- 1ALZHIR is a colloquial name that comes from the abbreviation АЛЖИР, which stands for “Akmola camp for the wives of traitors to the Motherland” (in Russian). The camp, which was the largest women’s camp in the Soviet Union, operated between 1938 and 1953 and was a place of human tragedy during the period of Stalinist repression. It is estimated that more than 18,000 prisoners passed through the camp, some of whom died there. Today, the site of the camp hosts a museum and memorial to these victims of political repression and totalitarianism. It is located 40km west of Nur-Sultan. About the operator
Don’t take it from us – here’s what people have to say about this operator:
- JpS5900 contributionsShort Quick TripI arrived late from my flight from Almaty but the guide & driver where waiting patiently. It was a bit rainy but me & the guide made the most out of it. This is a good introduction to the main sites of Astana if you don’t have much time as it covers the key sites. I would have stayed longer but my flight was the next day. The guide was also flexible if I wanted to change some of the itinerary, which was good as I was exhausted from the flight. The guide also spoke good English & very accommodating. Will definitely visit again soon for a longer tripWritten January 17, 2025
- gusw7930 contributionsAstana the Old CityWe had an enriching experience on The Old City Tour in Astana with our family. The tour offered a fascinating glimpse into the city's history, taking us beyond its modern, futuristic architecture and into its cultural heart. Our guide was incredibly informative and made the journey through Astana’s old city come alive with stories and historical context. We explored the traditional and Soviet-era buildings, which provided a contrast to the city's iconic contemporary structures. Visiting landmarks like the Old Mosque and the Central Concert Hall gave us a deeper understanding of Astana’s roots and its development over the years. One of the highlights of the tour was seeing the blend of cultures in the old city – a reflection of Kazakhstan’s rich history and diversity. The slower pace of the tour allowed us to really appreciate the details, with plenty of time to stop, take photos, and explore the local area. The tour also included a visit to local markets and charming streets, where we got a sense of daily life in the city and even had the chance to interact with locals. It was a great experience for our family, providing a perfect mix of history, culture, and personal interaction. Overall, The Old City Tour in Astana was a memorable way to explore the deeper, more traditional side of the city. It was well-paced, informative, and gave us a new appreciation for Astana's fascinating history and cultural evolution. We highly recommend it to anyone looking to experience a different, more historical side of Kazakhstan’s capital.Written January 5, 2025
- phillF2401VZ0 contributionsWonderful learning experience! The tour was AMAZING! Kamilla, our tour guide, was welcoming, professional, and enthusiastic from the start. We learned so much about Astana and saw much of the city in just 4 hours! Thank you Kamilla and To-Go-In Astana for a great learning experience!Written September 21, 2024
- CMR2940 contributionsWell worth doing!Coming from England, it made me smile when I was was told that I would see some "really old" buildings on this tour..."over 100 years old" ! But I guess it's all relative! But the tour gave me a great insight into the history of this fascinating country, and I'm extremely glad that I did it. Kamila's English was brilliant, and her knowlede excellent, about everything from the pre-Russian era through to modern day. I especially loved the street where there was an example of Russian-Empire-time, Soviet and then Independence architecture all next to each other. Well worth doing.Written May 21, 2024
- CMR2940 contributionsGreat intro to AstanaThis tour was a fantastic introduction to Astana. We didn't stick to the published itinerary, but everywhere that we went was so interesting. - pranalis20150 contributionsNot worth the price they chargeWe did like this tour operator they are not at all good. First we booked from viator they cancelled the trip saying we don’t offer pick up from airport and it will be ask upon asking she said to and fro will be 21000 Tenge and our to and fro trip on Yandex cost us 3000 Tenge I mean such a huge difference. She asked us to come to mega mall our guide was Gulzan…. All the sightseeing except mosque, bayterek and one mall rest all was shown from car for that she charged us 64000 tenge for 3 hours ride….. The guide was just in some hurry to finish wrap up and end the tour upon asking if we can visit their stop for photos she said not included in the itinerary though it was there…. Overall it was bad choice we could have easily roam around with Yandex and saved half the cost…. Please if you booking check with them where all will they stop or will it be…Written March 2, 2024

- HamuBal0 contributionsExcellent Tour ExperienceAbsolutely loved my time in Nur Sultan thanks to To-Go-In Astana. I took two tours with them and would completely recommend them. Theirs was the only company that accommodated me with my bookings that were made pre-covid but couldn’t be used because of lockdowns. Zhanel was amazing handling all the communications and being entirely professional, polite and diligent. Correspondence was prompt and clear. My guides, Kunikey for a full day tour of Nur Sultan and Nargiz for a tour to ALZHIR were excellent guides and hosts. They both answered my numerous questions about a range of subjects with great zeal, patience and candor. I did not feel for a second that I was with a stranger. I got to have a traditional Kazakh lunch with Kunikey as well. All in all, they provide a very superior experience and I cannot thank them enough.Written April 18, 2022

We were very lucky to have Didara as our guide!
As a historian, she knows almost everything about the city, the culture and the country. We also had the opportunity to talk about political and social issues. As Didara also showed interest in our lives, it was possible to discuss similarities and differences.
Finally, Didara unscheduledly showed us the bazaar and helped us with our onward journey.
