We did this for our ten year wedding anniversary and it was AMAZING! Absolutely worth it and such a beautiful day! Highly recommend it if you want to have fun but still support an ethical elephant experience. Coco Loco and his cousin Cherry picked us up from our hotel around 8:30 in a comfortable air conditioned van and the 1.5hr drive to the farm was beautiful and part of the fun! On the way we stopped at a local market for a bathroom break and were able to buy delicious coffee and snacks.
Like the other reviews said, this is a family operation and the elephants seem to be quite content and well taken care of. This business helps support the local karin family and community who own the elephants without having to use the elephants in logging or other enterprises. The full day is wonderful because you don't feel rushed and also the elephants can do things in their own time. We started by feeding the elephants and then walked through a picturesque rice field to get to the nearby mountain jungle and join the elephants on their daily walk through the forest where they enjoyed scratching themselves on trees and digging up tasty roots to munch on. After that we enjoyed a delicious traditional lunch wrapped in banana leaves and generous servings of fresh fruit-the best pineapple I have ever had.
After lunch you join the elephants at the mud hole and if you choose (we did) you can go in with them and help bathe them in mud. It's dirty obviously (mud) but it's a blast! The elephants come and go as they choose. The younger elephants stayed in longer and seemed to be really enjoying themselves.
After the mud wallowing we all walked down to the river and washed off, helping spray the elephants with water as well. It was a really special day with such majestic creatures. Coco Loco, Cherry, and the mahouts were all very helpful and kind, explaining about the elephants and answering our questions. The landscape and scenery there was also very beautiful!
Considering all the time you can spend with the elephants, the long ride and delicious lunch, as well as all those involved in caring for the elephants and their care, the price is acceptable.
We already recommended this to our friends who went the next week for their honeymoon and also had an amazing time! It is a wonderful experience that will make a memory for a lifetime!

Drop what you’re doing and go on this tour. This was such a wonderful and unique experience. The tour offers personal interaction with the elephants and you’ll get to feed them, walk with them, and then bathe them in the river. This was the highlight of our trip to Thailand. The guide picked us up at the hotel and drove us to the sanctuary, which is about 1.5 hours from the Chiang Mai city center (word of caution: the drive up the mountain was steep and winding but still fun) and then drove us home after the tour. They provided lunch and a rest stop along the way if needed. Everyone was friendly and eager to capture all of the special moments for you. 10/10 would recommend.

This was a fantastic excursion to see the elephants in their natural habitat. Coco was our pick up driver and guide. After about an hour and a half drive out of Chiang Mai, we reached the sanctuary. We all put on Thai vests and got our own bag of bananas to feed the 3 elephants. Had Grandma, pregnant Momma and 9 year old male offspring. After feeding them, there was a hike up the mountain with the elephants. After about an hour of walking there was a great lunch with fruit , fried rice, chicken and stir fried vegetables. Then the elephants went for their mud bath with any human participants that wanted to join them.
After that a river bath to get off the mud.
It was a full 7 hour day with the return ride back to Chiang Mai. Coco was a fabulous guide who also spoke good English. I give this trip 5 stars. Really a great day.

We had the most amazing time, definitely highlight of our entire Thailand visit. The tour operator picked us up at our hotel, spoke good English, and explained what to expect for the day. He answered every question we had. Once arriving at the location, we were very glad that it was a more private experience, rather than loads of people. We learned about the elephant familys history, what they eat, how theyre taken care of, and spent the day with them. We fed them, took them for a walk in the forest, gave them a mud bath, washed them after, and fed them even more. The elephants appear very happy and healthy. Lunch was provided which was very tasty, including wild rice made from the rice fields behind the house. The elephants were so magical, very friendly, and just ate all day.!10/10 experience, thank you.

We had a magical experience during our day there--I brought my husband and three children, who were mesmerized by all the elephants, but especially the baby, who was only 4 weeks old. What felt nice was the staff placing trust in us and the animals to interact without hovering or instructing us relentlessly. After a brief instruction on how to interact with the animals, we were allowed to mostly build a relationship with them at will.

Spending time interacting with the elephants was AMAZING! We got to touch them, feed them, and bathe them. The female elephants were calm and gentle. The young male was more rambunctious, but the owners were very mindful of our safety (they explained his tendencies and watched to make sure he was calm around us). The driver, the guide (Coco), and all the family caring for the elephants were super kind and helpful. They provided a delicious lunch for us, taught us about the elephants, and offered to take pictures of us throughout the day. Coco spoke great English, and talking to him was very enjoyable. We couldn’t have asked for a more wonderful day!

My wife and I visited Thailand in January for our honeymoon and it was one of the highlights of our trip! We both felt so fortunate to have that experience, as well as the opportunity to meet ChanChai and his family. They were all so welcoming and generous, and we learned so much from them in the short amount of time that we were there. It became obvious right away that ChanChai and his family truly have an elephant sanctuary. The elephants are part of their family and they treat them as such. The only reason they run the business is to have enough money to feed and care for the elephants, which is extremely expensive.
Before writing this review I read the past few that have been written. I thought it was worth mentioning that the review left by Emir K could not be further from the truth. I can't imagine they actually visited ChanChai's family, because nobody could come away with those impressions.
The unfortunate reality is that most elephant "sanctuaries" are not that at all. On the drive up to ChanChai's home you see many of these establishments just off the side of the road. You see dozens of tourists surrounding each elephant. You see tourists riding elephants. Then, on the drive home in the afternoon, these same establishments are closed for the day and the elephants are left behind, tied to fence posts. For those establishments, they are simply running a business to profit. At the end of each day, the customers and employees go home, and the elephants stay behind.
ChanChai's family does not run their business to make money. They have just enough visitors to be able to support the elephants and provide them a happy and healthy life. At the end of each day, the very small group of visitors leaves and ChanChai's family stays behind with the elephants, because it is their home.
My hope is that someday ChanChai and his family will be able to support the elephants without having visitors, perhaps through donations. In the meantime, if you have the opportunity to visit their family, it will be an experience that you will never forgot nor find anywhere else!

If you are looking for a truly ethical elephant senctuary, you found it!
Coco (our guide) and his family owns the sanctuary. They allow one tour of 10 people per day to visit the elephants.
We had great fun while feeding the elephants, walking them to the woods and taking together a mudbath. Great experience!

We had an amazing experience with guide Coco and the whole loving family that cares for the elephants. We were picked up in a comfortable air conditioned van which took us 1:45 mins up into the mountains to the elephant camp. We spent the day feeding, interacting, bathing the elephants. There are three (grandma, pregnant mama, and her 9 year old male calf). The elephants are so peaceful ...the little one is playful. We got lots of time to touch observe and feed them. Lunch was delicious served on banana leaves. Everything was so nicely organized, fun and special. Our group had about 10 people but felt like we all had individual time with the elephants. The group came from all over (Japan, Brazil, Netherlands, Belgium and us from the US).

Myself, my boyfriend and two new friends chose this lovely sanctuary to see their elephants. It was such an amazing and personal experience. Chanchai who was our guide for the day is an amazing, kind and funny guy, we took an instant liking to him. His English is top notch. He has so much knowledge about the area and of course, elephants. His family own a farm in the Himalayan range and they have been taking care of elephants for generations. First and foremost, the elephants are not exploited or abused in any way. They really are part of the family to those people. The day was organised around the elephants routine , you get to join them in their daily adventuress. They were not forced to do anything that they didn’t want to. It was amazing to see how the family communicated with the elephants and how much love they had for each other. I would highly recommend this sanctuary, as it actually is one, as opposed to other more popular sanctuaries who don’t seem to care half as much for the well being of elephants as these guys do. Absolutely wonderful people, elephants and experience!

Hi there. What fitness level is required for this trip? And is the bus or car that picks people up at their hotel to the sanctuary air-conditioned ?
Matt
Brooklyn, NY15 contributions
Average fitness level is fine. You will do moderate walking in the forest and then get into the water with the elephants. You definitely have to be mobile because the elephants can be surprisingly quick. The car was air conditioned but don’t expect luxury accommodations. The drive is up a winding mountain road and we had five people in the car. I believe it was a Toyota RAV4 but I can’t say with certainty.

Hi!
I am thinking to come on a solo trip sometime early next year 2020. Apart from the one day tour, I was thinking if there is anywhere I can stay in the elephant sanctuary itself for a few days. I am hoping to be able to experience the life of the locals. caring for the rescued elephants and understanding the culture of the elephants in Thailand. Thank you.
