We had a lovely time with our tour guide Cherie. She was patient, gave us good account of the history of the pyramids and Sphinx. Cherie is also a very good photographer (I have lots of lovely pictures to attest to this). My highlight of the trip was the quad bike. I thoroughly enjoyed myself.

The lack of communication from the tour company made the experience stressful even before it began, as we didn’t receive any details until 10 PM the night before. That said, the tour started off on a good note with our driver—he was energetic, pointed out sights along the way, and took us on a great route for some amazing pyramid views and photos. Unfortunately, our tour guide, Halimah, was the complete opposite. She joined us midway through the journey, introduced herself briefly, and that was it. From the start, she felt distant and unengaged. We hoped she’d warm up once we arrived at the pyramids, but that never happened. She didn’t seem passionate about history, sharing only a handful of facts throughout the entire 8-hour tour. At one point, she even admitted that seeing the pyramids every day had worn off the excitement for her. Meanwhile, we saw other tour guides enthusiastically explaining details to their groups—so much so that we found ourselves eavesdropping just to learn more. There weren’t many opportunities to ask questions, and when we did, some were met with a casual “Who knows?” which was disappointing. Before lunch, we stopped at a perfume and painting store, where the staff tried to sell us items. Ironically, the brief explanation of ancient Egyptian paintings at the shop was far more informative than what we learned from Halimah at the pyramids and Sphinx. Lunch was great but before we ate, Halimah asked us to write a review so she could take a picture of it. We said we’d do one at the end of the tour but she insisted so that she could confirm we actually wrote one. We did feel pressure to write a positive one so my partner wrote a quick short one. On the way to the Grand Egyptian Museum, Halimah asked if we mentioned her name, which we didn’t. She asked me to write another one with her name which we kept delaying so that we could write an honest review. This felt very uncomfortable and made the whole experience feel like a scam, especially as we still had a big chunk of our tour left. When we reached our final spot, the Grand Egyptian Museum, Halimah mentioned she hadn’t been there in six months. This didn’t inspire much confidence. She did provide a solid explanation of the Ramesses II statue — exactly the kind of insight we would have loved throughout the tour — but after that, she mostly sat down while we walked around. She mentioned she wasn’t feeling well, and while we sympathized, we would have preferred a replacement guide in that case. Seeing the pyramids was incredible, but the overall experience was underwhelming due to the lack of passion and engagement from our guide. A knowledgeable, enthusiastic guide would have made all the difference.
