Day execution from colombo to galle

By Sigiriya The Ancient Rock Fortress
About
Galle is a city on the southwest coast of Sri Lanka. It’s known for Galle Fort, the fortified old city founded by Portuguese colonists in the 16th century. Stone sea walls, expanded by the Dutch, encircle car-free streets with architecture reflecting Portuguese, Dutch and British rule. Notable buildings include the 18th-century Dutch Reformed Church. Galle Lighthouse stands on the fort’s southeast tip.

Less crowded late afternoon, ascent is brief but hard
It is absolutely as amazing as it looks. Head up in late afternoon for the slowest time and a terrific sunset view, but heads up there are some wall paintings you can miss as the site closes at 530 (tho tourists are allowed to hang around about an hour longer). To make sure you don’t miss these, take the first fork to the right after the wall of stairs, climb up to see pics, then head back to continue your ascent. We websites to catch this on the way back and just missed it. Heads up the ascent is brief but BRUTAL. Do not attempt in middle of the afternoon, and bring plenty of water, but careful with it as there are no restrooms the entire time. Doable without hassleif you bring a couple energy drinks and pace yourself, or if you are reasonably fit.

Just a tick box exercise really.
This place has great views and the longer you look around the more you can see. It is important to go early because the more people the more treacherous and dull it becomes. There are a lot of people who don’t take great care on the steps so you need to be aware of others. You do need to be physically capable to get up this, it took my wife and I 30 minutes as she needed breaks and is reasonably fit but it is a big elevation gain over a very short period and approximately 1km walk in total. It is expensive but it has to be done i guess!

      Don’t miss this
I did a private 10 day tour of the highlights of Sri Lanka so can not recommend any of the various tours. I can recommend hiring a private driver for at least a few days to get you to the most interesting sites in a very efficient way. With the driver we also stopped to get coconut juice or try local curd and honey or take pictures of elephants and monitor lizards. With several people it is cost-effective and you absolutely do NOT want to try and rent a car and drive yourself unless you have a lot of previous experience with this type of traffic. Anyway…Sigirya is another must do excursion. There is quite a climb to the top, up rock and cement steps and up metal steps attached to the cliff face. If heights bother you, be aware. Hiring a guide is not expensive $12-15, and you will get lots of information. Or you can read up ahead of time and get the same info. Very interesting history of parricide, sibling rivalry, family feuds, and a playboy king who lived up top with his one wife and 500 concubines. Amazing use of water for heating and cooling, with conduits and pools and sanitary systems. Great views. Fascinating history. It reminded me a little of Egyptian ruins, and the magnificence that has been eroded by time and weather.

      Nice but very expensive
They are exploiting visitors with the price of entrance. What is nice is nature and generally the place which is impressive. They had a civilization, but was way inferior to Greeks and Romans.

A visit to Sigiriya is a Must
It's truly one of the wonders of the world. Before my trip I researched numerous attractions in Sri Lanka, and Sigiriya consistently emerged as a top recommendation - it's undoubtedly an icon of Sri Lanka tourism, the site is breathtakingly beautiful and offers a wealth of historical and cultural insights.

      Breathtaking and emotional …
Getting there at the crack of dawn is a MUST - avoids the crowds (and the heat), and you can watch the sun rise from the top. This is a magical place steeped in history, and the scale of construction (now mainly ruins) is beyond belief given the limited resources (mechanical and technical) available all those many many years ago. This place is has a surreal quality - breathtaking in its grandeur, scale and inaccessibility, and on an emotional scale to that of Petra in Jordan, albeit not nearly as expansive. A ‘not to be missed’ opportunity if ever visiting the beautiful Country of Sri Lanka …

      Family-Friendly Adventure
Exploring Sigiriya Lions Rock with kids was a delightful adventure! The captivating ancient ruins and panoramic views fascinated them, and the climb, though challenging, was manageable. The knowledgeable guide from Tourslanka ensured a family-friendly experience, making it an educational and enjoyable outing for all. Highly recommended for families!

      Amazing experience
Wow what an experience. Firstly you walk through the ancient gardens, ponds and ruins before initially climbing up the lions paws - after this it’s a little scary climbing the metal stairs to the top with people going in both directions but it’s well worth the effort for the views and ruins at the top. Highly recommended

      View from the top
Like all sightseeing points the prices are quiet high especially for foreigners, for us from SAARC countries if you have your passport you get a 50% discount. The climb is overrated, young old and many seeming unfit easily reached the top, the fresco area behind the mirror wall opens later, so if you climb early and come down quick you will miss it. It is worth the effort of waking early and climbing as the views are spectacular.

Good driver, punctual, safe, polite and was great value for money. He picked us up at 3am and arrived 10 mins early. We used him from sigiriya to arugam bay and we arrived faster than Google maps predicted. Highly recommend.
