My husband and I really enjoyed this day trip but I would say that this is more of an advanced beginner track. You share the road with trucks, motorcycles and other bikers quite frequently and the path, while very wide, is poorly maintained in some areas. I wouldn’t have been comfortable doing this track if it was my first time downhill biking. That being said - we loved it and would recommend it!

Because we wanted to try downhill biking, we chose the beginners tour, which turned out to be perfect for us. Not too scary, not boring and the guide definitely knew his way through the mountain.
We were picked up at our hotel at 9:20. Along with everyone else you then go to the office and get your safety instructions and your equipment (which is totally sufficient btw, I read another review that criticized this part). The bikes are already mounted on top of the buses, so there is no chance to check them or to be fitted beforehand.
Then everyone spreads out onto the buses for the different tours. Turns out that my girlfriend and I are the only two doing the beginners tour that day, which is really nice.

The trail itself is great and fun. Nothing else to say here :-)
You enjoy the view, some fruits right from the tree (delicious!) and the local coffee during a few stops. There are plenty of opportunities to take pictures.

Unfortunately, our guide was not really able to talk to us since he just knew very few words of English (mainly the commands and bike related words for doing the tour). Smalltalk and additional info about the countryside was impossible to get. He was very nice and helpful though. Also, we noticed that other guides were able to speak better English so don't take this as a common factor.
For beginners, the instructions "how to move/behave on a downhill bike" were also pretty brief and lacked a few things (e.g. put the pedals parralel to the ground on tough territory, move your body more to the rear of the bike when riding steeper downhill trails) - probably due to the language barrier as well.

I am a newbie to downhill bikes, but I know my way around with bikes a little bit. That being said, I think the type of bikes being used are high standard. Unfortunately, the bikes we had were a little worn off...
The bike of my girlfriend was missing the numbers, showing what gear she was in on the right hand side (which is essential to have, esp. for beginners. Also her back tire/wheel wasn't straight anymore.
The hydraulic break on my bike needed fixing twice during the 2 hour ride (again, crucial) and the front fork suspension needed some oil to work smoothly. The pedals were worn off on both bikes.

So overall, the bikes could definitely need an update/some fixing. On the other hand, you don't really need the best bikes in the world to ride a beginners trail (besides the crucial parts mentioned above - that shouldn't happen).

That being said, we still had lots of fun and kind of wanted to go right back up to do it all over again :-)

The tour finishes at a scenic lake where you get to enjoy a really delicious thai meal in a hut right at the water. Perfect conclusion of a fun bike tour.

Dear Reviewer Thank you for taking your time , we are happy you enjoyed your trip. We took care of the rear wheel (broken spoke) . On long downhills like our DH trips , the oil in the breaks tend to overheat and need cooling off during the ride. See you again. It was good to have you Regards Aidan

Me and my friend (two out of shape dudes in our thirties) did the beginner downhill course and it was perfect. Hard at times bit fun all the time. Short enough, was dead at the end. Shout out to Pom, great guy and great guide!

We booked route #1 (the 'Eagles route') which is advertised as being suitable for beginners. I was somewhat surprised when in the briefing the manager asked if we had done mountain biking before ( we had) and described it as 'quite difficult'. It did not seem suitable for beginners given how steep and rocky it was. The large covering of very dry leaves over hard ground made matters a lot worse. Even when applying the brakes it just carried on skidding down.Several of our group fell off, 1 with quite a serious injury. One lady just go off her bike and walked it down. Even the group doing the more advanced trails described the dry leaves as a big problem and quite dangerous. I guess it depends on the time of the year but i ended up feeling misled about what i had booked. Not exactly fun....I ended up cuts and bruises which impacted the quality of the rest of my holiday. Also, the guide's English was not the best. I had hoped to learn a lot more about the plants in the jungle or the Hmong people for example.Oh well....

Dear Reviewer Thank you for your feedback regarding your bike trip. Indeed adverse conditions such as rain or fallen leaves can make a mountain bike trip a lot more challenging. then one would expect. I commend you for your courage completing the course into the valley as rescue vehicles are at our disposal if it is necessary . In general having spend many years in the mountains biking, I always tell myself , "I am in the mountains and I happen to have a bike with me" Preferably I can ride the whole trail but its cool to walk too. We are never in a hurry and we group our riders by ability . It all comes together at the morning briefing at our base camp in Chiang mai where we confirm conditions and your trip with you together. With a wide verity of trails to choose from we ususally are able to place you on the right trip. Thank you for joining us on our daily adventures in the mountains and on the rivers. Happy Trails Aidan

Jan 2018 • Friends
We were a mixed ability group of riders (1*advanced, 1*intermediate, 2*beginners) who signed up for the beginner / intermediate downhill trip 3. Unfortunately, it had been raining the days before, so the guides informed us that they were changing the routes and warned us of the dangers. By the end, the guides told me that they ended up taking us down route 3a (intermediate) after scaring some of our group and taking half of us down 6x (advanced).

What worked well:
+I had a great day mountain biking. My friends eventually enjoyed themselves after the initial scare.
+The guides mixed up their style of leading to suit the terrain.
+The website is very informative with maps, photos and details comparing each route.
+The initial briefing had great Google Earth visuals and a solid pinch of good humour.
+When I realised the company also does kayaking (grades 1 - 5), I checked out the storage shed and was impressed with their whitewater kayaks.

Even better if:
-The bike helmets need replacing. It took me 5-10 minutes to find a helmet that was not cracked and fitted OK. I don't know if the cracked helmets ended up being used.
-Kayakers should also have well maintained specialist whitewater safety equipment (helmets and buoyancy aids) for whitewater grades 2+. The photos in the shop showed customers kayaking in whitewater with bike helmets!
+The bikes need to be better maintained to suit their intended use. I was riding a hardtail Trek mountain bike down steep, rooty and rutted off-camber switchbacks, but it felt that I was about to go over the bars (handlebar stem was the wrong length) while the bike was rattling and I couldn't access half my gears or the lowest gears kept coming off the rings and jamming (need to index the rear derailleur).
+Guides need to do their job of guiding / leading, rather than going out for a ride with their friends. At one point, half our group got separated by traffic, redirected by a policeman in a busy village and missed a turn. The tail guide then shouted abuse at us in English(!) until we turned around to follow him and return to the group. It's shameful for him because he lost control of his own temper and failed to lead us through a busy village.

Dec 2018 • Family
My family of four went on one of the Doi Suthep mountain bike trips (beginner level) in December 2018. We enjoyed the day, due to the great guides and interesting terrain and fun trails.

A few caveats: keep receipts (we paid cash in full in advance, but when the day arrived they didn't seem to have a record of that). Also, carefully check the bike you get to ride (my wife's bike had a rear derailleur that wasn't functioning properly and the bike my son used had brake issues that needed tending twice on the trail). And lunch was so-so.

Recommended for the great riding, helpful guides and scenery.

Dear Reviewers Yes we cant agree more with the reviewer keep any vouchas (receipts) that you receive from street agents when paying cash. The booking was obviously in our system but we like the voucha so we can collect . If you loose your voucha or forget it , its not the end of the world we simply contact the agent (which we did in this case) and get a copy of the voucha faxed . Remember you can easily book your trips right here on Trip Advisor and we will have an electronic voucha upfront. The test ride at the starting point is a good time to share any mechanical issues with your guide, some minor issues such as derailleur and break adjustments, chain issues are to be expected on a mountain bike ride. Your guides are standing by as excellent mechanics. Have fun Aidan

Our family is active but had never mountain biked before. We chose the Eagle route (1) for “motivated beginners.” We paid 1500 baht, plus 250 to enter the park. Got picked up at our guest house at 9:20 in a songthew and taken to the outfitter to get an overview and equipment, then taken 35 minutes up the mountain. Began biking at 12 as a group of six, guided by Jay in front with another guide in the back. The more advanced route 3 and ours began together and intersected after the first segment at a hilltop snack bar, at which point four group 3 folks dropped back to our group 1, and we got an third guide. Then a bit further on, group 1 was able to split again, choosing either the flatter road or the steeper one. Six of us and two guides chose the steeper, which gave us a thrill (and a wipe out). My 12-year old led the pack. Our bikes were high-quality and well-maintained, super light. We finished biking after 2h45 mins, and enjoyed a meal of curry chicken, egg, and rice in a series of charming huts jutting into the lake in Mae Rim. We were dropped back at our hotel by 4pm. The scenery was great, but we didn’t stop for many photo shoots. Our guide spoke great English and was attentive and helpful.
