About the operator
Don’t take it from us – here’s what people have to say about this operator:
- patrick2020200 contributionsI cannot recommend this company enoughI had an amazing time with Darius on this trip. Before the journey, communication about pick-up and tour details was very easy and fast. His car is comfortable and all meals on the trip are according to your desires (no fixed schedules with fixed restaurants such as most other agencies). The trekking was awesome and a must-see in Rwanda. The canopy was incredible as well. I had even the chance to see a viper. We had a small puncture on our way back out of the forest after the chimpanzee trekking (Well, it can happen on dirt roads in the forest of Rwanda). Darius organised alternative transport for me to the canopy and even food at this place, while he got the car fixed. He picked me up after the canopy with his fixed car. So all activities could take place. I have never a had a tour guide with such willingness and enthusiasm before It felt more like a trip with a close friend as with a tour guide. We had such a great time together. He offers plenty of other trips and will adjust them to your desires (just google his company). When traveling Rwanda next time - I will only choose his company (and I had trips with 3 different companies this time).Written December 26, 2024

- MadanGopalM0 contributionsMagnificent. This small town is located on the banks of magnificent Lake Kivu, one of the greatest lakes in Albertine Rift Valley and one of the deepest and voluminous Lakes in the world. The stretches of sandy beach, Democratic Republic of Congo on the other side, this is a place of expatriates and wealthy people to settle down. We took a taxi on hire from Kigali to reach this place and took a two hour boat ride to explore the Lake. A must visit to enjoy the beauty and hospitality of the people of Rwanda.Written October 4, 2024

- 469pippap0 contributionsA friendly insightful tourWe had a great tour with Darius, seeing the local Kigali Market and genesis museum were real highlights. Darius was super friendly and made us feel very welcome on our first day in Rwanda. He is a very interesting man with lots of stories! Our only feedback would be that it would have been useful to know what is expected regarding tipping when at some of the memorial museums as we presumed these people were paid but if they weren't then we would obviously have offered a tip. (But our fault for not asking this question beforehand). Highly recommend this trip for a great insight to Kigali and Rwandan culture.Written May 6, 2024

- folukeo7430 contributionsA memorable city tourI got to do a city tour on my layover at Kigali. Though the rain hindered us from seeing some places. Also it was the 30th anniversary of the genocide so could not get to enter the memorial site. My tour guide however made my tour a memorable and ensured I saw other important places in the city of Kigali. He is well knowledgeable and explains the history behind every place we visited. We rounded up at the kimironko market. I will come again and have a full tour.Written April 12, 2024

I did a tour from Kigali to Nyungwe National Park in Rwanda with Usalama Tours, which I chose after reading some nice comments and reviews from previous customers. It was a great decision, as the tour was great and everything went smoothly. All details were arranged by whatsapp messages and e-mail, which they were always very quick to respond. They sent me all the information and the payment details with very clear instructions and I paid in an MTN office in Kigali as instructed.
On the arranged day Darius showed up at our hotel on time to pick us up and take us to the National Park. Darius is very nice and we had interesting and funny conversations during our long ride to the Park. He also made sure the ride goes according to plan and he also tried to accomodate all our requests. The tour of the National Park, especially the canopy walk are really worthwhile.
I truly recommend you use Usalama Tours on your next trip to Rwanda!

This was a great family day trip from Kigali...Our tour operator and driver Darius was a great driver, host and was on time for picking us up in the morning. We would recommend this trip for any family that just wants to do a day trip and have kids traveling in the group. The trek to get to the mountain is a bit long, but my 9 and 15 year old found ways to kill the time in the vehicle. The vehicle was comfortable and Darius was very accommodating. I would highly recommend this trip. Thank you for the great Rwanda hospitality Darius.

Serious safety incident
The canopy walk itself was beautiful, I happened to have perfect weather and got to see lots of monkeys which was really cool. However I have given this trip a poor rating because the tour guide who from my understanding is the operator of the company made me feel incredibly uncomfortable. On the drive there and back he asked many wild and inappropriate questions regarding western culture in the bedroom and my opinions of it. He did a lot of hinting and insinuating that made me feel very unsafe. As well kept touching my leg. Also from his stories I have gathered that I was not the first solo girl he asked many questions about their personal relationships. He also ignored many of my attempts to shut the conversation down. I absolutely would not recommend for other female solo travellers. The tour would probably be fine for groups, couples or men.

Hahahaha,
Yourself knows that you are not telling the truth, and it seems like everything you are saying here is based on the extra money you paid as per the trip report our guide submitted at the office.
Dear Lauren, our guide says that on your way to the forest, you stopped at the clinic where you were supposed to stop for making a Covid-19 test and when the doctor asked you to pay 5000 Rwf, you turned back to the guide and asked whether the money was not included into the package, and he said no ( and this is true because the previous chat with you shows that this was communicated before as some details and requirements to make this particular trip), so don’t try to confuse people.
Our office was happy to serve you, and thank you for traveling with us, otherwise, it’s quite normal that some people go on vacation with a limited budget and once they reach the ground face some changes in times of prices, weather, road-closed, public holidays, etc, which may affect any planned activities, but communication is very key and yourself knows!
Remember, you booked this trip in February and we clearly informed you about price increments/changes (this was 2 months before the trip started), you agreed to add on the additional amount (checking on our previous chat, you were not happy with this change since February).
Our guide says that you landed in Rwanda from Morocco as per your conversation, you told him that there are so many things you didn’t like in that country that includes culture/religion and security, so what he was asking you was the comparison between your country and that one you didn’t like. Why are you confusing people?
Our advice is that you can do a self-evaluation, especially on communication, whenever you book a tour and find that it requires a price that is beyond your budget, always think about two things: cancel it, bargain, or negotiate, because on our side, we are flexible enough to offer any help, otherwise, you wouldn’t be the first person/group we support while on vacation (just communicate, there is no problem).
Best regards

I had a very good experience with Usalama Tours. My driver had to pick me up very early as it was a long drive from Kigali to the forest and we had to be back by evening, but he was great company all along the way, letting me doze off a little at first and then engaging in pleasant conversation when I woke again, pointing out some noteworthy sights on our journey and gamely stopping whenever I asked to take pictures. The canopy walk itself was well worth the drive: although the hike was only 90 minutes or so in total, it provided beautiful, panoramic views of the rain forest below and around us, and our tour guide was knowledgeable and charming. I didn't see any monkeys from the suspension bridge, but there was no shortage of them along the road leading in and out of the park and ample opportunities for photos. The entire experience felt very professional and relaxed, would definitely recommend

Our whole group had a lot of fun doing this canopy walk. There is a nice short hike down to the bridge which gives great views of the forest. The bridge itself is breathtaking and very fun to walk across. The views of the forest and hills are unmatched and it was especially amazing to watch the clouds roll down into the valley. It started raining on our hike back and the trail was still very accessible and it was actually pretty cool to be hiking through the rainforest while it was raining.

Would highly recommend Usulama! Darius took us to the canopy walk. He was extremely polite, informative and fun! We had the opportunity to jam the whole way back to music. While we were not able to see some of the sites due to rain it was still an awesome trip. Would love to use Usulama on my next trip to Rwanda and would certainly recommend Darius and Usulama to others.

The tour was well worth the ride from Kigali to the Nationalpark!
While driving you have great views because of the many hills. What's more you get a nice insight of the Rwuandan people along the way and your driver is there to answer all your questions about the country.
Seeing the rainforest, the monkeys and other animals and walking the canopy track with an experience Ranger completed the experience for me.
I would recommend the tour anytime while staying in Kigali.

We had Darius as our guide and his sense of humour, knowledge of Rwandan culture, and passion for his job made our trip so memorable. We laughed and learned many things on our 6 hour drive from Kigali to Nyungwe. I would recommend him and the company to all of my friends and family.

I had a great day with Djabil on this tour to Nyungwe National Park. He makes sure all aspects of the trip are prepared for in advance and I had a thoughtful discussion with him throughout the day. Nyungwe park is amazing in its varied wildlife and plant life and the canopy provides an incredible view of the forest below. I’d highly recommend this tour!
