again for everything Dan!

Thank you for taking your time sending review. We are glad to hear that you had a wonderful day in Beijing. Our tour guide has informed us about your lunch experience at Burger King. Considering the tight schedule, providing an additional lunch option requires balancing both time and hygiene factors. We are currently exploring clean and hygienic snack options around the Mutianyu Great Wall attraction.
We offer high-quality day trips in major China cities such as Beijing, Xi'an, Shanghai, Chengdu, Guilin, and more. We look forward to your next booking.

If you’re considering another company or excursion, don’t bother. This was by far the simplest, most convenient and educational day trip I’ve even been on. Not to mention, it was lots of fun!! I only had 24 hours to spend in Beijing and booking this tour was the smartest thing I could have ever done. From pick-up at my hotel, to drop-off at the train station, everything went smoothly. Cactus, my tour guide, had impeccable English, wealth of knowledge of Chinese history, world events and local culture. Both her and the driver knew the best spots to take pictures, avoid crowds, & routes to beat traffic from point A to point B. Not to mention, we stopped at the cutest traditional restaurant for lunch. (The food was BEYOND amazing.) Cactus also went ABOVE and beyond to ensure I made it back to Shanghai without any hiccups. If you think you can visit these locations alone, without a native - think again!

Hi bwalker86,
Thank you so much for your great feedback of Cactus and our tour! We have cooperated with Cactus for many years and we are assured of her service. So glad you had a great day with her! She is a wonderful tour guide with fluent Enlish-speaking skills and patience.
As you said, there is no better way to visit a city more than with a good guide. Hope you can come visit Beijing next time with a long holiday!

Our tour guide, Cactus, really showed us a great time. We had limited time in Beijing and managed to check off everything we wanted to see in one day. We felt we had plenty of time at each site and Cactus gave us great historical context for everywhere, as well as great places to take photos on the wall. Also loved the restaurant she took us to between the Forbidden City and the wall. Highly recommend both the tour and guide!

We had a great tour with Tom to the forbidden city & Great Wall at Mutianyu. Tom was really knowledgable and a great tour guide, he knew lots about the history and went out of his way to help us learn. Lunch was delicious, especially the di San Xian which is now my new favourite! Thankyou Tom for a wonderful day! Sarah & Chris from London.

We had an amazing day with enough time at the Great Wall to go from one end to the other end and back. Probably not everyone will come so far, but you can try.
The weather was brilliant, we had a perfect view and the wall is really a life goal everyone should have seen this.
Our guide Tom was very kind and he spoke english very well.
What also was very important to me: We didn't have to buy anything.
If you have the time just do it. This tour is worth every penny!

Very cool tour, I went in the winter of 2022, so the Great Wall was completely deserted. Covid restrictions were still in place at this time. I was the only one to book, so it ended up being a full-day, private tour 😊

My husband and I from the US took this tour with another couple from Canada in late November. Susie was our tour guide and Mr. Lee was our driver. I booked the trip in advance on TripAdvisor (which is affiliated with Viator) and was sent the confirmation info in a variety of formats 24 hours beforehand.
PROS
- Navigating Beijing is difficult, even if you know a little mandarin. It was nice to have a friendly, English speaking tour guide and a driver for the entire day and leave the navigating to them. You could also ask additional questions about the tour, where to go in Beijing and learn some basic mandarin (Chinese) words as well.
- I booked the tour about a week in advance and was sent all of the pickup details needed in various formats (TripAdvisor link to all details, WeChat, Hotel message, iMessage if you have an iPhone) so you don't have to have your cell service turned on.
- Groups are no more than 6 people which is nice to be able to really get to talk with fellow tourists and have flexibility along the way as your tour.
- No surprise stops to jade factories, markets, or reflexology places that big bus group tours have. We stopped at a few souvenir spots that were on site that you might've done when on your own anyway, and there was no pressure to buy.
- No waiting in lines. We literally just walked through security bypassing lots of people at Tiananmen Square and Forbidden City. That alone is worth the tour.
- Pickup and drop off from your hotel.
- Drop off at The Great Wall-Mutianyu just a few steps from where you take the cable car or lift up (I recommend the lift up and toboggan down. So fun!). No waiting for a shuttle to the entrance like many other tours do or you would have to if you were on your own.
- Lunch included. Susie selected several items for us to try even taking into consideration any preferences or allergies.
- Good pace for the tour. Not too rushed and not too much information. Learn what it takes to become a hero :-)
- Susie and the driver were flexible enough to let us depart at the other couple's hotel since it was close to where we wanted to explore next.
- Susie was gracious enough to take several photos of us throughout the day at great scenic spots.
CONS
- For those who care even a little about photography, you arrive at The Great Wall right at noon which is the worst time for taking photos. We were blessed with a pretty clear day with lots of sun which was nice but challenging. If I had to do it over again, I would've chosen a tour that arrived at the Great Wall early or late in the day. If you have a DSLR, consider bringing a filter to help with midday sun.
-If mobility is an issue, this tour would be difficult because there is a lot of walking and The Great Wall has a lot of uneven paths/stairs. I think that's disclosed in the tour description.
-Tiananmen Square may not be open to tourists on the day of your tour. I'm not sure how far in advance you could find that out. We were fortunate that it was on the day of our tour (a Sunday).

I took this trip because of limited time in Beijing. After paying the information says to call no more the 24hours before the tour to arrange pick-up time and place. I had put down my hotel which was on the 4th Ring Road (although technically outside, rather than inside) and accepted that I may need to pay an additional amount for pick-up. However, I didn't expect it to be CNY300 (30% more than the total cost of the tour). I could have got a taxi into the centre for CNY50 each way or walked across the road; however this was not an option due to the difficulty in contacting the tour company. The tour guide said I must pay otherwise she would get into trouble. I made a complaint to the tour operator, however did not get any response. I would also say that the tour was not a VIP experience. I would not recommend this tour company and will not be using them again.

Booked this online without too much thought and it all worked out incredibly well. The tour guide called my cell the night before to confirm our pick up time, and my only complaint was the traffic in Beijing picking up the other tour participants. The traffic in Beijing was horrible, but I have to say, regardless of that one minor glitch, the tour guides were excellent.

Hi, my hotel is located within the 3rd Ring Road. Is the bus able to pickup there?
Written November 21, 2019
The ideal place is downtown, however, within the 3rd Ring Road should be fine. There is time enough to do that but you may be asked to be ready for the pick up early, perhaps 07:30 to 08:00.

Hi,
Do you offer a full day trip with pickup from the airport and drop off at our hotel at the end?
Thanks,
Lisa
Written October 21, 2019
Hello, I have an international flight to catch at 9pm on the tour day. Your description says the tour duration is about 8 hours, meaning will the bus come back to the hotel zone around 3-4pm? If not, what has been the actual/practical return time to the city considering the traffic? I am anxious to book the trip as I can't afford to miss the flight. Also, do you provide one way transportation to the airport after the trip is over? If so, what will be the additional cost? Thank you!
Written October 14, 2019
As I recall it is possible to book a trip which returns to the airport. Your luggage is held on the mini bus as you do you tour
Better to check direct with China Highlights though as I did not avail myself of this service
Good luck and happy touring

What about children ( 9 years old) price? Is it the same as adult price?
Written July 12, 2019
Just had a play on the Tripadvisor Booking form. Price for two adults is $364.66 AUD - and for 1 adult and 1 child the price is 336.94 - so a bit of discount for a child.

Hi, what hotels are in the 4th ring they talk about as far as pick up? Do you have any recommendations for a hotel? Probably 3-5 days.
Written June 25, 2019
Hi there,
The rings refer to the location in proximity to the CBD. If you google hotels in rings in Beijing a list will pop up.
We stayed at the Fairmont Beijing which I highly recommend. During our pick up of other guests who were on tour with us they were picked up from a hotel near sunlitan toad which is a popular bar street so this also forms part of the collection point. Hope this helps.

Can you choose to do the tebogan down after the Great Wall tour?

Yes. You can opt to take the toboggan run, walk down or chair lift. I believe by default most everyone does the toboggan run down, only one in our group chose to walk back down. There is likely more cost for the chair lift, but if you plan with them they can advise.

You can call the # on your confirmation. It might be viator and provide them that info. They will also send you an email when you get closer to your trip and let them know your hotel info. I changed my hotel location last mins, I emailed and the tour group responded quickly.
