- U4880FAjoyceh0 contributionsExcellent Birding AdventureThis experience was wonderful! Our tour was designed specifically for us- Sumapaz, Boyaca , Santa Maria. Leon Sanchez was an excellent guide, he is passionate, knowledgeable, personable and patient as were the local guides he used who had expertise in particular regions/ecosystems. We saw many different species including rare and/or endemic birds. Leon did speak English, sometimes it was difficult to understand him when he spoke fast. The local guides were less fluent but we were still able to communicate. We visited farms where the families were dedicated to preserving the ecosystem and whose livelihoods were enhanced by the ecotourism which was inspiring. We ate local foods which were fresh, well-prepared and generously portioned. Most of the accommodations were very nice, the hotel in Santa Maria was very basic.Written March 1, 2025
- WorldBirderMichigan_0 contributionsBest Birding Tour Company in ColombiaThis is the best birding tour company in Colombia, recommended by several of my serious birding colleagues. We did the Santa Marta/Northern Colombia tour and it was outstanding. I’m conservative in my counting species but had 337 in 11 days including loads of endemics. Oswaldo is an excellent guide with a good command of English and knows where to go. His drivers are the best. They negotiated some of the worst roads I’ve seen in my life as well as getting through urban traffic. The company also booked our stays in excellent lodging with good food and close access to the best birding areas. Very highly recommended!Written February 28, 2025
- sasweene0 contributionsAmazing trip to the Western AndesDaira and the team did a great job organizing my trip to the Western Andes. My guide Víctor was top notch and helped me see hundreds of bird species including many Colombian endemics. Everything was pitch perfect - thank you Victor, Daira, and the rest of the Bogota Birding team for making this such a special trip!Written January 25, 2025
- dougwE8924MY0 contributionsSuccessful birding tripCustom birding tour in Western and North-Central Andes. Overall very good. Saw lot of target species, but also missed a fair number and some were not even available where we birded. Food fine, lodging good in context. Pre-trip communication was ok. Drivers were very safe and good. Only real suggestion would be to work closer with clients on target species pre-trip so clients have realistic understanding of which species are likely viewable vs out of range. Oswaldo is a nice guy and good bird guide.Written January 16, 2025
- Storyteller6009360 contributionsChingaza National Nature Park will literally take your breath away.We had a great trip to the Chingaza National Nature Park, high above Bogota, including an overnight in a cabin in the park. Despite lack of power, and thus of heat or light, the night in the cute A-frame was comfortable and nice. They're working on the power - check status before you go. On the road to and from, we reached 3700 meters (12,150') with literally breathtaking views. We spent a lot of time in the distinctive paramo ecosystem, as well as sub-paramo and earlier and after cloud forest and tropical moist forest. In accordance with our preference, Oswaldo emphasized quality over quantity of observations. He seemed to know where to find every kind of bird, including on the way in at lower elevation. He was very active and effective in helping us enjoy the birds with a spotting scope, as needed. On the way out, we also visited the Observatorio de Colibries, a distinctly tasteful hummingbird feeding station site. Altogether we saw 35 species of birds in 2 days, as well as a couple of mammals (deer, squirrel). Unfortunately, despite Oswaldo and his colleagues (driver, local guide) extensive efforts, and quite a bit of fresh sign, we did not get to see the Andean (Spectacled) Bear. Some birders frown on the use of recordings to bring birds out of the bushes. We're not purists, and enjoyed that Oswaldo was particularly effective in that manner. I expect he would accommodate the preference of anyone that preferred otherwise. He was a great guy, very well informed and congenial. Altogether, a wonderful trip.Written December 23, 2024
- KWh-3330 contributionsGreat day's birdingI had an excellent day birding in the Bogota area with Oswaldo Cortes, who certainly knows his birds. We visited Florida Wetland, Laguna el Tabacal and Jardin Encantado and saw great birds at each site.Written November 15, 2024
- margaritak8140 contributionsBirding in a cloud forest in ColombiaI went on the Chicaque Nature Reserve (Cloud forest) day tour. It was a great day trip, highly recommended for anyone who loves birds! This reserve has native forest that has never been logged. My guide Leon was extremely passionate and knowledgeable about birds (and Colombia in general), knowing all their calls, identifying them immediately by name (scientific name too), and also letting me know if they were endemic or not. When he heard a bird, he played a recording of the call of that bird (he has a large collection of bird calls on his iphone) and lured most birds out into the open where we could spot them. Leon has a digital SRL camera and was able to take some great photos of birds we saw (if they were still and close enough), then sent them to me later through WhatsApp. He also had a telephoto lens on a tripod, to which I connected my iphone and was able to get some great videos of hummingbirds feeding. AND he carried all this gear quite easily in a lovely walk down through the cloud forest. They drive you back up. Breakfast and lunch provided were very good. All in all, we spotted 50 birds (Leon said it was a good day), which was a lot more than I expected! And the most I have ever seen in one day. So the price of the tour was well worth it. Some of the highlights of the trip was seeing the Black Inca (Coaligena prunella), twice, and the Golden-bellied Starfrontlet (Coeligena bonapartei) only found in this small pocket of Colombia! I found that Oswald and Daira were very helpful, easy to communicate with, responding to my emails and WhatsApp messages very quickly so I could decide what to do. I was also very happy to hear that they are very interested in the conservation of the beautiful fauna and flora of Colombia, so a company well worth supporting.Written October 2, 2024
- satchmo08020 contributionsGreat day trip of birding near Bogota!Bogota Birding & Colombia Wildlife Tours. Great full day of birding with Oswaldo and Hermes. Both were very professional. They picked me up on time at 5:00 AM at my hotel in Bogota and then we drove to our destination. Oswald is a great guide and Hermes the driver (Hermes was into birding too and helped spotting birds). Very highly recommended!Written September 6, 2024
- 384tomasn0 contributionsGreat birding trips around Bogota.I went on two tours with Oswaldo around Bogota. We had a driver (critical for dealing with Bogota's crazy traffic) and both days included breakfast and lunch. On the first day we went to La Vega and on the second to Chingaza. Both yielded a bunch of great birds. Oswaldo was patient, going at a pace that was comfortable for me. Highly recommended.Written June 24, 2024
- C9835UMscottb0 contributionsMost excellent birding experience!!Bogota Birding was great in every way!! They were very prompt in answering my initial email, and work with me before my visit to make sure I saw the most bird species possible. Juan Carlos was my guide for the 2 full day trips. He picked me up at my Air BnB both mornings, he was very easy to hang out with, and the right balance of serious about seeing all the birds and still focused on just having fun in Colombia!! We ate great food both days and drank wonderful coffee, laughed a lot and saw some real jewels! I really appreciated their attention as I was planning my trip, and their care andWritten April 1, 2024
- davidbL1633QJ0 contributionsBirding in a park near the city of BogotaWe arranged to visit Parque la Florida on the outskirts of the City of Bogota for a half day of birding. The leader assigned by Bogota Birding & Colombia Wildlife Tours was Hernan Garcia, who was not only personable and an excellent driver (it's quite a long drive in heavy traffic from hotels near the airport to the park NW of the city), but a very good birding guide. We saw two rare species with Hernan -- Bogota Rail and Spot-flanked Gallinule -- and thoroughly enjoyed our day.Written March 13, 2024
- Martini330 contributionsAn adventure of a lifetime!I had the best time on my 5 night/6 day excursion into the countryside around Bogota with Bogota Birding. Daira organized everything and the trip went flawlessly. My guide's (Juan Carlos and Hermes) picked me up from my Bogota Hotel very early in the morning. From that moment everything was taken care of. We visited many wonderful places and saw many wonderful things. Our local guides along the way were extremely knowledgeable and simply terrific at their jobs. The birding was spectacular. The adventure was incredible and a trip I will remember for the rest of my days. I found the people of Colombia to be exceptionally friendly and accommodating. Be sure to pack your sense of adventure and book with confidence. I really enjoyed this trip and would go again without hesitation.Written March 12, 2024

Sumapaz is the largest moor in the world and an almost certain place to see the endemic Apolinar's Wren and Green-bearded Helmetcrest species. It was an incredible experience so close to Bogotá. Very good organization of the tour and a very professional guide (Camilo). I recommend it 100%.

I was fortunate enough to be able to visit this unique and fascinating ecosystem with Oswaldo Cortez, who expertly located over a dozen birds I’d never seen before, including the endemic Apolinar’s Wren and Silvery-throated Spinetail. Other lifers for me included the Pale-naped Brush Finch, Many-striped Canastero, Andean Teal, Black-chested Buzzard Eagle, Tawny Antpitta, and the gorgeous Scarlet-bellied Mountain Tanager. Come prepared for the altitude (>10,000’)and highly variable cool, rainy, foggy weather most of the year. The paramo is a wet bog-like area above the tree line. It reminded me of the slopes of Haleakala in Hawaii, and many of the plants are similar ecologically. Most of the plants here are endemics, and many are covered with colorful flowers which attract hummingbirds and other nectar feeders like Flowerpiercers. Oswaldo was a tremendous host, knowledgeable, happy to answer all my questions, and fluent in English. The terrain isn’t appropriate for hiking (birding is done from the road) and is probably not spectacular enough to interest the average tourist. I would highly recommend this trip for anyone with an interest in birds, botany or ecology.

This was our second day of birding with our excellent guide, Camilo Orjuela from Bogota Birding. After a long day of birding in Chicaque previous day, we overslept until Camilo arrived to pick us up from the hotel at 5AM. We scrambled and got on our way to Sumapaz National Park, which is the world's largest Paramo. Quick breakfast on the way and we were birding by 8AM. It was chilly and breezy here at this high altitude paramo, so come prepared with layers of clothing. It was a beautiful day with great visibility and the the majestic forest of Espeletia aka Frailejones are unique to this area.
The area had the loud singing birds - Apolinar's Wren (which is endemic to this area) and Tawny Antpitta singing all the time. The difficulty was to see them and then photographing them. With Camilo's skills in calling and spotting them, we were able to photograph them. We observed 26 species there for this sparse area near Laguna Chisaca. Camilo tried to call the Bogota Rail, but it wasn't there. We also saw the female Green-bearded Helmetcrest hummingbird feeding (another endemic species here).
We saw and photographed a lot of birds, but even if we didn't, the beauty of this unique landscape would have been worth it. This can be a great place for landscape photographers.
After spending about five hours there, we stopped at a small private reserve closer to Bogota for lunch at Reserva Chiguaza with brothers Daniel and Luis, who are amazing hosts and bird guides as well. After lunch, we went for birding in their property and saw a few more new birds for us - Green-tailed Trainbearer hummingbird, Silvery-throated Spinetail, Gray-browed Brush Finch, etc.). And then we returned back to the hotel by 5PM. Another 12 hours of birding with Camilo and Bogota Birding. Thank you, Camilo, Oswaldo, Daira!

My colleagues and I are working on water resources and since the paramo is so important we took the opportunity to go up Sumpaz NP, near Bogotá. For my own interests, the birds were a nice bonus! OSwaldo did a great job explaining anything from Colombia's sociology, upcoming elections, ecology, the birds (he found the really special ones), and it goes on. On top of that, he was by far the safest driver we had for the week. It was cold, wet and miserable but we had a really nice time!
