I have read an entire library of books, mostly memoirs and other nature and environmental books that have to do with East Africa and the animals in it. I finally got to go to all of the places I had read about in August of this past year.
There is only one prerequisite to visiting Africa, you must love and respect animals, and the most amazing animals on the planet are in Africa. I used Odyssey Safaris for my Safari company and I could not be happier. I emailed the Connecticut office and Mark always got back to me within the same day if not the same hour, as our trip came closer to I started emailing Lucy which is the African component of this wonderfully organized Safari company. They handled everything: plane tickets all lodging of course all game drives transfers to and from two airports and they provided us with the most wonderful safari guide ever, Erastus. With over 20 years of experience, Erastus was a font of knowledge. I ask a lot of questions and there wasn’t one he could not answer, even more amazing is he liked to be asked questions and he loved to share information about not only the amazing animals of his country but the warm, welcoming people as well.
The month of August is an excellent time to visit East Africa as it is the start of the wildebeest migration from the Masai Mars into Tanzania. I am not sure who organized this most perfect itinerary to visit Africa but from the start to the finish it builds and builds on itself until you were in the final, ultimate Safari land of Masai Mara. The trip starts in Nairobi where we stayed an extra night because we absolutely did not want to miss seeing our adopted elephant, EMOLI, at the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust. This amazing elephant orphanage has been rescuing baby elephants who have lost their mothers due to poaching, drought, and spearing. They have been doing this work since the 1970s and have successfully returned hundreds of orphans now grown into the wild that return to them over and over to bring their own babies that are wild born. Adopting an elephant through them really is a must as you get to go to a private viewing of the orphanage that the public does not see. Words cannot even begin to express the emotion and joy of seeing a little elephant that you adopted years before run right in front of you and then you get to visit him as he is drinking his bottles of milk. Odyssey safari handles the arrangements and you pay a small fee for your guide to take you there, there are other optional tours you can arrange with them as well if you are an Out of Africa fan you may want to visit Karen Blixen‘s home at the bottom of the Ngong hills. The Safari begins the next morning with the long drive to an amazing lodge right at the entrance to Ambesoli National Park. This Park is famous for all of its elephant families, you will be moved beyond words to be among these gentle giants that are completely Majestic and silent other than the munching of grass. We also had wonderful encounters with lions, cape buffalo, hippos, baboons, flamingos and this is not to mention all of the different types of antelopes and zebras and cape buffalo, wildebeests and something you will grow very fond of and surprise yourself, warthogs fondly known as Pumbas.
After two wonderful days at the Sopa lodge you will drive to another lodge that is also Sopa brand and sits right on Lake Naivasha. Every single place we stayed on this trip was wonderful, the food was incredible, the staff absolutely amazing but this was my favorite lodge of all, the reason being, the grounds All-around each individual lodge have resident zebra, waterbuck, giraffe and in the evening, the hippos wake up and make their way from the lake to the ground to graze. The staff do an excellent job of educating all visitors if the dangers of hippos. They provide escorts in the evening to take you to and from your lodge to dinner and it is quite fun to look out your window and see hippos eating right outside your door. We took an optional boat tour on Lake Naivasha where the island and animals from the movie Out of Africa can be visited
The next morning is a full day at Lake Nakuru where we saw along with many African animals, our first rhinos both white and black.
Next stop is the vast, incredible Masai Mara and wildebeest migration of National Geographic fame. We saw all of the big Five here including a leopard kill. We stayed two nights in the most comfortable tent camp you can imagine with amazing food and views of hippos sunning themselves on the Mara river. I gained an incredible respect for all of the big cats and we saw many. The Masai Mara and Serengeti plains must be experienced to fully comprehend them
At the end of the safari we opted for the two night Zanzibar stay on the Indian Ocean. We planned our on scuba diving at the gorgeous Ocean Beach resort we relaxed at before the flight home.

I have not one negative thing to say other than I hope the tide can turn for all of the poaching and wildlife conflict that occurs in the most amazing land I’ve ever seen I want to go back... soon.

From beginning to end, this trip was AMAZING. We saw the big five (sorry for the other reviewers that didn't) within days of our safari, loads of animals every single day, and had the best driver/guide, Erastus. If you have a chance to book with Odyssey, here are some pointers and words of wisdom:

1. Ask for Erastus. I don't know if that's an option, but tell him Kaitlin sent you. He was absolutely incredible. He was patient, answered the million questions we all asked him, and got just as excited to see all the animals as we did. The other car had Charles as a driver, he was pretty awesome too.
2. Read the itinerary thoroughly. There are a lot of tidbits of wisdom in there that was helpful leading up to the trip.
3. If you don't want to sweat too much and don't mind a little dust, travel in January. That's when our trip was and it stayed a sunny, 70-78F every day and cooled off at night to low 60's-high 50's.
4. Don't be worried about drinking water. Erastus had cases of it in the car for us daily. We were able to take some back with us to the room after game drives. Our car must have drank at least 30 bottles of water a day and there was still some leftover at the end of our 10 days in Kenya.
5. Every meal in Kenya was a buffet. Make the most of it. You could eat fresh fruit for every meal if you really wanted to. The bananas and watermelon are excellent. I read some reviews that people were "eh" about the food, but you're in #$%^&#$ Africa! Forget the food! It's about the animals, people, and sights and sounds. Of course you're not going to get a beautiful French breakfast every morning. But you will get to immerse yourself in the excitement of seeing lions, cheetahs, leopards, and so much more.

I would do this again in a heartbeat. I've already recommended friends and family. Thank you Odyssey for helping me check off one of my bucket list items!

With out a doubt, this was the trip of a lifetime and totally exceeded our expectations. Odyssey Safari, really knows what they are doing to provide my son and I , an amazing African experience. Our driver and tour guide was Simon. He willingly shared his knowledge of the local parks as well as Kenya. He is an excellent driver and very knowledgeable of the African Eco systems. He is well revered by the other guides we saw on our Safaris.
We came in a day early to Nairobi, which I
highly recommend. There is lots to see and do in Nairobi for the extra day. We toured Sheldrick Elephant Orphanage, Karen Blixen hone tour , (Out of Africa) and a Children’s home.

On Safari, we were overcome by the sheer beauty of the Savannah’s and seeing so many animals! Going in June we saw lots of spring babies, (ie elephants, zebras, warthogs, rhinos, cheetahs, lions and leopards) a wow factor of 10+++. The travel between the parks is fascinating and an opportunity to learn about Africa along the way.

We added Zanzibar to our trip. The Bluebay Resort was awesome and thoroughly enjoyed our tour of Stonetown and snorkeling at Mnemba Atoll! Beautiful crystal water with gorgeous colored fish in the Indian Ocean. We would recommend adding an extra day in Zanzibar.

Odyssey Safari does an excellent job selecting lodges near the different parks, whose customer service, rooms, and meals were fantastic.

Mark and Beatrice did a great job of preparing us for our adventure. The pre-trip information was very thorough and they were quick to respond to all our questions.

If you have Africa on your bucket list or want a trip of a lifetime, We highly recommend Odyssey Safari.💕

Odyssey did a great job from start to finish. We came in a day early - which we highly recommend or else you get in late and leave early the next morning. We changed our tour a little instead of going to Zanzibar we went North to Mt Kenya and Nanyuki. Everything was handled without a concern.Thank you Lucy!
Our guide, Erastus, was always happy and eager to answer questions. And a great driver - there is a lot of crazy driving over there. His knowledge of Africa and love for the parks and looking for animals was inspiring. Not to mention the man has eyes like a hawk! Everyday was a new adventure. The animals, the countryside, the culture and the food. A highlight for us was a visit to a Masai Village. The Masai are a very special, beautiful, tribal people trying to maintain their customs in a world that keeps moving forward around them. They danced and sang and taught us about their natural medicines and the way they live.
We found trying to change lenses on our camera to be tricky. By the time we got the right lens on, the animal had walked away giving you the best rear-end shot ever. Have a good zoom lens with a wide range. We used a 70-300 and found 70 was a bit too narrow for the close shots (hence the lens-changing). Sometimes the animals were very far away - they are, after all, animals and it's a huge huge place. But the good new is there are lots of them and the guides all communicate about where the animals are. If you're a photographer I suggest spending some money on a good lens.
Lunch is noon and dinner is not until 7:30 so bring snacks if you are someone who gets hungry. All in all, we met new friends, saw beautiful animals and ate new food!

Thank you Team Odyssey!

We had an excellent time adventuring through the three parks (Amboseli, Nakuru/Lake Navaisha, and Masai Mara) with our top-notch, knowledgeable, and contagiously passionate guide, Erastus. We went at the end of low season (end of May), but saw an abundance of animals including the Big Five and the beginnings of the great wildebeest migration. In Kenya, we were treated well, fed well, slept well - no complaints! And same for Zanzibar - highly recommend requesting the private villa in Matemwe. It's beautiful, the owner who lives right next door is friendly, and you will be spoiled with by far the best homemade meals you'll ever try - Mohammed the chef is fantastic. We recommend taking a day trip to Stonetown, too. Overall, Odyssey Safaris exceeded our expectations and we couldn't be happier! Highly recommended!

From start to finish absolutely amazing!! We contacted Odyssey over a year ago to start planning our dream honeymoon!! We were put in contact with Jess, from day 1 he was attentive, responsive, extremely patient (you know how brides and grooms can be), and extremely knowledgeable. He helped us with every possible option and activity we could do to make this trip once in a lifetime! From game drives, sundowners, breakfast over a hippo pool we informed us of literally everything!! He also gave us numerous options for our stay in Zanzibar to give us that honeymoon experience! He helped us with the visa process, and any vaccine information we needed! Before departure we were emailed a picture of who our tour guide would be so there was no confusion upon arrival! Once we arrived in Kenya, Simon our guide was waiting for us. He was incredible! Extremely knowledgeable, you can tell he really loves what he does and even more so loves the animals! He was extremely patient, and would wait to see what the animals would do instead of driving away like many other cars we noticed doing! All of the hotels we stayed in were charming and unique, clean and the people and staff were beyond friendly and welcoming! We almost saw the big 5 the leopards were hiding on our game drives but that’s ok well see them next time!! Once safari was over we spent the last part of our trip in Zanzibar at the Zanzi resort. We had a private villa with our own pool and private beach access, have not one complaint except that I am no longer there! Absolutely recommend odyssey to anyone who is looking for a once in a lifetime experience!!
