We had a wonderful day trip traveling to the Humid Chaco with Rebeca, a local environmental scientist. She was prompt, pleasant, knowledgeable, and kept us (seniors) comfortable and safe. The drive from Asuncion was about 90 minutes to a wetlands area on a private ranch where she was able to point out and identify 70 species of birds. Rebeca shared information about the birds and plants, about local culture and life in Paraguay, and she was easy to converse with. Overall, a very pleasant, informative, and enjoyable day. Well worth the excursion!

Our guide, Maria, was very knowledgeable and informative. We saw over 75 varieties of birds! The trail was very easy and pleasant, but be certain to bring bug spray! The mosquitoes were pretty bad. Overall it was a very enjoyable tour.

We’re a couple from Finland. Our joyrney to South America ended on Paraguay in October 2018, where Wildlife Paraguay arranged our last six days plus 24 hour bus trip from Asuncion to Sao Paulo. First days we were around of Acuncion, mostly in Atlantic Forest zone. Altough heavy rain made some change for our well planned program, we got some comprehension about forests, nature, cattle farming and especially birds, in which purpose we had a very good bird quide Rebeca.

Second phase of our week was in Chaco, where we were accommodated to Iparoma ranch near of Philadelphia. There we got proper services from kind host of the ranch, his crew and our friendly guide Nathali, doing trips to different types of nature. In that time it wasnt plenty of bird species, but interesting lagoons and forests, seeing once an armadillo. We also visited barber at hair cutting and made some shopping. We enjoyed special good local style food, what we respect that much!

Because of that full package, what we agreed with Wildlife Paraguay, we didnt need more than about 10 USD per day per person. Between Asuncion and Philadelphia we used bus transportation. It takes time, but gives in the same some good situation meet local life style and watch on landscapes. We are special satisfied on Albertos services, he took completely all our needs to account, so we can warmly recommend Wildlife Paraguay.

A phenomenal day traveling the Chaco with Dr. Alberto Esquivel. He is a delightful man and truly an expert in his field of study. His knowledge of the wildlife in Paraguay is amazing. My birding tour was a gift from my wife. I was so fortunate to have Alberto as my guide. It was a one on one magical day. He picked me up at our hotel early in the morning. He is so easy to talk to and so very knowledgeable of the country and it's wildlife. Midway in the morning he stopped his vehicle in the shade of some trees and served a great breakfast. He provided a folding table and a couple of chairs for us to enjoy a really good breakfast. It was a wonderful day thanks to Alberto. I learned so very much about the area and the wildlife. I have some fantastic bird photos from that day. Even if you are not a "birder" this is a tour anyone can enjoy. Thank you Alberto!

I truly cannot recommend Wildlife Paraguay enough.
My boyfriend and I went on a 12-day tour with Wildlife Paraguay through the Chaco and Pantanal in July 2021. We were so happy with the quality of our tour, the brilliance of our guides, the level of service provided by Alberto to tailor the tour to what we were interested in, and the above-and-beyond help to monitor COVID travel protocols before, during and after our trip. The stops on our tour were Laguna Capitan, Chaco Lodge, Bahia Negra, Tres Gigantes, Chavoreca, Defensores del Chaco, Teniente Enciso and Filadelfia, each of which provided unique ecological characteristics and many animal sightings. Wildlife Paraguay also provided a fantastic bike tour of Asuncion, which was a great way to start our visit to Paraguay (more info on this at the end of the review).

The staff of Wildlife Paraguay are scientists who have years of experience researching the ecology and wildlife of Paraguay and therefore have expansive knowledge of the species, ecosystems and ongoing studies in the regions where they provide tours. It was fantastic to have a guide (Nico) who was able to provide a breadth of information about the places we were traveling and the animals around us. While we were interested seeing the large mammals associated with northern Paraguay, we were also very interested in the birds. Luckily for us, Nico could identify nearly every bird species by sight/ call and showed us how to locate and interpret animal tracks. While we didn’t see a jaguar, we did spot jaguar tracks and saw many other animals, such as ocelots, giant river otters, rheas, capybara, caiman, foxes, howler monkeys and koati.

Each of the locations we stayed in had distinct characteristics and we felt that every new stop was unique and interesting. To maximize our opportunities to see wildlife, we went on three walks nearly every day – one at sunrise, one in the afternoon and one at night. Each of these was a great adventure and we saw unique birds and mammals in each location.

In the Pantanal, there were three trails through the forest (designed by one of the Wildlife Paraguay guides!) and lookout towers, which provided many opportunities to see the diverse wildlife of the Pantanal. We also were able to go kayaking in the river to get another perspective on this amazing ecosystem. When it was hot, we hooked up our hammocks and took a nap under the palms.

We did a mixture of camping and staying in lodges/ hotels on our trip, which we thought was a good balance. Wildlife Paraguay provided a high-quality tent, air mattress and blankets for the camping nights and there were plenty of supplies for cooking by campfire. The food was very good, and they will tailor the meals to your preferences.

The COVID travel restrictions changed frequently before and during our trip to Paraguay, and Alberto was incredibly helpful in monitoring and fulfilling the requirements. Even after our tour was over, he kept us informed on everything we needed to know to travel to Brazil and back to Paraguay and helped us fill out the required forms. We were amazed by how helpful and kind he was throughout the trip.

To be honest, our tour with Wildlife Paraguay almost inspired me to change careers and become a biologist. Nico is such a passionate scientist who inspired us to carefully study the environment around us throughout the tour and ask questions about why things are the way they are. Alberto and Rebeca are equally brilliant. They are the ideal group to provide tours of Paraguay. Above all else, they are really great people who will remain friends long after our tour!
One last thing - Alberto created a biking tour of Asuncion, led by Nico (our guide), which was a great way to travel through the city to explore different landmarks and neighborhoods. Nico provided a fantastic overview of the history, politics, culture, and ecology of the city and took us to a local market to get our first taste of Paraguayan food. I highly recommend this tour for anyone seeking to get a better understanding of Asuncion, greater history of Paraguay, and a good workout!

I was so impressed by our experience with Wildlife Paraguay and would recommend it 10000x over because of the level of organization, quality of the tour locations and accommodations, amount of wildlife and overall excellence of the guides.

So many thanks, Kathryn and Kyle!!! We have really enjoyed to have a tour with you!! After almost 2 years without almost any tours, your review, and the opportunity that you gave us to share with you a 12 days tour, and the frienship that you gave us, really inspire us to continue working to improve tourism in our country. Thanks again, thanks too much!!

We were lucky to get a whirlwind 3-day humid- and dry-Chaco environments tour with Nico and Rebecca at the end of January, 2020. What an extraordinary weekend! I came away with new respect for these amazing and rapidly disappearing ecosystems. It is important to understand that this is an area with extremely limited tourist facilities — limited camping, hotels, grocery stores, paved roads, public land and signage. But it has ample wildlife, heat, mosquitoes, dust and potholes. Our amazing guides made it easy to overlook the challenges and focus on the amazing wildlife. Rebecca and Nicole are passionate about this area and the animals in it, and seem to know the Latin, English and Spanish names for every one of them, as well as their behaviors. Unforgettable!
On the practical side of things, Nico and Rebecca were very thoughtful about bio-breaks. They were attune to the desires of each of us. Their English was excellent, and, better yet, they were patient with my efforts at Spanish.

Superb birding experience! We saw 87 varieties and a Cayman! Dr.Esquival was superb in finding the birds. We were lucky that it was Spring so there were few leaves in the forest. We spotted birds in the savannah driving up to the forest, it was exciting! We even received a log of all the birds we saw and heard during the tour. As we stated early 5:45 am we stopped for breakfast as we entered the forest. Fruit salad, juices and bread, delicious sitting in camp style chairs and hearing bird calls. We continued through the morning seeing and experiencing birds and ended up at a working cattle ranch where we had a packed lunch of the most delicious empanadas of different kinds. I am a vegetarian and Dr. Esquival took note of that and I was delighted! We wandered around the ranch and chased red crested cardinals! Waved to the horses and foals and enjoyed the serenity. It was a superb experience. I wish we had more days. I am now looking at the bird list and reminiscing about our delightful trip, great food, superb experience, comfortable ride on a four wheeler! Hope I can go back there some day again! Thank you! Thank you!

This trip was intense and jam-packed with interesting locations. Led by Alberto who is an expert ornithologist, a friendly and considerate tour leader and who speaks perfect English, we were taken to places that would be very hard to find by yourself. We saw a huge variety of birds and other nature (caimans, giant ant-eater, peccaries...) in often very special scenery. Paraguay offers lots of surprises and a trip like this will be greatly enjoyed by the more adventurous traveller. Good value for money.
