About
We are part of an ethical and sustainable eco-tourism project. We have talked with the elephant carers (Mahout) and invited them to join our project. Our special project purpose to take the chain and saddle off of the elephants, like some projects of Elephants nature park. They are our inspiration. We aim to provide a better life for the elephants. In all of our program activities visitors can observe the elephants in nature as well as gain an insight into their history and behavior. We are happy to provide them a safe, loving and secure environment for them to roam free in a natural environment.

Unforgettable Experience Would highly recommend!
Mar 2020
Wow wow and Wow! Such a great experience. I would like to thank you all the workers and mahouts. They really made this sanctuary a great place for the elephants to live after being rescued. A safe happy environment for the elephants. I felt great spending time with the elephants. The facilities are great, clean toilets, showers etc. No riding no chains no hooks, it's a genuine elephant sanctuary. Thanks to everyone at the sanctuary you guys are the best!

Amazing!!!!
Mar 2020 • Couples
Me and my boyfriend went with Chiang Mai Elephant Home amongst all of the companies offering this kind of experience and we are SO glad we did!!!
From the moment we got picked up we felt safe and happy. Driver was on time and there was branding on the open back van (note - no air con however not really needed) which was a nice touch! There were 6 including us on the tour which made it very personable and I was super happy about. It made it all feel very 1 on 1 !! We drove a little and stopped at a local market with a supermarket also so people could buy anything they wanted had they maybe not had breakfast - 30 mins here and is a nice option to have! Afterwards we arrived at the Elephant home! We were introduced to Ronnie who took care of us for the day! Ronnie is an amazing guide! Very funny, informative and helpful! We got in our traditional Karen garments and began straight away! Ronnie took us to a shack and we began learning about the elephants and made them a vitamin ball which was a lovely experience! Afterwards we had lots of time with the elephants which was extremely roam free, it was relaxed and Ronnie kept us topped up with sugar cane and bananas for them :)! Afterwards we stopped for food - there were great vegetarian options for my picky self and my partner! Fruits, sticky rice, veggies, a Massaman style curry that was a DREAM! Also - bottled freezing cold water was available whenever you wanted it with no limit!! :) then we relaxed on the hammocks for a while and played a game until the elephants were ready! We then had a go at cutting our own sugar cane which was fun! And tried the fruits hanging from the trees - which tasted amazing to eat just like that! Then we had another feed with the elephants before the mud spa! We had the mud spa and then washed and cooled off in the lake a few steps behind - all with the elephants! You can tell they care for them well here. During all of this a man takes photos for a reasonable price to pay also which is a nice option! We opted not to as we had a go pro! Afterwards we cleaned up, said goodbye to the elephants and left for the local waterfall! The waterfall was stunning! Hardly anyone there and great photo pics! Also had a little cafe! We had a swim and headed home to be dropped off right back at the pick up point!
In the least dramatic way this was one of the best days of my life and a dream to do! This company made my experience amazing and with such ease and so personal! I would 100000% recommend to purchase with them! I think going into the actual tourist centre is cheaper so maybe avoid booking online unless maybe there isn’t availability!
Thank you so so much Ronnie and Chiang Mai Elephant Home!!! You were AMAZING!

Best day!
We were so lucky that no one else had booked a one day tour so it was just me and my partner. Our tour guide was great from start to finish. We had so much time with the elephants, they allow you to take your own photos but as a couple they won’t take photos for you as they had a photographer. Best thing that ever happened as we just enjoyed living in the moment and we ended up with some amazing snaps which we didn’t even realise. They provided lunch and fruit which was lovely and freezing cold water which was needed! We made their food, had a long talk about the elephant animal, showered them and had a mud bath with them as well as feeding and walking with them. Just a perfect day and would definitely recommend.

Such a great experience!! A must for everyone! Great staff! Amazing day!
Jan 2020 • Friends
Today we visited the elephant home and had the best experience imaginable. We started the day getting picked up from our hotel by the staff. They were on time if not early! Very good service!

On arrival, we learnt about the elephants, their history and their feeding habits. All whilst putting some vitamins together, ready to feed them. We then fed these to the elephants along with sugar cane.

After spending some time with these elephants we were treating to a buffet style lunch which tasted great! With meatless options for vegetarians. All washed down with a nice cold beer costing as little as 50 Baht (if I remember correctly).

After lunch we had a little relax time on the hammocks to let our lunch go down. We then moved on to the mud bath along with the elephants. Here we got to dig in the mud and rub it over the elephants. I wasnt sure who enjoyed it more, the elephants or me. We then followed the elephants to the river where we got to wash them down. This was where we had the most fun. The elephants joined in by spraying water too. All over themselves and us!! So fun and very funny! I couldnt stop laughing, it was so enjoyable!

The staff here are the best and you can just tell how much love they have for these animals! If you are planning to travel to Thailand, I suugest this as a place not to miss! So much fun and lovely to spend time with, feed and care for these gorgeous animals!!

Thank you Chiang Mai Elephant Home!!

Doing their best, but not as ethical as first appears.
Nov 2019 • Friends
We were so excited to see the elephants, but reading the itenerary I started to get some doubts.
The elephants were beautiful and feeding them was a treat! However, it started to feel wrong when they had a group of 8 people chucking mud onto their backs during the mud bath sessiob, surely this shouldn't be normal for them. You could feel her quiver as sensitive spots were touched but she stood still at the voice of her mahout. When in the river washing off, it was clear that she didnt want to lie down in the water so the mahout forced her down for our 'entertainment'to wash her. At the end of the bath the elephants re-rolled in the mud themselves as they would in the wild for skin protection, showing this whole display was for our benefit only. There were 4 groups on camp and they have to do this for all of us?? It seemed very forced, unnatural and unfair on the elephants.

On reflection humans should really only observe natural behaviours and help with feeding. If we were lucky to see them bath of their own accord that would have been a bonus instead of them being forced to. I think this type of mindset for tourists would greatly improve the animals welfare.

Lastly, they had a baby elephant on camp, in our view this baby should be brought up with the best chances of being released back into the wild. Instead, the mum was chained up so we can touch and stroke her baby child, the mother nodding with stress as we do so. That mother and baby should NOT be visible to the public, highly unethical to use the baby as a crowd puller.

I ended the day very sad. In hind sight a much more ethical outfit is available in Laos where you can spend the day observing the animals as they would naturally behave, getting close but not touching to allow them the best chance of rehabilitation and a happy free lifestyle.

Thank you so much for taking the time to details your experience and share it with us! A bit of history of the elephants in Thailand, these elephants is domestic animal, The elephant’s role in Thailand began as early as the late 1500s. The Thais took advantage of elephants’ sheer size and strength to fight against the Burmese, Malays, and the Khmer to protect the Kingdom. In addition to playing a part in Thailand’s battles, elephants were put to work across the country for generations. From hauling teak wood to logging the dense jungles in the north, elephants were used in lieu of machinery. Elephants were trained before actually being put to work, and they did not retire until about the age of 60. Sadly, the number of elephants in Thailand has declined since the early 20th century. Since elephants could no longer be used for logging (which was banned in 1989), they were thrust into the tourism world and forced to take tourists trekking through the jungle or perform in front of crowds. And they do not treat them well. At Chiang Mai Elephant Home we have started an ethical and sustainable eco-tourism project. We want to rescue elephants form their hard work or from a life in a bad environment like a circus or riding camp. We don’t want to see elephants which have to dance or being treated badly. We want to present our experience and knowledge for care, love and respect for the elephants. We talk to the Mahout and elephants caretakers in our area and invite them to participate in our project. We offer them a good alternative to feed their families. Our special project purpose to take the chain and saddle off of the elephants, like some projects of Elephants nature park. They are our inspiration. All elephants care takers and owner agree to take a saddle off which is a good sign and good start for the elephant welfare here. No more being ridden and treat them with respect. We try to do all the best we can for the elephants, elephants care takers, elephants owner and community here. Elephants can eat up to 16 hours a day. This is the main activity that our visitors use to help feed and care for the elephants. The elephants have areas around to move freely. Bathing in the river or mud is also a natural and often repeated activity for them, helping them to cool down and protect their skin from the sun and insects. Not all elephants participate in this activity. Our elephant caretakers are always observe their behavior which of one the them want to join and which one would rather just walk around or eat more. We have separate the new born baby and his mom. Like other new born baby that they need time to adjust himself to this world, he needs extra care and his mom very protective that why we have to chain her a bit of time for all safety purpose. Now she is free and no chain any more. Elephant welfare is important to us and it is one of our main goals. With the money that we raise from visitors, we can feed them, provide veterinary care and land for a secure environment. You can ensure that the elephants here have an excellent way of life. With your support, we can provide jobs to hill tribes and local people so they can support their families as well. We love our elephants and take a good care of them. We put a lot of passion in our project and the elephants found a new home with us. It took a lot of time and effort to provide a better life for these elephants. And we appreciate your support and your understanding.

I am so grateful that we selected to do this wonderful activity. It was the most wonderful experience we travel with two Italians and Mr Handyman. We made vitamin ball to feed the elephants, scrubbing them with mud and finally taking a bath with them. It was pouring with rain but that made it even more exciting. If you go to Chiang Mai this is a must do experience!!!

BEST DAY EVER!
We had the most incredible time spending the day here, you get to spend quality time up close with the elephants and several baby elephants. Goi showed us around all day and she was amazing, so much fun and told us so much about the elephants, how they are looked after and where that have come from. Elephants are well looked after and rescued from circus/riding/shows. Worth every penny!

Very surprised!!
Oct 2019 • Couples
I was very sceptical when we booked this tour as we didn’t have a chance to research the elephant home before we booked as we were taken to the tourist office by a Tuk Tuck driver however we were both surprised.
No the elephants are not wild but they are so well looked after compared to the torment they went through before arriving at the elephant home.
Our guide (Goi) was amazing throughout. She went above and beyond to make sure we all had an amazing day. A smile from ear to ear from pick up to drop off! Any questions we had she answered and she answered honestly!
Just to note the elephants are not owned by the home itself more “rented” (used lightly) from their owners to stop them being used in the circus or riding camps
Currently have 5 elephants ranging between 5-30 years old and a 10 week old baby.
Thanks for an amazing day Chiang Mai Elephant Home!
