Tbilisi is the capital and the largest city of Georgia, lying on the banks of the Kura River with a population of approximately 1.5 million people. Founded in the 5th century AD by king Vakhtang I Gorgasali, since served as the capital of various Georgian kingdoms and republics. Tbilisi was the seat of the Imperial Viceroy, governing both Southern and Northern Caucasus. Throughout history Tbilisi was a point of contention between various global powers. The city's location to this day ensures its position as an important transit route for various energy and trade projects. Tbilisi's diverse history is reflected in its architecture, which is a mix of medieval, neoclassical, Beaux Arts, Art Nouveau, Stalinist and Modern structures. Historically, Tbilisi has been home to people of multiple cultural, ethnic, and religious backgrounds. Archaeological studies of the region indicate human settlement in the area early as the 4th millennium BC.   Kazbegi is a small town in the north of Georgia, 18km south of the border with Russia. The town is popular for the trekking opportunities in the visually spectacular surrounding mountains, its views of the mighty Mount Kazbek, and for the beautiful view from the town of the Holy Trinity Church outlined against Mount Kazbek itself. At 5,047 meters above sea level, Kazbegi Mountain (or Mkinvartsveri) is the third highest mountain in Georgia, and is surrounded by myths and religious tradition. Covered with 135 square kilometers of glacier, Kazbegi is a great place for ice climbing and mountaineering.
