Birding in Colombia with Bogota Birding
This was an amazing 10 day tour that visited the Santa Marta area, Manizales, and Guayabetal. Oswaldo Cortes is a highly skilled guide who enabled me to see almost all of the Santa Marta endemics and 10 species of Antpittas. In total approximately 43 life birds.

Excellent trip to Chingaza Parque and Observación de Colibres
Had an excellent birding trip with Leon and Alex. We went to Chingaza Nacional Parque and Observation De Colibres. Chingaza is a spectacular place with many endemic bird species. León is an extremely knowledgeable guide and we saw many of my target species. He also provided very interesting cultural information about Colombia. We stopped for breakfast and lunch at very delicious and authentic Colombian restaurants. I highly recommend using Bogota Birding and Leon for any birding trips!

    Great birding in beautiful mountains
Wife and I did a custom tour of 17 days birding and one day Bogota city tour with guides and drivers throughout. Saw 318 species including many endemics. The country is beautiful through eastern, central and western Andes. Lodges and meals were very enjoyable as were the people taking care of us.

    Six days around Bogota
In six days, with Oswaldo and León as guides and Daira handling logistics, I managed to see 240 species, all in the proximity of Bogotá. Thanks to Bogotabirding I got good views of all my targets, such as Bogota Rail, Noble Snipe, Green-bearded Helmetcrest, Bronze-tailed Thornbill, Golden-bellied and Blue-throated Starfrontlet, Longuemare's Sunangel, Coppery-bellied Puffleg, Silvery-throated Spinetail, 5 species of Antpitta all seen (Cundinamarca, Muisca, Rusty-breasted, Northern Tawny and Chestnut-crowned), Pale-bellied Tapaculo, Apolinar's Wren, Yellow-fronted Whitestart, Rufous-browed Conebill and many others. Their knowledge of the birds around Bogota is truly impressive. I particularly appreciated their help in getting some uncommon and unreliable species, for which they had several alternative spots planned. Among the various highlights, I recommend visiting Refugio del Tororoi and ask for Yersson, a great local guide! Finally, I would like to underline that Bogotabirding is active in a series of local initiatives to increase conservation efforts and foster environmental education. It was all in all a great experience, fun and fascinating, and one that I look forward to repeat! I would 100% recommend their tour for both novices and expert birders and I plan to travel with them again.

Birding with Bogota Birding on June 30, 2023
I had a great day of birding with Oswaldo on June 30, 2023. It was unfortunate that our main destination for the day, Tabacal Lagoons, was closed on short notice for an unscheduled event. But thanks to Oswaldo's knowledge and experience we made the best of it, and from the nearby area as well as three other birding locations, I managed to see 86 species including 10 lifers. Many birders would have seen many more lifers, but I have previously birded several times before in Ecuador and Venezuela. I also got many great photos that day. I shared my eBird checklist from La Florida with Oswaldo already. I would definitely consider booking a birding trip with Bogota Birding the next time I come to Colombia.

Excellent introduction to birding in Colombia, 86 species observed in one day, amazing guide!
What impressed us right off the bat was the fact that the amazing photographer-guide-owner of Bogota Birding responded to my inquiry thru WhatsApp very quickly. I had contacted few others, but their response was tardy and/or very late. Second, their website provides ALL the details and more very clearly and that takes a lot of effort. I was convinced that it was not a casual operator. Third, the co-founder Diara Ximena was very responsive as well with more details and suggestions for the tours as we had very few days in Bogota and we let them decide which places we should visit. And on top of that, they assigned an excellent guide, Camilo Orjuela. We were extremely impressed with Camilo. He was very knowledgeable about bird behavior, bird calls and best locations to expect specific birds. He was very patient and used calls to attract the birds multiple times so that I could photograph them. And on top of it, he is a very nice guy with a global travel experience and speaks excellent English. The fact that we saw 86 species in one day and in one reserve was amazing and that's a testament to his guiding skills! Camilo picked us up at 5:00AM from our hotel in Bogota and we started birding at 6:30AM in the morning on the way even before we reached the reserver. Prior to that, we had breakfast at a very nice place, which was included in the price along with the lunch at the lodge later on. We were well fed and taken care of. It was a long day and Camilo took good care of us. Thank you, Camilo! Once we reached the reserver and after Camilo obtained the tickets and also booked the return ride by 4x4, we started hiking downhill on the brick lined steps and cobbled pathway. You need to be careful here as they are slippery due to moss and wet conditions. We just followed Camilo's steps and we were just fine. In spite of the constant fog and light drizzle, we saw a very large number of birds, which we weren't expecting in these conditions. I had read reviews of the reserve and people have complained that they didn't see much because of the conditions. I can only say that, they didn't have a good guide like Camilo. Next time, don't skimp on a good birding guide. After reaching the lodge, which by the way is at a spectacularly beautiful location, we were surprised at the quality of birding from the balcony at the back of the restaurant. I interrupted my lunch multiple times to photograph birds. We saw the beautiful Puff-breasted Tanager and Southern Emerald Toucanet among many others from the balcony. Most people and kids were hiking up the hill back to the parking lot, but we took the 4x4 as we were pressed for time. We were dropped back at our hotel around 5PM. It was a solid 9 hours of birding plus the driving time. And Camilo was busy preparing the eBird list for us after that. I asked him to rest instead as we were going for another early morning birding the very next day. I highly recommend Bogota Birding and guide Camilo Orjuela. Just let them decide where you should go once you are in Bogota. It is that simple! I can't go birding with anyone else when we come back for a longer time to explore Colombia.

    Excellent guides
Oswaldo and Hernan were excellent guides and tailored our day trips in the Bogota area to suit our interests and abilities. We are long time birders and have some minor mobility issues as seniors but both men were sensitive to that with their recommendations and support. It was great getting to know them and in fact we found the Columbian people that we came in contact with to be warm and friendly. We visited two private hummingbird reserves owned by lovely Columbian people, were catered to with delicious meals and enjoyed interesting conversations about the birds. Highly recommend this birding group!

    Birding with Raul
I had a 16 hour layover in Bogota, so contacted Bogota Birding and arranged a trip to the Chicaque Cloud Forest. Raul was a fantastic guide. We birded a bit on our way to the forest, then spent the whole day walking on trails and having a great time birding. We saw over 50 species including a couple regional endemics, and Raul also had tremendous knowledge of the cloud forest ecosystem, and the plants and the birds within. Highly recommend.

A Fascinating Birding Adventure in Mitu, Colombia!
The birding trip to Mitu was wonderful! Oswaldo, as always, was a highly knowledgable, friendly and insightful guide, and, along with Indigenous guide Miguel, helped our group travel and find and view wonderful birds! In Mitu, Hotel Brasilia's Monica and Ingrid greeted and took care of us with delicious coffee and foods. This Amazon area is not to be missed!

Certainly one of the best birding tour companies in Colombia
For a birder like me, this was the trip of a lifetime. Oswaldo is an excellent birding guide who will insure that you see a long list of fabulous birds, who is also friendly and easy to converse with. Our trip was to Mitu, Colombia, in the Vaupes department or province (basically the Amazon jungle). Bogota Birding was very intelligent in getting the absolute best local indigenous guide in the region to accompany Oswaldo, so we had two highly skilled bird guides, meaning it was not possible to have a better experience. We went from one amazing bird to the next (and to the next to the next) for one whole week of pure enjoyment. Do not hesitate to use this company. It is fabulous. Also, a bonus was the nice hotel with great food, air conditioning and showers. Daira is at the Bogota Birding headquarters office and she is very communicative and quick to respond to questions and inquiries.

    An amazing experince
I whole heartedly endorse Bogota Birding! They are very communicative and let me make my own adventure. My guide, Camillo, is fantastic. He is super knowledge and seemed to know where all birds were. I'm still not sure how he does it, lol. The restaurant we went to for breakfast and lunch were clean, modern, and had authentic cuisine. Having fresh brewed coffee in the cloud forest watching sword-billed hummingbird is a memory I will cherish forever. Thank you, Bogota Birding

The trip was meticulously planned and flawlessly executed by Oswaldo. His friendly demeanor, enthusiastic attitude and impeccable expertise made the journey a pleasurable and total success. Exceptional Private bird watching tour
Hernan is a great leader for birdwatching in the rainforest and at a hummingbird sanctuary. He is well versed in flora and local history as well which gave a rich perspective of local culture and ecology.. Hernan loves to share birdwatching time with others.

Fantastic birding day at Chingaza and Observatorio de Colibries
I had just 24 hours in Bogotá and really wanted to squeeze in some birding and see some paramo specialties. Bogotá Birding really delivered! Daira was super helpful and responsive by email and arranged a fantastic day of birding in Chingaza and at the Observatorio de Colibries with Leon Sanchez who was a wonderful, knowledgeable, friendly and professional guide with an encyclopaedic knowledge not only of birds but animals, plant life and ecology in general. His pride in his country and passion for sharing its amazing biodiversity really shone and made it a delight to bird with him. I was impressed by Bogotá Birding from start to finish and wouldn't hesitate to recommend them to anyone travelling to Colombia.

    Andean Endemics Birding Trip
I had a wonderful birding trip with my guide, Leon Sanchez, and excellent driver, Sebastian. My Andean Endemics trip was January 17th to 24th, 2023 and during that time we had great birding every day and I ended up with a trip list of 183 species (including 29 hummingbirds), which was a very nice total considering we were targeting a series of range-limited endemics. Leon was an excellent guide (great, in particular, at birding by ear) and we saw almost every target bird we sought including Noble Snipe, Bogota Rail, Green-bearded Helmetcrest, Colombian Chachalaca, Cundinamarca Antpitta, Whooping Motmot, and Barred Puffbird as well as a variety of antbirds, antshrikes, tanagers, woodcreepers and members of other typical Neotropical groups. Leon went to great pains to make sure the trip went really smoothly and he was a pleasure to bird and hang out with. There was a fair bit of time spent in heavy traffic, which was unavoidable since we were largely based out of Bogota, but Sebastian handled the driving wonderfully - nothing ever ruffled him. Of the places we visited, I especially enjoyed the time we spent at Finca Los Cactos, where our hosts Marta and Alain were utterly charming , and the time spent at Chingaza, which is fabulous paramo habitat. All in all it was a great trip -- the birding was stellar and the logistics were handled seamlessly (thanks Daira!).

I was fortunate enough to be able to visit this unique and fascinating ecosystem with Oswaldo Cortez, who expertly located over a dozen birds I’d never seen before, including the endemic Apolinar’s Wren and Silvery-throated Spinetail. Other lifers for me included the Pale-naped Brush Finch, Many-striped Canastero, Andean Teal, Black-chested Buzzard Eagle, Tawny Antpitta, and the gorgeous Scarlet-bellied Mountain Tanager. Come prepared for the altitude (>10,000’)and highly variable cool, rainy, foggy weather most of the year. The paramo is a wet bog-like area above the tree line. It reminded me of the slopes of Haleakala in Hawaii, and many of the plants are similar ecologically. Most of the plants here are endemics, and many are covered with colorful flowers which attract hummingbirds and other nectar feeders like Flowerpiercers. Oswaldo was a tremendous host, knowledgeable, happy to answer all my questions, and fluent in English. The terrain isn’t appropriate for hiking (birding is done from the road) and is probably not spectacular enough to interest the average tourist. I would highly recommend this trip for anyone with an interest in birds, botany or ecology.

This was our second day of birding with our excellent guide, Camilo Orjuela from Bogota Birding. After a long day of birding in Chicaque previous day, we overslept until Camilo arrived to pick us up from the hotel at 5AM. We scrambled and got on our way to Sumapaz National Park, which is the world's largest Paramo. Quick breakfast on the way and we were birding by 8AM. It was chilly and breezy here at this high altitude paramo, so come prepared with layers of clothing. It was a beautiful day with great visibility and the the majestic forest of Espeletia aka Frailejones are unique to this area.

The area had the loud singing birds - Apolinar's Wren (which is endemic to this area) and Tawny Antpitta singing all the time. The difficulty was to see them and then photographing them. With Camilo's skills in calling and spotting them, we were able to photograph them. We observed 26 species there for this sparse area near Laguna Chisaca. Camilo tried to call the Bogota Rail, but it wasn't there. We also saw the female Green-bearded Helmetcrest hummingbird feeding (another endemic species here).

We saw and photographed a lot of birds, but even if we didn't, the beauty of this unique landscape would have been worth it. This can be a great place for landscape photographers.

After spending about five hours there, we stopped at a small private reserve closer to Bogota for lunch at Reserva Chiguaza with brothers Daniel and Luis, who are amazing hosts and bird guides as well. After lunch, we went for birding in their property and saw a few more new birds for us - Green-tailed Trainbearer hummingbird, Silvery-throated Spinetail, Gray-browed Brush Finch, etc.). And then we returned back to the hotel by 5PM. Another 12 hours of birding with Camilo and Bogota Birding. Thank you, Camilo, Oswaldo, Daira!

My colleagues and I are working on water resources and since the paramo is so important we took the opportunity to go up Sumpaz NP, near Bogotá. For my own interests, the birds were a nice bonus! OSwaldo did a great job explaining anything from Colombia's sociology, upcoming elections, ecology, the birds (he found the really special ones), and it goes on. On top of that, he was by far the safest driver we had for the week. It was cold, wet and miserable but we had a really nice time!
