About the operator
Don’t take it from us – here’s what people have to say about this operator:
- Sarah G0 contributionsWater puppet entertainmentReally enjoyed the water puppet show. There were English & French descriptions of the stories projected on to the wall. Some of the stories were quite funny. The music was very loud.Written October 10, 2024
- PaddyKar0 contributionsInteresting and informativeLike a number of others, we found the various story depictions a little hard to follow, given the show is in Vietnamese. There are storylines at the start of each sketch so you get the general idea. Nonetheless, it was entertaining and the performers skillful. The sets are very well done and the musicians are great: the volume could be lower especially for those with hearing aids. There were lots of little insects flying around so maybe that could be fixed. There is the ever present problem of people in front videoing the show with their cameras held high, obscuring your view (sigh). Well worth the effort and money.Written August 20, 2024
- yvonnesL7908LW0 contributionsVery interestingWe learned how intricate puppets are made and the history of this 1,000-year-old tradition started by the peasants on the Red River Delta of the north. The puppets are suspended over water and directed by puppet masters who must sit, semi-submerged, for hours at a time within the productions, manipulating underwater reach rod controls to animate the figures from behind a curtain. The French used to call these puppets “the Souls of the Vietnamese rice fields”. The puppets are made of lacquered, water-resistant fig wood, with surrounding scenery depicting villagers, farm animals, dragons, and in some cases modern vehicles.Written July 1, 2024
- howardl1060 contributionsFun and entertaining! It was delightful and enjoyable to see this 50 minute water puppet show. The puppeteers were quite talented and we finally saw them at the end of the show as they took their bows. The music was provided by live musicians and singers also. The 10 short stories all had some humor in them and made the audience chuckle. There was one story that involved fire breathing dragons simulated by live fireworks which were quite smoky so that was a small bit of annoyance for some of the audience. Otherwise, a very entertaining show and great exposure to this delightful North Vietnamese art form.Written April 23, 2024
- Martyn D0 contributionsAnother Puppet ShowThink we have overdosed on puppet theatres, that said I think the Lotus theatre was slightly better. The traditional stories were the same as we've seen before, but the puppets seemed slightly larger and more dramatic. A screen either side of the stage summarised each story, which is useful for the tourist. Again the show lasts less than one hour, but nevertheless enjoyable - especially as we don't have anything like this back home. We bought our tickets from the box office the day before to avoid any confusion with online ticketing, as some people appeared to struggle getting in with e-tickets.Written April 21, 2024
- Departure19930 contributionsGive it a tryI wasn’t sure if I would enjoy it before we went but but took a chance and booked it. Really good value. It was enjoyable and I would recommend any one to give it a tryWritten April 18, 2024
- T_L_Norman0 contributionsA fun experienceWe were taken to this as part of our tour so can’t comment on price, but was certainly something quite different and generally entertaining. The show is a series of short stories performed by puppets in the water to live music and song. There is a short narrative or description of each story projected onto a screen in a corner above the stage which makes it easier to follow what is happening. Unfortunately the residual smoke from fire breathing dragons makes taking pictures very difficult as it lingers in the air. One of our party suffered from asthma and found it irritated her for quite some time after. All in all a fun short experience, even if the seats were extremely uncomfortableWritten February 7, 2024
- Winnall010 contributionsLotus Water Puppet TheatreWe were all completely mesmerised by this charming show. Such skill and atristry evident in the handling of the puppets themselves and a delightful little series of short tales highlighting the variety of puppets. The fire-breathing dragon was a particlar favourite! Considerable good humour in the final sketch with great interaction between full size adult performers and a range of puppets, including a fox that manages to run up a tree to hide! Terrific fun for all ages.Written January 15, 2024
- alexhW5066SK0 contributions🦊 v 🦆So far the highlight of the three year olds trip. He loved the fox eating the duck. 🦊 eats 🦆. Nice and clean. Very well priced. Hint. Get in early, tickets sell fast.Written December 22, 2023
- HMKaren0 contributionsFun and creative -- and inexpensive! This was so much fun! The puppetry was really great, and musicians provided live music. We only paid $11 each for our tickets for the 50 minute show. If you're traveling with kids I bet they'd love it.Written November 25, 2023
- 474colek0 contributionsEnjoyable showI enjoyed the show here, a good deal at 80,000 VND cash for a balcony seat. The impressive puppetry and music, and the special effects (those dragons!) were delightful. I couldn’t find the show calendar online, but when I was there in Oct 2023 the performances were generally at 17:15 most days. Tip for those who don’t speak Vietnamese: I was sitting on the right side of the theater (facing the stage) and wish I’d been sitting on the left side since I couldn’t fully see the English scene descriptions, only the French ones. There were seats on the left but, by the time I realized it was an issue, it seemed too late to move so I stayed for the 50 minute duration and still enjoyed myself.Written October 26, 2023
- louiseskerritt340 contributionsShow with a differenceWe bought our tickets for 150k earlier on the day of the performance and were seated in the front row. Enjoyable experience with a difference with very talented puppeteers, musicians and performers- takes 50 minutes which is perfect to fit in before dinner - well done💫Written October 7, 2023
- Travel-future-ahoy0 contributionsAwesome insight into VietnamGot our tickets the day before (around 2:30pm) for the 6:30pm show and scored front row seats in the Centre for 150K VND each person. The schedule for the week had at least one show at 5:15 everyday. Awesome performance. It’s really a must do in my opinion. Had a really informative display board in English on the right (and I think French on the left) describing each story/scene.Written September 28, 2023
- orrdin0 contributionsSurprisingly enjoyableI walked in expecting the novelty to quickly wear off and the. To be bored but somehow the show was engaging throughout its 50 mins which was just the right length to experience this unique type of art.Written September 25, 2023
- Travelwiththebrunton0 contributionsNice experience. This is a beautiful show that lasted around 50minutes. Towards the end the two young kids (7&10) were a bit bored but that was only about the final 5 mins they were over it. It’s a lovely art form, and some beautiful musicians adding to the spark of it all along the way. Over all it was not expensive (200k front rows, 150k middle rows, 100k back rows) but if you do not book tickets early, especially if there’s multiple people then you will either miss out on a good seat, if not completely.Written August 19, 2023

Scam.
There is still a line that you have to wait with everyone else who has or has not booked tickets online and booking with this company does not guarantee the booked time. We booked 5:15pm and was confirmed by this company but the theatre said that they were full so had to wait one and a half hours for the next show, which is not a big deal but when you are paying 4 times the price so you have confirmed seats it’s kind of annoying. Tickets at the theatre were about $5 while through this company $20.
I suppose it’s all part travelling being scammed into paying higher prices or for a service that is not provided like with this company. I complained to the company but the reply was delayed, smug and unhelpful.
The actual show was fun, loud and I’m glad we saw it.

You simply have to watch it. Its a traditional water puppet act with northern Vietnamese folk music. It has action, comedy, drama and mystery. What else can you ask for. Its a 50 mins show and let me tell you, you will be entertained every minute of it. Just sit back and enjoy the show. You will be amazed by the wonderful music and singing by the performers. Take a look at the program on the pic that I have posted.
Just go watch it. Worth the time and money.

Booking was a breeze, the show began on time. This is the first water puppet show we saw and we liked it. It was in Vietnamese but the large screens had the story in English and French and so was able to follow

We visited at the end of the day as part of our guided tour. The show was fun and my 2 teenage sons enjoyed it! Which was great as I was afraid they won’t like it. The show consists of several episodes and each has description in English and French that comes on the wall for everyone to read. The puppet masters are very skilful . It is a great form of entertainment. You could also see a short version in ethnical museum performed on the lake. However this show is in a very comfortable air con theatre with great sound and life music ! Really glad we managed to experience this

The show was amazing and language though in Vietnamese was not a barrier. English translation was available on the LED screen. The simple child like joy of watching simple narratives made the show enjoyable. Until half the show we were trying to guess how the puppeteers were operating especially during the narrative of the fox trying to get the ducks. Later we did figure it out but the uniqueness of this form made it worthwhile.

This was a fun show, puppeteers are very skilled. There are a number of ‘stories’ making up the 50 minute show. Screens with description of the scenes in English and French are displayed giving description of each story.
In all, very enjoyable and worthwhile example of traditional Vietnamese storytelling.

The show was fabulous and we are glad we saw it. Definitely need to book ahead but don’t book the deluxe tickets. We did and got seated in the general area. No moving when I raised it! Disappointed to have paid way more then necessary

A very enjoyable 50 minute show, spectacular, entertaining and fun all at !00,000 Dong (£3.30). The theatre itself is a lovely old French building with original seats, the music and performance were excellent.

Unlike other reviews I wouldn't say this is a must-see attraction. However, it only cost us $6 and lasted an hour so it is fine. The music was nice. I did go with 2 twenty-somethings so maybe that colored the experience.

We took in this show at the end of our first day in Vietnam, after a 12 hour flight and then a day of sightseeing. It was spectacular and very enjoyable, just wish we hadn't been so tired.
