Be sure to request Salma as your Guide to all things Luxor! Not only is she a bonafide Egyptologist, she goes out of her way to make sure you soak in every experience of Luxor. She is incredibly honest about what you can skip and what the must-see are at the various temples and tombs. When we mentioned we wanted to see an alabaster craftsman, she took us to an out-of-way shop where we learned the steps and how to avoid fakes. She also took us to a gold/silversmith to find some real gems! Finally, learning not only ancient history but what it takes for a woman to make it in a “man’s world” in modern Egypt was fascinating! We were picked up by our tour guide Moustafa who went out of his way to not only show us the ancient sites of Aswan, but took up to local perfumeries and spice shops. He was extremely knowledgeable. In Luxor we enjoyed a hot air balloon ride and hovered over the West Bank, near the Valley of the Kings. Our last two days in Luxor we were treated to a fabulous female tour guide Salma (women are discouraged from “taking jobs away from men” in Luxor. We learned so much not only about the sacred tombs, but modern Egyptian life. You will have an amazing experience if you choose Salma as your guide! From making sure our mealtimes are perfect (thank you Maitre’d Mohammed!) to our wonderful crocodile towel sculptures, to the excellent bar staff and masseuses, we couldn’t have been happier!
