    Old Phuket Town
    Stop: 4 hours
Are you ready to explore why Phuket is often considered one of Thailand's top foodie hotspots? Greet your guide in the cool of the morning at 10am outside the city's famous central market and begin your walking tour weaving your way through the streets passing a glorious Chinese temple en route to try a Phuketian classic snack of spiced rice cooked in banana leaves. Back down at the market, your guide will take you to a hidden little teashop which serves the local Burmese working community. Here, you'll try Burmese curries, crispy samosas and other delights accompanied by naans freshly cooked in their wood-fired oven and washed down with sweet tea. Just down the road is a fine outdoor fresh fruit and vegetable market where your guide will explain the ingredients that go into Thai cuisine and sample exotic fruits, juices are other tasty morsels like deep-fried coconut balls and prawns cooked in banana leaves.  Continue on your culinary adventure by working your way over a bowl of rich Hokkien noodles with a pair of chopsticks (don't worry, cutlery's available too) from a little restaurant that's been serving up the good stuff for decades. Don't worry, it's not over yet. Your guide will take you to a local indoor market famed for its fresh spring rolls filled with cured pork and topped with sweet sauce and pickles and coconut pork skewers served with rich peanut satay and zingy ajat cucumber relish.  It's unthinkable not to visit Phuket Old Town without delving into the sweets. Your guide will take you for a particularly special Phuket-style crepe cooked over fiery coals, a refreshing and vivid iced dessert and finishing on sweet milky tea and flaky rotis at a joint that's been knocking them out for years.  Return back to the central market where the tour ends. You'll return back to your hotel with a deeper understanding of Phuketian cuisine. Be warned, the food on the rest of your vacation will now solely disappoint.

We went on the tour with our young kids (3&6) and we all had an amazing time. Nam, our guide was brilliant with them. The eldest ate everything on offer at every restaurant (with an ice cream substitute at one of the curry stops), the little one being quite picky still tried almost everything at all stops. It was a hot day but Nam made sure we stayed in the shade when we could and stopped for an ice cream half way round for the kids to cool off. The total distance walked was approx 1.5-2km but never much more than a few hundred meters before stopping so kids had not trouble at all with the walking as it’s all very flat. My advice is do not have breakfast and don’t go flat out at the first few restaurants as there is soo much food. All of it is delicious and the tour is well planned, with seats reserved at busy restaurants and orders placed prior to arrival so it was served almost immediately after being seated. Would highly recommend to any families (and indeed couples or singles) as the food was not only fantastic but also a great insight to the history of the town.

From the minute we met our guide we knew we were in good hands. Nam has a great energy, love and knowledge of all things Phuket Town. Staying at the beach resorts can be quite isolating and lacking in cultural experiences. On this tour with Nam we felt fully immersed in the local food scene. At each restaurant the history of the food, the owner and the building was explained and as Nam said, understanding the full story of the foods we eat magnifies our enjoyment of every mouthful. Be warned that there is an awful lot of food to be tasted so be sure to pace yourself. We were exploding by the end so thank goodness it was a walking tour. Thank you Nam for a great experience.

Hard to add anything that hasn't been said before. The tour guide Pema is outstanding, the things we try are delicious, and the amount we eat is insane, and almost all from shops who only cook one item to perfection. I think we spent 6 hours all together and I could barely move by the end of it even though I had skipped all meals that day. After doing a bunch of food tours around the world, this one struck me as the "gold standard food tour"

Pema, our food tour guide, really worked hard to give us the eating experience of a lifetime. This is a street food tour so one has to see this review in that light. There are so many foods on the street and served in an endless number of places. Pema brought us to the best of each and explained what was in the food, about each chef’s secret recipes, and the history of the eating place and its family. We tried so many different foods we lost count. But we simply adored Pema. This is a must do tour for foodies.

Excellent way to eat like a local.

Nam was our guide and we had an amazing walk through Old Town. Nam was a great guide - informative and chatty about the town’s culture.

Our group was only 5 ppl for the morning tour. All food and drinks were provided. Parking was easy - we arrived on a scooter and parked at the meeting point (2 baht per hour).

Photos attached. In one photo you can see me refusing to eat more food (I’m in pink) so come hungry!

I walked up the stairs to the meeting point in front of the central market to meet my guide. Little did I know this kind, unassuming native would share with me her love of her home town and some of the best local specialities. Our 4 hour scheduled trip turned into in a private 7 hour belly busting walking tour of Phuket. Anthony Bourdain would have loved her as the fifth generation Phuketian showed me the past influences and history of Phuket, to see beyond the old facades and new murals to see the human story, to see her community, and the love of great food.

Behind the storefronts is a story of the past slowly succumbing to the future, a story repeated around the world of the pungent wet market, and afternoon markets gradually being displaced by the new, squeaky clean super stores.
Walking through the streets in the Old Town we gorged ourselves on local specialties and walked past sumptuous homes of former tin mining barons, saw the influences of the Portuguese, Dutch, Chinese, Indian, Malay and Sea Gypsies to create a truly unique culture more similar to Penang in Malaysian than any other Thai city. It was a feast for the senses and made me see this resort island in a totally different light.

I decided to take this tour as I started my Thailand trip in Phuket and was overwhelmed by the street food options but didn’t know what/how to order like a local. It did not disappoint! The tour guide Pema was incredibly kind, energetic, and funny. She took us to a number of local spots (so local they are not even found on google maps) where we tried countless delicious foods. She also took us to a local market to explain local ingredients found in southern Thai cuisine. We walked through most of old town Phuket, and Pema also taught us about local culture and history, taking us to a Buddhist temple to engage in some local traditions. You can tell that she is incredibly passionate about Thai culture, Thai cuisine, and her community - the tour ran over the scheduled time because she just wanted to feed us more! She was also kind enough to make sure we all got back to our hotels safely in the rain. I highly recommend this tour if you find yourself in Phuket. I also commend A Chef’s Tour for choosing to work with such engaging and passionate local tour guides!

Where to start… has to be with our guide, Pema, who was not only incredibly knowledgeable but was fun, friendly and so good with our very hard to please 10 and 14 year old sons that even they had a great time. She made it feel less like a tour and more like having an old friend show you around their city - khawp khun khrap, Pema! 😊. Now for the food… in addition to walking us through the food market, Pema took us to many out of the way places where we tried so many amazing things that we would have never tried (or even known existed) on our own. The “towering” Malaysian coffee and tea were gustatory and visual standouts! In addition to the fantastic food, we also learned a lot of interesting and unusual facts about the old town and beyond along the way. At the end she sent us off with several goodie bags to enjoy later! This tour was hands down one of the highlights of our first trip to Thailand and we just can't say enough good things about our experience. We plan on doing it again the next time we are in Phuket! Highly recommended for foodies and non-foodies alike.

Must Do! What you experience is not just food, but Thai generosity, Thai emotions, Thai culture and much more. In no way a simple tourist can experience all this unless taken on a well informed and well intended tour. This is not a money making ritual but an attempt to show the real side of Thai cuisine which evolved over time with its mixed culture.
The joints where you will sit and eat and know the idea behind all ingredients and the cooking style is just marvelous. I thank my star to have met a wonderful human - Pema, as my guide. She not only will open your eyes to the Thai food, but of its history and culture. She leaves no effort and is like a mother who ensures that her children are well fed! So many times during the tour I thought to myself, how does she keep up with the enthusiasm and act as if its her first tour, when we know she has done this a thousand times before. The level of commitment is stupendous, her smile - infectious. We were a group of 5 plus a baby, all from various ends of the earth and gosh, did we not enjoy every minute of it.
In simple words - Just Do It!

CAUTION: It is not a 4 hour tour as stated by its promoters. It took us more than 5 hours to wrap it up. (As I said, its not just a business, its the real deal)

Our foodie guide, Pema, was an absolute gem. She has a great sense of humor, a zest for life, and a lot of knowledge about the local area. As we walked from restaurant to restaurant, she stopped at places of interest and historical significance to share details about the area. This allowed us to understand the local culture and was wonderful addition to the tour.

Now, as for the food: there is a TON of food. Yes, it’s delicious but try to only “taste” as you go, otherwise you will overdo it and miss out on great cuisine later because you are full. Pema clearly knows all the best local places, and has a great relationship with the cooks and owners. Many of them came to greet us directly and Pema acted as our translator for questions or compliments. She teaches you how to taste the food, and how the food can be distinguished by region, all based on the ingredients that different cultures bring to the region. She’ll show you great flavor combinations and how to eat certain food like a local, lol.

The tour lasted from 10am to 4pm, and walking was mostly in the shade. Toilets at most stops are modern toilets with tissue provided, so you don’t have to worry. Lots of bottled water is provided, and Pema even carries “baby wipes” if you need it. Book this tour, you’ll be happy — and full!!
