      Conservation at it’s finest
We visited the Ebony Forest as part of our Tour of the South and were impressed. Chris drove us up in a jeep and guided us through the conservation efforts and history of Mauritian nature while we were there. Chris was brilliant at answering questions and providing interesting facts. The view at Sublime Point is truly breathtaking and the Jeep tour allows access to everyone unable to manage the hike.

      Great visit to Ebony Forest!
We stumbled across this place on our trip to Seven Coloured Earth and turned out to be the highlight of the whole day. The staff at reception were very helpful and we opted for the self guided hike to the viewpoint. The park was so peaceful and we managed to spot several of the roaming tortoises on the way. Highly recommend!

engage in guided walks, bird-watching, and exploring the unique flora and fauna of the region.
The views are incredible and the guide Kriss always is so entertaining. We captured lots of memories, like planting our love tree and yes we got a small gift also at the end.

      Great work at Ebony Forest!
Fantastic experience at Ebony Forest! We went hiking up to Le Morne View Point and it was great; the path was well laid out and safe. The view was out of this world! We wanted to go further, but it was already quite late, so we returned. The next day, we booked a Love Tree Tour and planted an endemic tree. It was such a wonderful experience, topped with a jeep trip to some other parts of the park with walks through the forest (we even saw some endemic animals like geckos and flycatchers!) and Sublime Point Viewpoint, where we had something to drink and eat as part of the Love Tree Package. The museum and shop are also well worth a visit. All of the guides and staff are very friendly and very helpful! We can only recommend this place to everyone who is passionate about nature and wants to support reforestation while enjoying great views and experiencing the endemic fauna and flora.

Beautiful and created with a vision, but...
Ebony is a beautiful forest reserve near the Chamarel Seven Colored Earth Geopark. In fact, being more interested in nature than touristic locations, we decided to visit the geopark only because we had booked a hike in the Ebony forest. To our surprise, the former was more rewarding. Not that the reserve or the hike were not great. But their website had given us higher expectations about the guided tour, especially after our experience at Île aux Aigrettes (details in its review). We thought we would first be taken into the forest by a guide, and then allowed to explore on our own. But there was no one available. So we found a guide after a short hike to the raised walkway. He then gave us a largely rote description (most of which was already on the information boards placed along the walkway), and the rest was more about the procedures rather than the species of birds and animals being saved from the brink of extinction. At the wildlife film room, the screen was blank and the room, empty. The museum had a lot of information but the room was musty because of which we couldn’t spend much time inside. Overall, it was evident that the reserve was established with a vision and a lot of effort went into creating it. But we felt the enthusiasm in running the daily operations is a bit lacking… Our self-guided hike was good though – the view was great; and we saw a Mauritian flying fox, a Mascarene paradise-flycatcher, a couple of giant tortoises (up close in the wild!), and even two tropicbirds in the distance! The trails are marked. Hikers can click a photo of the route map and take the paths they wish to at their own leisure.

      Fascinating visit to Ebony Forest
We very much enjoyed the tour thanks to our guide Damien. He was very entertaining and knowledgeable about the ebony forest flora and fauna. He recognised birds by their calls and spotted a number of them for us to see. What Damien told us about the ebony trees was fascinating and it was interesting to feel the weight of the dense ebony compared to other wood. We are very grateful to Damien and his colleagues for protecting the forest and sharing it with visitors.

      💯 Go for it!
This was one of a kind experience in life. We had the best time in the silence of a magnificent forest… The staff is absolutely incredible. Special thanks to our guide Krish who took the necessary time to explain to us a lot of things about this ethereal place. The view at the top is the reason why we called Mauritius a paradise… No words will be enough to describe it. Really recommend this jewel! 🫶🏽

      Magic forest
Just an amazing place with amazing people who are doing their best to preserve the ebony forest. Soo worth of visit! You can really see and feel how people made so many mistakes in the past which led to extinction of so many species on this small island. So glad to come and meet all this lovely people who are trying to save and bring back to life the forest and all its inhabitants.

Perfect excursion for couples that love nature!
We visited Mauritius for our honeymoon and in advance our friends gifted us this tour. We didn´t know what to expect, but included was a short introduction to Ebony Forest, a ride in a jeep, some tasty snacks and drinks, a guided tour through the forest where we saw many different plants and animals and planting our tree was the finishing touch. Our tour guide was Chris, he had profound knowledge about the flora and fauna, as well as the history of Mauritius and was overall a really likeable and humorous person.

      Boulders that move!
Super experience for our Ebony Forest trip. Delightful introduction to destruction of the forest and dodos with artefacts to touch. We then travelled up the mountainside by safari truck and stopped to feed any boulders (tortoises!) that needed to be moved off the truck. Flycatcher canopy walk was interesting but the real treat was Sublime view. We were an intergenerational group of 7 and were lucky to be there with no one else so totally immersed in the stunning views. Delicious lemongrass cordial - in real glasses at the little hut. Fantastic few hours and incredibly good value. Absolute highlight of Mauritius holiday. Don’t forget sun hats, sun screen and mossie spray!

We had a very entertaining adventure with our guide, Denis and his colleague, getting to know the endemic birds, wildlife and plants in Ebony forest. We arrived the Reserve by taxi after 9:30 and started hiking through the forest trek.

Denis is very dedicated and knowledgeable about the environment and wildlife. Time went very quickly. Just after mid-day, we managed to hike all the way to Sublime Point with fantastic panoramic view over the coastline. We were treated with local snack and cold juice before returning to the starting point in a 4x4 vehicle. Overall, highly recommended activity.

The trip was superb - our guide was knowledgeable, quick to point out all of the rare local birds that came close to us (including some flycatchers and a beautiful endemic kestrel!) and the views were stunning. It was generally really great to see their efforts in reintroducing the native wildlife and forest.

Well worth a morning hike to avoid the heat of the day!

We had a fantastic time at Ebony Forest. Our guide Damien lead us through the reserve and showed us many, many beautiful wonders of nature, from birds and other wildlife, to the different structures of forest. You could feel that he really enjoyed his work. He explained everything with so much enthusiasm and knowledge. Thank you, Damien for this amazing day. It was one of the highlights of our trip to Mauritius! Thank you also to Sonia, who organised the trip for us. And then of course thank you to everyone else working in the reserve, for all your efforts in managing, restoring and caring for this wonderful piece of Earth :)

Our birdwatching tour at Ebony Forest left me speechless. The countless efforts that have been put into the reintroduction of the native flora and fauna of Mauritius are absolutely incredible.

We were able to learn so much during this tour because of how knowledgable and passionate our guide was. What they're doing here is truly a wonderful project and the view from the top of the forest hike is breathtaking.

A trip to Ebony Forest alone is worth the visit, however, it's located nearby Charamel Waterfall and the Colored Earth Geopark making it easy to visit the other attractions. Ebony Forest is a MUST when visiting Mauritius!

This was the best experience we had in Mauritius. Our guide was Avish - very knowledgeable and enthusiastic, explaining the life of the forest in detail. We saw many of the endemic birds, such as pink pidgeon and mauritius paradise flycatcher.

He also explained a bit more of the current situation of nature preservation and conservation in Mauritius. It is important that tourists visiting Mauritius would choose activities that promote eco-tourism. The tour was really eye-opening and there is a serious need for organizations such as Ebony Forest to continue their work.

Thank you again and all the best for the future!

Our Guide Aveesh (hope this is spelt correctly) spoke good English. He was knowledgeable and explained things very well. He was also great at spotting birds. We walked for 7 kilometers, 70% on hard surface, 10% on steps and 20% on rough ground and climbed the equivalent of 30 flights of stairs so not for the unfit. Lovely fresh hot snacks for lunch at Sublime View Point. For the keen birdwatchers, we got 5 of the 6 endemics there: we easily saw the Pink Pigeon, Echo Parrot, Mauritian Paradise Flycatcher, Grey White Eye and Mauritius Bulbul. Sadly we missed the Mauritian Kestrel. A good but tiring day out. A well run operation with good facilities.

Brilliant tour by excellent guides. Damien and Jounne (apologies if not spelt correctly) guided us by spotting birds and informing us about the Ebony Forest as a whole. Knowledgable as well as easy to talk to generally about the flora, fauna and Mauritius as a whole. Four people c two guides - amazing. Thank you

In our 2weeks trip we visited the Ebony Forest Reserve two times. first time we booked the Jeep tour to the top. Kris was an excellent guide. He explained a lot about the ebony trees and the endemic species. The stay on the top with nice drinks and snack was the perfect ending for our second day on Mauritius.

Joana was the guide for our second trip to the Ebony forest. We booked the bird watching tour for 4 hours with a walk/hiking mix. Joana is a very experienced guide. She tried to find every bird that is unique on Mauritius. Also the guiding through the aviaries where the endangered birds are preserved was very interesting. The effort to keep this wonderful species alive and the recreation of the rainforest is unbelievable.

Thank you so much to the team of the Ebony forest reserve. The visits and guided hikes where definitely on of our highlights during our trip to Mauritius. Especially as birders. 😀
