A Great Introduction to Korean Food!
David Mason, our guide for the evening was a fascinating dining host in his own right, giving insight into the Korean mindset. Couple this with a deep knowledge and love of the people, the culture and the food, we found the whole experience to be excellent. Our first stop, just a couple of hundred metres from the station, was a traditional barbecue restaurant based in an old hemp warehouse district. The food was cooked by us on a heated surface at the centre of the table, accompanied by a (weak!) vodka based drink - delicious! Second stop was a mostly seafood and vegetable tempura type of restaurant. You chose what you wanted (literally!), and they heated it and served it directly to you. Lovely, and with a rice wine to go with it, really wonderful! Third was a chicken-battered palate type of establishment. However, any similarities with Col. Saunders was minimal. This chicken was succulent and definitely high quality. Terra beer was suggested by David for this food, and excellent it was. David was a wonderful and fascinating host, and he delivered us back to the starting point, just a few minutes away from our last stop. A memorable experience. Thank you!

Excellent host (Hannah). Great knowledge and very inclusive. Would recommend to anyone coming to Seoul. If anything there was too much food.

The Most Unique Tour you can Take! - Thank You Shawn!
This was our last tour my girlfriend and I took on our trip to Korea and it was an absolutely incredible experience. Shawn gives incredible insights on burial traditions and commonalities between Korean culture and others throughout the world. The views from the cemetery are also top notch as you get to see the beautiful Korean countryside. Shawn was personable and friendly making us feel comfortable and answering any questions we had. I would easily book another tour with Shawn as he was the best tour guide we had on our trip. Thank you so much for an awesome tour Shawn!

    Do this!
Great chicken/beer experience in a neighborhood away from the crowded central Seoul area. Three locals-filled places for three different tastings of fried, grilled chicken (and I really mean shared full dishes, not just samples). Thanks to our guide, Jeff, for the food and the engaging conversation!

    Excellent and Funny Tour!
We were a small group, it almost felt like a private tour. The food places, including the K-Fried Chicken venue were excellent in food and ambience. Our tour guide, Jeff was so friendly, funny, full of information about the food, Korean dining/drinking cultures and norms, as well as great company all through the evening. He even went over the allotted time tour. I would definitely recommend this tour to anyone.

    Fun evening!
This should have been the first thing to do in Seoul, a nice evening to get to know the “food culture” in Seoul. So much to eat and no idea what or where? This tour will introduce you to delicious dishes in a very friendly and fun atmosphere… at least that was my experience, thanks a lot!!!!

    Exciting cultural exploration
My wife and I loved this hike with Shaun. In the end was a 6km hike over 5 hours that had us winded a bunch - even as experienced hikers. Don’t underestimate good shoes and water. We learned so much about the history of Korea through its religious origins that I felt I took a college course on history. Finishing the hike with a tasty meal, Maekgoli and talk about horror movies and as an added bonus.

    Great Cherry Blossom Experience
The walking tour of the cherry blossoms in Seoul along a former train line converted to a park was very enjoyable. The tour guide was very knowledgeable and provided for a great experience for me and my family. The café stop at the end of the tour was a nice touch. Lots of cherry trees and blossoms throughout the walk along with the emerging greenery, rail exhibits, and quaint as well as modern buildings along the way provided plenty of photo opportunities. The blossoms are definitely a beautiful site to see. We had a great time! i recommend the tour for all and would definitely do it again.

    Great stories and amazing scenery!
Our mountain hike with Shawn was great! Had we done the hike on our own, we would have walked right by remnants of important Korean history. The pace, the scenery, and the stories up the mountain were already amazing, but once we were coming back down and got to see the temples, it got even better. I am a big fan of folklore and storytelling, while my partner's more into the outdoors and sights, so we both got an awesome experience. I got stories, and she got her photos. Definitely one of the highlights of our trip. I'm not a hiker and I got through it okay, just bring comfortable shoes that won't slide on rock (that is sometimes wet!), and layers so you can add or take away as you start warming up. I brought along a short-sleeve exercise t-shirt, hiking/travel pants, and trail shoes. I had my rain jacket tied around my waist the whole time, but a small daypack would've been more comfortable for me. Shawn did a great job at keeping the pace and heart rate up, with breaks at just the right times. Thank you!

Joe, owner was amazing. So knowledgeable and fun. He picked the most perfect spots for us to enjoy authentic South Korean cuisine. Probably one of our most favorite food tours ever.

    Great Chimaek experience!
Ron gave an excellent tour that included 3 old school, mom and pop chicken and beer places near Mangwon station. During the tour, he took me through the Mangwon market, which I'll definitely revisit at some point. All 3 stops included a variety of tasty chicken and beer combinations with some fun side dishes to compliment the flavors and offset a little bit of the spice. They all had the feel of older, dimly lit pubs, which enhanced the experience. Ron was interesting to engage with as he spoke about some interesting aspects of the culture in Seoul. Though the tour features Cass and Red Rock beer, which is best with the chicken dishes, he also knows craft beer pretty well, so it was good to pick his brain on that with respect to Seoul. I'd highly recommend taking this tour if you enjoy wings, beer and great conversation about Seoul.

A home run on our first night in Seoul.
The three stops in very different settings made this an interesting way to spend the evening. The food and drinks were great at each location. What really set the tour apart was our host Ron. He was a rock star. We got lost on the way to the meeting location and he patiently helped us on the way with maps and phone calls. Once we were with the group he made sure we fit in even though we were late. He also gave us interesting perspectives on the food and culture. He even checked to make sure we got back to our hotel safely. We could not have asked for a better evening on our first night in Seoul.

You get the best story telling experience on this dark stories tour. Shawn is expressive and very interesting, he tells stories of old and new Korean folklore/mythology. A final bonus is strolling through Seoul at night is extremely pleasant in August.

What can I say, except I thoroughly enjoy this walking tour and it was great to finally meet Shawn. I have been following Shawn and Joe's Dark Side of Seoul's podcast for years and when my daughter bought me a trip to Korea, the first thing I booked here was the ghost and folklore tour. I can now fully visualise the places I've heard a great deal about from their podcasts. Shawn's story telling is very passionate and engaging. I loved how he includes his audience. There were plenty of creepy folklore tales to listen to on the walk around. Walking around at night, especially a foggy night, really sets the creepy vibe. I highly recommend this tour if you are visiting Korea and not to forget Shawn's Korean folklore comics.

It's fantastic to hear that you had such a great time on The Dark Side of Seoul Ghost Walk and finally got to meet Shawn in person! Your long-time following of the Dark Side of Seoul's podcast and then experiencing the tour in real life must have been quite the adventure. Shawn's passion for storytelling really shines through, and it sounds like the atmosphere of the night added the perfect touch of spookiness. Thanks for recommending the tour and the comics – it's always special when someone appreciates the full spectrum of what we offer. Hope to see you again on your next visit to Korea! 🌃👻📚

After hearing so many good things about the Dark Side of Seoul Tours I decided to finally get up to Seoul and take one with Shawn. The tour was wonderful. Jam packed with lots of really interesting information and of course tons of creepy stories along the way. Shawn is very knowledgeable and is a great storyteller so it made for an extra fun experience. Luckily no ghosts on our tour (at least that I could see). I would highly recommend the tour to anyone either visiting Korea or living in Korea who want to learn more about Korean history and of course folklore. Also the podcast is really great so after hearing so many different ones it was nice to take a walk in some of the places mentioned.

This tour hit the spot in making the most of a very brief stay in Seoul. Shawn did a great job of storytelling, explaining Korean folklore and reconciling the past with the present will all that is Korean. Tour was very well paced, he kept us on our toes, particularly on the front side of tour where he set the tone very clearly for what was to come (iLe. keeping the sensory on overload for potential sightings and experiences. For a grown man like me, I made sure i was NOT on the back end of that walking tour. , it was a lunar eclipse night afterall :) There were a couple of moments like the very first stop where I was on pins and needles waiting to be spooked. Very notable experience- Shawn was well versed, well engaged host for the night. If i did not have to catch a flight in the AM, i would have joined the extended portion of the tour. Im going to check my bags to ensure I dont leave with anything extra for sure! Thanks for fun time Shawn

I've been wanting to do this tour for some time now and I finally got the chance this week. The Dark Side of Seoul was great and Shawn is an excellent storyteller! The tour was impressionable for someone like me, who has been living in Korea for years as I got to know things I never knew before but it was also a great experience for my aunt, who as a traveller, was exploring Seoul for the first time! The tips on how to avoid some ghosts also came in handy. I would definitely recommend the tour to everyone who wants to get a taste of Korean folklore and see traditional, historic sights at night!

Shawn was a lovely tour guide, really enjoyed learning about Korean folk legends and mythology while travelling around Seoul. It is definitely a fun tour and interesting, and I am more intrigued about Korean history as well. I would say the tour is quite expensive and maybe could improve by making it more affordable. A lot of the customers were in pairs so maybe making a 2 for 1 deal would be helpful. Other than that, really had a good time and Shawn is helpful in providing advice on where to visit and what to do in Seoul and outside Seoul.

Shawn was a great host sharing a variety of stories, focusing on his extensive knowledge of both urban myths and historic folklore. I went on the extended tour and it's really worth it but you can book the first leg and pay extra in cash on the day. There are several breaks if you want to buy a snack or go to the bathroom. It took 2.5hrs in total but it felt like half that time. After the tour I received an email with a repeat of some highlights and further information. Very well done.

It's fantastic to hear that you had such a fulfilling experience with Shawn's extended tour. He really is a wealth of knowledge when it comes to urban myths and folklore. Time does fly when you're immersed in captivating stories, doesn't it? The fact that you received a follow-up email with highlights and additional information just goes to show the level of thought and care we put into our tours. Shawn is an excellent guide. He is very engaging and kept us intrigued by all the dark takes about Seoul. Her has excellent knowledge of the history and folk lores of Korea. We were very captivated by his stories and he brought us through the dark alleys and abandoned palace grounds, right in the heart of Seoul. We would never have visited all the places if not for Shawn. Highly recommend this tour if you want to know more about the imjeong, the process where the dying takes his last breath in the presence of his loved ones and how the Dog-man still roams the streets of Dongdaemun!

Thank you for your fantastic review and for labeling The Dark Side of Seoul as the "best ghost tour ever!" I'm thrilled to hear that Shawn's engagement, deep knowledge of history, and folklore brought the darker side of Seoul to life for you. His ability to captivate with stories while guiding you through lesser-known and historically rich areas of the city is something we take pride in.

On a response to a low review, management referred to the tour as "a unique blend of history and titillation". There is no better way to describe it other than to add memorable and entertaining.

At one point I did ask my guide "do you have any other d!ck stories to tell us?" It was meant with 100% interest to hear more stories throughout history of men trying to solve problems with the wrong head...

My guide, Joe, was not only incredibly knowledgeable about the history of Seoul but also a fantastic storyteller. I had goosebumps during multiple stories and the 2.5 hours of walking flew by.

This tour is pg-13 for a reason, but it was also my favorite part of my trip to Seoul. I was lucky to be on a smaller tour (7 for the regular, 4 for the extended) which made asking questions and moving through the city very enjoyable. As a solo traveler, I was nervous I'd feel like a lost puppy trailing after the group, but Joe did a great job of filling walking time with other stories and keeping the group engaged.

When I return to Seoul, I'll definitely be taking more tours by this company, probably even another evening ghost walk. I'll also be recommending this tour to any friends who go to Seoul.

Oh my! I'm thrilled to hear that the tour struck a chord with you and that you felt engaged throughout, even as a solo traveler. Joe's knack for storytelling comes from years of delving deep into Seoul's complex history. The size of the group does make a difference, doesn't it? It adds a layer of intimacy and ease that larger groups can't offer. 🚶‍♀️👻 Your willingness to return and recommend us is the highest compliment we could receive. Can't wait to share more tales and spine-chilling moments with you on your next trip! 🌒👻
