Adored by many and adorned throughout the country, be it at homes or temples, the floral art industry in Thailand has gained immense popularity on the use of flowers, leaves and plants to make the most stunning examples in the world. Thailand’s ideal climate and its affection for everything related to the characteristics of its flowers continue to stun admirers from across the globe, eager to know the secrets of its form of art. With the opening of the Museum of Floral Culture, dedicated to this art form that dates back centuries, guests are now given the opportunity to learn the finer art of garland making, ornamental flower decorations and more than is so interwoven in the country’s cultural values.
You will be picked up by your English speaking guide and driver for a short transfer to the Museum of Floral Culture, situated in one of Bangkok’s older quarters nearby the Chao Phraya River. You are welcomed by the team of floral experts who guide you through their little sanctuary, dedicated to preserving and passing on the art of floral design to fellow enthusiasts. The museum is housed in a century-old, teak wooden mansion that breathes the colonial air of its original owners. A short introduction of the house before entering the workshop of one of Thailand’s most sought-after floral designers is definitely adding to the experience. During the workshop, visitors will learn about the most commonly-used flowers, their attributes and how these can be best applied into garlands or ornaments. All this is brought with a hands-on lesson in floral decoration and in line with Thai cultural values. Your workshop leader for your 45-minute flower session also will explain the various Thai ceremonies and what piece suits such event best. The tour includes a short tea break with a selection of Asian desserts.
Throughout this half day, you can also admire previously made floral arrangements and other Thai cultural aspects as exhibits throughout the mansion. You will be stimulated to add your own personal touches to your arrangement as one can admire a blend of traditional and contemporary forms of floral art on display. At the end of your session, you will master the basics in designing your own piece and bring these new learned techniques with you home. The workshop takes approximately 45 minutes and after thanking your teacher for the day, a transfer back to your accommodation in Bangkok, signals the end of your artistic half day out and about.
