About
Day trip to Nuwakot is the best for historical and cultural point of view. About 80 km north of Kathmandu lays a remarkable historical hill town called Nuwakot bearing a special importance in the history of Nepal. It was once on a major trade route to Tibet, it has since become one of the most thriving commercial hubs of Nepal, and was by many regarded as the Western gateway to the Kathmandu valley.
King Prithvi Narayan Shah, the founder of modern Nepal, planned and launched several unification campaigns from here some 260 years ago. A pagoda style building popularly known as seven-story Nuwakot Palace stands as a landmark of Nuwakot. With strategic hilltop viewpoint, it is rarely frequented yet pristine historical hill town offering the opportunity for learning history and culture.

Itinerary
- 1pon meeting at the departure point or the hotel you stay in Kathmandu, drive to Nuwakot which, offers the breathtaking views of the northern Himalayan ranges including Manaslu to Langtang Range. It will take around 2.5 hrs to arrive Nuwakot. It was once on a major trade route to Tibet, one of the most thriving commercial hubs of Nepal, and regarded as the Western gateway to the Kathmandu valley.Seven Story Palace in Nuwakot is the center of attraction for the visitors. It was built in 1762 AD on the name of ''DurgaRatna". However, it has eventually been renamed and become famous as the Seven Story Palace after fallen of two story in the earthquake of 1934. Strategically placed and impressively built, this palace is of extreme historical importance and is still regarded as a model of architecture. With 5 feet thick walls and towering seven stories above the streets, the palace was built to withstand the strongest of forces. A testimony to its historical significance is that it was in this Palace that King Rana Bahadur Shah welcomed the British representative, Mr. William Kirkpatrick, in 1793, just after the war between Nepal and China. In addition, here, in 1816 AD, King Gribanyoddha received a letter of credential from Mr. E. Gardner, the first representative of the UK to visit Nepal. The massive quake of 2015 badly hit the palace square locals have initiated campaigns to restore the historic and cultural significance of this landmark. Rangamahal (The Palace of Malla King) and Bhairabi temple are the other attractions. Situated just east of the Seven Story Palace, Rangamahal is made of beautiful oily bricks with fine wooden carvings. Since Nuwakot was jointly ruled by the Malla kings of the Kathmandu valley, Rangamahal was built for the purpose of a recreation spot for the three kings of the valley. Four story palace is known as Garadghar. It is situated facing the Seven Story palace and is believed that the King Prithvi Narayan Shah built it in 1762 as a Tilingaghar(Store of weapons). Featuring a unique Nepalese architect of Pagoda style, it stands majestically in the town and remains at the center of attraction for the visitors. You can spend enough time in Nuwakaot. You also have an opportunity of doing the village walk until the Malika hill 1450 m, which offers the wide view of the land terraces along with the distant mountains. You will return to Kathmandu having Nepali typical lunch in Famous Parvati's Homestay.

- Hungrytravelingbear0 contributionsLife changing experience with amazing guides and meticulous planningI took part in a 10 day custom package with a group of 9 people heading to the Mardi Himal trek from KTM. It was absolutely incredible from beginning to end. We made friends with the friendliest of guides. We were totally impressed by and forever grateful for the porters who helped us make it up. The selection of hotels, tea houses, and transportation options were the best possible available. The guides were supportive of everyone's questions/concerns and did anything they could to help with even the smallest of requests. Thank you so much for a life changing experience!Written November 15, 2022
- ajelles0 contributionsTrustworthy, flexible and kindhearted!Had a beautiful trek with Adarsha to Mardi Himal BC and a lovely stay in the home of Deepak. Everything was well prepared by Deepak and he was very welcoming, flexible and trustworthy. The stay at his house was really a great bonus, a home away from home. The guide, Adarsha, was very caring, open and great company. He really made the trek an adventure and took great care of me and my safety. All in all no critical remarks and only good things, I highly recommend these guys and the company. Adarsha and Deepak, thank you again!Written March 7, 2022
- dr-jth0 contributionsGreat view, NOT a day tourThis is an interesting place to visit. The architecture is very interesting, and they were doing a lot of restoration. Still, it is a very poor village. The people are friendly. The Newari food is great. I would not take this as either a half-day or full-day tour. Take a taxi up, have the driver wait for 30-45 minutes, while you look around (or longer, if you want to eat in a restaurant), then get on to other things. The tours are over-priced and drag on too long.Written September 9, 2019
- Allen H0 contributionsHighly Recommended, Very ReliableFor the third time in three years, I took a 4WD tour of Upper Mustang with Adventure Thirdpole Treks. This tour was to attend the Tiji Festival in Lo Manthang. Based upon my previous experiences, I had recommended that my well traveled friend accompany me. I was confident that he would be satisfied with Adventure Thirdpole Treks services and most importantly - performance. My confidence and trust were once again rewarded as well as justified. As happens in tours to the isolated and under-developed region of Upper Mustang, challenges beyond anyone's control happen. Our guide, Raj, kept us informed at all times of issues. We were informed of possible solutions and were involved in making the final decision on how to adapt to the changing condition. Raj had everything under control so we never felt any anxiety. In the end the challenges only added to our adventure and in no way took away from our enjoyment of the tour. Raj took very good care of shepherding us through airports, checkpoints, and other confusing situations. Although this was my third tour, Adventure Thirdpole Treks was still able to make this a unique experience for me. We visited some new places and stayed at a couple different guesthouses.Written June 30, 2019
- aaronlhs0 contributionsA worry-free adventurous holiday.Everything from start to end was well planned by our guide Raj and the company. The trek was enjoyable with many laughters and fun along the way. Although due to bad weather we didn't make it to our intended destination (EBC) The company quickly changed our route to ABC which impressed me alot. They made all nessecary changes all within 1 hour which was great! It could have ended in a bad trip but due to their experience they turned it around and still gave us the adventure that we seek. 10/10 service and care. Great job thirdpole and Raj!Written May 5, 2019
- hazelemmanuella0 contributionsBest hospitality and reliability23 March-7 April 4 of us were supposed to climb Everest base camp but due to the bad haze on the day we were supposed to fly to Lukla, our guide Raj told us to make an impromptu decision to climb ABC instead. Of course, we were slightly disappointed but we were prepared for such changes. And we’re thankful we did. We’ve heard so many bad stories of people who force their way there and get injured or have difficulties coming back out to Kathmandu after their hike due to the weather. During our hike, we were very well taken care of. Our porters and guide ensured all our meals were well, held our hands to make sure we got over safely especially on the snowy grounds. What I enjoyed most was that our guide allowed us to stay in their homes, and hosted us just like we were part of his family. He cooked for us fish curry, and his wife cooked mutton. It was a great experience and i’d definitely introduce my friends to this group in future! Make sure your guides are experienced. That’s most important. Safety is always first and I’m thankful Adventure Thirdpole did a wonderful job in that for us. We miss you papa Raj! - Hazel, SingaporeWritten May 5, 2019

- Bianca L0 contributionsWonderful experienceWe had a day trip booked in pokhara to explore the city, raj (our guide) was fantastic and kind, he took us out for a lovely local dinner a few nights before our day trip to introduce himself, we met him again in pokhara for our tour, his English was fantastic and he was very knowledgeable. We had some issues with a different tour company and raj went above and beyond to help us rearrange our trip and find an alternative. He was a genuine, lovely person and on our next visit we will need to look no further than third poll trek.Written March 18, 2019
- Aleks L0 contributionsWonderful Experience with great peopleWe had a wonderful time with Raj! He made our time and tour in Pokhara excellent. He even met with us and hosted us to dinner in Kathmandu. He went above and beyond what we would have expected. I would highly recommend using them for any tour, even if not listed, ask and I'm sure they can make it happen.Written March 18, 2019
- MA10020160 contributionsWow what a view!Though I did an Everest Mountain Flight the view of the Himalayas rising above the clouds from Chandragiri at approx. altitude 2500m was outstanding. You could clearly view Mt. Everest and beyond. Please note that there are steps you can take up or down therefore you have the choice to buy a cable car return, one way or no ticket. Return ticket cost approx. US$93 for 3 adults and 2 children (13 yr old was classified as an adult).Written December 30, 2018
- wrightjimm60 contributionsTrip to Nepal to visit daughter in Sindhupalchok District (Raithane)We spent several days in Kathmandu and travels to the east and north. Deepak arranged jeep for travel from Kathmandu to Bhaktapur and Dhulikhel, and then from Dhulikhel to Melamchi. Excellent drivers and so nice to have transportation taken care of. From Melamchi we went to Raithane and Deepak had a jeep ready for our return trip to Kathmandu which was seamless. Excellent planning and all around great experience. Deepak is a wealth of information both locally ("raithane!") and beyond and a very kind and welcoming soul!Written November 21, 2018
- Chungmaihn0 contributionsAwesome experience! Mountains, Culture and the People!I have been in a couple of places in the world but Nepal is no like others. It's a country where nature shows it greatest masterpiece: mountains. But not only mountains, during our trek, my girlfriend and I also learnt a lot about the culture and the people of Nepal. For me, it's a life-time experience. It couldn't happen without the accompany of Mr. Raj and Bimol from Adventure Thirdpole Treks. Those who have showed us the beauty of Nepal through their hospitality, warmth, and great stories. The service is just excellent. And what we brought back home was not just experience but also two new Nepalese friends. We're gonna come back in Nepal as soon as we can. Chung Mai from Vietnam.Written November 8, 2018
- Global204055719090 contributionsPhotographing Nepal’s Hidden JewelsI must thank Adventure Third Pole Trak for organizing such a wonderful trip for me to photograph Nepal’s hidden jewels towards the unbeaten path away from the norm and into the hidden. And to top it off the experience of having to feel and touch the true Nepalese traditions in a homestay has firmly brought my feet to the ground. Travel is not only to see touristic places, a true traveler needs to explore deeper, to hear the silent flutters of humanity that a country offers, and that said, Third Pole Trak has successfully made it happen. Many thanks to Third Pole Trak for an experience that goes beyond the norm, and I fully recommend any traveler to engage them for their travel needs, be it in a bustling city or the hidden gem of a traditional village that makes you want to get away from your city life more and more.Written November 8, 2018
- nuramalinab10 contributionsSoul searching Lantang - Gosainkunda Pass TrekWhere do I even begin about Thirdpole? Have you ever felt at home when you're not exactly at home? At peace at thee most unexpected place. Well, Thirdpole brought us there. LANTANG TREK AND GOSAINKUNDA PASS Langtang offered a more unpopulated and cultural significance. We were so glad that we picked this trek. After having pass the jungle part of it all, the mountain and valleys were breath-taking. The trek is definitely not as easy and the internet says, but manageable. Hence having a good team of porters and guide is very important. The view up in Kyanjin-Ri was just no less than perfect. The steep incline up from Kyanjin-Gompa is definitely worth it. During our trek we managed to do a little cultural tour to a traditional nepali house. It was definitely the highlight of my trip. The hospitality and love from these people were just so heartwarming. We got to try yak milk and boiled potatoes with masala dip, they tasted so good. Langtang is definitely underrated and a must on the Nepal’s trek list. The Gosainkunda pass was an enlightening one. The hard pass was so beautiful. The endless picturesque lakes within the pass and the challenge of it all just took our breath away. Literally might I add. Haha. The views of the pass definitely has jaw dropping sights throughout which is why this pass is highly recommended. THIRDPOLE STAFF Adarsha Mahat Adars is an exceptional individual, both as a guide and a friend. We couldn’t have ended up with a better guide. His knowledge on Nepal’s mountain ranges, Nepal’s geographical facts and cultural history are impeccable. In between walks he would generously share his knowledge on whichever location we were at, and they were often! Adars’s mantra for trekking was simple, ‘Don’t think about the whole trek, just take it day by day’. Hence this made us worry less, making us enjoy the trek a whole lot more. Words could never justify the bond we made with adars, it was just so pure, fun and understanding. To top it off, he was still amazingly the responsible, diligent and professional guide he is. Tara Bahadur Tamang and Ram Bahadur Tamang Tara’s character oozes out the fun fatherly figure. It was never a bore with Tara walking behind you. Despite his limited English linguistic abilities, communication was a breeze with him. His encouragement and keen eye for your safety are admirable qualities. He often lulls the traditional nepali folk song while trek with such heavy load on him, astonishing. Ram is no stranger to us as this was our second trek with him. Ram’s playful character uplifted our spirits mid treks. He was also very accommodating and helpful to our needs.Written October 28, 2018
