What to expect
  • Arrange your morning pickup anywhere in Chiang Mai before heading to a market in the city of Mae Wang, approximately 1 hour outside of town. From here, climb aboard your bike and strap on your included helmet to spend the next 2 hours pedaling past historic temples, rice paddy fields, waterfalls and Thai fruit farms. After finishing your cycling trip, stop for lunch at a local Thai restaurant. Once you’re fueled up, continue the hiking portion of your tour, driving first to the trek’s start point in the nearby mountains. Walk through the verdant rainforest to reach a nearby waterfall, where you’ll have the chance to cool off and relax amid this beautiful outdoor site. Continue your trek by proceeding to a village of Karen, one of a number of hill tribes that calls the area home. Explore traditional life in this hill tribe community before exploring the town’s rice paddies. Depending on the time of year, you might even get to help out with planting and harvesting rice. At the end of the privately guided day trip, your driver will drop you off at your preferred point in Chiang Mai.

Amazing experience - out of time
Feb 2020
We spent a wonderful experience during 2 days.
Our guide was amazing, very nice and we learnt so many things thanks to him.
We chosen different activities like cycling, trecking in the country side with the school's visit.
We spent one night in the Spicy Village. Lovely place and lovely people ! Our best experience

Everything was perfect, it was definitely our best time in Thailand !

Outstanding Day in Mae Wang!
Dec 2019
Can't say enough about our day spent with our guide, Sam, in Mae Wang. Our family of 5 (three teens) visited two beautiful Karen villages, met the people, trekked through the jungle, enjoyed lunch by the waterfall and saw some beautiful elephants along the way. Highly recommend Next Step Thailand for a great family day outside Chiang Mai.

Great Tour of Mae Wang
Nov 2019
Next Step Thailand was an absolute pleasure to work with. The planning and booking process could not have been more easy and the two day trek in Mae Wang was really something special - complete with a hike, river rafting, cooking and staying in a hill tribe village Thank you to Samart, Bandito (our guide) and the whole team!

Great day in Doi Inthanon national park!
Jun 2019 • Friends
We had a great day trip to Doi Inthanon organized by Next Step Thailand. From booking all the way through they were extremely responsive, professional and helpful. We were picked up at our hotel by our guide and driven in a private car to and around the park.

Our guide Jackie was great! His English was very good, he was very informative telling us not only about the park, it’s history and what we were seeing but also fielding our questions about Chiang Mai and Thailand in general. He was great in giving us as much time as we wanted at each stop and was very accommodating with meals (two of us were vegetarians). In addition to all our own photos he was taking photos with his phone the whole day which he then shared with us at the end of the trip.

Great diversity of experiences between visiting the twin pagodas, seeing the royal agricultural project station, hiking through the forest and going to a coffee shop in a small Hmong village. Note that one of the requirements of hiking in the park is being accompanied by a local guide when going on the trails.

We were there during the low tourist season. Combine that with being on this private tour and it felt like we had the entire national park to ourselves. Thank you Jackie and Next Step Thailand for a wonderful day!

Amazing 3 day trip! Our favourite part of our trip to Thailand!
Feb 2019 • Friends
A very well set up 3 day trip with a healthy mixture of exercise with cycling and trekking, cooking and eating absolutely delicious food, and a little bit of relaxing to take in all the beautiful views. It really feels like we didn't waste a moment. Our tour guide Sam was extremely knowledgeable on all things jungle, and his family made us feel incredibly at home during our homestay. Not to mention he is an incredible cook! We also really enjoyed our stay at Spicy villa. We really felt like we escaped the city and were in the countryside. We would like to thank Samart for all your speedy emails leading up to our trip. We will hopefully return again :)

Amazing one day trip to Doi Inthanon
Jun 2018 • Couples
Next Step was so helpful in planning and executing our one day trekking trip to Doi Inthanon. They worked with us to ensure that we had the exact itinerary that we wanted, and then Sam was an exceptional guide the day of.

Seeing the waterfalls and then trekking through the jungle was great. Sam was versed in all the local knowledge to help us understand our surroundings. We stopped at market on the way to pick up lunch, and eating that delicious (and plentiful) food out of banana leaves while sitting in a thatched hut as the jungle rain fell around us was incredible.

Thanks to everyone at Next Step for the fantastic day! They are worth every penny

The most AMAZING day...you MUST do this
My family including 4 children aged 10-20yrs enjoyed the most fantastic trip yesterday with guide Kwan. We had a private trip for the 6 of us which included cycling through the countryside, jungle trek to a beautiful waterfall where we were treated to a very scrumptious lunch & warm hospitality by the Karin Tribe. We then headed to feed & bath the elephants (unimaginable fun) & finished our day with bamboo rafting(this was a bit long & boring, maybe skip the rafting). We finished the day exhausted but with soo many amazing memories, don't leave Chiang Mai without doing a trip with Next Step. If you don't know what you want to do they will happily customize a tour for you depending on your likes etc. Thankyou Samart for organising our trip to our likes etc & an absolute THANKYOU to Kwan for making our day UNFORGETTABLE.

2 day elephant tour- AMAZING!
Nov 2018 • Couples
This was the highlight of our trip. We did a 2 day, one night elephant tour and the experience was like nothing else and was unforgettable. We got a main tour guide and a driver and they were essentially our private guides and driver and they were exceptional. Made us feel very welcome and taught us so much. Same our guide is a great cook and cooked several meals for us. We cycled in Chiang Mai, did bamboo rafting and river tubing, met the elephants, lived in a bungalow in the Spicy Villa, met tons of awesome people, trekked 2 hours in the raw jungle to a waterfall and hiked back through the rice fields. The people we met and native scenery we got to experience was incredible. We visited the Karen village and were humbled by their community and local schools. Thank you to our guide Sam and driver Nquay!

3 day lanna adventure so great!
Apr 2018 • Family
Family of four, kids aged 8 and 11.
Private 3 day Lanna Adventure tour + elephant add-on.

This was one of the major highlights of our Thailand trip! We LOVED staying in the Karen village. It's rustic, for sure, but if you're good with camping it's quite comfortable. We had our own raised bungalow, with sleeping mats on the floor covered with mosquito nets. Oddly these were more comfortable than most of the beds we encountered in Thailand. The toilet was in a separate building adjacent. There was also a shower, but we didn't try it out as we found the local swimming hole.

The kids were thrilled by the large number of dogs and puppies under the house, the pigs just outside, cows and water buffalo in the pasture, and brand new chicks everywhere. So awesome seeing the village through the kids eyes. They thought this was the best place we stayed the entire trip, mostly because of the animals and being able to just roam free in the village. They couldn't care less about where we're sleeping, etc.

School is out in March and April, so we didn't get to do the school visit, but we did stop in at the kindergarten briefly, which was loads of fun for the kids.

The other highlight was our time with the elephant. We had one elephant, and the kids fed her hundreds of bananas! We then went swimming with her to clean her off... after which she promptly covered herself back up with mud! We had looked at a number of different options for interacting with elephants, but at the end of the day this was perfect. I can't imagine what you would do on one of the full day elephant tours... the 30 - 40 minutes we spent was more than enough time, especially since we had the place to ourselves.

Oh and third best was the bamboo rafting. This wasn't quite the backwoods rustic experience I expected from other reviews, but was a blast nonetheless. The bamboo rafting seems to be a major industry on the river we went to. Their are a number of businesses set up around ferrying rafts up and downstream. And there are a number of restaurants set up along the river on the way down. When we first went past this area on a Sunday it was crazy full of people, mostly locals, but when we actually did the rafting on Tuesday it was much less crowded.

The cycling was fun, but not the most picturesque part of the trip. The bikes aren't in great shape, especially the kids bikes that needed to be rented from elsewhere, but they were totally fine for the type of riding and length of time. Most of the riding was in full sun though, so pretty hot this time of year.

The trekking was awesome for the adults, but a little much for the kids. We did about 4 hours total on day 2, from the village to a waterfall and then out to the road. The kids did great, but were pretty exhausted from the heat afterwards, which showed up when we started hiking again the next day. We only did about 90 minutes on day 3, but the kids were so tired from the previous 2 days that this was a bit of a push. The heat is definitely a factor here so I think it would have been easier at a cooler time of year. And the trekking can totally be tailored in length, we (and the guides) just thought that we would be fine.

We stayed at Spicy Villas the second night. It's a cool little set-up, but we honestly preferred the village, can't really explain why. The beds were basically springs covered in fabric - no padding at all - although we were so tired it didn't really matter. The views from there were pretty impressive though.

The food on the entire trip was fantastic, and the cooking lessons really interesting. Food safety is a bit questionable, but nobody got sick and really what you're experiencing is the way the locals do things - definitely different than home.

Our guides were excellent and made the trip really interesting. We had Ping, whose English is great and has loads of stories. Superman, who looks to be about 70 (but probably isn't), and could kick everyone's butts trekking and with his slingshot. He's a quiet guy, but so very impressive. And Oh, our driver, who navigated some pretty crazy roads.

Things to note:
- water isn't included, and you'll need a lot! There are ample opportunities to buy more, but make sure you take advantage of them and get lots each time. With the heat and activity, you need more than you think!
- bring toilet paper for the village stay.
- even in March, the hottest time of the year, we put on our sweaters in the evening. We could have made due without them - we weren't freezing - but it did cool down significantly.
- we hiked in our Keen sandals which were totally sufficient. No need for boots.
- we didn't see a lot of bugs, but something was definitely biting, so bring bug spray.
- this is not a luxury tour. The conditions are pretty rustic, and for some might be out of your comfort zone. But if you're looking for a way to see how the locals live and have a bit of an adventure, and can set your expectations accordingly, this is a fantastic trip!

Don't miss out on the homestay!!! Incredible experience!
Feb 2018 • Friends
Next Step Thailand gave us an unforgettable experience on our trip. We did the 3 day adventure with them and every day was filled with fun. Do not pass up on the homestay that they offer as this was a truly unique experience. We were shown around by Ping and guided on our hikes by Superman. The hospitality was first class, the food was amazing, and having a personal experience with an amazing family was second to none. We also did the cycling, bamboo rafting, hiking, waterfalls, temples and visited some of the tribal people. We could not have asked for a better experience and I would do it all again if I ever get the opportunity!
