- V7472ALbarryw0 contributionsA Treasure of Cultural ExchangeMy best friend, her mom and I were visiting Hanoi for only three days during a whirlwind tour of Vietnam. Several websites and video guides suggested the Hanoi Free Private Tours and we were happily surprised that we could set one up with just a few hours' notice. But the best was yet to come. Our guide, Gracie, met us at our hotel and offered to come up with a customized tour, skipping some of what we'd seen the day before, and showing us sites with historical and cultural significance that deserved the knowledge and context an experienced guide could give. And wow, she was amazing! Gracie helped us understand thousands of years of history, and as we toured the Ho Chi Minh museum, and its surrounding neighborhood, she really helped us understand how the Vietnamese people have successfully defended their culture and sovereignty against some of the most powerful governments in world history (the Chinese, then the French, and most recently the Americans). The three of us are American, so we appreciated that our peoples can share understanding and compassion for each other. We ended our tour at Chùa Một Cột, aka One Pillar Pagota, which is a rebuilt Buddhist temple that was breathtaking and was a fitting end to a tour rooted in genuine cultural exchange. The Hanoi Free Private Tours has been the highlight of our trip so far and I would give it—and Gracie—six stars if I could!Written December 2, 2024

Having booked at short notice we were very pleased to get a 11.30am slot with Mai a local student who uses her knowledge of the city to practice English speaking with tourists on the tour.
Mai was joined by a fellow student who was out on her first tour learning the ropes. Both were very friendly, attentive and ensured the tour was based on what we wanted to see.
We were very interested in trying local street food and Mai made sure we experienced some places outside of the busy tourist parts along the way. The food was amazing!
Both ladies were fantastic and very funny! We shared cultural differences and learned a lot about Hanoi life.
We thoroughly recommend this experience : )

Had a brilliant day with our excellent tour guides Van and Mai. They were very punctually and picked us up at our hotel at 2pm. They asked us exactly what we wanted to do and gave us lots of options. They brought us to the literature university in Hanoi and gave us great insight into the history of the place. They shared their own experiences of growing up in Hanoi and it was so interesting to get the locals point of view. They also showed us how to catch a bus in Hanoi and took us to a local cafe to try the Hanoi speciality egg coffee. They gave us lots of recommendations and were overall so friendly and informative. Would definitely recommend this tour and tour guides Van and Mai!

The Free Tour was an incredible opportunity to learn more about Hanoi, especially since it was my sister and I’s first time visiting the city! Our student guide, Thai (Thomas), was incredibly knowledgeable and friendly, which made the experience memorable. He shared many personal anecdotes and humor throughout the tour, and it was easy to ask questions and learn more about each landmark. We were able to explore multiple popular tourist attractions, including trying the famous egg coffee, visiting the Ngoc Son Temple, St. Joseph cathedral, Hao Lo prison, and train street (among a few other stops). Thomas knew the city very well and made sure we were safe navigating the roads with all the traffic. As part of the Free Tour, we were recommended to help pay for the student tour guide if there were any tickets or food involved, which was not a big deal. Thomas was able to get a student discount, and having a tour guide provide historical context was 100% worth it! Additionally, Thomas went above and beyond by sending a list of restaurant recommendations to us after our tour ended. His recommendations were really good and many locals also ate there. Although tipping was not required, forgetting to tip Thomas at the end of our tour was one of our biggest regrets, as he totally deserved it! Considering he was a local student, his English was very comprehensible and the tour felt comparable to a five star paid tour. Regardless, we had a fantastic time and would highly recommend a Free Tour to other tourists visiting the area. If you happen to get Thomas as your tour guide, you are in for a great experience. :)

My guide was Daisy and she was an excellent guide. She was flexible and very information about her culture. My favourite part was learning the role each person plays to rasie a child. Her English was easy to understand and she was very polite and cared about my wellbeing. Thanks for having this services its given me a new appreciation for Hanoi.

I had such a fun time with Andy exploring Old Quarter together. We walked around Hoan Kiem Lake and saw the Heritage House before sharing stories about ourselves over lunch. I felt like I made a good friend by the end of our trip! Would highly recommend this special tour for anyone, especially students or young working professionals looking to meet other young folks.

Except reservation fee it was a free walking tour, so I should not comply, but the advice to the student tourguides would be to have more organised schedule not to go back several times to the same streets and places during the trip. Also English understanding could be improved. As well as they could be trained or watch more proffessional walking tour organisation - like for example telling some general fact about Vietnam and the city, some funny stories and jokes. Tell some interesting facts about the streets and places we are just passing by.
Although our tourguides were very kind, all that above were missing.

We just experienced today our private walking tour with two nice young students - Hanh Dung and Thomas. It was perfect, we walked around the city, first we saw Hoam Kiem Lake and Ngoc Son temple, than we visited Hoa Lo prison, after we take an egg coffee on the train street and then we visited beautiful Temple of literature.
Our guides were very nice, talked good english, especially Hanh Dung was excellent in english, she knew a lot about vietnamese history and architecture, it was easy and fun talking to her. I really recommend this tour, you will see a lot of interesting sites and with a guide its easy to navigate throught the city and learn a lot about vietnamese people, their culture and history.

Mun met us at our hotel and took us on a walking tour of the city, tailored to our needs. She was full of information on culture, history and many aspects of life in Vietnam. We enjoyed a delicious Vietnamese coffee and Bun Cha lunch in a small family run restaurant which we would never have found on our own. This group is providing an excellent free service and I cannot recommend them highly enough.

An amazing experience with our guides David and Big. They were generous with their time, knowledge, commentary and sense of humor. They had a clear plan which they offered and delivered wonderfully. Our walk included several key sites all within walking distance of each other, plenty of commentary about each one, lunch at a very popular local restaurant and also a coffee stop with local specialty in this location. They even organized our transport back to our hotel. All In all, thoroughly recommend and would suggest a worthwhile investment of your time if you are in Hanoi. Tour itself is free and we had to pay only for entrance tickets and food for ourselves and our guides but the cost is very low and the experience very high. Very pleased we were recommended to do this.

We loved the free walking tour we took with our guide Thao. At our request, she took us to Hoa Lo prison and Hoan Kiem Lake, leading us to the water puppet theater at the end of the tour. She shared a lot of interesting information and was absolutely delightful to spend time with. I thoroughly enjoyed helping her practice her English — her enthusiasm is heartwarming. Also, when I started having trouble in the Hanoi heat and humidity, she dashed off to get me water. So kind. I highly recommend spending time wandering the city with Minh — the connection we made with her was a true highlight of our visit to Hanoi.

Hi,
Can you give an estimate of how much walking it is in total? We will have a 5year old and are looking at doing the tour in December? Do customers sometimes incorporate transport (taxi?) Into the tour?
Many thanks,
Miriam

It's really up to you for how much walking you want to do or if you'd like to use transportation. We walked for about 2 hours, but Annie, our guide, would have done anything we wanted.

To whom it may concern
My girlfriend and I are planning a month-long journey to Southeast Asia. We’re going to be volunteering teaching medical residents in Cambodia during the middle two weeks and visiting Vietnam the first week. I also have a nonprofit group called “healer under the red moon”. The group feeds underserved communities and checks their blood pressures. I would love to go on your food tour and meet you but was wondering if there may be the opportunity to cook for the underserved community near Hanoi and checked their blood pressure‘s as an event.
If you think there may be an opportunity to do this, I would love to find out more information and work with you.
We are planning to come in October 2022
Sincerely yours
Chris Brodkin MD
