Jerusalem from One End to the Other- By Rail
By Amazing Jerusalem
About
The Jerusalem light rail spans the city, connecting history, conflict, people and differing narratives. It is a wonderful way to learn about the many facets of this city. We begin on Mount Herzl, the fist stop. We will visit the national cemetery and gain an understanding of the history of Israel. We continue on the light rail, pointing out the sites on the way, exiting at the the colorful Machane Yehuda market which we will tour and sample the street food. We continue on the rail, stopping at the center of town, Jaffa Street and King George Avenue, to get a sense of this historical and bustling area. We continue to the Damascus Gate Station, to visit both a Jewish Ultra-Orthodox neighborhood and the neighboring hub of the Arab section of the city at the Damascus Gate and Salah a Din Street. Here we will get a deep sense of the complexities of this multicultural city. We continue to the Arab and Jewish northern neighborhoods, asking the question: What unites us? What divides us?

- Sightsee118751274450 contributionsSuperb master tour guide! Our entire family highly recommends Ed! He was our guide for 2 days in Jerusalem on our 3 generation trip. Although the adults had toured Jerusalem many times, we learned so much from Ed! He was extremely sensitive to our group's varied needs, backgrounds & interests and was very informative and engaging. He understands children, and our grandchildren truly benefited from his skills and knowledge! They learned a lot and had fun. He is a mensch! There are not enough superlatives to praise him!Written September 5, 2023
- mitchwhite8180 contributionsIt was a transformation experienceJerusalem is the city of the Temple mount, the Western Wall and landmark churches. There is and aura of power and holiness that exudes from the relics of the city, but even more so from the ancient people of Jerusalem—the rabbis, the beautiful observant Jewish families, the boisterous kids playing on Shabbat. The veneration of the patriarchs and matriarchs whose merit has procured this noble life, the passion for Torah, permeates the city and sustains it. Yet there is more to Jerusalem then its ancient roots. Without modern Jerusalem, the picture is incomplete. The challenges of modern history and the vision inspiring Israel’s formation must be part of the experience of the tourist in Israel. The Ed Snitkoff Tour uniquely captures the modern dynamic of the eternal city in this larger context of Israel and Jerusalem’s modern rebirth and growth. The format of Ed’s tour is to use the Jerusalem Light Rail to trace the original 1948 Jordanian / Israeli borders and to point out the important sites, noting also the alternation of Arab and Jewish neighborhoods. The tour is eclectic, just as Ed is eclectic in his role as tour guide. He is knowledgeable, engaging, and affable, and carries a mysterious backpack from which he produces a variety of maps, articles, poems, and literary artifacts. Ed insists that all sensory faculties engage in this experience—you have to try gefilte fish and horseradish purchased in an outdoor market. I was most gratified by Ed’s attention to Israel’s national monuments, memorials, and educational sites. Where the Old City is immersed in the spirit of the founding patriarchs and matriarchs of the Jewish faith and Torah, Mount Hertzl, the National Cemetery and Yad Vashem venerate the founding fathers and mothers of the modern Jewish State—the vision of the Prophets for a free people in their homeland and the struggles and sacrifices of those who made it happen. Thank you Ed, for this unique and engaging encounter with our wonderful city Jerusalem! For anyone reading this, please consider going on the Ed Snitkoff Tour in Jerusalem. You will not regret it.Written November 22, 2022
- mbsignups1000 contributions70,000 Steps and a lifetime of memoriesHad the pure joy of experiencing Israel with someone who knows the country like no one else. Ed took me to the expected and unexpected spots in Jerusalem, Tel Aviv, Mosada, etc. If you are looking for someone who can customize an experience based your specific tastes and needs, there is no better guide than Ed.Written November 21, 2022
- 195patricek0 contributionsTrip of a lifetime, thanks to Ed!Just returned from the most amazing trip of my life, thank you Ed! I had never been to Israel before and really didn’t know what to expect, only what was taught in my Catholic upbringing. I was given a comprehensive tour! His knowledge of history and culture and archeology are superb. Thank you Ed, I would definitely recommend Ed as your guide!Written November 20, 2022
- Larry H0 contributionsPrivate Tour of Old JerusalemBOOK THIS TOUR! YOU WILL NOT REGRET IT!!!! If only TripAdvisor allowed for more stars!! It was an absolute pleasure spending the day with Ed in Old Jerusalem! His knowledge of the geography, history, various faiths, (Jewish, Christian, Muslim, etc) political influences, architecture and hidden gems in Jerusalem (amongst other things) is endless! The tour with Ed has literally made me re-think how I will visit cities in the future. Without him, my trip to Israel would not have been the same and should I plan to return, Ed will be one of the first calls I make. Ed, thank you for doing what you do. Your passion for guiding people is evident in your work and it was a pleasure spending time with you... I hope to see you again in the future. -Larry Hutton, Breckenridge, Colorado, USA.Written September 16, 2022
- markweinfeld0 contributionsExceptional tour guide, one of the best we have ever hadWe have been to Israel before and traveled many other places as well, and Ed is one of the best guides we have EVER had. We spent several days with Ed on our recent trip to Israel-- we toured Jerusalem, went to Masada and the Dead Sea, and then down to Ramon to see the crater and Ein Avdat nature reserve. Ed is extremely knowledgeable and experienced, but what makes Ed truly special is his flexibility and sensitivity. Without our even saying much, Ed could tell when we were tired and needed to shorten an activity or needed a break-- or when we should expand on an activity we really enjoyed. One day one of our family members had a health issue, and without even blinking, Ed rearranged the whole itinerary for the day to help us shop for some special items for this individual and made sure we had everything we needed, without wasting any time. His knowledge of how to navigate everything from parking to shopping for souvenirs is unparalleled. Ed related well to each of our very different teenagers, engaging them in conversation when they wanted to chat, but also letting them be when they needed personal space. Ed was willing to discuss Israeli culture, history, and politics, and gave personal opinions when we asked him his views, but also listened to us and our kids when we had opinions on various topics. He was always pleasant, always engaging, and always respectful. He had lots of energy but could also sit and relax with us when appropriate. He was generous with his time and his attention. We can't recommend Ed highly enough. We are so fortunate to have chosen him as our guide. Whether this is your first trip to Israel or your 5th, you would be very lucky to work with Ed!Written August 28, 2022
- megginr20190 contributionsWonderful day in the old city with EvaI had a wonderful day with Eva in the old city today. She took me in back ways and explained the history and multiple perspectives of all the stories. I appreciated that we could discuss stories on many levels-historical, spiritual, cultural. I just enjoyed spending time with her and seeing all the amazing and beautiful places. Thank you Eva!Written May 9, 2022
- lindawO5742GB0 contributionsA wonderful on line way to visit the Holy LandI have been on a number of on-line tours of the Holy Land. Mainly my guide has been Amit. I have learnt so much over the last year. I have "been" all around Jerusalem, to the Sea of Galilee, Masada and many more places in the Holy Land. Amit's knowledge is wide spread and his presentation is friendly. Amit always has scripture - from both Old and New testaments on the places visited. It was a joy to be in some of these places without being pushed by a great crowd of other people. Look at the presentations he is planning - especially around Easter as I am sure you will find them uplifting at this time when we cannot visit the Holy Land.Written March 10, 2021

- 136StevenA0 contributionsTouring Israel with Ed is incredibly enjoyable and informativeI led a virtual tour of Israel over four sessions with Ed. We had 40-50 participants in each session. Ed's tour included Tel Aviv, the south and the north, and Jerusalem. I highly recommend touring anywhere in Israel with Ed. His knowledge of ancient and modern history is vast, he is humorous and fun while also being interesting and personable. Many of us have been to Israel many times and still learned so much from Ed. I highly recommend taking a break and enjoying a tour even virtually.Written November 15, 2020
- Ben P0 contributionsWow! Incredible tour!!I was traveling with my 6yr old son, and couldn’t have picked a better guide! Ed brought some fun things for the little one, and really brought the history to life! He was incredibly considerate of our needs for breaks, and easily made adjustments to the plan to suit the kiddos mood. I really can’t recommend Ed enough! Engaging for all ages, extremely knowledgeable, considerate, friendly, and sweet. Book without hesitation (I will definitely be repeating)!Written February 1, 2020
- Annthestitcher0 contributionsEd is the very best. He is knowledgeable, kind, and preparedEd was our guide on our Israel trip this past December. The group ranged in age from 5 to 70 plus. The tour ran smoothly and he was so very knowledgeable about the sites all over Israel. He prepared us well for our extension to Jordan letting us know how it should work, and it was very smooth. I cannot say enough wonderful things about Ed and it was truly a blessing having him as our guide. We went touring thru many rainy days and it was still wonderful.Written January 12, 2020
- BryonWasserman0 contributionsFantastic Guide-Wonderful ExperienceEd was a fantastic guide for our tour group of families with children. Ed brought a lot of enthusiasm, humor and an amazing command of a broad range of subject matter to his work. He previously worked as a youth adviser and did a great job keeping the kids engaged while at the same time providing a compelling and educational experience for the adults. Ed is/was an American Rabbi who made Aliyah 30 years ago and as a result was able offer a lot of interesting insights about Israel and Israeli life to an American audience. It's clear he really feels passionate about his work and teaching visitors to Israel. Having Ed as our guide added a whole dimension to our tour. I'd strongly recommend him for your tour.Written January 2, 2020
- whereIgoforfun0 contributionsWonderful private guide! If you are looking for a very friendly, highly educated, very flexible, extremely well informed private guide, Ed Snitkoff is the guide for you. I even called him later for advice about other things Israeli. He was very kind and helpful. We had some mobility issues to deal with this visit, and he was absolutely great about it. We really could not be happier about our choice in guide. I personally prefer the flexibility of a private guide over the group tours. When I’m hungry, I want food, and I may want to stay more or less time at any given site...and we can personalize our agenda. Personally, it is very important to me to have a guide who is highly educated and experienced in the subject matter. Ed is that and more. Friendly. Approachable. Knowledgeable. Flexible. We feel truly fortunate. Thank you Ed.Written November 28, 2019
- Fritzenheimer20170 contributionsAmazing experienceWe were blessed to have an opportunity to tour the Old City and the City of David on Chol hamoed Sukkot with Rav Ed. Ed is so much more than a terrific tour guide. He is an extraordinary teacher, whose Rabbinic background and knowledge brings the history of Jerusalem and the story of the people Israel alive in a unique and unforgettable experience.Written October 18, 2019

We know Jerusalem well. We have lived here and studied here. But Ed Snitkoff gave us a new understanding of this amazing city and a deep appreciation for the new and the old. Ed is engaging, informative and he has a great sense of humor. He brings together history, sociology and tradition with great stories and insights into the plaves we visited from Mount Herzl to Pisgat Zeev. Even if you have been to Jerusalem many times we recommend this great day tour of the city.

I booked the Jerusalem historic tour with Ryan and it was the most amazing time ever! I can absolutely recommend this tour, one of the best things I’ve ever done and seen. Ryan knows everything about the city and about the nicest places in old Jerusalem! One of the best guides I‘ve ever seen. 7 hours in that city passed so quickly...it was so exciting what Ryan told us.
And also another important point to mention: no stop at souvenir shops!!!
Thanks to Ryan and Tony, an unforgettable and inspiring day today...would love to come back and do the tour again.

Riding the light train in Jerusalem can be a fun, neat, terrified, stressful or a very pleasant ride. It all depends on what time of the day you picked.
In the morning rush hour, you're bound to be pushed, potentially walked on and maybe be rough by two tickets conductors within 30 seconds. At other times, when the train is not full, the ride is very enjoyable.
You purchase the tickets at every station. It takes American credit cards and very easy to manage and move on. As soon as you step on the train you MUST validate the tickets by sliding them into a reader next to the door. If you don't, and a conductor checked and finds you haven't validated your ticket, it can get ugly and I've read newspaper reports about violence on the train. I like to follow the rules, so there was no issue. At one point, I could reach the reader and a young lady saw that I'm trying, and she took my tickets and was able to validate them for me. This is NOT a typical behavior in Israel.
The ride itself is smooth. The automatic system announces the next stop in Hebrew and English. There's also a rolling display of the next stop.
At every station, there's a timer that shows how many minutes before the train reaches the stop. We never waited for more than three minutes.
Overall, I enjoyed the rides. The trains are well maintained and in top shape.
Highly recommended.
