Azerbaijan is not touristy, overlooked, has a medieval walled city, and the very modern Baku city. Out of Baku there are pretty mountain villages where time has stood still, and a lot of geothermal activity on the plains. The Intourist boutique hotel overlooking the Baku Eye and Caspian Sea is excellent, very relaxing looking out to sea from the outdoor lounge bar

What a great tour. Our guide Vafa was amazing, so knowledgeable and helpful. We started by going up the hillside beside the Flame Towers, to see the 1990 memorial area and botanical gardens, including Martyr's Alley and Badamdar, with spectacular views down onto the whole city and coastline. We would have got the funicular down to the old city but on Mondays it is shut. Worth noting that a lot of things are shut on Mondays. However this didn't dent our enjoyment! There is tons to see and do in the old city, which is beautiful, full of little windy streets, shops, market stalls and galleries, and key sights like the Maiden's Tower, Shirvanshah's Palace, the wonderful Carpet Museum and the Boulevard. Simply a great area to wander around. Our guide was very thoughtful and found us nice shady places to rest from the heat. The area between Fountain Square and the Boulevard is great for lunch or dinner. On this tour you can spot lots of places you might want to go back and see in more detail later. I'd strongly recommend this trip on your first or second day in Baku. It's great for orientation, and will give you a good feel for the vibe and layout of the town as a whole.
