Akagera National Park located along the eastern border of Rwanda, where the typically hilly countryside gives way to the savannas of the Great Rift Valley. Dominated by lakes, swamps and marshland, the area boasts a huge compliment of nature and wildlife that cannot be found elsewhere in the country. We will arrive for a morning game drive, searching for the big five, rhinos, lions, buffalos, leopard and elephant in the expansive Park.

Great Experience / Safari in Rwanda and Uganda
FANTASTIC trip! We did a short 7 nights Rwanda / Uganda safari. Everything went smooth. We did reservation only about 50 days before travel, we wondered if that might be an issue. A few weeks before travel Kawira let us know that no Gorilla trekking permits for Bwindi came available on the specific day we were looking for, and instead we were going to Gorilla trek in Mgahinga National Park. This turned out GREAT, as the Gorillas were in full view for us. This change did cause a few changes to our lodging from the initial itinerary, and a slight change in cost. Kinoti Ian (owner, family name comes first, so he goes by “Ian”) did all of the pre-trip planning and communication, which all went smooth. Godfrey was our Kawira guide / driver. He was very kind and helpful, and very willing to engage in conversation and answer our wide variety of questions. Godfrey was very pleasant to spend time with. We flew in / out of Kigali, we visited the Kigali Genocide Memorial (very meaningful 1 – 2 hour stop), then up to Volcanoes National Park (Golden Monkey’s), then crossed border to Uganda (went smooth), then Mgahinga Gorilla trek (amazing), then Queen Elizabeth National Park game trek and boat tour (both GREAT), then short Chimp trek, and then back to Kigali. We did a coffee tour in Kisoro, Uganda, which was great, and also made a short stop at two crater lakes just outside QENP. The scenery on the drives was beautiful. Lots of mountains, and a few FUN bumpy roads. We changed vehicles for one safari drive, and then that vehicle had an issue, but that only lasted 30 minutes and we were back on the road. Godfrey always seemed to have lots of contacts for calling and setting things up. The food and meals were delicious, and the accommodations were all very nice. Remember to bring appropriately sized money / bills for tipping the guides and trackers, and local community members doing demonstrations for you, etc. Money changing in the rural areas can be difficult. They are happy to accept USD, but come prepared with adequate sized bills for your taste in tipping. Tipping is common / expected, but we were advised to just tip whatever we “felt” appropriate. The weather was still nice in late September, beginning of the rainy season, just a few afternoon rainstorms, but nothing disrupted our activities. Everything was turning green, and farmers were starting to plant. I would book again with Kawira, no hesitations. Everything was very professional. …FYI… I will post reviews of specific trip activities and accommodations on their respective Trip Advisor pages.

The monkeys are wonderful to photograph!
If you are keen on photographing animals this is the trip for you especially if you are not going to stay in Volcanoes NP. The Golden monkeys are wonderful and there were so many that everyone (you join a tracking group) got excellent opportunities for great photos. It does entail an early start but well worth it. Zidane, the driver, is a lovely young man, a good driver and a great companion. The lunch was the best I had had in Uganda and Rwanda! Don’t forget to buy your Golden Monkey permit well in advance!

        Best driver/guide ever!
We stayed in Kigali before we went gorilla trekking in Rwanda and had the best experience and education with our driver/tour guide Denis (with one 'n'). We learned so much from him that we are returning home with the desire to learn more about Rwandan history. Denis also is knowledgeable about the different cultures of people from Kigali to the Volcanoes area. He is a safe and DEPENDABLE driver who know how to navigate the chaos of the roads. We HIGHLY recommend him for any and all tours or driving!

        Akagera / Muyumbu Camping
Camped at Muyumbu overnight and 2 days safari drive. Tents were provided by the park and we brought everything else including blow up mattress and sleeping bags / food , charcoal etc Great experience, hardly any other cars on the road and we were the only ones in the camp site. It’s protected by electric wire fence so animals don’t come into camp, but you can hear them in the distance. So peaceful and quiet . Drives were hot and dusty in the day and temperature did drop at night but not too cold. Overall an amazing experience

        Unpaid refunds
Although the transfer to Mgahinga Gorilla NP was good, with our driver Kinote Ian, Kawira Safaris has never paid a refund of $2,000 USD due us primarily from cancelled airline tickets that we purchased through them. We are also out another $600 USD for an unused Uganda Gorilla permit purchased through Kawira. Ian acknowledges the debt for the cancellations but has not been forthcoming with regard to any proceeds Kawira may have received for the valuable gorilla permit.

        An Incredible lifetime experience
We did the gorilla trekking tour from Kigali. Our tour guide was extremely friendly and knowledgeable. The experience is almost not describable, such close up with the gorilla families, almost in touching distance. Our two-night stay at Ingagi Park View lodge was special, where do you get a complementary foot massage after the trekking? The visit to the Ellen DeGeneres - Dian Fossey research center is fun and educational. Highly recommended. Africa Explore tour really take care of their guests.

        Amazing experience
Amazing experience, getting up-close to these beautiful animals. It's very expensive in Rwanda - $1500 just to get into the national park - but worth it (unless you want to do it in Uganda, where it's 1/3 of the price).

Professional, Helpful & Fun - Recommended
When I learned I had to go to Rwanda for work, I naturally decided to spend a few extra days there to see the famous mountain gorillas, and to do a safari. But where to begin? Visit Rwanda - eventually - sent me a spreadsheet with the names and contacts for every tour operator in the country. I reached out to a handful of them. I whittled my shortlist down to two. They were both helpful and patient in answering all my (many) questions, but Kinoti at Kawira seemed more interested in ensuring my trip was amazing and fun, rather than squeezing as much out of me as possible. He even noted that as I was speaking at a conference, I was eligible for a 15% discount on entry to the Volcanoes National Park (where the gorillas hang out) - no small thing when it's $1500 in Rwanda (a price set by the government). Anyhoo - I had an amazing day with the gorillas. My driver - Zidane - was friendly and fun. The Akagera Safari was OK (didn't see lions or leopards, but that's not Kawira's fault - they were just playing hard-to-get that day!). And if/when I next find myself in Rwanda, I will happily use Kawira again.

        Kawira messed up
Their One Day Golden Monkey & Cultural Tour is touted as a private tour on Viator's website but really it's a private driver taking you to Volcanoes National Park and to a place where one can walk around and learn about the cultural activities. The Golden Monkey part of this trip was very good as it you were guided into the forest where the trackers knew the monkeys to be then given an hour to be around them (very close) taking pictures as they moved around you. We lucked out in that we were with a family of 100+ monkeys. However, it is NOT a private tour as listed on Viator's website, because you will be paired with others there for the Golden Monkey experience. Kawira Safaris reached out ahead of time and we wired funds (fees at our expense) to pre-purchase our permits so that we would not be shut out. HOWEVER, they did not mention ANYTHING about the needed for a PCR Covid test in order to do the monkey portion of the tour. This is a requirement of the park and we should have been notified that we needed this done. Instead we unexpectedly had to wait around 2hours while we got tested at the park and then another 1.5hours while they re-ran the tests since the batch they had put our specimens with had a positive result, so they needed to test everyone individually. Thankfully the positive person was not in our group of 3, but we ended up being paired with two men who were traveling with the person who tested positive! Because we lost so much time due to this unexpected testing, we decided to forgo the cultural tour portion of our trip to return to Kigali. So, even without this cultural part, our 10hr tour was 12+ hours due to the unexpected delay. Kawira Safaris would not accept any responsibility for our issues and offer any partial refund to offset the extra expense we incurred or to make up for the lousy experience we had at their lack of communication of this pertinent information. TOTALLY IRRESPONSIBLE of this outfit. I HIGHLY DO NOT RECOMMEND THEIR SERVICES.

        Amazing!
We had an absolutely amazing time on our two-day tour with Kawira! Iddy was a fantastic guide, extremely friendly and knowledgeable and lots of good conversation along the way. Ian went above and beyond to organize our tour as well as help us organize other parts of our vacation. Nyungwe Forest is just stunningly beautiful and is a must-visit for a trip to Rwanda. I can't recommend Kawira enough - great tour and lovely people!

Gorilla Trek from Kigali to Mgahinga
My friend and I booked a day trip from Kigali to Mgahinga Gorilla National Park and had an amazing experience with Kawira Safaris! We really wanted to see the gorillas but the price of gorilla permits in Rwanda was too high for our budgets. Ian Kinote kindly organized an option for us that we could afford where we crossed over to Uganda (where the permits are cheaper). Our driver, Mbabazi, was really amazing and arrived on time at 3am (in fact he was 10 mins early) which we really appreciated because we had a long drive ahead of us. He helped us in every aspect to cross the border, pick up our permits, and drop us off at the start of the trek. We had an absolutely amazing time interacting with the gorillas. The group we saw had 17 gorillas including 7 young ones! Then on the way home we stopped at the Diane Fossey museum and for lunch in Musanze. Overall, it was a day to remember for years to come and I would like to thank Ian Kinote for organizing it all. He was very professional with his emails and responded promptly to the questions we had. My friend and I would both recommend Ian Kinote for his great service and a fair price.

Day tour to Nyamata & Ntamara
I booked for almost 170 US-Dollar a day tour to the place above. Based on the written Confirmation the tour should start at 09.00, The will pick me up at the hotel before. The forgot to pick me up; no message from them. At 9.45 someone from my hotel reached them. Sent me an mail to get an answer soon. After 30 minutes I got a message that the driver mistook the time. Will send me a new guide in 15 minutes which were 40minutes at the end. Nevertheless, it was a guid but a pure (but friendly) taxi driver, with limithed English knowledge. He drove me to the first place let me go out and visit the memorial. After 15minutes I returned and the taxi driver was not here anymore; no message before. After 30 minutes he returned, no exuse. The only good thing was the the lunch (back in Kigali) at the local restaurant. 170 US Dollar for a taxi ride of 4 hours (and not up to 8hours like written in confirmation) was a huge disappointment.

We contacted Ian on a short notice to arrange for us a trip to Akagera. Being a last minute request, we found him to be very fast, gave us all information we needed and booked the trip.
Akagera Nat park is close to Kigali, few hours drive from the capital, spent the day in the park and was amazing.
