What to expect
  • Meet your private driver at your hotel or another central location of your choice in Amman, and venture into northern Jordan toward Jerash. One of the world’s best-preserved classical sites, Jerash was a prosperous Greek and Roman city. Founded by Alexander the Great around 331 BC, the city—then called Gerasa—reached its peak after the Roman conquest in 63 BC, later becoming one of the 10 great Decapolis cities of the east. Arrive at the gate and choose to explore independently or hire a local guide (own expense). Then, head inside (own expense) to inspect the timeworn streets, plazas, bathhouses, and other remains. See highlights like the 2nd-century Hadrian's Arch and 15,000-seater Hippodrome arena, and admire the Oval Colonnade, Temple of Artemis, and Colonnaded Street. Then, travel to nearby Ajloun Castle, a 12th-century fortress built by the forces of Saladin to defend against Crusader incursions. The hilltop edifice is a stunning example of medieval Arab-Islamic military architecture and was built to dominate three major passages into northwest Jordan. Go inside (own expense) and look around the towers, corridors, and small museum, absorbing the historical atmosphere and scenic views. Re-join your driver and continue further north to Umm Qais, where the remnants of another Roman Decapolis city known as Gadara cover a hillside. Drink in the views from the hill to the Golan Heights, Lake Tiberius, and Jordan Valley, and opt to explore independently or take a locally guided tour (own expense). View the Greco-Roman remains, seeing highlights such as the mausoleum, basilica terrace, and theaters. Finally, reconvene with your driver and return to Amman, where your tour ends with a drop-off at any central location of your choosing.

The main highway to Umm Qais was closed so I elected not to take the backroads. The highlight of the trip is Jerash which is interesting to explore. Tour operator was great. No issues with the organization. I felt the tour locations were simply not interesting enough to warrant 5 stars. However, if your interest is visiting Jerash, this is a great option.

A constantly evolving excavation of the Roman city of Jerash. Temples, amphitheater’s , and the once shop lined city streets. The only sight cobble stone streets running North and South but has cobble streets running East and West. Highly unusual for Romans to cobblestone East and West streets.

We hired a driver and a car for ourselves. It costed us 90 JOD, much cheaper than the tours offered by tuor operators. The car was much more comfortable than a bus. We could stop wherever we wanted. First we went to Umm Qays. The ruins there are not very interesting but one can see the Golan Heights and Lake Tiberius from there. Then we went to Ajloun castle which is better preserved. The ruins at Jerash are extensive and took a longer time to see. If someone has been to Italy or Turkey and has seen the ruins of Roman empire, then they will not be able to enjoy them as much as the one who is visiting for the first time. If you are seeing the Roman ruins for the first time then it is best to have a guide. They are present at the entrance and you must negotiate the price before starting the tour. Talk to the guide in your language to assess his command over the language. Many of the so called guides can not converse properly and you end up wasting your valuable money. Our driver Motasem Mansour (+962 79 697 1174) was very friendly and kind. He drives very well and cautiously.

I opt to see Umm Qais, Ajloun, and Pella from Amman. I already had Jerash on my tour schedule so I chose to opt out of it.

Umm Qais was a unique experience that I wish I could have spent more time in. The driver informed me that the site would take 45 minutes to an hour but I ended up spending 90 minutes there. The places is largely destroyed by earthquake and it's statues long removed by bandits. The road to the Sea of Galilee which is still largely intact and I discovered that I could book a two day hiking trip down the road. The structures are unique in that basalt stones were used in most of the structures which is unique to all the other structures in Jordan that used either white marble or reddish sandstone in their construction. If I go back to Jordan I will arrange to spend more time in Umm Qais.
I visited Jerash later in the week and Umm Qais is just as impressive.

Pella. The former City State is largely in very bad shape. The site is not well protected and the locals use it as a park. It's full of garbage and graffiti on the pillars and stones. The signage in the park is rusted and the paint long peeled away.

Ajloun. The former monastery turned Arab fortress is in excellent shape and is visited by many locals. Large parts of Ajloun was under repair at the time of my visit but most of the ramparts are still accessible for visitor.

*Stay away from the Artemis Cafe in Jerash. #foodpoisoncentral

We had problems with this tour.

At Jerash, since the driver did not accompany us to where you buy the tickets, we payed the money for the entrance fee but were not given the tickets. We didn’t think that there were tickets, but when we got much further they wanted our tickets. We didn’t get to see the majority of the old city.

Our driver wouldn’t take us to Umm Qais because he said that the view was the same as Jerash.

I don’t know if all the drivers are like ours, but I would not use this company again.

Jerash is an amazing site and a must see if you are going to Jordan. It is the location of the largest Roman architecture outside Italy. Umm Qais is roughly 110 kilometres (68 mi) to the north from Amman, and it gives you a beautiful panoramic views over the Northern Jordan Valley, the Sea of Galilee, and the Golan Heights along with an extensive site of the ruins of Gadara as it was once called the "city of philosophers". Ajloun Castle was originally built in 1184 to defend against the Crusaders. These 3 amazing sites will fill your day with a lots of good memories.

We booked a full day tour through Viator on 2/23 (where I am unable to post this review), and paid for the extra option of a local guide at Jerash. We were disappointed to hear the Umm Qais was "closed" that day, according to our driver, due to flooding and proceeded on that tour. You would think that we would be offered another scenario to replace but no; all that was said was that Aljoun and Umm Qais "are basically the same".

Upon arrival to Jerash we expected to be greeted by a local guide but were told on site that we would have to pay in advance even after showing our confirmation. No one would honor the first payment and we did not want to shell out extra JOD when we already paid.

By the way, we have not been able to confirming Umm Qais was actually closed that day. We checked multiple sources during the rest of our trip and all sources point to the fact that it was open. I will be contacting Viator and Trip Advisor for a refund. We had to look around the grounds ourselves and were only taken to two locations and a touristy Dead Sea product shop, which our driver seemed to have an agreement with the owner.

Dear, Um Qais was replaced with Amman city tour due of bad weather and floods, and regarding the guide in Jerash was provided by us and we already sent a copy receipt to Viator.

I'm giving this activity a 3/5 because we were promised a day-trip to three locations, Ajloun, Jerash, and Umm Qais. We were informed by our driver on the day that Umm Qais is closed for renovations, and that he'd make it up to us by giving us a tour of some modern attractions in Amman, like the King's car show and Queen Noor's foundation. We were not interested in either, seeing as we came to Jordan purely out of interest in the history, and are quite disappointed, because we paid a premium to see three sites instead of two. We should have been informed before-hand so that we could plan another site to visit in advance, or at least reimbursed for the third. Buyer beware.

It was a great day in terms of weather and what you can see. Take your time everywhere and enjoy the many things to see. There are way too many hawkers just trying to rip you off though, so beware of that constant harassment - especially in Jerash (before you get to the actual guides is the worst but inside as well)

The tour depends on your driver guide. We had Hassan of Rasheed Tours who made sure we were safe, comfortable and given the right guidance whether to get a tour guide at Umm Qais, Ajloun and Jerash. We had a wonderful time and we understood all the details of the these great places
